[Of course the thief generally had his own good in mind, no matter the happenstances. This world left little to no alternatives anyhow, but Garrett had grown used to rather shallow acceptance of just those odds. And ever since Erin was gone and Basso and he had gone seperate ways, he was all on his own and had even little to hold on to. He wasn’t one to quickly express pity, but that girl seemed.. somehow worth it. The pity, that is. Most people and that world of theirs didn’t earn such a thing, and especially Garrett was quick to brush them aside as just another person of no importance. He remained behind next to her, carefully watched and decided to interfer, were her hands to tremble too much.]
[As she went about her stitching-up-business, he simply watched carefully, evaluated each stitch since, yes, he’d gathered some experiences with wounds and their treatment over the time— especially as a kit. The kinds of movement that now were routine to the taffer used to earn him a few bruises and cuts. The memory almost had him smirk behind the fabric covering his face.]
[Once she was done, he scanned the wound briefly before glancing back at her. What concealed his face was pulled down and he gave her a soft nod.]
”Not bad for somebody who looked like she’d been about to.. well, to have a bit of heartattack, quite honestly.”
[Somebody acustomed to sarcasm certainly picked up that he was only joking, but he was generally not the overly obvious kind.]
“Your nose. You should clean that up.”
"Haah, fuck you too."
[ Yeah, because stitching up the guy who's been saving your ass over and over again was really fucking easy. Jesus. She wiped at her brow and breathed out a short sigh, before realizing her arms were exposed. Her eyes darted towards the stranger as she hurriedly pulled up her sleeves before wiping bloodied fingers on her frostbitten jeans. Right. She'd almost forgotten about it. The bite. It was.. just a part of her at this point. Nothing special. She was infected, had been for, Jesus, months now, and she was still alive. This wasn't a fluke, just.. she was lucky. ]
"I -- fuck, yeah I probably should."
[ She sniffled softly, more like a child would, and once again reached for the kit. She pulled a bit of binding from the roll and wrapped it around her fingers, making an attempt to clean up her face. Ellie held her breath as she felt at her nose. From what little she knew she didn't think it was broken, so.. at least there was that? She groaned softly. Still hurt like hell. ]

“Now, don’t sell yourself short. You and your brother would have found a way, I just happened to be the first one to take notice of the opportunity," Varric waved a hand flippantly with a soft laugh. Much as he loved being thanked, there was no reason for it… not yet.
“I want you safe, Sunshine. Just like your your mother, and just like Hawke. Hell, I’d leave him behind too if I thought I could get away with it. I don’t think the world could stand to lose you. It would suffer for it greatly. You have a lot to offer, but Anders is also a mage, and I’m sure with some proper convincing we could drag him along. It doesn’t have to be you," he didn’t want it to be her. None of them did. There wasn’t a day that went by that as their reserves of coin grew and grew they didn’t think about the possibility. Of what might happen either way.
“If you… decide to stay behind, I won’t leave you unprotected.”
Bethany straightened, a kind of resolve flickering over her features. She smoothed out the chainmail strapped to her torso and adjusted her sleeves, before giving Varric a rather serious look, head softly tilted and brow creased.
"Varric, I know you want what's best for me. For Garrett. But there are some things I.. I have to do." She swallowed softly, but valiantly held her expression in place, "Anders has done his time in the Deep Roads, and should something happen down there everyone in his clinic would be at a loss. None of us would be able to make up for that. And Merrill -- I know she's strong but not everyone trusts her for what she is. What she's.. done." Her arms crossed, then, her discomfort bubbling to the surface. Her shoulders dropped softly as she breathed out a slow sigh. "I know you won't. But I can take care of myself. Besides -- if the worst does happen, if someone sells me out for the coin, what will stop the templars from coming for me? No amount of protection will stop 'the Maker's work'."

announcement;;
Because of how startleingly demanding she is as a muse, I will be moving Abigail "Fetch" Walker from this page and to her own blog. That way any followers who are not in the inFAMOUS: Second Son fandom will no longer be spammed by content from said game, and I can be free to focus on what replies I do owe. I will be posting the link to her blog soon for those of you who wish to follow her.

