Behind White Eyes//Sujay & Barnabas
In retrospect, Barnabas should’ve known. Sujay had entered in late, and where else would they have gone that would’ve been open? A fast-food joint? No, no, Sujay’s sense of humor was much more grand than that, Barnabas thought as a woman moved to grasp at his arm, but stopped short–thanks to his own abilities. “Tsk, tsk,” he said to her, shaking his finger, instead motioning for him to follow her. Barnabas knew that there was more than Sujay was letting on, so he played along with the joke. They were best friends, after all.
Soon enough, they were in a small alcove, curtains drawn around the two men with a promise of someone visiting soon to take care of them. “Did you like that one?” He asked, genuinely curious. “She was rather beautiful, really, though I did not care for all the jewelry, though I’m sure that you did.” He looked at his friend, relaxing fully onto the rounded couch–he made a note to shower as soon as he returned home.
Rarely were there instances where Sujay wished he could see; but seeing Barnabas’s facial reactions would seem worth it. “Easy on the eyes, wasn’t she?” Sujay could tease Barnabas all night, and he really wanted to as well. But the time has passed and and it was time for the curtains to drop.
“I am one for accessories, this is true.” If the rings he constantly wore were any indication of that. “But really this night out, is not about me, my friend. It is about you.” He took the opportunity of when they were alone, for the few moments they would be as he spoke barely above a whisper. “I do like you Barnabas, so you can imagine I enjoy hearing about how you are doing.” His hand felt empty, and he wished he had some wine in hand before getting comfortable. “But, perhaps some of the things I’ve heard have not been so good.”

“Oh,” quickly, everything caught up with her–his glasses, the color of his eyes, and she blushed a cherry red, but it did not matter as she also went invisible at the moment as well. Petunia swallowed thickly, and tried not to let her eyes water too much at the frustration of everything around her, of becoming separated from the only friend she’d made and being shipped off to get more ‘help.’ What could anyone else possibly do for her that wasn’t locking her away once more? “I didn’t know, I’m–” she took a breath, shaking her head and slowing her thoughts and her breathing and her everything. Just calm down, Tunie, she thought of Alex saying the words, and did just that.
“I,” she started, trying to get back to reality, get back to being real, “not anymore,” Petunia whispered, swallowing and looking up to the man. She caught sight of a nameplate, and saw the words ‘Headmaster Acharya.’ Alright, she was at a school, then? “I–you’re–” He was blind, Petunia had realised before, only finally beginning to process it. Petunia cleared her throat, and thought of earlier education and etiquette. “How do you do?”
Sujay held his chin in his hand, focusing on the girl, trying to see if there is any slight shifts in the air, in the ground, the blood iron content, anything to see if he could sense when she changed. Nothing-- there was nothing, save for maybe a slight smell of salt? This was still quite hilarious in retrospect, and Sujay did have to keep himself from laughing, as he would be perfectly visible in doing so. He had to remain professional, not matter how amusing the situation was to him. “That is alright, I’m afraid we were both thrown for a bit of a loop there.”
“I’m doing fantastic-- Headmaster Acharya,” He spoke, realizing he hadn’t properly introduced himself. “Mind my manners, I got a bit excited. I apologize for that. How are you doing today, Petunia?” The sound of her voice made her seem, nervous to say. While Sujay usually enjoyed other people’s nervousness, it was never the case at his- Barnabas’s school. It was the only time where he truly tried to provide the utmost comfort for everyone.
“Let me know if there’s anything I can get you, I want you to be comfortable before we get started.” Perhaps he was being courteous, or perhaps he was delaying his Huxley schpeal. Maybe a little bit of both. While the power of invisibility sounded like a very useful and interesting, power, but this could be said about any ability- it all depended on who wielded it.

She didn’t know why she was where she was, she only knew that apparently it was a safe place for her. It felt like a sort of trap, and the whole ambiance of the building and its surroundings only furthered that thought–as it all gave her the vibe of a place she’d long-since abandoned, trying to escape from something that could never have been called a real life.
The sound of footsteps on a wooden floor caught her attention and she looked up to the door, eager (and also, at the same time, scared) to see who would walk out and greet her–not that the could really see her now, could they? “Y-ye–” she answered automatically, forgetting her powers and her abilities and instead feeling like a normal child being called in for an appointment. “How–” she stood up, following the man–how had he seen her? “Are–” the man kept talking, and though he sounded at least polite, she felt like she wasn’t able to get any word in.
Finally, it was silent. She had walked into the office, was standing before his desk, and quiet as a mouse. She told herself to breathe, and finally spoke. “You-you can see me?” Her heart rate slowed a little, as she felt that there was no real threat coming from this man. Gradually, she began to be visible once more, starting from her finger tips up. “I–you–” she sat down, and took a breath.
The girl sounded less timid by the minute, which was good, but she still barely spoke above a whisper. Sujay knit his brows together at the question, and how incredibly blunt it was. Sujay didn’t usually make an effort in hiding his blindness, but when it came to new company, he was at the very least subtle about it. Perhaps he was losing his touch- or perhaps he should remember everything found in the report.
“Why no, not at all, Petunia.” A smile played at his lips, the whole notion becoming more humorous to him. He waited until she sat down before speaking again. “Not even if you wanted me to.” He shrugged, taking off his dark glasses and flicking his eyes in her direction, “Tell me, you are- invisible at this very moment?” He almost sounded giddy, asking the question, thought he would have to tell Barnabas about the ridiculousness on the whole encounter.

