Motivators

How it all started

I decided to quit my first job after most of my friends left. They thought the pay was too low. For me, it was a pleasant job and within my comfort zone. It was not until the one colleague who never complained announced she was going that I felt the strong drive to leave.

The job search

At that time, I didn’t know what companies would interest me. I asked that colleague about her new position and wrote down what I liked (ordered by importance):

compensation

ability to work remotely

communication in English

product/project impact

Finally, I joined a company that fulfilled all four criteria.

And then I left

The excitement of starting a new job died down the first week. By the end of the first month, I was already bored. Even worse, I was trapped in the mindset that one should stay in a job for at least a year. Due to that mentality, I persuaded myself that this was work I’d never done, so I should view it as a learning opportunity. I told myself, “Stick to it for a year, and maybe I’ll start to enjoy the job.”

And it never happened, so I quit after a year.

In retrospect, I left because:

I was not excited about working on the product

B2B product, customers felt far away

weak social connections with colleagues

triggers from friends around me switching jobs

Identifying the motivators (TL;DR)

The motivators for me to accept that offer were all extrinsic ones. They are important, but not enough for me to stay happy.