Delsin’s hand clenched into a fist at Fetch’s jibe, eyes narrowing on her. “Like you could hit that hard," he retorted, voice cool — which betrayed the expression on his face. His eyes never left her; they followed her as she adjusted herself and hopped into the ring. It wasn’t until then that he got into position. Arms lifted, fists clenched, Delsin bent a knee and leaned back, in the perfect position to begin fighting.
”Whatever. You were just wasting everyone’s time by dragging your feet." He loosened his fist and adjusted his fingers like he was shifting his grip on something, and for a moment, he almost wished that they were fighting with bo staffs. But then, Fetch smirked the most self-satisfied smirk he’d ever seen and made a ‘come hither’ motion with her fingers, and Delsin felt that annoyance bubble up inside him once again, hot and angry and just totally infuriating.
He rolled his weight forward to the foot positioned closer to her and rocketed toward her, fists raised and ready to hit her. Sure, this was just a spar, but that didn’t mean Delsin was going to go easy on her. He hauled his arm back, ready to strike, when she was suddenly… gone. Blinking, mouth opening in surprise, Delsin’s eyes darted to and fro until he felt a sharp, heavy pain at the nape of his neck. Immediately, he collapsed onto the floor, landing hard on his stomach, limbs splayed out around him.
It didn’t take rocket science for him to figure out that she was fast. Really, really fast. So fast that she’d managed to sidestep his attack in time and throttle her elbow back into his neck to bring him to the ground. Head throbbing, Delsin wasted no time in rolling onto his back and jumping back to his feet, fists up again. He was acutely aware of the whispers rising from the spectators in the room, but he refused to let them get to him. He had to focus on her; he was quickly becoming aware that this was not something he could half-ass.
And he’d really been hoping he wouldn’t have to hit her too hard.
Her grin was wider now, her jibes coming like needles under his skin, but he ignored them. Calm down, Delsin, he told himself. Concentrate. Get mad later. You won’t win if you stay mad now. And this time, he paid attention to her — really paid attention. He once more came at her, making like he was going to throw another punch. She jumped away, probably just like she had before, but he quickly shifted his weight, raised the arm closest to her, and checked her with his weight. She stumbled back, a look of surprise crossing her face before she, too, raised her fists in defense.
The room was dead silent now — not a sound as the two fighters slowly circled one another. Delsin knew that she wouldn’t strike first, and this time, he faked her out. He moved forward, feet shuffling against the mat, and just as she feinted to one side, Delsin swept his arm out to clock her on the side of the head. But Fetch reacted just as quickly and raised one of her arms to block it at the last second. For a moment there was a stalemate, and then, Delsin lurched forward, trying to grab her by the arm, by the shoulder, by anything, just so he could pin her down and get her to stop moving for five seconds.
But Fetch managed to evade, ducking around him and giving him a solid shove — enough to stumble him, but not enough to knock him over. They once more turned to face each other again, and the battle began anew.
The fight continued for several minutes, both on equal footing with the other — anticipating moves, blocking, countering, and occasionally getting a hit in. The entire time, there was dead silence — not even the fighters themselves goaded one another anymore, too focused on besting the other to care about such trivialities.
But then Delsin saw his opening; saw the way she left one side completely unguarded while dodging and, without thinking, lunged forward and tackled her down onto the mat. They both hit, hard, and Delsin pinned her, her legs trapped underneath his own, her wrists held down by both of his hands. At last, he grinned triumphantly, taking great pleasure in the annoyed expression on her face. “Finally fucking got you,” he crowed, adjusting his hold slightly on her wrists. “After running away like a coward, I finally pinned you down!” He glanced over at the trainer, who had not yet called the match. Not surprising, considering neither one of them had tapped out. “You should just give up now, Fetch. No way you’re weaseling your way out of this one —”
And here, he made his fatal mistake. His grip on her right wrist loosened — not a lot, but just enough that she wasted no time in yanking her arm from his grasp. Before he could react, could pin her down again, she hauled back and socked him right in the face.
