The darkness swallows your surroundings, too far from the fire by this point, to be able to even see a foot in front of you. You hum softly, making your way to your tent. Despite your protests, your tent was at the very far end of the camp. Daryl vouched for you, but no one was willing to make the switch with you. "Hey, slow down." You halted, waiting for him to approach. His eyebrows were furrowed, and his lips were in a line. "What I say about walking off alone?" You glance around, "I've been looking out, I can protect myself." He grabs your wrist, shaking his head firmly. "Just cause' you can protect yourself, doesn't mean you should have too." You could not resist, all the emotion you had been holding onto for weeks cracked through your walls. You forcibly wrap your arms around his neck, pulling him close to your side. Strings of tears soaked his jacket and all he could do was hold you tighter. "Never feel like you're alone." You shake uncontrollably, your breath staggered, "I try. I really try to be strong, but it becomes too much sometimes." His arms stayed snaked around your waist, but you had slightly pulled away. Your face mere inches away from his, "Let me take you to your tent, that way we don't have to watch our backs." His hand led you to your tent, he unzipped it for you, following after you.

He quickly zipped it back up, turning the portable lamp on, a small glow illuminating your face. His heart pounding at your sight, the wet eyes, the streaks from your tears, your lips were puffy from anxiously biting them. "My poor girl, come here." He opened himself up, giving you room to sit in his lap, his arms wrapped securely around you. Daryl had always been your sanctuary. Ever since you met him, you had searched for him first before anyone else even flashed your mind. His fingers rubbed your hair gently, his other hand gripping you tight. You were special to Daryl, in the end, if all he had left was you, he could live with it. Knowing he has protected you this long has made him confident, on top of the fact you are able to defend yourself as well.

"So many people die. Daryl, it's to the point where I expect it." Your soft eyes meet his, and for a second, he lets his guard down. His mouth hangs open, his eyes closing softly. He leans his forehead against yours, and your hands find their way to his hair. You play with it, hoping to ease some of the emotion dwelling inside of you. "I don't want to feel like it's for nothing..." You hesitate. "Jacqui.. maybe she had the right idea. She's at peace." His body stiffens due to your confession, and his blood starts boiling. "Don't." You sigh again, "I'm sorry, it's just how long do we have to keep going through this? Nowhere is truly ever safe." He looks deep into your eyes, "I'm safe, when you're with me I will protect you." You shake your head, "Youve always done that for me." You crack a half smile, "I could never repay you for how many times you have saved my life." You look away but he grabs your chin, forcing you to make eye contact. "You never have to ask or second guess me. I made a vow to protect you, and that's what I'm going to do."

You and Daryl had never spoke about boundaries, or even what your dynamic was. You couldn't resist, you twist yourself, facing him more directly. You lay down, adjusting comfortably against the grass, and the thin layer of tent. "Thank you Daryl." He takes his cross bow off, setting it beside him. He leans down, wrapping his arms around you, he settles himself close to you, desperate for your touch. "You're strong, it has gotten you this far, I know you can handle it out there." You nod, moving closer to him. "I like knowing you can save me." Daryl chuckles. "Anytime you need me, I'll be there." The two of you cuddle soundly on the farm, peace settling in as you let your body rest.

class was easier to sit through when you had jj maybank to star in your thoughts, he consumed most your time. you struggled to pay attention in class, you already knew the topic, and besides, you had already finished the busy work. you'd imagine jj eating at the wreck with you, swimming at night while watching the stars. you had an endless imagination when it came to him. he was just so precious, and despite his rough exterior, you knew he had another side you had yet to see. your home life wasn't that great either, you felt like the black sheep of the family. unable to fully get along with your sisters, they cared more about popularity, and boyfriends. this pushed you to be in your head a lot, daydreaming about another life.

you hadn't interacted with jj too many times. you had a project with him last semester, and despite his reputation, he was eager to help you work on it. jj had quite the rep, and you knew to stay away from him. that feeling never went away though, the longing to get to know him, to figure out who he was. class was close to over, jj was sitting a few seats in front of you, he was laid back in the chair, ignoring the assignment. you thought about offering to help him with homework, but you were already named the schools "nerd" and you didn't want to intensify the label.

