by the time rocky and grace arrive on erid they’ve spent 4 years constructing the worlds most unintuitive english-eridian creole language and no one can understand a word of what rocky is saying
i enjoy coltland twins as much as the next person but ppl keep making grace the younger sibling/twin and as an older sibling myself id like to pitch older!grace for several reasons: (DISCLAIMER: this is just my opinion!! and its for fun!!! headcanon whatever you wish, I'm just here to propose a different POV. this is also based on my own experience growing up as the oldest in a two-child household, so if this post might not align with everyone else who has siblings) 1) Grace carries a sort of perpetual, exhausted anxiety that can only be observed in firstborn children who have to deal with their younger siblings (im biased) 2) genuinely what part of colt seavers reads as older sibling to people bc after rewatching his movie all i could see was the memory of my own baby sibling deciding to jump off a bridge into a lake several times right before a train "for funsies" /gen 3) grace's mannerisms and how good he is at managing people (even if he doesn't realize it) scream eldest to me. i go into detail in a different post about my personal take on grace's characterization in fanon, but he's a good leader when placed in situations that require him to take charge. idk its just giving "i was raised to keep an eye on my hyperactive younger sibling and developed good classroom management skills out of it." 3.5) also colt's desperate need to please the people he cares about (wanting jody to get her movie even when he's actively getting framed for murder, etc) is like, the youngest sibling's whole thing. all they want growing up is for their older sib to think they're as cool as they see them, and spend a lot of time worrying that the people they love hate them in return, and do dumb shit to try and seem cool to try and "gain" their love or smt (shoutout to my own youngest sib for being the least subtle person on the planet about it, i still love u xoxo) 4) i understand a lot of the headcanons concerning older colt and younger grace stem from people wanting to display colt as a protective older sibling bc grace is their fav of the two (valid, again i'm a firm believer in people doing what they want with canon) however a lot of you fail to recognize that the protective YOUNGER sibling is even more intense. my lil sibling wouldnt let me out of their sight growing up and cried if i played with anyone but them. once i grew up and left the house for uni they'd always find some roundabout way to ask who im with, where i am etc whenever i'd post about parties online. it's a little exasperating, but it's also hilarious. 5) and my biggest reason, is the ANGST potential of an older grace. colt watching on TV as his older brother is declared the new scientist for the hail mary, realizing he's been abandoned by the one person he thought was always gonna be there to pick him up after a rough stunt (and later, after learning the truth, realizing that maybe he should've been protecting Grace back more fiercely than he thought he was). grace waking up light years away, working with rocky and saving their planets yet still unable to chase away the feeling that he's forgetting something, someone important back home (and, once he remembers colt, cries while going back to save rocky bc he's not just abandoning his home planet but also the brother he swore he's always watch over). Colt seeing Grace's vlogs 26 years later, and asking NASA or whoever to send smt to Erid. Grace receiving a probe with gifts from Earth and a video of Colt, realizing that due to time dilation colt is now physically older than him. his baby brother, now older than him by more than a decade. PURE angst potential guys i NEED yall to see the vision
some iterations of fanon!grace are rlly interesting to me bc people occasionally characterize him as meek and shy (which valid, i'm a firm believer in people doing what they want with canon), but I want to present a different take
as someone who's mom is also a middle school teacher, i can't help but draw links between her behavior and grace's. my mom came across as intense and intimidating to a lot of my friends growing up bc she developed a "teacher voice" (loud, project-y, in a way where she could be heard across a room without yelling), and her parenting often sounded like typical teacher lecturing bc of the tone she subconsciously switched to. she could switch between socially awkward around new people to commanding whenever she was presented with an environment that had people look to her for guidance without realizing it. she developed this intense, outgoing persona for teaching bc that's one of the few proven ways to get kids engaged with what she was saying.
