Present tense is usually formed by adding 아 or 오 to a verb stem. (also 요 to talk formally)

If the last vowel of the verb stem is a 아 or 오 followed by a consonant,  아요 is added to the end and 다 is removed.

When the verb stem ends with 아 without a consonant following 요 is added:

자다 = 자요

Stems that end in ㅗ are often shortened to 와:

오다 = 와요

Any other character you remove the -다 and add -어요:

It’s that time of year again. We are all excited to begin a new year of academics; it means new stationery, new teachers, new beginning. On the other hand, we’re all nervous about early mornings, late nights, copious amounts of stress, and lots of mental breakdowns. Hopefully, this post will make your life a little easier, teach you something new, or introduce you to awesome products you’ve never heard of!

These are some of my favorite apps to help me get through my school year. I’ve included some for both iOS and Android products, as well as a few Chrome extensions!

“The Homework App” (iOS) - This cute little app allows you to keep track of all your school assignments. You can add classes, color code them, add assignments, and SO much more. It’s probably one of the most helpful planning apps I’ve ever downloaded. I do fine without buying the premium version.

“Chegg Flashcards+” (iOS/Android) - BEST FLASHCARD APP I’VE FOUND. Seriously this app is great. Upgraded version definitely not worth it. The other Chegg apps are pretty nice for homework help as well.

“Sunshine” (iOS) - This app isn’t exactly school related, but if you’re very temperature sensitive like me, it’s perfect. Design is adorable, and I love the notification you get every morning!

“Sleepytime” (iOS/Android/Web) - This sleep scheduler is perfect for those of us who have a lot of trouble getting up in the morning. You just put in the time you’re falling asleep and it gives you all the recommended wake up times based on your sleep cycles so you don’t wake up wanting to die!

“Forest” (iOS/Android/Chrome) - If you get distracted by your phone or the internet while studying, you need this app. It’s a timer that grows a little tree while you focus! Be careful though, if you leave the app for too long, the cute lil thing will die!

“Socratic” (iOS) - Need help with a homework question? This app gotchu. Just type it or take a picture, and it provides you with resources, step by step instructions, and, of course, the answer.

“Grammarly” (Chrome/OSX) - Awesome little spell/grammar checking app. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with Google Docs.

“Any.do” (iOS/Android/Chrome) - Task list app. I use this seriously every day.

Whether you’ve been collecting stationery your whole life or have just been introduced to the studyblr world and have no idea what’s popular, this section will be a dream.

The famous Muji gel pens - Luv luv luv these! Cheap, high quality, and adorable, these are great for starter pens.

Pilot G2 Gel Pen - These are pretty popular. They’re inexpensive and moderately good quality. Personally they aren’t my favorite.

Staedtler Triplus Fineliner - My favorite fineliners! The triangular shape makes them easy to hold, and they don’t bleed through paper much.

Stabilo .88 Fineliners - Since they’re so similar to the Staedtler fineliners, most people pick one or the other. I have both because I like to have a variety of colors, but it’s up to you really!

Zebra Mildliners - These highlighters are known for the variety of cute colors, I just love em! They’re great quality, my only complaint is that some pens (Muji gel pens in particular I’ve found) can smear a lot with these.

Clear Tipped Highlighters - These are awesome for textbooks. Sharpie has some, and so does Muji.

Muji notebooks - I use these for bullet journaling (if you don’t know what that is, check out this video here) and as paper for mind maps. They have tons of different kinds, my favorite being this dotted notebook. Very inexpensive as well!

Moleskine Notebooks - These are SUPER popular. I’ve never used one, but I’ve heard great things!

Campus Kokuyo Paper - This paper is my favorite. You can get it in notebooks or loose leaf. My favorite is the graph paper. I use it for my notes daily. If you’re going to use it often, I’d recommend getting the binder notebook for them as they don’t work well in normal binders.

WASHI TAPE! - Who can forget? I have a huge collection of them. Get them from Etsy, Target, Amazon, and pretty much any craft store.

School is stressful. We all get down. Here’s some tips to help alleviate some of that worry!

TAKE A BREAK. I cannot stress this enough. Overworking yourself is the worst thing you can do. Put down the textbook, listen to some music, have a cup of green tea, and just chill for a bit.

Get lots and lots of sleep! I know it’s not always possible, but try to aim for at LEAST 7 hours a night. It will help so much, I promise!

Organize! When I’m stressed, I like to regain control over my life. Try bullet journaling if you haven’t already. Make lists. Get a calendar. Organize your room or your study space.

This is how I did the one for my librarian position.  I hope it helps.

Dear Person Hiring for this Job,

I am writing to ask you to consider me for X position.  This is a paragraph about why I want to do X position in general.  It includes at least one personal detail and at least one job skill I consider a particular strength.  It argues that I am passionate about this career.  It is not long.

I have had the opportunity to gain experience in this job by - paragraph about my work or study experience.  It should go from most recent experience back.  Include some details about your responsibilities/achievements in your most recent or most important positions.  If you have mostly study experience, give more detail about what exactly you studied.  If you shadowed people, mention that.  If your work experience is largely unrelated, try to shoehorn some of it in (e.g. I gained experience working with people by).  You can supplement with relevant hobbies.  (But if you do have recent, relevant work experience, you should largely be detailing that.  Only embroider the other stuff if you need to flesh it out.)  This should be the longest paragraph.

