Thoughts While Sewing

I’ve realised something while I was tailoring a skirt I bought (it was too long), about a conversation I had in university a year ago (feminist teacher) about femininity and masculinity as she asked 

“why isn’t femininity regarded as important in companies?” 

(She used this table as a point)

-- and in the short sense she came to the conclusion that “it isn’t respected in the modern society.”

But it was. 

Think about before the 1960s and the technological advancement of post war, women did sew, and themselves decided the fashion advances (and of course men did too - sailors, male tailors and soldiers).

Single women did in fact earn their own wages in things like needlework or things that didn’t require a lot of work or time, in fact before the introduction of clothing factories, most clothes (that weren’t extraordinary complicated to which you needed to study in it’s craft and for the people that weren’t aristocratic, mostly didn’t have the time to waste all days learning a trade, when there was food to work for, family to look after etc etc) were made at home by both women and children. 

With the advent of the sewing machine, came more variety in home fashion as it was faster to make and easier to stitch. 

However I’ve noticed, like many things regarded as feminine and of a crafting nature i.e. the cooking industry, Private tutors (previously governess), Pottery, brewery (water was not considered safe), medicine (17th century housewives were expected to have at least some knowledge in it as to treat family illnesses) have become a corporate or a business thing. 

But my question is: why?

(And no this isn’t a knock on Capitalism before Marxists come, as in 1920s at least in my country it was a capitalist nation and these trades were still very much regarded as favourable in women's circles-- if anything you could say it is corporatism, but I don’t know if that fully answers it)

It is in my view, just a reversal of the inherently African savage man which was rightly wrong as no race determines behaviour or savagery, it is culture and no people of the same race holds the same culture, but we ALL hold the same human nature. 

The King of Dahomey (of Benin (West Africa) to which they are going to make a movie about called the Woman-King (funny enough I doubt they will touch on the fact that it was Ghezo who said this and his female warriors who were kept happy with alcohol, tobacco and slaves around 50:1 ratio for each female warrior)) told the British when they came to stop it that:

“the slave trade has been the ruling principle of my people. It is the source of their glory and wealth. Their songs celebrate their victories and the mother lulls the child to sleep with notes of triumph over an enemy reduced to slavery.”

To which your summary could also succinctly be attributed to this as the culture of Benin at the time was in fact “expand the empire” by enslaving the enemy; “kill the savage” as the enemy is inferior to my peoples and by that right and when all is said and done, when the husband (or sister seeing as Ghezo had his own class of female warriors) has come home from raiding and capturing slaves, he “goes home to kiss the wife on the lips” as she tells the children tales of a savage man defeated and that their god Mawu-Lisa had given them god-given rights over the savage as they were the superior tribe.

Anon's Point: America's tradition is white-supremacist in it's foundation

You have stated that traditionalism in US American leftists view is white-supremacist/fascist because they or you (I am assuming) view it as a fact that America in it’s foundation and creation is white-supremacist and fascist. This you have stated is because of “the culture of the US in the 19th century” of which the strategy of homesteading “was a strategy for taking land […] by god-given right” to which you concretely sum up in your last sentence as Tradition in America is “expand the empire, kill the savages, go home and kiss your wife on the lips”

I hope I have summed up your view honestly and fairly. I have many questions, and I hope I don’t come off as too non-American, to which I am not one, but it is a funny thing for Americans (not all of course) to view themselves as the foundation of human existence when in all due respects it is a very different kind of country to all others.

 Though I fundamentally disagree with your rather Hobbesian view of man (on that is a savage whose life is nasty, brutish and short) to some extent, it is amusing to me that your implication is that “whites” (also implied Christians to which yes society and countries in general in the past where very religious fundamentally as a historical fact) to which in non-American dialect is Europeans (and I am assuming you are referring to Western as Eastern European is Orthodox and not usually included in the American view of “whites” though strangely neither is Italian which is Western Europe or the Irish) have somehow a unique human nature not awarded to rest of humanity.

You had taken the time to write a long response so I saw it well to respond in kind to your answer with a detailed reflection of your answer in kind. (So apologies in advance, though you might never read this, for the long and detailed response)

Though I am a bit despondent that you seem to have written an ideological response rather than a personal one, I will in fact nevertheless treat it as if I am talking to you personally and not the ideology I can read from any academic paper. 

If you would take care, I will reflect upon each step by step, though I do not doubt you will neither agree with nor like my reflections, I hope with good will, you will take them in a matter of good faith.

hey there! you asked in a post why US americans view tradwifery/traditionalism as white supremacist/fascist. and also homesteading/cottagecore i think was implied as part of the question. the answer is because america is traditionally white supremacist and fascist. i’m referring here to the culture of the US in the 19th century, which a lot of 20th century conservatives & traditionalists longed for, esp since women got the vote early in the 20th century. with the historical traditions of the US in mind, lot of non-conservative americans just prefer the term “homemaking” over tradwifery. tangentially, “homemaker” as a term is also more inclusive than “stay-at-home wife” or “tradwife” (if implying stay-at-home) bc a lot of wives cant afford to be full-time stay-at-home wives but still want to prioritize their homemaking responsibilities, since it’s hard for one person’s income to support a family in the US. also some non-conservative americans are still into cottagecore bc the perspective that the term “cottagecore” itself is bad is actually not that widely accepted. thats mostly just a tumblr thing. but the term “homesteading” itself is fraught as a concept in the U.S. because of just how the 19th century went overall for native americans. in the US, homesteading was a strategy for taking land that was considered rightfully belonging to the whites, despite a pre-existing native presence. the government & other cultural institutions promoted this belief that the land was destined to belong to white americans, by god-given right, intertwining the ideas of homesteading and genocide into manifest destiny. the government subsidized western expansion via homesteading in newly conquered territories by distributing land deeds and payment to citizens who agreed to move west. americans have this perspective on traditionalism and homesteading as white supremacist because thats what tradition is in america 🤷‍♀️ expand the empire, kill the savages, go home and kiss your wife on the lips

I doubt you would be thrilled to read what will become an entire 5,000 word essay as I am already on 2132 words without even coming to the issue of trad/homemaking/homesteading.

So, would you prefer I give the whole thing and inevitably not read it? Or I could issue it in parts (though excuse my disjointed and digressing writing style) for easier consumption.

Though unfortunately, it is more a historical essay than a direct response.

I am thinking to maybe theme it in parts and give it off in general and overtime, though I have written it as if I am talking to you.

Though maybe you have just written this as a lecture and not wanting a response. I am too much of a history enthusiast to refuse a response unfortunately.

I've never been a fan of bad faith reinterpretations of fairy tales, especially ones which flatten the originals into "princesses is saved by a prince and nothing else", to then go #girlboss. The princess can save herself because she's a strong female character! (Implying if you're in a bad situation, it's because you're not strong enough to get out)
