Why Everything You Know About Vikings Is A Lie
True story - There are historical accounts (well, there’s at least one historical account) in which English people whine about how the Norse men bathe so often they’re able to seduce the local women away from their husbands.
^^^ Yep. Turns out the women were way more into the hot well groomed muscular dudes who liked to smell nice.
*Hot, well groomed men who liked to smell nice and knew their way around sharp objects.
“I just don’t know why you couldn’t marry a local boy sweetie.”
“What can I say dad, Hjalmar bathes regularly, smells nice, has shoulders, can wield a sword and can wield his sword ifyaknowwhatImean, and when he comes back from raids likes to shower me in rare gifts from overseas. Look at this necklace! The amber beads came from the lands of the Rus! Also, he’s teaching me how to shoot a bow and use a spear because he thinks it might be nice if I could go on raids too someday.”
I mean, frankly, if I wasn’t already married, I would marry Hjalmar, too.
Rb if you stan Hjalmar
Anyone else terrified that they are toxic and manipulative and just can’t see it? Or is that just me?
A lot of people who’ve been abused think this. It’s very common for abusers to try to convince their victims that they, in some small part, deserve the abuse. And a common way of doing that is to frame the defensive tactics of the victim as bad, manipulative things.
This includes people who are too worried of coming across as controlling or manipulative to express their needs. It took me a long time to be able to tell my boyfriend that his music was causing me physical pain because my abusers targeted my disability as justification for their behavior (saying I’m “too needy” and “need to accept that [they] have done so much for [me], the things [they] do are just part of life.”)
This includes people who are too scared to admit when they are hungry, thirsty, tired, stressed, or otherwise running on fumes, because their abusers may have made them believe that asking for (or just helping themselves to) food or sleep or space is somehow wrong or detestable.
This includes people who will still flinch, even when they’ve long “escaped” their abusers. Because it is reflexive. It is expected. It is ingrained as normal and when they do small things that may have become doable, like feeding themselves without being told to or having prepared food for others, and someone calls attention to their actions, their heart will race and they may stammer or find themselves a little panicked. Getting a snack in your shared home with your best friend in the world who helped you evacuate your abusive ex’s home can go over fine until said friend humorously, harmlessly comments “What, you didn’t get me any fruit snacks?”
The long lasting effects of abuse have funny ways of showing themselves.
Yeah this is pretty true
weird how 15 years from now it might be ur wedding or ur kids birthday but rn it’s just a regular shitty day

Trump is an abusive landlord who wants to be paid off, or he’ll kick you out or stiff you.
Trump is incapable of mutual benefit or mutual respect. It’s all zero sum. There has to be a winner, and there has to be a loser.
This is such a good thread, I’ve never thought about it this way before.
“I’ve always stood up for the underdog and the underrepresented because I can’t escape from that myself…I can’t wake up one day and not be black. I can’t wake up one day and not be a woman. I can’t wake up one day and not be fat. I always had those three things against me in this world, and because I fight for myself, I have to fight for everyone else.”
Lizzo is pure perfection, y’all.
Not sure what’s funnier, thinking Obama was president in 2005 or not realizing that’s a picture of Condoleezza Rice.
Deflecting criticism of the Trump administration by blaming the Obama administration for a disaster that happened under the George W. Bush administration AND the inability to tell two black women apart is like, the entire GOP brand in one shit diamond of a hot take
Republicans: WHERE WAS OBAMA WHEN THE CHALLENGER SPACE SHUTTLE BLEW UP!?!?!?!
Where ws Obama when Troy Fell?!!?
Where was Obama when the world ended and everyone died?!?
Where was Obama when Obama was there… But was he?

How Northerners Talk Temperature with Southerners 🌡
Southerner: Boy, it got cold!
[Dramatic *dum* sound]
Northerner: Cold? You don’t understand cold.
Southerner: I mean it’s colder than usual for us
Northerner: Where I’m from, this is what we call a sweltering, sweaty, hot day.
Southerner: I was just saying, compared to other days, it’s a little colder
[Background music becomes more intense with time]
Northerner: Stop sobbing and complaining to me about how freezing cold and miserable you are! You don’t know the meaning of the word miserable!
Southerner: I wasn’t
Northerner: You’re weak. You know nothing of this world. You make me sick.
[Background music stops]
Northerner: Okay, thanks for having us for the holidays! Be back soon!
Good News of 2017
Cause we all really need to see the good that came from this shitty year.
Things french people do…
THAT ARE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER NATIONALITIES
1- The “how many kisses” awkward situation in schools
In French schools, we greet our friends with kisses on the cheek (la bise), but depending on the region from where you come from, it depends how many kisses you give. Example: In the east of France, it tends to be three, but in Paris it will be two.
Everyday we can get awkward situations where you tend your cheek for a third kiss for example, but the other person is already done. This is why we now tend to prevent these embarrassing moments by saying “attention, j’en fais deux” (be careful I only do two kisses)
2- We never call any of our teachers or professors by their name, just “monsieur” or “madame”, or else it’s considered rude and mocking
3- We use social media differently
French kids between the ages of 12 and 15 all have in common this tradition of tagging all their closest friends on their profile pictures on Facebook, and for each person they write a long text under the description of the profile picture. Many people like me find this category of French people “ridicule”. Here’s an example of a friend of my brother’s text:
“Hugo, t’es mon tout t’es ma vie je t’aime plus que tout mon bébé coeur d’amour mon homme” (Hugo, you’re my everything my life i love you more than anything my baby love, my man) ……….and she’s 12……
Not all kids do this, I didn’t, but so many did, and they were considered the popular ones.
4- The war between the ones who prefer “beurre salé” (salted butter) or “beurre doux” (normal) on their butter in the morning (by the way, salted butter is definitely better obviously)
5- It has become a common national dislike in France for a singer called “Jul” because we find his raps ridiculous (for example a song called “Wesh alors” which means “yeah so”) and so when you say “j'aime Jul” everyone starts 😅. For fun we also do his special ✋ sign that gets people cracking: you put your fourth finger and pinky down on both hands and then stick your hands together.
6- We don’t say “phew” when we’re reassured by something: we say “ouf”
7- The song “Sardines” by Gilbert Montagné is our traditional funfair song, and everyone knows it cause it’s super funny
8- We’re so used to greeting people with two kisses on the cheek that we’re surprised when international people look at us shockingly when we get too close to them to greet them
5- We have a lot of publicity on french radio, so we start learning them by 💛 in the 🚗, and sometimes with friends we have fun singing the jingles together. For example “carglass repart, carglass remplace” “gifi des idées de génie”
9- We like distinguishing two kinds of summer vacaction french families: either the ones who go to “Le sud” or the ones who go to “Bretagne” which are two very different kinds of beaches in different regions of France
10- Our markets are usually on Saturday mornings and we have everything but especially a lot of 🧀, like a lot, and from all our french regions (they are so so good)
11- We make fun of “les aristocrates” who have names such as “de la Tour”, “de Courlet-Vrigelles”, who have castles in France and who seem to only hang out with each other. They organise their own parties called “rally” where they dance rock and maybe meet their futur boyfriend/girlfriend from the same category as them
