reading timothy zahn’s novels you’re like oh yeah sure the empire is bad and there’s xenophobia and imperialism and fascism and shit but man i love these characters so much i almost forget about it
reading chuck wendig’s novels you’re like OH MY GOD. THE EMPIRE IS BAD. THEY’RE LIKE. BAD. THEY ARE NOT THE GOOD GUYS, NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT. WHERE HAS THIS REALIZATION BEEN ALL THIS TIME
Zahn writes Star Wars like he did in the 90′s. The Empire is bad, sure, but it’s a very generic bad that’s hinted at and rationalized and we can sidestep it to focus on the characters that are fun. It’s the sort of Star Wars writing you see from Allston and Stackpole and other EU writers in the same time period.
Wendig writes Star Wars in a very modern “empires aren’t just bad on an overarching generic scale but also to individuals and holy fuck does this get horrifying when you dig into it.” Which is fascinating in a completely different way and aligns very closely to what Disney has been doing with Star Wars for about the past 6-7 years.
#or to put it another way #90’s star wars looks at the empire and says we don’t need to say why nazis are bad #and modern star wars looks at the dark side and says “okay clearly SOME of y'all didn’t get the FUCKING POINT #so it has to call it out specifically (via prior reblog)
look most of the time i hate it when people are more articulate than me on my own post (that’s a compliment dbhdsdj) but i really fucking love this addition thank you!!
