Sai Ram.... happy birthday to dearest Satya Sai Baba who taught me to surrender to the consciousness allowing the divine to take care of us. In my youth, he once said that I am an artist because I was obsessed with capturing LIFE and it’s every moment in an emotional way.He refined my life path. Led by mother to Swami, I revelled in the simplest things that Swami showed and taught us.  His grace allowed my mother to be with us a bit longer. And most of all He embodied His love in my little boy’s heart that we could treasure and love for a long time. One day much later, the time came for his cousins to sing Sai’s bhajans to guide him to his rightful abode in His heaven. The bhajans softened the blow for his parents and his near ones before he was immersed in the Puttapathi river. Sai brought into our hearts and souls, Divinity’s many names and impressed on all, to practice secularism. SAI was and will always be the greatest karmic intersection we, including our extended families, were fortunate to experience. .. ITC ROYAL BENGAL - Building the visual narrative for ITC’s most prestigious offering this year, the ITC Royal Bengal, Kolkata, was not going to be easy. After an elaborate briefing by the stakeholders and their agency, the adventurous journey of transforming their vision to reality began. It took us a dedicated 3 months to design and build this picture, breaking the vision down to the details of lighting design to emphasize the architectural form, employing highly experienced technical skill sets to render reproduction at all possible scales across media platforms and finally deep think the nuances so that the overall mood blended harmoniously to narrate the desired brand vision of what ITC Royal Bengal stands for. On the day of the shoot, a record 1500 lights were used to design-light the architecture. I introduced a sharp tonal style by blending the elements of light, structure, roads, sky and bridges among others to evoke an inspirational emotion that is memorable and authentic. Mysterious areas were deliberately created so that the viewers imagination could go beyond and sense rather than see the promised potential of a city and the magnificent edifice that embodies her values. After a hectic advertising shoot in Goa, I made a quick stop at Ahmedabad to capture the swirling festive spirit and the vibrant vigor of ‘garba’, Gujarat’s principal dance form. At the gates of the ground, people streamed in droves, adorned in meticulously put together traditional garbs. At one point the music picked up and as if on cue, humanity exploded into a beautifully synchronized flurry of dance moves. Men, women and children swayed with joy in rhythm, dandiyas crackled in the air in a perfect pattern of swishing movements accompanied with fervent clapping to celebrate the very being with life. A Sabyasachi store visit is probably on every bride’s to-do list before she makes her final decision for her bridal wear. Knowing my love for art and artistic expressions, one of the brides who was to wear his bridal wear, insisted I visit his store for the sheer experience of how it was designed. Incidentally I was in Kolkata where his flagship store is. As I entered the store I was drawn into a deep experiential encounter of the great designer and his venerable art. A mild scent, soft melodious tunes, some of the most gorgeous period furniture of its kind and well-designed cinematic lighting bespoke a very powerful narrative. I lost myself at the entrance, drawn into the enigmatic ambiance of the first room. There is a story in every inch of the place. The late Mysore Maharaja, Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar had a special place in everyone’s hearts due to his humanness towards people I photographed him and his creative collections for over two and half decades.  Highness had a dedicated approach to creativity as he designed his garments, his hotels and his Palaces with meticulous fastidiousness. He was always profuse with giving due credit to his wife, Maharani Pramoda Devi Wadiyar.   There were times we would sit around his private study and he would talk of royalty and lifetimes of his predecessors. Whenever he returned from his curating trips to Europe and England, he was effusive about the wonders of an artifact or a period furniture that he had brought back.   To me he was generous, kind and affectionate.  He respected artists, and my team and I were always treated special when we stayed in his summer resort at Ooty.  Several times at our Bangalore studios and at Fernhill Palace in Ooty we would spend weeks shooting his collections with a large number of models drawn from across the country. We shot films, calendars and brochures for his Bangalore, Mysore and other outlets. I shot this mesmerising idol of Durga at the Shovabazar Rajbari of Kolkata.They completed 250 years of celebrating Durga Puja at this residence in 2006. Some of the eminent guests included Lord Clive and Warren Hastings in 1757. Apart from the common attributes that Ganesha is widely revered with -  the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and of intellect and wisdom - he is also identified with the primal sound of OM also spelled Aum , referring to the notion that he personifies the primal sound. He is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is primarily celebrated at home and in public by local community groups across Central, Western and southern states of India. The act of worshipping a clay idol and then bidding it good bye by immersing it in water is a very unique way of identifying with the cosmic cycle – of beginning and end and of new beginnings , of letting go and looking forward to the new. Every year I am drawn to this symbolic ending of a cycle, that deeply connects us to the Universal truths , leaving me in wonderment. In deeper truths there is always an intermingling of science and spirituality. Diani Jewels, led by Deepti Aradhya, resonates the vibrancy of the rich colors of the gemstones that forms a central part of her designs. Deepti translates her passion for color onto the jewelry that caresses the skin of the some of the most graceful women in the country and abroad! The colors were challenging to capture, and the deep depth of each piece called for a different set of unique tools and techniques, to create the picture.
