A few weeks ago I was at a board game night with some of my old classmates from various mainland European countries. They started talking about how horrible Trump's treatment of immigrants is and how they're so glad to be in Europe where nothing like that is happening right now. I asked them what they thought about the fact that their own governments were complicit in turning the Mediterranean into a mass grave of asylum seekers, and some of them legitimately didn't even know and were surprised to hear that their own governments had enacted policies that caused the deaths of thousands of asylum seekers.

Even here in Iceland, almost nobody has been talking about the fact that some of the far right populist parties have legitimately been talking about wanting to establish detainment camps to keep asylum seekers in.

Ich hasse es so wie wir als Community immer nur relevant für die Politik sind wenn wir für deren Fremdenhass instrumentalisiert werden können. Wie sollen wir vernünftig trauern wenn man gleichzeitig weiß, dass in ein paar Wochen wahrscheinlich wieder mehr Leute abgeschoben werden um uns zu "schützen"? Als wären die queere Community und Vielfalt Gegensätze. Als wäre es nicht die Union selber die den meisten Hass gegen uns schürt. Auf einen Angriff "gegen die Vielfalt und Toleranz in unserer Gesellschaft" richtet, mit Beileid zu antworten, während die eigene Regierung Programme wie Demokratie Leben! gezielt so umbaut, dass queere Vereine es schwerer haben, ihre Förderung weiter aufrecht zu erhalten. Während der Sozialstaat für Militärausgaben gekürzt wird, während es Pläne gibt Register für trans* Personen einzuführen. Das ist doch an Hohn wirklich nicht zu übertreffen.
