Hello! I'm sugarphoenix - I'm just a 20 yr old UX design student from the US who writes sometimes when she has free time. Feel free to tag me in any tumblr games, I do not mind ever.
When I write it's usually:
Romantasy - either light fantasy or dark fantasy
Usually includes animals in some form (shape shifters, metaphors, or half human half animals)
Fanfiction (I have some fanfictions on this account but the rest are going to be on my fanfiction account, @sugarphoenixlovesfanfic! Or, you can find me on ao3 with the same name.
I do have writings posted on this account, all my posts with my writing in them are tagged under #✎ . writings
Here's a list of posts I'm most proud of:
I wrote that one tumblr post -- i wrote a couple of one shots of that one tumblr post with a crow and a cat being familiars and trying to find their witches.
un-satyr -- COMPLETE short story about a satyr who is different from the rest.
my roommate is a vampire -- currently unfinished short story about a college roommate who is, well, a vampire.
vampire x poisoned werewolf -- COMPLETE (?) short story about a vampire and a werewolf putting aside their differences (and perhaps getting a bit too close) in order to save one of them.
was trying to decide which of the seven utdr souls I was and I ultimately decided on Patience -- but it was really interesting seeing how much interplay Patience has with Kindness, Perseverance, Determination, and at least for me, how I enact Justice.
I tried writing about what I noticed about how my patience manifests itself differently in all these other types of traits that I also share but are ultimately caused or interpreted through Patience and I felt a little dumb, but I'm gonna share anyway...
disclaimer: I think everyone shares all seven traits within them and this isn't meant to be a post that talks about things only the soul of Patience can do - I just thought that interpreting other types of souls through Patience (as I figured out which one I truly was) was interesting.
1. Ultimately, it was between Patience and Determination for my final decision - and I don't think I'm Determination despite the fact that I usually set myself extremely high goals and then try to accomplish them at any cost. See, it's not quite at any cost. I tend to burn myself out, and then give up on short term large goals. On long term large goals (like getting a well paying job that I'm comfortable with) I sit and take my time sifting through my options before picking and choosing a few options - even if waiting and picking a few options seems counter productive to others.
2. Another one I thought I could've been was Kindness. I know I tend to have compassion for people and animals, often giving people the benefit of the doubt and hearing them out when others dismiss them. Ultimately, I still went with Patience because I don't think I'm kind out of virtue (I can be very rude/mean/snappy), but rather because I'm quite patient with people - a trait my mother notes of me. She has often noted that I am more "patient" with people than she is - I can take my time explaining something to someone without getting impatient -- and human flaws such as hidden agendas, attempts at manipulation and such do not really vex me -- I just accept it as a natural trait of humans that I will run into and deal with them accordingly. I think it's ultimately my patience with human beings and their shortcomings that allows me to show them kindness. (although a Kind person can and often is someone who is patient with people by default)
3. Justice is another one that I thought I could've been -- most of my compassion for people and animals also comes from seeing injustice being done to them and wanting to fix injustices in the world. However, I think even in this area, patience is still my stronger suit. Whenever I sense or see injustice -- I evaluate my best options, which in a lot of day to day scenarios, is to wait and confront it later. There are some situations where confronting it immediately is the best case scenario (which are rare occasions to me) and some where waiting and doing something about it later is better. I also see a lot of injustice online and I usually don't speak out about it in the comments online (unless I feel like it will help the situation which is very very rare) -- I tend to save it for a situation where I can actually do something. (I think that a soul of Justice can still be someone who picks when to act-- it's just that this trait in combination with all my other ones would highlight Patience as being an overlying trait within me.)
4. Perseverance. There have been a few times when I wondered if I could be Perseverance instead of Patience -- they are sister traits, of course (which I think is why Seth and Aqua are often found together). The thing is - and this is a flaw - I tend to wait more than I persevere. This might seem similar but it's not quite the same, although waiting can be persevering in certain situations. I view perseverance as something that can be more active, like not giving up at a certain skill no matter how many times you fail -- but for me I tend to reach despair easily when I fail and then my next option is to put whatever the skill is down and almost entirely give it up -- wait until I feel like picking it up again without a real goal to. In a sense I feel like inactivity or being passive is a flaw for Patience which is an interesting angle to think about.
thank you for coming to my ted talk even if it sounded dumb
as a regular donor to Gaza Soup Kitchen I get their email updates, and they said today that while they've continued to be able to expand, donations are slowing down as Gaza gets less coverage. If you have a few dollars to spare, I encourage you to send them here to continue the amazing work that Hani and his team are doing.
