It’d been far too long since Brooke had been able to go home to see Danes and Elisa. The voicemail was unexpected. She felt her heart start to crack into a million pieces as she listened to her daughter, sounding quite a lot older than she’d heard her last. Tears started to well up, and finally Brooke stopped the message and dialed Danes’ number. The dial tone droned, and Brooke slid out of her chair to reach for her vortex manipulator in the drawer of her desk. 

"—Danes?"

Danes had not been expecting his phone to ring while he was making dinner-spaghetti with "meat clouds"-for himself and Elisa, who was at the table coloring. He didn't look at the ID before answering, if he had, he probably wouldn't have nearly dropped his phone in the sauce.

"B-B-Brooke?" He cleared his throat. "Brooke you're...you're...you're o-o-okay then?"