He heard the crunch more than he felt it, and Delsin fell back onto his ass, letting up on Fetch without a second thought. Though she jumped up to her feet, Delsin’s hands launched up to cup his nose, because there were blood splatters on the mat.
When he pulled his hands away, they came away blood, and he knew that she had broken it. It was starting throb now, too, and Delsin couldn’t stop himself from starting, “Sonova —!”
”Delsin!" Reggie yelled, and jumped into the ring. The trainer called the fight shortly after, also climbing in to help assess the damage.
But Delsin looked past both of them to lock eyes with Fetch. “You broke my fucking nose! You — you —" But he couldn’t come up with an insult strong enough to finish that thought.
She had to admit -- even by her standards that first move of his had been idiotic. But going blow for blow with him, the rhythm of it all, it was.. strange. Her heart pounded softly in her chest; adrenaline was present but as time went on the rage wasn't there. He wasn't Delsin, she wasn't Fetch. They were both almost.. whole. The thought of it almost made her stomach turn, and she decided she'd keep that tidbit of information to herself.
The pin had been her fault. She'd been stupid, left him an opening when she should have stayed tight. Her back slammed down onto the mat, knocked the wind from her chest, and thhis asshole was on top of her. She didn't need to struggle to know he had her properly downed, but she refused to tap out. She would never, ever, under any circumstances --
"-- should just give up, Fetch. No way you're weaseling your way out of this one."
All that rage that had buried itself during the fight resurfaced, and the small opening he left was all she needed. Violently, angrily, she pulled her best arm free of his fingers, curled her fingers into a fist, and threw it at his face. She felt bone give way under skin, saw the spray of blood she produced. As soon as he was off of her she got to her feet, fist raised, caught up in that moment of triumph.
But then the shouting started, and the white noise that'd filled her eyes gave way to panicked whispers -- and he was staring at her. Her eyes narrowed at him, fists dropping her sides but still clenched. She could hear Brent calling to her, and she took a step back, until he had the gall to try and call her out. An amused half-smile curled her lips, and she shook her head slightly.
"What'd you fuckin' say before? Somethin' like I couldn't hit that hard?"
Just then, she checked her fist and lifted a brow at the specks of blood on her skin. As she backed up to hop out of the ring, she swiped her knuckles clean on the shoulder of her shirt. "Come on, Fetch, y'made your point." Brent beckoned, trying to hide his pride behind a mask of genuine concern. Not for Delsin, but for his sister. He certainly wouldn't have wanted to get pinned like that. With one last look over her shoulder at the bleeding Rowe, a small smirk rested on her features.
"I know."
Fetch hopped from the ring no worse for wear. A few of her muscles hurt but it was nothing a good stretch couldn't fix. She drew a deep breath, let it out, and patted her brother on the shoulder before waltzing back over to their practice mat. Brent had his eyes elsewhere -- watching in case Delsin or even Reggie tried a bit of retaliation. Friendships aside, he had a loyalty to his sister -- he'd protect her from everything he could.
later that week;
Fetch scrubbed at her nose with the back of her hand not long after she sat down at the familiar metal table. The mess hall was huge and it wasn't just for pilots; engineers and mechanics lingered about, some stained with grease and oil, others pristine. The Jeager program was a messy business, and she was actually kind of proud to be part of it. Kaiju attacks weren't frequent, but when they did happen they were always prepared to engage. A soft smirk played at the corner of her lips. She'd be out there one day, kicking ass properly. It was almost hard to believe.
Brent wasn't too far behind, but that little smile on his face caught her off guard. She lifted a brow, watched him as he sat beside her, didn't even make a passing comment until she opened her mouth to do just that. "So I invited a friend to eat with us." Fetch's lips pursed tightly as her head snapped to him. She was kinda big on privacy. And ever since she'd given Rowe what he deserved people had been avoiding her even more. It was nice. She liked not having to worry about people asking for the billionth time if she was excited about graduation.