idk, i feel like grace carries a lot of this intensity with him. he was literally exiled from academia for insulting the LEAD SCIENTIST IN THE FIELD publicly, and continued to stubbornly defend his thesis despite literally everyone telling him to shut up. like yeah he's a coward, he's socially awkward and self-deprecating, but i wouldn't say he's meek and shy. he speaks his mind no matter what, he pulls out his teacher voice when lecturing rocky the first time the latter came on the hail mary with his ball, and he often plays up the drama in interactions the same way my mom does to keep stuff interesting. in the book, it's also made more clear how much people in stratt's vat literally saw him as second in command due to how much he got shit done, i.e. he's rlly good at naturally assuming command in situations where people look to him for help (even if he doesn't realize it).
like i said, no hate to people who characterize him differently. i just wanted to present my own take on his character, as i find the teacher aspect rlly cool (probably my own bias, love u mom <3) and wanted to expand on how it could affect every other aspect of his character. curious to see what other people think!
i see your "reading gracerocky fic but shaking my head a little the whole time to show that i also support fully aroace grace"
and i raise you my own "interpreting grace and rocky as strictly platonic but shaking my head a little to show that a. i support the shippers/believe in their beliefs and b. my reasoning is NOT at ALL that i am opposed to a human fucking a spider made of rocks, that part rules actually"
some thoughts and ideas on mobility aids (and stuff) for grace :-)
reading gracerocky fic but shaking my head a little the whole time to show that i also support fully aroace grace
What happens when Grace doesn’t sleep for 48 hours.
Based on this panel from Dungeon Meshi:
headcanon that Grace starts a radio channel or smt when he begins teaching eridians to make science accessible for those outside the classroom, yet his eridinese is still beginner level so it sounds like baby-talk
thus, he becomes like the Eridian equivalent of miss rachel
parents all over Erid turn on his recordings when they're tired of parenting bc ofc all the kiddos would sit still long enough to listen and obsess over the "science alien," but also grace is just a rlly, rlly good teacher lol
meanwhile Grace is just happy that people are tuning in, not realizing he's been turned into every eridian kindergartner's Favourite Person™, and doesn't understand why he's suddenly being thanked by parents all over for his radio recordings instead of the astrophage debacle but hey he's flattered
Rocky isn't as oblivious and thinks the whole thing is hilarious
this sent me down a rabbit hole and apparently someone DID write a banger sesame street fic for grace so kudos to them!!

Hi guys SRRY I’m lowk on a hiatus bc of my wrist injury BUTTT HERES RAVE CHIEF LOL
people saying that padme and obi-wan's love for anakin blinded them, and that's why they couldn't suspect that he was definitely going to fall is so absurd
as if anakin's fall wasn't the most unexpected and abrupt thing in the world. as if padme wasn't shocked when it happened and when she saw anakin on mustafar because he was acting so out-of-character. as if obi-wan didn't visit padme precisely because anakin started acting strange and unusual because of the visions and palpatine manipulating him
why is it so hard for people to understand that palpatine wanting anakin to fall was the deciding factor in making it happen? yes, anakin wanted to save padme, and he was desperately trying to find any way to do so with any means he could think of and any means he could find, but if palpatine hadn't existed, or if he hadn't had access to anakin, anakin would never have fallen. because the methods anakin chose to circumvent padme's death were never directly related to the dark side or something bad at all: he talked to padme herself, he asked yoda for advice, he searched the archives for information, and yes, he wanted to save the chancellor from death and have him tried for his crimes, so he could get information palpatine claimed he possessed, but like, without joining the sith or dark side part
in any other circumstances than what we see in the film, anakin would simply never have willingly joined sidious. i think sometimes people forget that right after palpatine killed mace windu, anakin lost his balance out of pure shock and horror, and his desperate 'what have i done?' immediately after that. people forget that anakin sincerely thought that the jedi were planning to seize power in the republic and even start their own purge of senators, which would lead to an even bigger civil war — yes, this is nonsense, and we as viewers understand this, but the fact is that anakin does not: he is sleep deprived and cannot think logically, palpatine is a trusted person for him (thanks to 13 years of grooming) and he saw how mace windu technically confirmed that idea by abandoning the jedi code and refusing to detain and try sidious. people forget how scared and disgusted anakin looked when he fell to his knees, and how dead his 'thank you' was when sidious gave him a sith name, how for anakin it was selling himself into slavery, something that his whole being speaks against. in the movie he apathetically accepts the situation out of desperation, but in the novelization he was horrified and resisted the idea of joining sidious because he didn't want to be evil, palpatine had to pressure him with even more manipulation for it to work — in both cases, anakin wasn't excited about the idea of joining the sith, but hated it and planned to leave/kill sidious after things settled down, as seen in his rambling on mustafar and because his literal gut reaction to learning that palpatine is a sith is to literally kill him, something he restrains himself from because it's 'not the jedi way'
