How can you claim to be a feminist if you are against the rights of women and men to do what they want with their bodies? While the poor standards of pornography and sexual work are a problem, the concept of destroying porn and sex work entirely is not the solution. Why would you want there to be no porn at all, rather than porn made by women who want to do porn and who are happy with their work? Why would you want there to be no prostitution, rather than prostitution that is regulated and safe?
Because I live in the real world and in the real world porn and prostitution are inexorably linked with the exploitation, rape, degradation, and death of women. Â By monetizing and selling womenâs bodies womenâs bodies are turned into commodities that can be bought, sold, and even âstolenâ. Â Further, if money is exchanging hands (as with prostitution and most porn) there can not be true consent. Â If the choice is between starving and doing porn or withdrawal and porn then there isnât really a choice. Â
I advocate for the criminalization of the people (overwhelmingly men) who buy sex while decriminalizing the victims (the women who are prostitutes or porn stars). Â I also advocate for exit strategies to be designed and implemented so that women who are ready to leave the lifestyle have the resources and training that they need for a different means of income as well as housing, food, and healthcare so that they and their children are able to begin recovering from their trauma.
Women who are happy with their work in porn and prostitution are the minority and often come from privileged backgrounds. Â They are not the majority.
