synopsis: Asriel Dreemurr, the kingdom's strongest mage, secretly meets up with December Holiday, the Holiday family's famous Knight. They were close childhood friends, but their paths have since diverged... now a terrible event brings them back together. They decide to spend one blissful night alone together in their secret meeting place... come morning, they may have to tear each other apart for the fate of the kingdom. but for now, they'll reminisce and frolic amongst the yellow petals.
a/n: I forgot Dess is what everyone calls her so I literally just used her full government name (December) - hope that isn't too much of a turnoff,,, we can pretend that because it's a medieval au that's her proper name,,,
// this fic was slightly inspired by heartbreak_juanito's comics on instagram!

The full moon hung low in the sky, illuminating the field of buttercups. Asriel sat down, keeping his head tilted upwards, towards the moonlight.
She had always been a little late to everything. He smiled softly. He shouldn’t have expected any different now, even when so many years had passed.
The cool breeze whispered through the grass, tickling his fur. Asriel became acutely aware of the sound of metal clicking together, approaching.
December didn’t say anything as she walked across the field, her helmet still fixed on her head. She knew he could hear her, even when she was too far to be seen.
After all, she was one of the few people who truly understood his capabilities.
“About time,” Asriel said as December sat down next to him. There was only a couple of hands’ width between them, yet it might as well have been a chasm. “Seems like some things never change.”
“I was only late by ten minutes!” December’s voice echoed inside of her knight helmet.
“Late nonetheless,” Asriel said patronizingly, then, imitating the voice of their mentor in mage school, “to build discipline is to abide by the clocks.”
For a moment, December didn’t make a sound, and Asriel thought he had overstepped a line.
Then, she threw her head back and cackled. Asriel chuckled with her, relieved.
“I can’t believe you remember that,” December said. “That was so long ago.”
“Hey, unlike a certain someone here, I actually listened.” Asriel smirked.
“Yeah, you sure studied real hard. Still haven’t learned how to have a little fun, have you?” The moonlight glints off the edge of December’s helmet.
“I have fun!” Asriel retorted. “Sometimes. You know, when I’m not caught up with all this revolt… stuff.”
December went quiet after that, and Asriel could feel the night grow a little colder. He turned his head away, looking out over the field.
Our special meeting place, December’s younger voice rang in his mind. Who knew if it would still be here when everything was over.
The way things looked now, he wasn’t sure if they’d be around to see it survive.
“Everything’s going to really change after tonight,” December said softly, echoing Asriel’s thoughts. Asriel felt her gaze shift towards him. He didn’t dare look at her.
“Azzy?”
“Yes?”
A pause.
Then, “I’m really scared.” Asriel turned to her as he realized her voice no longer reverberated within metal, now carried by the wind.
December sat before him, her helmet in her hands. Her bangs waved gently, framing her hazel eyes.
He hadn’t seen her face in a long, long time.
“Then don’t think about tomorrow.” Asriel said. “Stay with me now.”
December inhaled as though to say something, then let out her breath instead, staying silent.
“If only I was good enough to become a mage with you.” December said. “If only I…listened.”
Asriel smiled softly, if a little wryly.
“You know that wouldn’t change anything, Dess. You’d still be on the other side.”
“Well, maybe if I was more powerful, I could have stopped all this early on.”
“You think I didn’t try?”
“No, Azzy, that’s not what I meant—” December cut herself short, gripping the grass beneath between her fingers.
“Dess, you’re already as powerful as a knight could ever be.” Asriel said calmly.
“And you’re one of the best mages I know.” December looks up at him.
“And yet…here we are.”
December held Asriel’s gaze before tears welled up in her eyes, forcing her to look down at the dirt underneath her. She choked out a sob, the sound like a knife stabbed into Asriel’s heart. Carefully, he closed the distance between them, sidling up to her, as if she was a spooked deer. He didn’t how much intimacy he could be afforded after all the time they had apart.
But she didn’t move away, so he reached out, gently moving her bangs away from her face. She stilled, letting him brush away a tear.
“This night might be all we have left, Dess. So…please. Don’t think about tomorrow.” Asriel tried to keep his voice even, but it still cracked under the pressure building in his throat.
December let out a shuddering sigh.
“Okay. I won’t. I’ll forget about tomorrow. Just for tonight.” December sat up, rubbing at her eyes with her hands.
“NO DON’T DO THAT—your hands are all grassy—here, let me,” Asriel surged forward, pulling December’s wrists away from her face.
December stared at him for a moment in shock. Then, she burst out laughing again, the sound like bells ringing across the field. Asriel felt something in his chest catch fire — a burning light he hadn’t expected to feel again. He grinned giddily. When she calmed down enough to stay still, she closed her eyes long enough to let Asriel brush away what remained of her tears from the corners of her eyes.
“Hey.” December opened her eyes. Asriel realized, so focused was he on the task at hand, that their faces were incredibly close.
“Hi,” he said back. Their breaths fogged and mingled in the cold night air.
“You know, we haven’t done this since we were young and stupid.” December hummed. Asriel was acutely aware of the way her lashes flitted against her cheek.