[ sighs and steps more inwardly, sitting before the Headmaster’s desk ] I–everything is fine. I only have some concerns… About my classmates and their attitudes towards schooling and, well, towards… [ pauses ] me.
These classmates are troubling you? [He frowns] Tell me, are you willing to say which of your classmates? And what their ah..... attitude towards you?

Of course. Truly, Barnabas needed to compromise his ideals and begin reading his friend’s mind, because this was too much. Barnabas’ expression was one that was neutral, but anyone that knew him well enough knew that there was an annoyance within him. “Really?” Barnabas said in a deadpan tone, “All the act, for this.” He sighed and stepped out of the car, walking over to the passenger side and helping Sujay out.
“I think we need to hire someone to tell you that you aren’t funny every time that you try to be,” Barnabas told him. Once more, he sighed, and lead him and Sujay into the building–which outside was all lights and neon and very obviously a strip club. Ridiculous. “Again, why?” He asked, mainly to himself.
Sujay was having quite a great day, he was spending some quality time with his good friend, Barnabas, and was experiencing one of the funnier moments in his life, this he was sure. Barnabas had gone quiet, and Sujay had leaned in, smile already in his face before laughing at Barnabas’s dead tone. “Ahh, you see, the best thing about humor, is that I am the only one who has to find it funny.” He stroked his chins, as if he were in thought, “Turns out, I do!” he chuckled again. Truly, when you lived as long as Sujay has, you learn to make your own fun.
Sujay, practically dragging Barnabas as he walked inside, was still holding back laughter before calming himself down and turning to Barnabas. “This will be fun, as I said before.” It felt bery different upon walking in, especially with the amount of people he felt in the room. Not quite the atmosphere he wanted, perhaps something more personal. He quickly signaled for someone to come over, luckily they were wearing quite the amount of jewelry, whispering and giving all the payment necessary. “This will be a special treat,” he said before being the both of them were led elsewhere.

Arriving had been the more difficult part, as Fortuna had never really travelled anywhere. She was surprised at how easy it was after that, after one abandoned their upbringing and morals in order to survive. Life with Alex hadn’t been terrible, but Fortuna was a very timid soul and stealing while invisible wasn’t exactly the best thing for her conscience. But, this was neither here nor there. This was only one thought of many that ran through her head as she was made to approach the daunting office of the already terrifying school environment.
There was a very beautiful aspect to it, but as Fortuna had known all her life, that usually meant that there were things to hide. She looked down at her hands and saw them disappearing and reappearing again and again, something that often happened when she was anxious. Breathe, she told herself, her hand rising to twirl and pull at a lock of hair. Breathe and enter.
But, she couldn’t. Fortuna couldn’t move and felt as if she couldn’t breathe, so she just stood. Her hand shook and her skin began to fade away into nothing as the invisibility took over her body in her anxious state. “No, no, please no,” she whispered softly to herself, backing up and sitting at one of the couches outside of the office. “Come back,” she murmured, pulling at her skin, her eyes beginning to water in panic.
Ever skillful, his agents had brought the person in question quite some time ago, all Sujay had to do was ask a few question, go through a few tests, and hopefully this draftee wouldn’t be too much trouble- or die. Sujay was almost sad he didn’t have to go anywhere for this process, but if it made things easier, it made things easier.
He had sensed someone coming close to his office, and assumed it to be her- but she seemed to spend a lot of time simply standing there- and Sujay was never much for sitting and waiting. It wasn’t until she had move did Sujay move from his desk, sighing all the while.
He opened the door, turning his face in her direction greeting the person in front of him with a smile. “Fortuna, yes?” he did not wait long for a response, “Please, come on in.” He waited at the door for a moment, walking back to his desk the moment she stood up. He spoke again once they were both in the room. “You can go ahead and make yourself comfortable if you’d like. Let me know if there is anything else I can get you.” He sat down, flicking his finger and closing the door.

Keep her. Right. Barnabas rolled his eyes and lead Sujay into the elevator. “I guess I will…” He dead panned, tossing Sujay a smirk that he couldn’t see. “Living proof, huh? I’m not too sure that that can be spoken as a fact, Sujay. Opinion. Very… Ah… Far-fetched opinion.” He let out a bit of a deep laugh and shook his head as the elevator beeped with every passing floor.
“That’s quite alright, my old friend. I think I would enjoy driving.” Sujay shot the keys over to him and Barnabas admired the use of his powers–rather useful, no? He smiled to himself, and slid into the car, waiting for his friend. “Directions?”
Sujay offered Barnabas a shrug before flinging his keys over. “Please, enjoy yourself.” He easily got into the passenger seat of his car, taking comfort in the more relaxing role of getting to their destination.destination. Sujay made sure not to give directions too late or too early, lord knows how annoying that could be. “Make a left here. Take your next right..” this continued until Sujay finally said “Stop.”
A smile broke across his face, “I think we can walk from here, yes? Come.” He exited the car, waiting for Barnabas to come around to his side and immediately putting his hand on his arm. “I do think you will find this mini-vacation, to be quite worth i-” he stopped in the middle of his tracks, looking towards there destination. “Ah, here we are.”

