Saw a terrible take and had to rant. Shane does not CHOOSE to go to Ottawa. Shane is FORCED out of the Voyageurs/Metros by a team he'd built and won three Cups with, who he had sacrificed for and dedicated himself to, because they couldn't accept him and his relationship or trust him as the person he had always been. So no, Shane going to Ottawa for (probably) less pay, no leadership position, and as the captain's husband, is NOT his "reward" for "learning that life is more than hockey". It is the result he always feared would come from being outed and open.

Imagine you're scared of all the terrible things that will happen to you and your boyfriend if you come out as gay and together and then you're accidentally outed against your will by your stupid best friend and every terrible thing you were afraid of happening to you happens because the author thinks you're bad and selfish and need to be punished. And nothing bad happens to your boyfriend after the outing because he's the author's special little boy and apparently Russia's government just doesn't care about their #1 world-famous athlete permanently tarnishing their anti-queer reputation by sucking Western hockey legend dick on the daily. And THEN everyone you know basically ignores the fact you were RIGHT and you DID LOSE EVERYTHING because it all turned out okay in the end right?? Let me be clear. If you are writing a queer romance and the main characters are famous in any sense and they are in a homophobic space and you have an outing plot point?

You need to treat that like the genuine violation it is. You need to treat it as dangerous and give it the narrative space it deserves in a queer story. Especially. Especially if that outing has explicit negative impact on your characters! You need to interact with that you cannot wave it away your HEA cannot be 'we're better off after being outed'.

ilya at the end of tlg should do what the montréal canadiens are doing irl—taking a lower salary and encouraging his teammates to all take a lower salary to share the cap space, so they could have a stronger team together, so that shane hollander, the generational talent who has brought montréal three stanley cups, could join a team that respects his worth and feel happy there.

A part of this fandom apparently refuses to acknowledge that it does not really make sense for Ilya to no longer fear Russia’s repercussions he would face in TLG. @gingeralevodka and @lesbianroselandry pointed out how the seeds of Ilya’s fears were sown in 2013-2014 - when Russia first introduced their anti-lgbtq laws… I would argue that there is another reason, albeit not as directly impacting Ilya as the anti-lgbt legislature, as to why he would want to abandon Russia and get a different passport as he says.

As already mentioned, Ilya fears going back to Russia around the time of the Olympics - the 2014 Sochi Olympics were eventful ones when it comes to Russia and scandals & heinous crimes that came to light there/around that time.

At the tail end of the Olympics, Russia started it’s military operation that ended in the annexation of Crimea. Its one of the major contributors to the worsening of international relations between Russia and the US. What happened in 2014 was very much one of the reasons why the relations between the US and Russia got so bad that Ilya wanted a different passport (not to mention the shitshow of 2017 and Trump).

One thing people need to remember is that professional athletes, especially at Ilya’s level of fame (major NHL star, one of the best players in the world, captain of the national team), are part of the countries soft power and patriotic propaganda.

The Ilya who had ties in Russia and regularly returned up until 2017 could not really stray from his careful path in fears of persecution. However bad his relationship with his family was, any of his actions would trickle down to his family and would endanger them and Ilya would never put them in danger.

Him participating in pride night could be seen as promoting the lgbtq “idiology” and land him in jail upon his return to Russia. (The first pride night held by the NHL was in 2011 and a lot of Russian players refused to participate throughout the years - especially ones that had significant ties to Russia and some bc they very vocally support Russia)

All this is still very much relevant in 2017 when Ilya decides to cut ties with Russia, seeing as the attitudes inside Russia are getting worse and his safety is not guaranteed.

Ilya is also an immigrant and relies on a visa - that much is clear from their conversations at the cottage where they first start planning their future.

Shane and Ilya have no guarantee that they would be able to continue playing in the league if their relationship became public and their decision to continue hiding while taking steps to assure Ilya’s safety are completely rational and mutually affirmed!

During TLG, Ilya is still on a visa and that is still tied to his job which he can possibly lose - this threat has not disappeared just because Ilya is now in Canada. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Ilya does not even have PR nor has he taken any steps towards obtaining PR in Canada so he has no ties to Canada other than his job (his NHL one and his charity), as far as the public is concerned.

If Ilya’s queerness became public knowledge and he lost his job, ergo his visa, he could possibly seek asylum in Canada as a queer Russian citizen (especially a public figure like him which would land him in jail in Russia).

As a way to keep Ilya in Russia, they could also go the marriage route but that also takes time. Not to mention that they would face public backlash for their relationship from bigoted hockey fans and their relationship would be questioned by the authorities - they would have to provide proof of prior relationship - which we know there is not enough of, seeing as they keep deleting conversations and pictures they have of each other.. it would be hard to provide hard proof and not just anecdotal one.

So Russia would still very much be a thing Ilya has to keep in mind until he has that Canadian passport - to pretend that it isn’t is incredibly ignorant.

As @gingeralevodka mentioned in their very patient responses - even if Ilya is a millionaire and a queer man who could technically seek asylum, Russia could still manufacture crimes that would lead to an international warrant and could lead to the potential extradition.

Ilya is in no way, shape or form safe from Russia in TLG. More so when you take into account what has been happening in Russia in the early 2020s that lead to Russia’s expansion of the anti lgbtq laws to include all age groups, not just the propaganda of non traditional relationships towards minors.. (not to mention the ever increasing fear of a Russian invasion of Ukraine which ended up happening mere months after Shane and Ilya get married with no Canadian citizenship for Ilya).

The problem is that RR only alluded to the very real fears of the Russian lgbtqia+ community but what should have been a major driving force behind Ilya’s actions even in TLG was scrapped for his depression and very uncharacteristic desire to come out even though it would not have been safe nor is it consistent with the Ilya of HR.

You cannot just abandon your Chekhov’s gun.. not to mention turning around and pretending it wasn’t a gun in the first place.

Okay never let people pretend the show can't be better than the book because the dialogue is almost the same. I'm not using this scene as a bad example btw it's just that...this is nothing. And later when the tension is described it's just not very... interesting or intense. This interaction is at most fine. But maybe I'm biased. Because Connor's delivery and expression definitely elevated this scene. And obviously the tension was palpable in the show