A small groan slipped past her lips as she saw just who her brother had invited. Of course it'd be the Rowe guys. Couldn't her brother keep his nose out of her buisness for a few more days? Still, seeing that smug mug of Delsin's all bruised was kind of entertaining. If anything, she'd at least get to remind him of just how that happened. She settled into her seat and kept her eyes down, before elbowing Brent harshly in the side. She'd get him back for this, eventually.
For a minute, Delsin feared that wouldn’t be enough proof to her, enough to convince her to tell him how to control this. He held his breath — not that it mattered — and then exhaled heavily when she started to speak. Her words made sense, but he knew as soon as he tried to do it for himself that it was harder than she made it sound. He was literally putting himself back together again, making something out of nearly nothing. The first couple of times, he managed to condense the mist into the vague shape of his shoes before losing focus and causing it to spread out again.
He paused, just for a minute, and then really focused. Sometimes, how other Conduits did things didn’t really work with his brain. So Delsin just tried to feel the power out for himself. He felt how weightless he was, how little there was of him left. And then, instead of imagining himself coming together, he imagined himself becoming heavier, of being weighted toward the ground. Immediately, he felt things coming together, felt his hands return first. It was easier after that, and in a matter of minutes, he was whole and visible once again.
”That," he began, only after he was sure he wouldn’t spontaneously mist-ify again, "was the coolest feeling ever.”
[ Iris kept her eyes on the misty form, frowning softly. Was that what she looked like? And no one noticed except for this guy? She shook her head softly, and focused more on talking him through materialization. She bit down on the inside of her cheek, and looked almost confused when hands were the first thing she saw. Well, whatever worked, right? All Conduits were different and so were their methods, maybe this wasn't an exact copy of her abilities. She tilted her head slightly as finally he reformed, but his words were another surprise. ]
"I -- think its safe to say I wasn't expecting you to say that." [ She cleared her throat softly, and shifted awkwardly in her stance. ] "You.. got what you wanted, right?"
[ She didn't want to think about the memories he'd dragged back into the light. She didn't even care at this point what he knew. She felt small, insignificant. He was capable of so much and she should just.. disappear. She doubted anyone would really notice. She raised her fingers to rub her forehead, and sighed softly, heading back towards her room. She needed to pack up, get out of here. She'd apparently served her purpose here. ]

The Jaeger Academy was not, exactly, what Delsin had imagined it to be. The way the government talked up the program made him believe it was something incredible, something new and shiny and fun for him to play with. He should’ve known better, honestly. Although he was disappointed at how strict and rigid and not fun it had been in the beginning, Delsin couldn’t deny that he’d come a long way and was pretty damn good at what he did.
The training was hard, but he was resilient. It was Reggie who struggled with that — soft, sweet, clumsy Reggie — but Delsin had trouble with the logistics. The plan. Off-the-cuff was how he worked, but Reggie; Reggie knew how to lay out a plan and follow through. In the Drift, it was easy for Delsin to see things how Reggie saw them. He supposed the same was true for his brother. Maybe that was why they had been nearly drift compatible. Nearly, but not quite.
Still, they worked well together and managed almost forty drops and kills by the time their training was nearly over. The anticipation of those final weeks was, by far, the hardest. Delsin just wanted to get into their Jaeger and fight already. He’d seen it, twice, up close. A huge, terrifying Mark-2 Jaeger they called Rho Cielo. When Delsin had requested hot rod flames, Reggie had rolled his eyes; but when they saw it again weeks later, to test launch the Jaeger, there were hot rod flames painted up its legs and along the bottom of the helmet. While Reggie had been unamused, Delsin had been overjoyed and gave high-fives to the entire Jaeger maintenance team.
In those final weeks, Delsin could feel himself itching in his own skin — desperate to get into a Jaeger and out of the hallowed halls of the stupid Academy. He felt as if he’d done his time; he was ready for that stamp of approval that would change his life. The stamp that would turn him into a hero, one of the few lauded Jaeger pilots that protected the people. He knew Reggie was itching, too — though Delsin wasn’t sure if that was because he, too, was eager or if Delsin had rubbed off on him through the Drift.