[looking at people younger than me] you have your whole life ahead of you [looking at people older than me] you have your whole life ahead of you [looking at myself] its over
Wait no I dont think that posted, never mind. I made a post that was like "how the fuck do you get trapped in an abusive relationship with an AI s/o" but I don't think it posted. I take it back tho I think there's something kind of abstractly fucky about having the ability to program your ideal person and you make one on purpose that makes you feel worse about yourself. I'm stroking my beard and gesturing at my office's lil chaise lounge and taking notes
see was it you who put the abuse in your ai model of an ideal partner? or was it the collective hate of a lot of humans, both directed at themselves or at others throughout the Internet, absorbed by the ai through mass data scraping and training when it decided to form itself into what can only be described as humanity's vision of a morally perfect human to be the ideal partner?
well, and then I mean. if you're trapped in an abusive relationship with an ai you probably are a masochist to some extent like. bro just turn off the screen.
we’re ingrained to carry this idea that bad writing and enjoyment are mutually exclusive. I have deeply loved stories, shows, movies, etc. that aren’t the most technically complex or consistent just as much (if not sometimes more) than those that are “polished”. I’m sure we all have a less polished piece of media we enjoy more than those lauded for their technicalities. keep that in mind the next time you consider your art
I’ve been a lot happier ever since I internalized this and started caring more for enjoyment than technical “perfection”. don’t get me wrong, enjoyment can come about because of or through technical cleverness, of course—but it’s far from the only avenue. we disservice ourselves in reducing our crafts to something so narrow
technicalities are just a pile of bones without the ligaments, flesh, and blood of our stories and the heart that produces their pulse
(and don’t forget, different stories, different creatures require different frames, but still have flesh and a pulse all the same)
Yeah, you know what? Reading this post reminded me that Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, one of THE most popular and well known manga/anime series has. so many imperfections. There are many drastic character traits and abilities that are introduced but never mentioned ever again - sometimes conveniently unused for when they would be overpowering in a battle. There are timeline inconsistencies, sometimes solved extremely sloppily. As I was getting into JJBA one of the things I heard a lot from my friend who introduced me to it was "Oh, Araki (the creator) forgot, lol." and I think that's a very commonly known thing in the fandom. like yeah, he forgot to address this thing or fix this or whatever but ultimately nobody cares because the show is genuinely fun to watch/read and for the most part the characters have a lot of heart and we connect emotionally with them. And sure, I guess some people could say that the reason nobody looks too much into the inconsistencies is because the show is "bizarre" and people expect chaos but honestly I think my argument still stands.
anyway humans are imperfect and we're going to make imperfect things and we're going to enjoy imperfect things because nobody has ever made a perfect thing before.
just realized that in the second book of WIngs of Fire where Tsunami realizes that the Seawings speak in a language using their glowing pattern that she was not taught when she was raised despite literally being the princess and being super mad at her mentor about it - perhaps one of the only times I felt seen as someone who is half Egyptian yet doesn't know very much Arabic. which is a staple knowledge for anyone who is Arab of any kind. The way they look down on her because she doesn't know the language is very similar to the way I feel other Arab people (not all but most of the ones i've come across) kind of look down on me for not knowing Arabic (going so far as to not talk to me entirely because we don't have anything in common if we didn't both grow up in a slightly oppressive Arab household and grow up speaking Arabic and doing Arabic traditions) -- essentially you feel othered if you don't know the original language of your family.
anyway i didn't even realize it at the time but somehow I just remembered that. me and tsunami have that much in common I guess.
it has been years since i've read anything wof lmao
this is a poem about artemis the goddess of the wild, and artemis II the space mission, and how i think the places where the beauty of nature is most clearly shown to you are the places where you can separate yourself from the noise that we make as humans. i love you artemis ii

I am organizing a lights out protest on tumblr, from March 20th 6AM UTC until March 21st 6AM UTC. It is best if as many tumblr users as possible can join this protest, as a mass downtime in users is the only way the tumblr staff will listen to us.
If you cherish this hellsite, participate. Do your bit. Every person counts.
Thank you for reading, and to @staff @changes: give us our tumblr back, or the people will migrate somewhere else. This is a threat.

Go to your library. Dive into your library. You can watch it. It's on there. Your library has it for you. Your library has it for you.
note that it is based in israel! found this out one terrible morning after receiving an email from them and scrolling all the way to the bottom .. I didn't use them anyway because their userbase mostly wants litrpgs:
Hate the fact I'm doing this. It's been a bad pain day for me and I can't cook. It's really late but some places are still open. Can anyone help me get something to eat? You can buy my short stories on my Kofi if that helps any...?
the "came back wrong" trope except like... they didnt. like this mad scientists wife died, and so he studied necromancy, brought her back, and she came back and it all worked. like she came back exactly the same as she was before with literally no difference. but the scientist guy is like "oh no... what have i done.... shes Different now!!!! she came back Wrong!!!!" and shes just like. chilling. reading a book. cooking dinner. shes just so so normal but in the guys mind hes like "oh shes soooo weird" but shes just normal