“You think we should… do it again?” He asked, his mouth curling into a smile.
“Just for old time’s sake?” December asked back, her gaze challenging.
Asriel smiled, baring fangs. “Just for old time’s sake.”
December surged forward, catching Asriel’s mouth in hers as he wrapped his arms around her back, pulling her close. In a span of time that felt simultaneously like a moment and like a thousand years, there was nothing but December, and Asriel, together, in a field of buttercups, with the night breeze flowing through their fur and the moon shining above them. And after that infinitely short and infinitely long moment, slowly, gently, they broke away. Asriel with his arms still wrapped around December, and December still hanging onto Asriel’s neck.
And as he gazed into her eyes, Asriel thought about all the years they had that led up to this. How they had joyfully shared almost every waking moment of their childhood together, how he had stared at her longingly in their teenage years, feeling as though she would never reciprocate. As they chose their paths in life and went to mage school together, sharing lunches and complaints about their professors and mentors. The first time she had reciprocated his feelings was after they had just finished their final magical exam. And after they had come out of the empty hallways, breathless and hearts racing, they learned the news. December wasn’t fit to become a mage. Instead, she would walk a different path, putting her skills towards knighthood. At the time, Asriel had thought it fitting. She had always been better at duking it out with her fists than she was at concentrating and formulating spells. But December had been heartbroken, almost inconsolable.
It seemed, with the hindsight he had now, that only she had known the true consequence of what that outcome would mean for them.
They spent seven long years apart. Asriel had gone on to become his father’s most skilled mage, often bogged down by royal duties.
And December had gone on to become the legendary Knight of the noble Holiday family, traveling across the land and vanquishing foes and dangers alike. Never again since that day in the halls did they have time alone, just the two of them.
That was, until tonight.
December took a step away from Asriel, snapping him out of his thoughts. Then, she grabbed his hand, and ran. They frolicked deeper into the field together, laughing, kicking up buttercups, hopes, and dreams.
Everything that would be smashed into the dirt by tomorrow. For the Holiday family had started a revolt against the royal kingdom. And tomorrow was the crux, the battle that would decide the fate of the kingdom.
The two of them laid in the field, breathing heavily after their frolic. December turned her head towards Asriel, and he did likewise. Her face was contemplative, and he wondered if she was thinking the same as him.
Would she use his weaknesses against him? Would he?
Was this all one giant joke being played on them? That they, star-crossed lovers who had grown up together, knew everything about each other, would be forced to fight a battle that would destroy everything they held dear?
“Say it.” Asriel didn’t move his eyes away from her.
“What if we ran away together?”
Asriel stared at her, then huffed, looking away.
“We can’t do that,” he said.
“Yes we can! We’re the two most powerful people on this continent! Who’s going to stop us?”
“Dess, we’re not kids anymore. We ca—”
“Azzy, please, listen to me. We could do it. If we ran away, who would continue this war without us?”
Asriel opened his mouth, then closed it.
“Azzy. We could leave all this behind. All of it. With our powers combined, we could hide, run away, disappear! Nobody could track us down.”
Asriel saw as her face faltered, and he knew why. It would be hard to leave Noelle and Kris behind, with no way of contacting them.
“Dess. I think they would still continue fighting without us.” Asriel said.
“Well then let them fight! We can just leave.”
“Dess. I can’t—I can’t leave Kris and Dad behind to suffer a revolt all alone.”
December started to argue, but stopped. Her head drooped.
“I’m sorry, Dess. If it were that easy, you know I would.”
December said nothing.
“I—” Asriel took in a breath. “I love you, Dess. But I also love Kris, and my dad, and my mom and everyone else who lives in this kingdom. I can’t leave them behind to fight and get overrun.”
December looked up at him, her eyes glistening.
“I love you too, Azzy.”
They walked back to the edge of the field. December picked up her helmet and raised it above her head.
“Wait,” Asriel said. December closed her eyes as he planted a kiss on her forehead.
“There,” he breathed. “My last gift to you.”
December hugged him, and he hugged her back. Then, wordlessly, she put on her helmet, and they walked away, in separate directions.
Only December looked back for one last glance. Asriel simply moved forward, his tears falling silently as he walked.

The forces gathered around the field. The royal kingdom outnumbered the Holiday’s forces, which was a ragtag, small army made up of peasants willing to revolt, and some hired mercenaries.
Yet the only reason they stood a fighting chance was because of their Knight.
Asriel stood on the edge of the field, surveying the opposition. He didn’t see December yet.
Nobody here would know that the two of them were what caused those swathes of trampled grass looping in the field.
A heavy hand fell upon Asriel’s shoulder.
“Have you prepared your spells?” Asgore looked down at him.
“I did, yes.” Specifically, all the ones that would stun, shock, tie down their target, but not maim. Never kill.
“I do hope you are not holding back.” Asgore sighed sadly. “I know you grew up with December, but in this battle, she is our enemy. If she is able to win, then our kingdom is lost.”
“I understand, Dad.”
December still had yet to show up. The Holiday’s army looked uneasy.
“Where is she, by the way?” Asgore looked around, expecting a surprise attack. But none came.