if anakin hadn't been so sure that padme and his child were about to die and the galaxy was about to plunge into chaos because of the jedi's secret plan, and he hadn't been barely able to stand on his feet due to lack of sleep and the onset of psychosis, and if the sith lord who had deceived and groomed him hadn't been standing threateningly in front of him and promising to fix everything in a situation in which anakin, after cutting off mace windu's hand, technically had no allies or escape routes for himself and padme except palpatine, then anakin would never have gone over to the dark side; like, people seriously forget how extreme anakin's situation was in rots, how extreme the situation was for all the characters, how they were all deceived — it's a tragedy. and yes, anakin still had the choice not to join sidious, he could still change his mind at any moment, think about how much sidious' words made sense at all and refuse his order, and his actions during the purge cannot be justified and saving padme at the cost of so many lives was indeed selfish, but this is not something that anyone denies, ever. it's just that anakin's love for padme blinded him, not the other way around. and of course, anakin was also blinded by his trust in palpatine and distrust in the order, to which he was conditioned by you know who
anakin joined sidious not because there was always darkness in him, or because he suddenly forgot all his jedi teachings and somehow thought that the sith and the dark side were actually good. the tragedy of rots is that anakin is a genuinely good person who is capable of both immense good and immense evil, and he decides to resort to the dark side because the situation from his pov is super critical and there is no other way out, even if it is an ultimate lie sold to him by his abuser. and then the dark side corrupts him just like it always does, because by turning to evil even for a good and understandable goal, even if you do it temporarily, you lose yourself and that goal in the process, become desensitized to violence and a worse version of yourself
on mustafar, anakin is high on his metaphysical drugs and clearly delusional/lying to himself, and padme sees this and tells him that he has changed, because he has. and obi-wan sees it too, and this is what convinces him that yoda was right and anakin is gone, because he has changed. this happened not because padme or obi-wan were once blind to anakin's inner evil, but because anakin. has. changed. from good to bad. from hero to villain. it's tragedy, a fall from grace. a negative character arc. you know, literally the whole point of prequels.

How I sleep at night knowing that loving toxic and fucked up characters/ships does not reflect my real life morals in any way:
you ever roll up to a fanzine ready to fucking go and see a miles long "DO NOT APPLY IF" page that includes shit like "if two characters meet when one of them was a minor and you ship them as grown adults" and just wonder how the hell we got to this point
It is so unbelievably funny that the moment Mon Mothma makes the declaration of Rebellion to the galaxy, literally everything for the empire fucking falls apart in the span of a god dammed year lmao
Mass rebellions, Sabotages, the empire panicks and forces things harder which results in more rebellion.
Then Governor Pryce dies, Thrawn disappears from the face of the galaxy, a Jedi denies Palpatine the way into the world between worlds by destroying a one of a kind temple, and the TIE defender program is shut down, and the empire loses Lothal.
Then literally a few months later, The ISB loses 4 of its most senior staff members, They fail to get Luthen, then a few days later, Krennic gets the Death star taken away from him, The Research facility at Eadu is destroyed, then literally the next day, the Scarif Database is attacked, a whole rebel fleet shows up out of nowhere at Scarif, They escape with the fucking plans, Empire never learning of the sabotage Galen put.
Then literally within the next weeks the fucking death star is blown up with 70% of imperial high command in it, Tarkin and Yularen die, Vader goes missing for weeks, and A skywalker is a jedi and leading the fucking charge. Then when Vader's back, Tagge dies and Cylo flips and tries to murder vader so he has to be put down as well.
I just know Palpatine was absolutely fuming in his chambers. You know the man is raging out of his mind.