The two of them walked into the training room day, dressed to spar. Delsin’s eyes jumped from person as he and Reggie made it to an empty mat. Not many were there today; there had been a recent graduation, he recalled, and a bunch of almost-graduates were testing their Jaegers today, too.
His eyes landed on a girl with violet hair, sparring off to one side with her brother. Abigail Walker — known more often as Fetch. And god, how he hated her. She was obnoxious, and rude, and always had an opinion on everything. (Reggie frequently pointed out that Delsin was pretty much the same as her, but Delsin usually punched him hard enough to shut him up afterward, so he didn’t really do it much anymore.)
”Y’know," Reggie said, causing Delsin to turn his head back to look at his brother. "With how much you stare and sigh and roll your eyes at her, you’d swear you were in love with her.”
”Shut up!" Delsin grunted and threw a solid punch at Reggie’s shoulder. They’d apparently been spending way too much time in the drift together, because Reggie actually had the sense to jump away before it could land, sending Delsin almost sprawling onto his face. He managed to catch his balance, in time for the trainer to get up onto the sparring ring at the center of the room.
”I’m sure you all are tired of sparring with your partners," she started without preamble, "so we’re going to change things up today. Pair you with someone you don’t know how to anticipate. Since you seem so eager to throw punches today — Delsin, get up here.”
He went willingly, because the trainer hadn’t been wrong; he had energy jumping out of every pore, and he was ready to burn it off. As he climbed into the ring, he saw Reggie amble over to Fetch and her brother. Of course Reggie was welcomed warmly. Reggie was a nice guy.
Delsin rolled his eyes.
”And… Fetch, how about you? Maybe Delsin can actually give you a run for your money for once." The trainer hopped down and turned to look at the ring. "You can start whenever you’re ready. Fights last —”
”Until someone taps or goes limp, yeah, I got it. Thanks, Tyler Durden," Delsin finished, giving another roll of his eyes. He turned his gaze to Fetch, once more narrowing them on her. "Are you comin’ up here, or are you gonna make me wait all damn day?”
Jeager training. To be honest, Fetch had never really thought it'd be her style. Her parents were both Jaeger engineers -- they kept the big things running while meatheads like Delsin Rowe got their rocks off to the idea of fighting some ten story monster from the deep. That was where Fetch had always figured she'd end up. In the bowels of a Jeager fresh off the field, fusing metal and checking joint mechanisms. But when her brother Brent signed up for pilot training it didn't take much convincing for her to sign up right alongside him. There wasn't a place he went where Abigail didn't follow suit.
The physical strain was hard to handle at first, but Fetch had a sort of stubborn determination that would not allow her to give in. Tactics weren't her thing, not really. She'd rather be allowed to work off the top of her head than to have to stick to some battle plan, and to some degree Brent was the same way. They'd gotten along well since the both of them were able to talk, and it was no surprise that their level of compatibility was high. Not high enough to be considered drift compatible, but right on the cusp.
That small percentage had become Fetch's target. She'd break down any obstacle in her path if she had to, but drift compatible was a rare thing and she wanted it more than she could express. She needed it to show her parents that she and Brent really had made the right decision by doing this. For Fetch, it was that or nothing at all.
There was only a few more weeks until graduation and she was getting a little antsy. She sat, stubbornly on the practice mat she and her brother shared. They only had a few more weeks to get to that level. She was so focused she didn't even make a snide comment as the Rowe boys finally decided to join them. Damn. She'd at least hoped he'd be one of the ones that'd gone and graduated so he could maybe at least get his ego checked. But she concentrated solely on her brother. His footwork had vastly improved since they started, at least. She jumped to her feet and raised her arms, grinning slightly. Her brother was strong, scarily so. But, she was a lot faster.
She'd only just gotten a hit or two in before their instructor's voice cut through. Brent stopped and she followed suit. New partners? Fetch frowned softly and crossed her arms. Well, at least that self-assured asshat was getting called out for his shit. She felt bad for whoever got stuck in there with him, though. She glanced to the side as Reggie joined them, and turned to at the very least say hello. Brent had barely gotten through being polite as always, when her shoulders tensed and she clamped her jaw.