“I don’t know.” Asriel murmured.
Time passed. There was no sign of the Knight appearing. As the sun rose and lowered in the sky, neither forces had advanced. The Holidays refused to advance without their star player, and Asgore refused to run their army of mostly peasants over.
Over the course of the day, Asriel had realized what December had done. His head was buzzing with excitement, and his chest had welled up with pride.
December, you crazy deer. You really did it, huh?
As the sun set, without the Knight anywhere in sight, Asgore sent a messenger.

Asriel didn’t think about the outcome of the Holidays later that night. He was too busy packing a knapsack and a bedroll. In the dead of night, Asriel quietly slipped out of his quarters, slid a note under Kris’s door, and stole away, leaving the castle grounds. When he made his way back to the buttercup field, he saw a figure, standing in the center of yellow, that made him run.
“Told you so,” December said, seconds before Asriel tackled her to the ground. She had traded her knight’s armor for a simple hood, her sword slung on her back.
“You’re crazy, you know that?” Asriel huffed, giddy with happiness.
“Crazy is what you gotta be if you wanna win in this world,” December chuckled. “Not discipline, and definitely not ‘abiding by the clocks.’”
“Hey, aren’t you glad I’m on time?” Asriel kissed her on the cheek. December couldn’t defend herself against that.
“Are you sure you want to come?” December asked. “I mean… I don’t blame you if you stay, y’know. You have…royal duties and Kris and all that.”
“I’m sure. My place in this world has always been next to you, Dess. I’m not going to let another seven years pass without seeing you again.” Asriel sighed, then took one final look back towards the castle in the distance.
“There’s still time to go back,” December whispered. Asriel looked back at her.
“Honestly, there’s nothing there for me anyway. I was never the princely, royal type.”
December laughed.
After a moment, they picked themselves up off the buttercups, and without another word, walked off into the forest, towards their future.
i just tried to open up my fic (which is in scrivener) through windows search bar and I started typing in "archive of our own" before I realized where I was
dessriel low-key saved me because I wrote a dessriel fic last night and it's the first fic in ages I've been able to write despite my burnout/writers block/self criticism and LIKE what I wrote. i felt like I should throw a party. well I'm at karaoke with my friends so it kinda counts
okay so for the longest time i was not crushing on any new fictional characters (in SEVERAL NEW FANDOMS/MEDIAS I GOT INTO) and I thought i was truly losing that part of me
woe be upon me
because all of a sudden
i'm practicing to main anji mito in guilty gear strive
and just
why is he hot to me all of a sudden IM LOSING MY MIND
ANJI OF ALL PEOPLE?
anji is specifically the character that when i first started playing the game i looked at him and went "he looks sooo weird"
and now it's like "oh no... he's kinda hot"
I wonder how many people understand that these are two separate things happening in different times. One is Caine coming more and more into existence and discovering the obsolete unused brain scans, and the other is Caine gaining access to the random WiFi hotspot that just appeared temporarily (as they often do) nearby. They’re both moments of self discovery which is why we cut back and forth between them, but they are undoubtedly not happening at the same time.
I worry people might think these are congruent events and be confused why Scratch suddenly appears in the circus but is never seen again afterwards. That was them showing how Caine used his powers to figure out how to use the brain scans. It was a flashback. And it’s juxtaposed to him using his powers to learn more about the outside world and about the remaining circus members.
we’re ingrained to carry this idea that bad writing and enjoyment are mutually exclusive. I have deeply loved stories, shows, movies, etc. that aren’t the most technically complex or consistent just as much (if not sometimes more) than those that are “polished”. I’m sure we all have a less polished piece of media we enjoy more than those lauded for their technicalities. keep that in mind the next time you consider your art
I’ve been a lot happier ever since I internalized this and started caring more for enjoyment than technical “perfection”. don’t get me wrong, enjoyment can come about because of or through technical cleverness, of course—but it’s far from the only avenue. we disservice ourselves in reducing our crafts to something so narrow
technicalities are just a pile of bones without the ligaments, flesh, and blood of our stories and the heart that produces their pulse
(and don’t forget, different stories, different creatures require different frames, but still have flesh and a pulse all the same)
Yeah, you know what? Reading this post reminded me that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, one of THE most popular and well known manga/anime series has. so many imperfections. There are many drastic character traits and abilities that are introduced but never mentioned ever again - sometimes conveniently unused for when they would be overpowering in a battle. There are timeline inconsistencies, sometimes solved extremely sloppily. As I was getting into JJBA one of the things I heard a lot from my friend who introduced me to it was "Oh, Araki (the creator) forgot, lol." and I think that's a very commonly known thing in the fandom. like yeah, he forgot to address this thing or fix this or whatever but ultimately nobody cares because the show is genuinely fun to watch/read and for the most part the characters have a lot of heart and we connect emotionally with them. And sure, I guess some people could say that the reason nobody looks too much into the inconsistencies is because the show is "bizarre" and people expect chaos but honestly I think my argument still stands.
anyway humans are imperfect and we're going to make imperfect things and we're going to enjoy imperfect things because nobody has ever made a perfect thing before.
