According to Chinese folktales, dogs can see supernatural and a long howl will mean imminent death. Mediums will smear fluid from dogs eyes over theirs to see the supernatural. Regular people who do it will die from the shock of seeing the afterlife

The Chinese believe that there is a torch of life on each shoulder. If someone calls you from behind, turn your whole body around to face them or you will blow a torch out if you look over your shoulder.
