Gwayne’s little speech was not a genuine offer btw, he was pretty clearly bullshitting Criston to try to talk him out of what they both know is a suicide mission. He’s freaking the fuck out and taking the information Criston gave him last episode (Criston’s father lost everything when the lord they served lost favor) to try to offer a solution (I am highborn and I will make sure you have a place, see? No need to kill us both). There was a stilted tone and a grimace when Gwayne said “A knight of your…stature would be….most welcome” and Criston caught it immediately because he’s lived in king’s landing for 20 years and besides the fact that he knows goddamn well when someone’s trying to talk him down because this isn’t even the first time a Hightower tried to talk him down from killing himself, what exactly did living get him then? What would it get him now, a few more months of life being a guard dog at the whims of a different jackass? To Ormund, who Gwayne has just told him is a miserable cunt? No, he’s delayed his death for long enough and he will not be choosing a clean death, and it can’t be an easy one — those are too easily avoidable. No one will be coming to take the blade from his throat this time, he will make sure of it.

did i or did i not just watch alicent hightower sit down in front of the lemon tree mural, as she told rhaenyra that she sent her last child to the house with the red door home she barely remembers so that he might grow up outside the suffocating walls of the red keep. so that he might live as a hightower instead of a targaryen. but in her attempt to keep him from becoming his father, she cursed him to become her instead. an outsider among the natives. who doesn’t know what he wants beyond his father figure’s desire to make him king of the seven kingdom’s. the blue queen in chains.

my favorite ongoing bit this season is the comedic timing every time rhaenyra is in the council room yelling mostly to herself and mysaria about all the things she's gonna get done that day and all the decisions she's gonna make by herself in her infinite wisdom as queen to DESTROY the HIGHTOWER TRAITORS and then it immediately cuts to her storming into alicent's chambers to get her piece of daily advice and a peck on the cheek

You go out on one errand for your sister and suddenly everyone wants you to stand in the grave of a man whose hubris brought him only death and ruin so they can dim the light in your eyes by casting the shadow of their nihilism over you but as a knight named Gawain Gwayne you have a subconscious instinct for this kind of bullshit and you’d like to just do a normal quest and maybe get a laurel thank you very much so you’re like alright yes I see that your white armor no longer shines and your seat is casting a broken halo behind you can w— yes I see that the symbol of state power is a necklace of hands around your neck which already figuratively choked the life out of you ca—oooh my god YES I know you clearly intend to harp on this metaphor by using the unwarranted authority granted to you by your station to spitefully hang everyone else with the noose around your own neck we don’t have t— dude YES I can SEE you intend on committing a crime so craven and heinous that it’ll blacken my soul beyond repair too thus shattering my idealistic morals as a knight and leaving me at beast soaked in the blood of the innocents I swore to protect.
