Honestly, I think something like a dam breaks in Adam's heart, the day he thinks back to Gansey saying 'don't break him, Adam,' and realizes that Gansey knew he was going to die when he said it.
Gansey - Ronan's king and keeper, who had been working so hard to try and tether him to a life he didn't seem to want, was going to die and leave Ronan alone.
What else could our boy-king have done, but put his loyal knight in the hands of his magician and trust that he would be held gently? Cared for? Kept?
