...Hey, it's kinda fucked up how both GO1 and GO2 emphasized how terrible it was for Gabriel (as a representative of Heaven) to tell Aziraphale to "shut your stupid mouth and die already" and then GO3 acts like it's a beautiful culmination of his character arc to... not speak up before agreeing to go to his death, right? I'm not the only one seeing this, right?

I hate it when people call this moment his “character growth.” It’s not growth, it’s a regression, for fuck’s sake. By the end of season one, he had reached a point where he was able to say directly to that commanding angel’s face that he would not take part in any war. He found a loophole and told Gabriel and Beelzebub that they could not be certain that preventing Armageddon wasn’t part of the Ineffable Plan, since it is, by definition, ineffable. In season two, he shuts down demons and archangels with a bell like they’re schoolchildren. He tells the Metatron that there is nothing left to discuss and that he has made his position perfectly clear. All of this shows that he has become less afraid of his own boldness, less afraid of standing up to Heaven, which he has feared throughout the entire story.

He always found loopholes to act according to his moral compass without putting himself, and sometimes Crowley, in danger. But he couldn’t say things to their faces because he was afraid. And the moments I described above illustrate that growth perfectly: from being afraid to speak directly to Heaven to being able to openly assert himself and his principles. That was excellent in both seasons.

Season three rolled that development back dramatically. And it looks absolutely pathetic. Crowley becomes Heaven for Aziraphale, and not in a good way at all. Aziraphale doesn’t object to Crowley’s decision, even though we clearly understand that he completely disagrees with it. He thinks it will be for the “greater good” for everyone (does that sound familiar?), and so he simply goes along with Crowley’s decision, allowing everything to die. Even though it was Crowley who helped him stop being afraid of his own boldness and curiosity (Crowley didn’t “create” that courage in Aziraphale, but that’s exactly what the ending tries to suggest, when in reality Crowley only helped him stop fearing what was already there and stop treating it as something wrong). It was with Crowley that Aziraphale was able to be himself, even if he still had to keep his distance because of Heaven’s surveillance.

Gabriel’s words come to mind about Beelzebub being his heaven. For Gabriel, a comparison like that with Heaven is not something horrific, since he has never experienced all the earthly things to which Aziraphale is so deeply attached. But for Aziraphale, Crowley was never meant to become his Heaven, because in their case it implies something entirely opposite.