it was the last class; you were dreading going home. the bell rings, dismissing you. you gather your supplies and rush out the room. at home, you head straight to your bedroom. you pull out your diary. you write about how slow the school day went. you mentioned how your last class went by the fastest. then, just like most days, you write about jj. you noted how good his hair looked, how it was messy but still neat. his shirt was tan, and he had cargo shorts. you smile as you recall the memory of jj. you finish your diary entry, putting it back in your secret spot. you got up, grabbing your book bag and walking away.

you head downstairs, preparing to start your homework. "what kind of loser is doing homework on a friday night?" your sister snarled at you with a venomous tone. "it's easier to do it now." you argued back. she laughed at you, teasing you loud enough so your other sister decided to join in. "is she really doing homework?" she tsks, "see, that's why you aren't invited to parties." you frown, tears welling in your eyes. you were too frustrated, all you could do is cry. they giggled, proud that they caused you to cry. "look! she's crying!" you run away, out the front door, speeding down the street. by this point, your vision was blurry, and you struggle to calm down. you take a few deep breaths. after a few minutes of reflection, you decide to walk back to the house. you go inside; and find your sisters are long gone.

you put your homework away, you didn't want your sisters to be right, however, a party seemed fun. you quickly change your clothes into something a little out of your comfort zone. you've been yelled at numerous times from your sisters. they would degrade you for dressing up. you put on some cute make up. you were fully confident, ready to show your sisters you weren't going to take their abuse any longer. you looked at your phone, searching for any parties occurring tonight. you found one, located at the beach, a girl from school boasting about how fun it will be.

upon arrival at the beach, you saw multiple crowds of people. nerves creeped up but you pushed them down. tonight, everything was going to be perfect. you approach a table full of beers and seltzers. you eagerly grab a drink, cracking it open, and taking a big gulp. you walk towards the crowd; music is blaring off a speaker. people are dancing excessively, most teenagers obviously inebriated. it was a thrill being able to witness this event. you become a part of the crowd, and it wasn't long before your envious sisters noticed your appearance. "you can't wear that!" you roll your eyes, "you can't tell me what to do." you cross your arms, the people around you are watching intently. "you don't look hot, you're trying too hard!" your other sister spits out. a rando in the group perks up, "no, she's hot!" a rush of heat rises to your face, the compliment catching you off guard. your sisters seethed at this, fuming with rage, she runs off, reaching for her tote bag. inside, unbeknownst to you, she swiftly reaches for your diary.

she squeals, ripping your book open, your secrets close to being exposed. you turn around, familiar with the words she was shouting. "jj is just so flawless! he's effortlessly cool, and he is so mysterious." you rush forward, lunging after your journal. "stop it! that isn't funny!" you are desperate to retrieve your belongings. "i saw jj in class today, he looked so handsome, his eyes looked brighter than usual." you stop in your tracks when you realize jj was there, and he had definitely heard your confession. your anger causes adrenaline, you push your sister, she slips into the sand, the book dropping from her grasp. you sigh with relief until you scan the crowd that was laughing at you.

in the crowd you notice someone. your breath gets caught in your throat, the intense eye contact between you and jj becomes too much, and you had to look away. "your diary is so pathetic." a drunk student mutters, he scoffs walking off. you shake your head, running off while tears stream down your face. you find an abandoned sandy spot to cry about the humiliation you just endured. you were so upset, filled with worry that jj would be laughing at you too.

jj was having a good time, he had a good night with john b, getting lucky in the fishing department. eager to celebrate their abundance of fish, they decided to go to the party on the beach. it was all the rage at school. at the party, jj was content with his friend group. they all drink, enjoying the free beer. after fifteen minutes of peace, a large crowd gathers around, due to curiosity the group joins. him and his friends had missed a lot of the altercation. ""jj is just so flawless! he's effortlessly cool, and he is so mysterious." his ears perk at the call of his name, he rushes to push through the crowd so he can see who was talking about him.

once he's at the front of the crowd, his gaze softens. "stop it! that isn't funny!" it was you, and your sister? confusion was written all over jj's face, he was shocked to see this crowd was gawking over a small fight between siblings. jj filled with rage, watching your sister mock and ridicule you. you hadn't done anything to deserve such an invasion of privacy. he was speechless, unsure of how he could respond, or intervene. "i saw jj in class today, he looked so handsome, his eyes looked brighter than usual." jjs stomach dropped at those words, you really paid attention to the small details of him. jj didn't know how he felt about you. you two had only ran into each other on a few occasions while at school. what he did know, was that you were really sweet. you were compassionate and you definitely shouldn't be put down by your blood.