I hope you will consider allowing me to do X thing at your company.  This is a few sentences about why I want to work at your company in particular and what I think I could bring.  Try to mention at least one detail from the company website, so they know you visited it.  This is a short paragraph that parallels the first one.

Two other points, to challenge what’s being said above a little:

1) Remember that the person reading this cover letter wants to know how you can contribute to the company. Not how excited you are about the position: it’s all about what they gain. Try framing the whole thing in that sense — “You would gain my X awesome skill that would help you Y with your mission.” “Here’s why I’m awesome and a great fit for making your company go better.”

2) At the end, ask for the interview. “I am available at PHONE NUMBER at your convenience. I look forward to speaking with you about this great opportunity soon.” Maybe even say you’ll be following up at a specific time and date. Ask for the job. People respond to that, and it’s a good way to fake confidence until you make it. Ask for the job.

Okay, three points. People reading cover letters get SO BORED going through them. Think about starting off with a story that relates to why you’re interested in the job, or that demonstrates a skill or a strong interest that would make you a good candidate. Be memorable — people remember stories, even (maybe especially) very little ones.

Bonjour! We all know language learning is fun, but it’s still studying, and sometimes you just get really tired of studying. And if you’re like me and you’re intermediate in a language, it gets to the point where you want to start using the language instead of just endlessly reading textbooks and doing the same practice questions over and over. So I’ve compiled a list of things you could do where you’re learning a language without it feeling like you’re studying!

- ̗̀ Reading ̖́- 

Books. Pick up a book in your target language and just read it, with no need to analyze it or answer end-of-chapter questions. Don’t worry about every single foreign word you come across, try to get the general idea of it from the context. But if a word shows up a lot and you still don’t get it, you can look it up! Children’s books are great, too.

Comics. Basically just dialogue with pictures to help you understand what the characters are talking about. Need I say more.

Blogs. Follow a blog in your target language which posts about something you’re interested in. Blogs usually have less formal language than novels, are of course a lot shorter, and have lots of pictures.

Wikipedia. Whenever you’re curious about something and want to casually look it up, switch to the page in your target language. If you want to, you can always read the article in your native language first to understand the topic.

- ̗̀ Listening ̖́-

Films and tv. Some have more complex dialogue than others, some have simpler, so there are films and tv shows for almost every level of language learning. If you can’t find a movie originally in your target language, find a dubbed version, it’s better than nothing!

Cartoons. Or live-action movies/shows aimed at children. These usually have dialogue that’s easier to understand than those aimed at older viewers. Also they’re fun!

Youtube. If you can find vloggers who upload videos in your target language, then go ahead and watch them. Kind of the same thing as with blogs, where the language is more “everyday”!

Music. Listen to songs in your target language. It’s okay if you don’t understand everything or even anything, the most important thing is to get used to how the language sounds!

- ̗̀ Writing ̖́-

Keeping a diary. This is by far my favourite thing to do when it comes to language learning. The point of this isn’t to write a flawless essay with no mistakes, no one has to read your private diary anyway. The point is to get used to producing a text and expressing yourself in your target language. Start with writing about your day in the present tense. Go on to write about something that happened yesterday. Write about your feelings and what you think will happen in the future. If you want to express something but don’t know the word, look it up. Woo, new vocab word! 

Short stories. Similar as above, but experiment with verb tenses and sentence structure. Use the fanciest words you know to make that description extra descriptive. Learn to use idioms and similes and metaphors. Your story can be as complex or as simple as you want it to be. And this time, get someone to correct it!

Letters and texts. Get a pen pal who speaks your target language, if you can! Or even just an internet friend you can text with. You can even practice speaking with them via Skype or maybe even in person if that’s possible. What better thing to do with a language than do what it’s meant for: communication!

Anything else. When writing down your daily to-dos in your planner, write them in your target language. Jot down that reminder on a post-it note but do it in your target language. Anything.

Right now, I’m sifting through 50+ applications for a new entry-level position. Here’s some advice from the person who will actually be looking at your CV/resume and cover letter:

‘You must include a cover letter’ does not mean ‘write a single line about why you want this position’. If you can’t be bothered to write at least one actual paragraphs about why you want this job, I can’t be bothered to read your CV.

Don’t bother including a list of your interests if all you can think of is ‘socialising with friends’ and ‘listening to music’. Everyone likes those things. Unless you can explain why the stuff you do enriches you as a person and a candidate (e.g. playing an instrument or a sport shows dedication and discipline) then I honestly don’t care how you spend your time. I won’t be looking at your CV thinking ‘huh, they haven’t included their interests, they must have none’, I’m just looking for what you have included.

Even if you apply online, I can see the filename you used for your CV. Filenames that don’t include YOUR name are annoying. Filenames like ‘CV - media’ tell me that you’ve got several CVs you send off depending on the kind of job advertised and that you probably didn’t tailor it for this position. ‘[Full name] CV’ is best.

