South Africa is plagued by Gender Based Violence (GBV).
The countryâs femicide rate is now five times higher than the global average.
This week South Africans have collectively mourned after the rape and murder of a young university student (Uyinene Mrwetyana). Her death resonates throughout South Africa among both womxm and men, largely because of the circumstances. She was raped and murdered in broad daylight going to the post office.
Protests have been initiated across the country in hopes of legislative and attitudinal changes.
I'm sharing this information because it deserves attention, she deserves attention, we as womxm deserve to feel safe.
(I know this isn't studyblr related but as a young South African female this issue has a direct impact on my everyday life.)

Hey, hope you all had a good start to September đż
Thought that I would give you guys a lil peak at my diary/planner.
As you can see, I opted for an undated version this year so I print out a one month calendar for each month. At the beginning of the year (top left picture) I would put that at the beginning of the month, before the daily pages, but it was just alot of unnecessary flipping between pages. Now I prefer to have each week pasted at the top of that week's spread (top right picture).
From the bottom picture you can see that I also tend to section off each month as it passes. This allows me easy access to each month.
What you'll also see is that I use my calendar print out to record my lecture topic(s) for the day. I usually fill it out at the beginning of the month for the entire month. I love this, it allows an easy look at the week and what needs to be reviewed and prepped.
Happy Spring everyone!
Hope you enjoyed this post. Xxx
I am currently both a teacher and a student, and I am of the apparently controversial opinion that late work should always be accepted. Not just if they have a doctorâs note or their momâs death certificate. Not just for one or two assignments a semester. Always.
âBut thatâs unfair to the people who submitted on time!â
I didnât say you had to give everybody full credit. Drop the grade for each individual assignment by 5% for every day late until it gets down to 20%. Never, ever take it below 20%.
Hereâs my rationale:
1. If you are a good educator, then you created that assignment in the first place because YOU WANTED YOUR STUDENTS TO LEARN SOMETHING. You still want them to have an incentive to complete that learning experience even if itâs not âon time.â
2. You want to prepare your students for the the real world, right? Well, if you missed a deadline (for example, submitting report cards), would your boss throw away everything youâd worked on, dock your paycheck, and tell you to try again next time? No. They would be upset with you, but they would ask you to take time out of your schedule to finish the project as quickly as possible. It wouldnât cease to exist.
3. Based on point #2, if you are teaching high school or below, not accepting late work is holding children (who by the way, generally do not have full control over their schedules or what materials they have access to) to a higher standard than adults.Â
4. If you are teaching college or graduate school, you are working with adults who are taking years out of their lives and paying thousands of dollars to learn from you. Why make it harder for them than it already is?
5. You have or will teach students with extenuating life circumstances that they donât tell you about (e.g. chronic illness, caring for children or sick relatives, abusive relationships) because they are embarrassed to share this information or have already been taught to shut up and stop making excuses.
6. You have or will teach students with learning disabilities that they donât even know about. I was diagnosed with ADHD in high school after years of being treated like I was just a bad kid. I suffered from depression and anxiety for over ten years before I went on medication. I did not even learn the words âexecutive dysfunctionâ until I was in grad school.
In conclusion, yes, we all know that being a teacher gives you authority but thatâs no reason to flaunt it by imposing restrictions that donât exist anywhere else in the name of âeducation.â

Wrote my final tax assessment, before the exam, today. I think it went okay. Fingers crossed.
On the other hand, I recently bought this new candel and I'm in love! It makes my whole room smell incredible.

I am having thee absolute worst day đđđ. Found out a recent assessment I wrote had 2 sessions and I only wrote session 1!!!!
How did this happen!? I feel so dumbđ« I cried for about 30min... but it's the middle of the week and I've got stuff to do. I guess my meltdown will have to wait for the weekend.
Itâs June in England, which means the sun is rising before 5am and itâs not dark until 10pm. I didnât notice the increasingly earlier sunrise times because before yesterday it was mostly cloudy for quite a while. But now Iâm wishing I had curtains. Itâs going to be over 70F today aka canât keep me out of the garden.Â