when he locked eye contact with you, he felt your fear, noticed how flushed you were. he couldn't bare make eye contact, when he was merely a bystander. with that look from him, he wasn't shocked when you used grunt force to knock your sister down. he watches you look around. he hesitated, waiting to see your next move. "your diary is so pathetic." you run away, hurt from those words. his heart stings at the sight. he turns over, another drunken boy speaks bluntly, "wait, does that loser really like you?" jj had to control his temper, comforting you was more important. "you're an asshole." he rips the journal out of your sister's hand. "you should feel ashamed. that was not okay." his stern, low voice, startled her. "im sorry." jj laughs, "im not the one to apologize too." with that, he leaves the crowd. he's determined to find you, to assure you that he isn't upset.

you settle yourself onto the sandy beach. you watch the party from afar, so many people went back to swimming, and drinking. while you were here, out of your element. a few minutes of silence occurred; you felt peaceful for the first time since being home. you were startled when a body gracefully sat by you. you glance over, realizing jj had joined you. "hey." he let out a sigh. "hi, jj." nerves fluttered your system. being this close to jj felt like a dream come true. you couldn't even count the number of times you wrote about how badly you wanted this. he looks at you, "your sister doesn't seem nice." you grin, "what gave you that impression?" you joke. he chuckles, and you speak up again. "she actually is worse, but it was different since we were in public." jj scoffs, "worse than reading your diary to the whole school?" you put your hands on your head. "jj, listen. im really sor-." he cuts you off blankly. "don't start all that." you frown, "what do you mean?" he looks back at the party before staring at you again, "this wasn't your fault. you didn't deserve this." he scoots closer to you, "you should know that."

his words sent a slight chill down your back, his close body made you nervous. "i know, i didn't luck out in the family department." he nods, "i can relate." you gasp, "what! really?" he laughs at your shocked expression. "yeah. deadbeat dad, long story. but i know what it's like to never feel like you can stand up to them. but, if it's worth anything, i was proud of you for pushing your sister." you smile brightly at jj, "it was exhilarating, but i felt bad after." he shakes his head, "awe, you're just the sweetest, huh?" you bite your lip, "oh yes, definitely." his eyes locked with yours, a few seconds go by, neither of you two say anything. he leaned forward ever so slightly, his eyes drifting close.

you close your eyes and lean in, your lips brush against his and you feel how soft his lips actually are. after a few seconds, you pull away. you don't say anything, you just look at him. "i kind of like you too." jj mustered up, nervous to admit his feelings. you smirk, leaning towards him. "well you already know how i feel about you." you explain. he playfully rolls his eyes, "i want to hear it from you, not from your sister reading your secret journal. okay?" you nod, understanding. "okay. well i notice you at school. you're cool, way too cool for me." he places a hand on your thigh. "no such thing, you're smart, and kind. you're too good for me." you hug him gently. "i felt so embarrassed when i saw you." he sighs, "you should have told me sooner. i was surprised when she read your entry, i didn't think you saw me that way."

"well i didn't want to get rejected by you. but now? now, it's different. will you take me on a date?" you smirk, proud of yourself for asking him on a date. "yes, i'm going to take you out, how about tomorrow?" you stand up from the sand, "that sounds perfect." you exchange phone numbers with jj. he gives you a gentle hug, "i wish your sisters didn't treat you that way." you sigh, "i know, i wish they didn't too." jj walked you through the beach, the two of you bonding and joking together. it felt so casual to be friendly with him. he brought you home, walking with you.

"i had a fun time hanging out." you nod enthusiastically. he looks around carefully, "if it ever gets too bad here, text me." your heart flutters at the thought of him protecting you from your evil sisters. "i will jj, i promise." he hesitates to leave, "its getting late, ill let you rest." you smile at his comment, muttering a soft, "goodbye." he leaves your front porch.

you walk inside your house; all the lights are off and it seems like the coast is clear. however, once you reach the stairs, you see both of your sisters. "jj might be talking to you now, but just know he thinks you are pathetic, and he won't actually stay with you." you roll your eyes. "you know that how?" you question them. she shrugs, "he's got a reputation." despite their warnings, you walk past them, gunning for the stairs. you reach your room and slam the door shut behind you. you quickly grab a pen before writing about your day in your diary.

you frown, drenched in sweat. your face was warm with a bright red hue. eddie sighed, taking the thermometer out of your mouth. "awe honey, you've got a fever." you groan, leaning your back against eddies bed frame. "i don't feel good." he nods, he quickly grabs you a pajama set to change into. "here, let me help you." he lifts up your shirt, quickly tossing it to the floor. you laugh, noticing the laundry basket that he missed. "thank you for taking care of me." he shook his head, he gently slid off your pants, replacing them with shorts. "you know i'll always protect you." his words comfort you, and you reach for his hands.

