I have such little respect for the Freedom of Form Foundation and its offshoots, and every time I interact with anyone involved with those kinds of projects, I somehow lose more respect. We're talking about regrowing cartilage, something that has plagued medical science since the field began thousands of years ago, and all you can think about is how it can turn you into a furry??

The comment section is 99% dysphoric teens and tweens getting their hopes up, and the OP hinting that she'll definitely be the one to revolutionize medicine as we know it, because I guess she's driven by transspecies passion, which no other scientist before has had, or something.

Sorry, but I just think our money would be better spent on actual fulltime research scientists working on regrowing cartilage than your sidegig.

"Anatomically feasible" my ass; if you cared about anatomical feasibility you'd be working with ape therians. We all know why you picked canines as your starting point instead of your pipe dream.

Here I wrote in details. That was such a hot dispute, and as a result it's me who's the uneducated one.

Like yeah, if you're such geniuses that promise to make a biological breakthrough (they really promise making full transition possible in thirty years!), then why not work with long existing physical health aspects?.. So people won't need to go through amputation and so on. So people can get healthier bodies overall. Nah, they'll start with anthros.

I had such a heated argument with some naive folks there that tried so hard to convince me how the fff are quiet anonymous heroes who need just a biiiit of time and their project will be real!.. And the admins almost banned me because I was "trolling or disrespectful to alterhuman identities". What. And where. I'm disrespectful to the fff specifically.

I get species dysphoria too, I'm not a stranger to it, but gosh, can't we just think a bit. Actual scientists try so hard researching such a complicated topic just to work with existing human cells, yet there's this fff claiming to rework the whole body structure in 30 damn it years! (they really said 30)

It is something I have been asked a few times my opinion on Freedom of Form Foundation or why I do not wait for/use their technology to my own goals to return to the water.

I am hesitant to call them a scam, simply for that word carries significantly higher suggestion and I do not have a particular reason to believe they are not earnest. They do, however, appear, as an organisation, incredible and their predictions seem at best profoundly optomistic. Though their research and proposals are well outside of my own field of knowledge and research, having read some of their papers I found them generally quite uninspiring and there seems to be a -very- significant degree of difference between the technological readiness of what their written work suggests versus what their general website presents.

Certainly I should like to see them succeed; it is, however, an unlikely outcome. They are suggesting essentially to revolutionise several disciplines and bring forth many incredible technologies with what appears as a small team, with limited institutional knowledge and limited resources bound likely to a quagmire of ethics committee investigations should they ever attempt towards genuine application. As a general rule of thumb if someone is promising they are going to revolutionise multiple disciplines or fields based on not jet completed fundamental research and the technology they will develop from that research, their outcome is much less likely and credible than someone taking existing technology and reapplying them in new and interesting ways. Given what appears as quite limited resources, their claims should be taken with a more skeptical eye — though even if it were they had infinite resources success should not be guarenteed.

Even should it be Providence they succeed and do so according to their planning, consider that 30 years is a long time to wait to do things which improve your life or struggles of dysphoria. For me it is statistically unlikely I may still be alive, for many reading this they would be in their mid-late 40's or 50's. That is a very long time to wait. Additionally, if it is you are not a canid, whatever it is they develop may not be capable even to address your struggles assuming even you would be able to afford such a complex and prolonged treatment.

For myself I have pursued heavily making my own prosthetics, because it is something I can do myself with my own experience and be able to make a sort of functional suit of which I am 2 years into that process and I have a pair of flukes that is wonderful to swim with and already feels so much more cetacean than conventional commercial monofins. Prosthetics may not be permanently fixed to the body, but they can make an incredible degree of difference. There has been as well in the past few years great advancement and creativity — especially within the Chinese furry community — of various mechatronic and animating components within their costumes and suits. I expect that will only continue to grow and those activities are something -you- can learn to do and engage with to make solutions that work best for you and meet your needs.

It is a particular irony that looking at the backgrounds of the profiles listed on the FFF website; while they only have a few people focused into biology, with those few people having themselves PhDs, very many of their members and volunteers have background in electrical or computer science and mechanical engineering, that, at least as appears to me, if it was they wanted, they could likely make significant progress and contribution to development of animated prosthetics for therian and costume. Instead however, they choose, by all likelihood, to damn themselves and others in the pursuit of perfection.

You should not let the promise of what might be someday perfect from another, prevent you from chasing yourself good. It is very often that someday never comes. And even if somehow it did, and in 3 decades the technology comes to make your body however you wish, that time spent on other means to manage dysphoria or species feelings was not wasted or lost. But do not wait for others to make the world you want.

Some potential kind activities:

- playing your favorite video game or even trying out a new one! (One that we’ve been waiting for has finally come out so we’ve been playing lots of that recently)

- read that book you’ve been procrastinating starting

- go outside for a few minutes if you’ve been in your living place all day

- make a piece of art that’s just for your system or for you!

- rearrange the furniture in your room if you have one

- start that project that you’ve also been procrastinating working on (totally not targeted at my system lol)

- drink some water or other edible fluid!

- take a nice long nap if you can

I give you all a big hug/high five/head nod (depending on your level of comfort with physical touch) and I want to tell you once more that you are strong and brave people but also that you deserve rest and relaxation too! You all fantastic creations of whatever you believe made you, and I send lucky day beams to wherever you are :)

some people say "it's alright, it doesn't make your whole personality" in response of their friend explaining (warning?) to them they have DID / OSDD / are plural. While I understand where they come from, they have to acknowledge that it does make your whole personality because your personality changes from alter to alter. They're talking to a different person that handles your body too, the same as you do!

ignoring instead of acknowledging & treating respectfully your plural friends is not good or cool. You're not helping your plural friends by ignoring them & how they work.

On Misanthropy

Yeah, my first post coming back to Tumblr is going to be an angry and bitter one, but I'm in an angry and bitter mood about this so we're all just going to have to deal with it.

I'm really pissed about the way misanthropy is treated within the alterhuman community. People will take the existence of misanthropy as such a personal attack because they 1) think misanthropes hate all humans individually, and 2) can't fathom the idea that they are possibly part of the problem despite being alterhuman.

Misanthropy, how most nonhumans experience it, is extremely justified. Will live in a world where there are many more terrible, disgusting, untrustworthy humans that will harm us than there are good humans we can trust. Humanity as a whole is built on systems of hatred and oppression. Living in a human world sucks for anyone who is a target of these things. But having to live in a human world as someone who is not human? That adds an extra level of fear and frustration.

Misanthropes are not saying they are immune to being part of these issues. We are all ultimately a part of human society. Misanthropes are also not hateful towards those who demonstrate they are trustworthy. Misanthropes, specifically nonhuman misanthropes, have unfortunately just been given reason after reason to dislike humanity and distrust humans.

It's also important to point out that alterhumans, specifically those who consider themselves human, have exhibited so many of the same issues as regular humans that make nonhuman misanthropes uncomfortable. The way the community tends to treat those who are fully nonhuman is a prime example. If you call yourself human, regardless of other identities, it's not unfair that some nonhumans will feel wary around you. It isn't your fault and you will not be hated if you truly are a good person, but this is just an unfortunate reality created as the result of all the pain and suffering caused by humanity.

At the end of the day, hating misanthropes fuels the fire, especially if you are human. Taking a group that's already been given so much reason to hate and fear, and treating them like they are the monsters? It only gives them more reason to be resentful. We as a broader community of humans, alterhumans, nonhumans, and the like should be working to accept and support those who feel threatened by humanity, not causing more pain.