“For quite a while?” He echoed, knowing that there was definitely more than what met the eye in what Sujay was saying. They walked together quietly, arriving at the elevator and leaving the floor. Eventually, they passed the secretary and waved at her, bidding her farewell. “You can leave early,” Barnabas told her, smiling at the joyous expression on her face. “Go have fun.”
He let out a breath after she had gone, using the second elevator after her. “Now it’ll just be you and I here–is this place driving-distance?” He asked, eyebrows arched, though Sujay could not see them. “Surprises aren’t exactly something I adore.”
He nodded towards Allison’s direction as she left, giving her a cordial smile. Her elevator door closed before Sujay spoke up again, “Allison is very lovely, she was very cordial, make sure you keep her.” Their elevator came“You always had such good taste in people, Barnabas- speaking as living proof of course.”
The sound of his cane hitting the ground made a distinctively different noise as they found their way outside. “I know, that’s why you must have them” Sujay couldn’t help but laugh at Barnabas’ response, “It is fairly close by, however if you prefer I drive, then who am I to deny you?”

“An errand?” Barnabas repeated, asking once more. He didn’t really want him to clarify, he merely wanted to show his sarcasm, because when Sujay said such things–it was never what he truly meant. But, Sujay was his friend, and he let him lie. It would be simple to know, but there was no reason to. Barnabas held respect for the man, and there was such a thing as privacy between the two friends.
“Fine,” he answered finally, “I will… Ah, unchain myself from this desk, and go with you, on an errand.” Barnabas smirked and stood up, extending an arm for Sujay to take so that Barnabas could lead the way out–more out of formalities than any true need for help, of course. “Come along, then, my friend. Tell me what these errands are as we walk.”
Sujay was very happy to hear Barnabas’ answer, and it was very apparent on his face. “Wonderful! I am very pleased to hear this Barnabas, you will make this errand, “ he laced his voice with the same sarcastic tone Barnabas was using, “much easier, this I know.”
He stood up with the help of his aid, putting his hand on Barnabas’ arm, “There is a place I have been meaning to visit for a while now, it has been on my to do list for quite a while you might say.” They headed towards the exit, which happened to be the very elevator Sujay came from, ah another comfortable ride. He stood facing forward, “Worry not, I will not keep you too long “

“I usually am very busy, and though I do make notes to call,” Barnabas said, “but I am very sorry.” The response was automatic, and he said it with a laugh. “And, even if I did send you a letter–should there be sensitive information within it, how would you read it?” He let out another laugh and shook his head. “Phone calls, I think, would work best. Or, well…” He tapped his temple.
“Either way,” he began once more, “is there a reason for your visit?” Barnabas’ voice took on a more somber tone. “Is everything alright, my friend?” He leant forwards in his chair, allowing Sujay the privacy of his own mind, and letting him speak what was on it if he felt the need to.
The tone of his voice let Sujay know that he truly did not know the reaso of hs visit, perhaps he hadn’t felt the need to inquire for himself. Sujay frowned sincerely, “What reason do I need to visit you, Barnabas?” that he would nee for something serious to happen just to visit.
“Alright, Barney, perhaps I am in need of a friend, no?” he uncrossed his legs, placing both hands on the top of his cane and leaning forward. “Perhaps I need you to simply have a good time.” He licked his lips as he spoke, “Tell me, do you care to free yourself from your desk for a bit? Go on a little errand with me?” He grinned, “I understand you are impossibly busy, but please, I insist.”

Barnabas was a quiet soul who preferred silence over other things. Sujay was a dose of rowdiness that Barnabas was never really ready for, but always appreciated in the end. He smiled at the jibe that was made, and shook his head as he let out a small huff of a laugh. After pinching the bridge of his nose, he rolled his eyes, and leant against his desk.
“You know, I think you’re getting pretty close to pushing a century. Do you think those jokes will stop any time soon, mm?” He stood again and walked over to the right side of his desk and took his normal seat. “It’s been about two years. And won’t you stop calling me Barney, I don’t know how many times I’ve repeated it…”
Sujay gasped, “Is it apparent,” he touched his face in mock horror “You know I don’t do wrinkles.” He turn his head towards Barnabas, following his footsteps as he walked. “Too many, surely,” he quirked up his eyebrows, “I hope I was not supposed to be keeping count, Bar-na-bas” he licked his lips and sneered, ‘It’s just not the same, you see?” he shook his head. “Surely you have to, we can’t both be blind.” Mm, looks like the jokes weren’t going to stop.
“What have you been up to? Please I want updates since you never seem to call, you don’t even send letters, Barnabas.” He paused for a moment, “Do you?” Not that Sujay would be all that responsive if Barnabas did try to contact him, he preferred face to face interactions, and even then he would rather choose the time and place himself, such as right now.