"i love you eddie." he grins, "i love you so much, baby." he plants a soft kiss against your forehead. you grimace, aware of how sweaty it is. "lay down, i'm going to make you some soup." you slide down, now laying on the bed. "are you hot or cold?" you sigh, "both, i feel hot but i have the shivers." he bites his lip, thinking for a moment. "i'll turn the fan on, and get you a light blanket, okay?" you grin. "anything you do, will be perfect." he grabs a small blanket from the corner of his room. on the way back to the bed he turned on the box fan. "here, and what would you like to watch?" you look behind him to his tv, "my favorite movie, please." he grabs the vhs and slides it into the player, after he made sure it started correctly, he headed to the kitchen.

in the kitchen, he's quickly making you a bowl of soup, as well as some juice. he brings it to you, after he made sure it wasn't too hot. "i brought you some soup, and juice." you smile weakly at him. "thank you so much." eddie then grabs a washcloth, dampening it slightly. he puts the cool rag on your forehead. "you can take it off while you eat, but i wanted to make sure you had this." your heart swells because of eddie, his kindness and hospitality was a new side of him that you hadn't fully seen. you felt safe, protected, and loved. you attempted to eat as much of the soup that you could, and you soon fell asleep. eddie smiled softly, he tucked you neatly into bed. he brought a glass of water to your bedside table. for when you wake up. he took your soup, cleaning out the bowl. he heads back to his room, turning the tv off. he approached the bed. "goodnight baby." he kissed you gently, making sure you wouldn't wake up.

jj held a soft smile on his lips. he looks away, taking in the scenery of the beach in front of him. you glanced away, a slight hum falling off your lips. he placed his palm on your knee, his eyes soft against your gaze, “baby?” his direct eye contact leaves you with unease. “yeah, jj?” he sighs, his chest heaving. he couldn’t control his flustered thoughts. “it's making you cry every time you give your love to me this way…” you quickly frown in response, “jj, don’t.” he gently moves your hair to the side, “shh.” he places his finger to your lips. he hesitates, continuing after a few seconds. “saying you’d wait for me to stay?” he shakes his head, “i know it hurts you, but i need to tell you something.”

your eyes start to water, the sadness bubbling inside of you again. “jj, you can be better for me. you haven’t even tried.” he frowns, his eyes trained to the sand. “my heart just can’t be faithful for long.” you grab his chin, forcing him to face you. “i know you only feel that way because you’re used to everyone leaving. i’m not leaving jj, i’m not going anywhere.” he sighs, “i swear ill only make you cry.” your eyes are glossy, your heart racing. “jj, please.” his eyes are cold, a slight red tint to his cheeks. the sun setting ahead, casting a hue. “i just don’t want to be tied down.” you nod, “why do you keep hurting me?” your words affect him heavily, a twinge of guilt settles in the bottom of his stomach. the idea of officially loosing you sinks in. he closes his eyes; you stare at him in confusion. “talk to me, please.” you urge, desperate for answers. he is silent, lost in his own head. you sigh, a part of you wanted to comfort him, give him support. you resented yourself for still caring about him. you stay silent, kindly setting your hand in his, the feeling of your fingers catch him off guard, but he relaxes under your touch. “maybe id change for you someday.” he lets go of your hand, finding a shell to fidget with instead. “but, i can’t help the way i feel.” you nod, silent from his confession. “wish i was good.” you roll your eyes, but it goes unnoticed by jj. “you can be good jj.” he sighs, “i wish that i could give you my love now.” you let out an awkward airy laugh, “right person, wrong time?” he offers a half smile for your comment. “something like that, yeah?” you nod. he questions you, “does this ruin everything between us?” you look forward, watching the waves crash against each other. “i don’t know.” you slowly stand up. you use your hands to dust the sand off of you. “stay safe jj.” he watches you walk away, his head swarmed with thoughts. he sits silently on the beach, once you are out of view, tears slip through his tough exterior.
