“Why thank you. The shoes are definitely horrible - whoever invented heels seriously needs to go back in time. They look cute, but once you put them on - no thank you. I am very ready to slip back into my pajamas and remain in bed for at least a full day. Not until after midnight though.”

Emmeline had been averse to the whole masquerade thing from the start. Rather large, extensive gathering? No, thank you. Formal wear with required mask that was more of a pain to deal with than the people? Even more to dislike. Add to it that the mask had to stay in place until midnight, and Emmeline was just done with the evening, less than an hour in. She’d made a conscious decision to stand off to one side, avoiding dancing when at all possible - though Mary would likely not allow her to forego it the entire night, save for when she needed to refresh her drink. She had a fairly common habit of babysitting her drinks - one could easily last an hour if she drank slow enough. As she turned away from the refreshment table, she collided with another person, causing the drink to spill and Emmeline to curse.  ❝Fucking Merlin.❞ Her immediate instinct was to reach for her wand, before remembering it had been left in her dormitory. ❝Masks you can’t take off, no magic, wet dress. Bloody perfect.❞

“I’ve managed to go all night without so much as ripping my dress, and I’m honesty very proud of myself. My mask, however, is driving me insane - if I make it to midnight with this thing, I’ll reward myself with so many lemon cakes. It’s only fair.”
