Wanted to watch "The Eve of Ivan Kupalo" directed by Yurii Illienko and there were a few shots that made me think about Sergei Parajanov, I googled and Illienko was the cinematographer for Parajanov's "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors". And apparently Parajanov and Illienko fought like crazy while filming because of creative differences and even planned to have a duel, but bridge to a place where they were supposed to duel broke from an overflowing river when Illienko stepped on it 💀
After the failed duel Illienko was fired, but had to watch already filmed footage with Parajanov. From Illienko's memoirs: "27 minutes lasted longer than a lifetime. My entire 27-year life was packed in there. I stood up. Parajanov stood up. Without looking at each other, we left the third row and for some reason walked towards the screen. The camera crew in the last row fell silent. In front of the first row, under the dark screen, we turned to each other in unison and walked towards each other. We were already looking into each other’s eyes. There were still the same six steps between us, same amount of steps we chose to shoot each other… We just hugged under the screen and stood like that for a long time, 3 seconds, in the silence of the cinema." Then he came back to work as a cinematographer of "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors".
Also Yurii Illienko filmed a movie based on Sergei Parajanov's prison stories and he also filmed a video in 1989 while visiting Parajanov's home in Tbilisi. At the beginning Parajanov says "Tell me, did you actually have breakfast? Should I heat up pilaf for you?", they talk about the resignation of the politician who ordered Parajanov's imprisonment and then he shows around the house, pointing out his trinkets and belongings to Yurii. Never let trying to kill each other prevent you from becoming friends.