Her? Really?
Turning back to the trainer, she uncrossed her arms and stood firmly in place.
"With all do respect an' all that crap, ma'am, you sure? I'd hate t'have to break his nose just t'prove a point."
The smirk on her face was undeniable, and behind her Brent sighed, muttering an apology on behalf of his sister. But even he lifted a brow when Delsin called her out. Fetch only blinked slowly and lifted a hand to him, quieting him like one would a child before looking to the person in charge for confirmation. She wasn't about to step into the ring with that prick until she was sure she'd be allowed to do anything she saw fit. With a word of confirmation, her shoulders rolled and she cracked her neck before hopping into the ring.
"Sorry to make y'wait, princess. Got a date with your bathroom mirror?"
Delsin’s heart thudded at her threat. It made sense for her to do that, and although Delsin feared being mist forever, he knew that wouldn’t be so. He always managed to get a handle on the powers on his own after a little while, though he got the feeling these ones would be more difficult than smoke or neon. “Ha ha," he retorted, though he was totally sure she couldn’t happen. "Very funny. Instant karma, I guess."
It was her question that reclaimed his attention after he became too focused on trying to get his body back — only succeeding in moving his misty body back and forth across the room. It was wicked cool, at least; that much, he couldn’t deny. But he wasn’t sure, at first, what she was getting at — before recalling his proclaimed desire to defeat Augustine.
He watched her expression for a moment, and then did as she asked. He jumped — though it was less like jumping and more like floating higher than he had been before. He hovered above the ground for a moment before drifting back toward the ground. Because of course he had been serious about that. He would defeat Augustine if it was the last thing he ever did.
[ Iris held her breath as he darted around the room like a small child. He was either really bad at this or really desperate to stand on solid feet again. She wrung her hands, trying to think. If he really was on an anti-DUP crusade and he could keep a secret.. Maybe. The visual confirmation -- a mist body jolting up and floating back down -- was what she'd asked for, but it just made dread pool in her stomach. It was.. hard to describe how she solidified. What if she said it wrong and he really was stuck like that forever? She swallowed softly before lifting her chin in a matter-of-fact manner. ]
"Okay, uh -- think. Think about solidity. Weight. You kinda have to.. piece yourself back together in your head. I usually start with my feet and work my way up."
[ It was a lot harder than it sounded. The first time it happened she'd re-solidified out of fear. All of a sudden she'd been flying and she just wanted to get down by any means necessary. So, her body reacted accordingly. Since then she'd learned that fear was not the best way to go when it came to mastery of her abilities. Besides, it didn't look like this guy had an ounce of fear in his bones. Must be nice to be that confident. ]
Admittedly, Eugene looked a little disappointed that the girl took him to be a cruel kind of guy. Leaving someone out there to fend for themselves, especially if they were a Conduit? He was supposed to save them. He was supposed to keep them away from all the bad while still letting them be free, and that’s just what he intended on doing.
The marching above caused hues to snap up instantaneously, eyes trailing the pipes and watching them shake with the rumbling from the soldiers.
Brutal m o n s t e r s.
“I’d never toss anyone back out, thanks. I’m here to h e l p, not be an absolute… dick.”
Thanks for the lessons on insults, Delsin.
[ Iris swallowed dryly, a small smile tugging the corners of herlips upward. One hand rested on her hip, while the other extended towards him. ]
"For the record, I'm glad I was wrong. It's.. good to meet you."
[ That, at the very least was the honest truth. Fear was the greatest weapon the DUP had, and if even just one person was willing to stand up to them, then maybe this city had a chance of staying on her map. One person could bring influence. Hell, if someone could take care of those anti-drug activists that kept her up at night that'd be even better. But, that wasn't what she needed to focus on right now. Hand still extended, she cleared her throat softly. ]
"Think we could maybe try being friends? Promise this whole.. appearing in here thing isn't a habit."