USE. A. PDF. All the meta information, including how long you worked on it, when you created it, times, etc, is right there in a Word doc. PDFs are far more professional looking and clean and mean that I can’t make any (unconscious or not) decisions about you based on information about the file.

I don’t care what the duties in your previous unrelated jobs were unless you can tell me why they’re useful to this job. If you worked in a shop, and you’re applying for an office job which involves talking to lots of people, don’t give me a list of stuff you did, write a sentence about how much you enjoyed working in a team to help everyone you interacted with and did your best to make them leave the shop with a smile. I want to know what makes you happy in a job, because I want you to be happy within the job I’m advertising.

Does the application pack say who you’ll be reporting to? Can you find their name on the company website? Address your application to them. It’s super easy and shows that you give enough of a shit to google something. 95% of people don’t do this.

Tell me who you are. Tell me what makes you want to get up in the morning and go to work and feel fulfilled. Tell me what you’re looking for, not just what you think I’m looking for.

I will skim your CV. If you have a bunch of bullet points, make every one of them count. Make the first one the best one. If it’s not interesting to you, it’s probably not interesting to me. I’m overworked and tired. Make my job easy.

“I work well in a team or individually” okay cool, you and everyone else. If the job means you’ll be part of a big team, talk about how much you love teamwork and how collaborating with people is the best way to solve problems. If the job requires lots of independence, talk about how you are great at taking direction and running with it, and how you have the confidence to follow your own ideas and seek out the insight of others when necessary. I am profoundly uninterested in cookie-cutter statements. I want to know how you actually work, not how a teacher once told you you should work.

For an entry-level role, tell me how you’re looking forward to growing and developing and learning as much as you can. I will hire genuine enthusiasm and drive over cherry-picked skills any day. You can teach someone to use Excel, but you can’t teach someone to give a shit. It makes a real difference.

This is my advice for small, independent orgs like charities, etc. We usually don’t go through agencies, and the person reading through the applications is usually the person who will manage you, so it helps if you can give them a real sense of who you are and how you’ll grab hold of that entry level position and give it all you’ve got. This stuff might not apply to big companies with actual HR departments - it’s up to you to figure out the culture and what they’re looking for and mirror it. Do they use buzzwords? Use the same buzzwords! Do they write in a friendly, informal way? Do the same! And remember, 95% of job hunting (beyond who you know and flat-out nepotism, ugh) is luck. If you keep getting rejected, it’s not because you suck. You might just need a different approach, or it might just take the right pair of eyes landing on your CV.

And if you get rejected, it’s worthwhile asking why. You’ve already been rejected, the worst has already happened, there’s really nothing bad that can come out of you asking them for some constructive feedback (politely, informally, “if it isn’t too much trouble”). Pretty much all of us have been hopeless jobseekers at one point or another. We know it’s shitty and hard and soul-crushing. Friendliness goes a long way. Even if it’s just one line like “your cover letter wasn’t inspiring" at least you know where to start.

And seriously, if you have any friends that do any kind of hiring or have any involvement with that side of things, ask them to look at your CV with a big red pen and brutal honesty. I do this all the time, and the most important thing I do is making it so their CV doesn’t read exactly like that of every other person who took the same ‘how-to-get-a-job’ class in school. If your CV has a paragraph that starts with something like ‘I am a highly motivated and punctual individual who–’ then oh my god I AM ALREADY ASLEEP.

how did you figure out how to do hands

well when I do hands I tend to break them into 3 big shapes 

starting with the wrist then palm, thumb then the fingers 

once I have the big shapes in I separate the fingers

here are some more examples of the different parts

one of the best ways that I learned how to draw hands was to draw a LOT of them, in different poses, while looking at a reference. This is a site that I found useful, 

it has 3D models of hands that you can change the view so you can see the same pose from different angles. p.s. this site i linked to does contain nude figures just a heads up

Hey jelly beans don’t forget when you’re working on your resumes that commissions 100% count as job experience! Label that shit ‘freelance work’ and name a few clients or projects!

freelance/commission skills:

- self directed - incorporating feedback - adaptable - satisfying client expectations - working closely with clients/ working one on one  - meeting deadlines - communication skills 

What counts as freelance work?:

- basically anything anybody asked you to do  - if it’s for a company or group name them  - if your mom or a friend or a stranger bought a painting or sketch from you they are an individual commissioner/client  (if your mom asked you to make something for her organization/club/publication/thing put down the name of that group as your client!)  - if you entered a contest with your work it was created ‘on spec’ (speculative basis)  - if you made work for free for a cause you believe in it’s ‘pro bono’ - sometimes personal projects are worth mentioning, it’s a ‘self initiated project’  TIP: if you worked and weren’t paid/weren’t paid a lot you don’t have to mention that you didn’t get $s

You don’t have to list every job you’ve done- go with a shortlist of the most exciting, while implying that you’ve done more!

If the job you’re trying to snag involves the art/design/the stuff you do, definitely make sure to include a link to your website, or a pdf portfolio! Make it easy to see your work!
