Notes: This was meant to be a cute 4-5k word thing about the power going out during production of Cliff Beasts, based on my own experience with a power outage not too long ago. It snowballed pretty quickly as you all can see. I wrote this before second, third, and hundredth chances but @ezrasbirdie​​​​ (thank you for beta-reading this beast of a fic, darling!) suggested I post that one first. This is like 400% less angsty than that one and Dieter is the “loveable goofball” we all know and love in this one. I read from @ nzekiev on twitter that the day before yesterday it was very hard for Africans to get on any train in Kyiv, they were letting them in the last, many managed to get in only coz they started pushing African women into the train so they had to allow everyone in. Before that if they managed to get on the train they were sent back outside with the phrase "Ukrainians first", but nobody was checking anyone's passports.

Today, February 27, he says the Ukrainian soldiers at the Polish border were holding them at gunpoint if they crossed the border before Ukrainians. These are students, they can't be fighting this war!!! Other people of color share on twitter that it's harder for them to cross the border, a Nigerian medical student told @ stephheharty they were told Ukrainians go first and were sent to the back of the queue by Ukrainian soldiers on Polish border.

Another thing that I wish I could celebrate is around the corner, and true to form, I'm turning to Pero for comfort.

Despite the title, this is actually a happy little story :)

Okay, but can we talk about this absolute piece of perfection?! With Valentines Day just a few miserable hours away and the secret disappointment of spending it alone once again like every year ever present, I was not sure whether to read a story that would illustrate precisely what I was craving - whether I mean the reader's acceptance of enjoying a day that is seemingly dedicated to remind every single out there that they are missing something (cynical much?😅) or a modern!Pero Tovar, I'll let you decide.

But let me just say that it was an absolute delight💕

First of, I think it is necessary to just take a minute to admire this phrase in all it’s glory:

“Love wasn’t the actual problem. The loneliness was.”

This simple phrase I believe is the perfect summation of the spirit of this story and has no right to be this true and good and philosophical and utterly worth obsessing over.

Additionally, I love love love the carefully crafted dichotomy of the reader and their outlook on love and partnership; the tentative hope for more combined with the fear of repeated disappointment, the quick irritability and even quicker urge to help, and most of all the bleeding heart combined with the romanticism of falling in love with a stranger. *insert swooning noise*

Speaking of strangers, how can you not fall in love with this perfect rendition of a modern Pero? I mean honestly, you captured every aspect I find appealing about this image of a grumpy, kind-hearted, selfless, taciturn, not so secretly vulnerable, intimidating, closed-off, loving man - and I am well aware that these attributes don’t seem to fit together, but you managed to craft a fully rounded characterisation within those 4k words.

Throw in a saved dog and I am sold!

Long review short, this work has made me smile like a lunatic despite the nearing “dooms day”, will easily become one of the most re-read stories in my personal Pedro-character library, and I can only thank you for writing and sharing such a lovely story.
