Okay so we’re going to press this yellow switch, hopefully something COOL will happen!
Oh dammit. TELEPOR MARIO
GOOD JOB Mario, another POWERful TELEPORT!
We’re witnessing an interesting schism in the tech world. In the scale of it I can’t think of much similar beyond the conflicts over the meaning of open source and GNU, but there at least actors on either side had intentions rooted in things that weren’t mere self-interest. But here, one side is mostly wannabe prophets of and profiteers off their own pet version of digital hypercapitalist scarcity. Unfortunately, these are the assholes who are well-entrenched at the tops of most tech companies now, as the programmers and engineers who don’t want to partake in the outright pandering and overselling of the libertarian wet dreams which are most companies’ growth strategies primarily content themselves doing the less trendy development, which sees them lower down in the hierarchy.
I struggle to appreciate the true depths of self-delusion that are possible within the clever but utterly anti-introspective wealthy tech dude, but I’d estimate at least a third of crypto adherents know the bubble will burst. Possibly as many as two thirds? Idk.
But grouping them into true crypto futurists/devotees vs cynical profiteers risks overlooking the important social aspect to this whole thing. The function of these deranged ape avatars and other attempts to make crypto participation an outwardly visible sort of social status is that it allows the formation of an in-group/community for a bunch of white dudes for whom a decade or so in tech or finance has left them very disconnected and isolated from most of society, both in terms of their class position and their social habituation. Crypto has become a convenient rallying point for like-minded people who want to avoid the social friction of hanging out with those who don’t share their fundamentally technocratic and libertarian set of social norms, in-jokes, or who will pause at $100+ dinner tabs.
Its ability to give these isolated and unhappy men something to connect and bond with one another over, and envision a future with, helps give the whole community this self-propelling momentum. Unfortunately, given the size of their wealth, their positions in management hierarchies and contacts with venture capital, and the loudness of their personalities, they’re dragging a lot of the tech industry with them. Yet the more they pull, the greater the tension with the other computer boys who hate their guts.
