my wall got repainted, which was the perfect excuse to redecorate it. might add more stuff soon, but i already love how it turned out.

finals start in less than a month so it’s full speed ahead from now on. already finished an assignment due in june this weekend (what’s happening?!) so i can fully focus on those dreaded finals.

happy 4th everyone! nothing like studying at a coffee shop to get the holiday started. didn’t have any special planned for today. i found my little study session therapeutic today. i also started listening to cody ko & noel miller’s podcast on youtube. it’s quite interesting and i would definitely recommend it!

☆ As you Know / -잖아요 ☆

Hello Everyone ~ ! I have been getting a lot of requests recently asking for grammar above the beginner level – which means the majority of my followers are getting better at Korean! This, of course, makes me really happy, but if you are still confused about anything, please don’t hesitate to ask me.

Today I wanted to talk about ‘-잖아요’, ‘As you know,’ in Korean. This is a really common grammar ending to use when you are talking to someone [however, it is not to be used in formal situations or to people you talk to in respect]. -잖아요 is used when the speaker tells the listener about something that they should know. It can be used as ‘I told you so’ and ‘you should know that’ as well. For this, I will be separating it into 3 sections:

과거 [past]

현재 [present]

미래 [future]

To note, you don’t conjugate every verb attached. If there is or isn’t batchim (받침) in the infinitive, then you just take away the -다. Examples:

*this is also applicable to verb stems ending in ‘오’ and verb stems including ‘하’ – past tense exception*

과거:

갔잖아요 – I told you // You should know that // As you know, I went

봤잖아요 – I told you // You should know that // As you know, I saw it

했잖아요 – I told you // You should know that // As you know, I did it

먹었잖아요 – I told you // You should know that // As you know, I ate it

현재:

가잖아요 – I go

보잖아요 – I see

하잖아요 – I do

먹잖아요 – I eat

미래:

갈 거잖아요 – I will go

볼 거잖아요 – I will see

할 거잖아요 – I will do

먹을 거잖아요 – I will eat

The last way that you can use ‘-잖아요’ is when you attach it to a noun and ‘이다’ (to be).

과거:

If the NOUN ends in a vowel, then you add – 였잖아요. If the NOUN ends in a consonant, then you add – 이었잖아요. Examples:

책이었잖아요

사과였잖아요

현재:

In the present tense, you add (이)잖아요 for consonants!

책이잖아요

사과잖아요

애인 = lover // 힘들다 = to be strong

3급 문법- 거든(요)

‘~거든(요’)는 동사에 붙어 주로 상대방이 모르는 내용을 설명할 때 사용해요. ‘~거든(요)’는 구어로 가까운 관계에서 사용하기 때문에 윗사람에게 사용할 때는 주의해야 해요.  Attached to a verb, it is usually used to explain something the other person doesn’t know. It is used in close relationships so be careful about using it with superiors.  예문 (Example Sentences):

✦가: 왜 이렇게 공불를 열심히 해요? Why do you study so hard? 나: 다음 주에 시험을 보거든요. I have a test next week. 

✦가: 요즘 바빠요? Are you busy these days? 나: 네, 회사 일이 좀 많거든요. Yes, I have a lot of office work to do.

✦저는 운동을 좋아해요. 운동을 하면 스트레스가 풀리거든요. I like exercising. I relieve stress when I exercise.  ✦토요일에 시간 있으면 우리 집에 오세요. 제 생일이거든요. If you have time on Saturday, please come to my house. It’s my birthday. 

또한 화제를 제시할 때도 사용할 수 있어요.  You can also use it to present a topic.

예문(Example Sentences):

✦어제 명동에 갔거든요. 그런데 외국인이 정말 많았어요.I went to Myeongdong yesterday. But there were a lot of foreigners there.  ✦제 취미가 독서거든요. 그래서 시간 있을 때마다 책을 읽어요. My hobby is reading. So when I have time, I read books.

🌹Expressing Beauty in Korean

🌺예쁘다- (usually the physical appearance of something) pretty

꽃이 예쁘다 - the flower is pretty

 🌺이쁘다- “slang” version of 예쁘다

옷이 이쁘다 - the clothes are pretty

 🌺아름답다- beautiful

하늘이 아름답다 - the sky is beautiful

 🌺곱다- (usually a color or object) gives a “soft” vibe and is therefore beautiful

한복 색깔이 곱다 - the hanbok colors are beautiful

 🌺아리땁다 (아리따운)- (usually a female) “beautified” and more poetic way of saying beautiful

아리따운 소녀 - the beautiful girl

 🌺어여쁘다- (usually a person or a personified object, or their personality/elegance) a poetic and somewhat “older” way of saying lovely

어여쁜 공주 - the lovely (in personality or elegance) princess

🌺예쁘장하다- (the physical looks of a person or an object) gives off a small/cutesy vibe 

예쁘장하게 생긴 여자아이 - the cute little girl

🌺귀엽다- (usually a person or animal) cute/lovely

강아지가 귀엽다 - the puppy is cute

 🌺사랑스럽다- (usually a person or animal) lovely

내 남자친구는 사랑스럽다 - my boyfriend is lovely

 🌺잘생겼다- (usually a male) handsome, literally means good looking

Adjectives with Dupicate Kanji Followed by しい

So, this post idea basically boils down to my being interested in the adjectives that use the same kanji twice or phrase twice in a row following my discovery of 馬鹿馬鹿しい. Here are the ones I found which seemed most practical.

馴々しい (or 馴れ馴れしい, なれなれしい) overfamiliar

馬鹿馬鹿しい (ばかばかしい) ludicrous

若々しい (わかわかしい) youthful

生々しい (なまなましい) lively, green, fresh

騒々しい (そうぞうしい) noisy, boisterous
