Listen everyone just cause your in a scientific field doesn’t make you smart enough to not make mistakes in the field
Well my week has been exciting so far.
I had some other work to do this morning (Figuring out some algae stuff involving 1000 L mesocosm up a mountain) so mystery species has been sitting alone in the lab all morning…..
Made it up to the lab today to find this. It’s probably from the fridge defrosting and not the creepy “algae”.
June 13th Update.
According to a few colleagues it’s either a plant, an algae, or a fungi. So that’s been helpful.
After a day with some sunlight I think I might be seeing some chloroplasts.
It seems to like the nutrient solution I added yesterday though!
I for one welcome our new plant, algae, or fungi overlords.
I was about to say “in a sensible lab people wouldn’t waste time with this, they’d autoclave the bottles and move on” but on reflection I can’t think of a single bio lab I’ve been in that wouldn’t immediately go “ooh, mystery algae, that sounds like a fun challenge; let’s devote multiple hours to identifying it for no reason”.
I need updates tell me about the algae
The mystery algae/plant/fungi/alien is stuck in the university growth chamber. With everything going on I probably won’t get to check in on it until September, possibly not until 2021.
So by that time it will have developed what, writing?
God I hope so, then I can train it to write my thesis!
This entire post is the most on-brand biologist thing I have seen in my entire godforsaken life. The moment this pandemic is over these guys have another crisis ready for us.
Can we get an update cause this is crazy
Update: Due to the global pandemic, the algae has been left alone in a weird hidden growth chamber for a year and will likely stay there for another year. Enjoy that information!
Oh god oh fuck oh Jesus fuck
In between commissions, I’ve been working on a comic! The first ““issue/chapter” is already done, so I may as well start posting it here!
Here’s the first three pages of WE CAST STRANGE SHAPES: DRAGON TEETH!

Hi! I have a friend who has some lichen but isnt entirely sure how to take care if it. Do you have any, like, big things that they should know?
ok my dude im not even joking here, science does not know how to grow or take care of lichens. like, lichens have thus far never been grown successfully from scratch in a laboratory environment, and as far as we can tell they only grow in places theyve deemed Worthy according to a set of rules that is mostly mysterious to us (we know that some lichen species prefer certain trees or rocks or whatnot, and we know that some lichens won’t grow if the air quality is too bad, but the inner big brained lichen alchemy going on in there is still an enigma clearly beyond petty human comprehension). what we know for sure is that lichens seem to occur wherever a compatible algal and fungal spore meet in a location that is very specific to their needs, at the right stage in their life cycle, and we know that after that there’s a process where the two species make sure they’re compatible before they do anything in terms of growing into an actual lichen (another lichen question we dont know the answer to yet is ‘how do they know?’). if two compatible symbionts meet too late in the life cycle, they grow into the normal, non-lichenized fungus or algae species they represent (given that they’re in the right environment) and can’t recognize each other or become a lichen if they meet as adults.
all this being said, we also know that some species are incredibly, incredibly tough, as we’ve seen from the multiple space lichen studies that have seen them live up to a year outside the ISS. a caveat to all of this is that there are labs that grow lichens, but they do this by physically getting a lichen from the wild, grinding it up, cleaning it, and then putting the pieces into test tubes; i dont know the details of this process more than that, but you get the idea. the lichens that result from this are genetically identical to the lichen that got ground up. it’s basically just capitalizing on having all the ‘ingredients’ already there.
in short: lichens aren’t really like plants in the sense that there’s a given way to grow them. the lichen rules itself. it is the maker of its own destiny. i recommend just visiting local lichens in the neighborhood from time to time instead; they just kinda take care of themselves. just some anomalous self-cleaning ovens out there, everywhere, on all continents, just vibing
OMG there’s a follow-up story to THIS ONE
GLORIOUS
OH MY GOD.
Today is the 3rd year anniversary of my webcomic The Sword Interval. Above are some panels from the past year of work.
This is a modern-day (well, 1995) supernatural action-adventure comic with elements of horror. Over the last year of updates, our heroes have dealt with a child-snatching dryad, uncovered just a portion of a shadowy organization’s true goals, and taken part in a massive car-chase that’s killing me to draw.
The Sword Interval has been a really great job and I am so happy I have been given this chance to make a comic as my full-time career. Stressful as it can be keeping up with this update schedule, it’s ultimately been a really good experience. Thank you to Webtoon for having me, my wife Aurora for being supportive, my friend Ali for being a good soundboard and for providing a copious amount of guest comics, and my friend Natasha for doing the flat colors and putting up with my work schedule. And of course thanks to everyone that reads the comic and spreads the word about it. Word of mouth is the best way to grow an audience.
I’m also using this milestone to launch a sale on my store. I’m moving soon, and could use a little extra cash for the move, not to mention the more books sold the less boxes need to be packed up and transported. So from now till the end of July, my books are 30% off.
Hey y’all! My husband’s comic is pretty spiffy and if you aren’t reading it yet, you should be!!! It’s beautiful and he puts so much work into it, it’s unreal!! <3
Sword Interval is an amazing story, one of my favorite webcomics, and Ben is a super cool dude to match. It’s a story totally worth rereading after you get up to date, just to appreciate the subtle stuff... ... And also the monsters, gotta appreciate the monsters. Congratulations on Year 3, Ben! Keep on being that cool comics guy!
