people of trc-blr would you say the hardback graphic novel is nice... i've always preferred paperbacks but virtually impossible to find in this country

i forgot just how bitterly miserably cold July is
it's been one of those of weeks... park that car drop that phone sleep on the floor dream about me!
I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but the parallel between the women of 300 fox way and Blue's boys makes me crazy
Maura, Calla, Persephone; strange three headed entity, with a silent language all to their own. They've been in this together since the beginning. They've been together so long, that its hard to see clearly, think clearly, on their own.
Persephone: enigmatic, far-away, unknowable; the sort of psychic different to all the rest, the kind you can't understand but love anyway. Quietly ready to give everything for her friends. The strange one.
Calla: blunt, fierce, loyal; the ability to understand the link between an object and its owner on a fundamental, extra-knowing way. Untempered by kindness, but kind anyway. Solid and reliable, sneering and judgemental. A good friend to have.
Maura: Idealistic, tiebreaker, action-seeker. The one who makes sense of the other two, the axis through which all other women in the house are conncted. The one clinging to the past even as she summons the future, who puts things into motion, the one who makes things okay again. The leader.
Gwenllian: wild, eccentric, free; she came in late, the mirror who sees too clearly. She fits in this place, but she cannot replace the others. Too strange for the outside world, but too mortal for her home. She is passionately herself, leaves in her veins and stars in her eyes. A mirror into the soul.
In order: Adam, Ronan, Gansey, Blue.
And the part that fucks me up:
Blue came into the picture after the once-dead-boy had been foretold to die again. Gwen came into the picture after Maura vanished, when it was uncertain she'd come back home.
Adam had a vision of himself killing Gansey, a prophecy that's haunted him for months, but didn't quite come true. Persephone died (killed herself) scrying (another type of vision) to find Maura (there wasn't a guarantee it would kill her).
Calla endured her best friend vanishing (when she told her not to); she endured her other best friend dying when she knew better. Ronan was the last to know Gansey would die (he knew anyway). Calla was alone in the knowing; Ronan was alone in ignorance.
Maura came back; gansey didn't (until he did).
Persephone is dead, Adam is not (his forest is gone)

pathetic affirmations (button sets, part 2) by Claire Thompson
some people seem to think aotearoa new zealand is just fields and hills and grass. maybe some mountains. maybe a fjord or two. which is so fascinating to me because we have so many different biomes and landscapes it's bonkers.
we have massive volcanic fields. we have native palm trees and mangroves up north. we have huge swaths of geothermal areas that have geysers and bubbling hot mud and multicoloured pools. we have dense temperate rainforests. we have fern trees that grow ridiculously tall. we have huge tussock grasslands. we have a freezing cold desert. we have huge black sand beaches. we have sand dunes that stretch for kilometres. I love you aotearoa. this isn't even all of it these are just a few examples man
it's ridiculously beautiful and varied over here and yet when you say "new zealand", a lot of people imagine grass fields and sheep. which to be fair. we do also have. BUT STILL
long story short: it's not all fields and sheep. p.s. yes those are people at the top of the sand dune in the last photo

#I have a suspicion that a lot of people think aotearoa is a lot smaller than it actually is #I think there's a tendency especially for europeans and east-coast americans to think of it as 'a small island off of australia' #which like #it's small compared to australia #but most countries are small compared to australia #aotearoa has a greater area than the entire united kingdom #it also spans about 15° of latitude #which is 50% more than england #and also more than any US state except Alaska
"off of australia" is also a bit misleading; the distance looks small on a map, but that's because your brain is comparing it to the entire pacific ocean on the other side.
sydney (eastern coast of australia) to auckland (nz north island) is a three hour plane flight.
EXACTLY!!!!! we stretch from florida to new york if you put aotearoa on a map of the US. it's like saying "japan is a small island off the coast of china" to me
BIG!

warriors AND all blacks playing on the same night is fucking brutal. but when the warriors are losing at least you have the all blacks
actually im not done buffy is transgender for real. she's a girl, but she's something else too that the other girls at school aren't, and she knows that that identity automatically makes her an outsider from all the other girls at school. she likes who she is, but sometimes watching Cordelia, she can't help but long for the ease of being "normal". her friends love and support her, but they aren't like her, and she knows that means there are some parts of her life that they'll just never understand. she wants to be homecoming queen so badly, if only to prove to herself that she can be this other thing and also a regular high school girl at the same time. how she tries to hide her identity from her mother for as long as she can. how when she finally tells joyce, they get in a huge argument because joyce is so afraid of what this means for buffy's safety that she tries to stop her from being herself. the fact that buffy, arguing with her mother about her own identity, says "You think I chose to be like this? Do you have any idea how lonely it is? How dangerous?" The fact that a stranger tells her "But you're just a girl." and she says "That's what I keep saying."
[Image description, since the alt text button is actually just in the screenshot: Screenshot of this Bluesky post by user seagoatscreams, dated February 12, 2024. He says, "Once upon a time, the ever-evolving graffiti on this reservoir near the psych unit was a cave-painting-record. I photographed much of it over months. One day they painted it grey. The next day:" After this is a photo of the wall, a flat gray with text written on it that says, "With grey paint we silence some voices in society. Advertising is fine -- it is, after all, the graffiti of the rich." /end description]

on second thoughts it's a good thing that nz driver's license system is so insane because the older drivers i see who definitely did the easier version that got phased out almost cause crashes everyday
okay and then i was thinking hm how did adam parrish get his driver's license (no support network; maybe boyd's?) and i find out how INSANELY easy it is to get a driver's license in virginia. a two-part test and a THIRTY MINUTE in-car assessment??? america why!
on driving as being a facilitator of autonomy and individuality i do think it is soo dependent on public transport network and a car-centric society. i also feel that i tend to see it in a coming of age light e.g. young people first getting their license, whereas there are so many barriers to being able to (legally) drive that make telling stories with driving as a symbol of autonomy more compelling - e.g. disability, no support network, lack of funds and/or accessibility. not that 'coming of age' and disability, lack of support, accessibility issues are mutually exclusive.
sure, let's have a black woman be basically a caricature, call her black father a nappy-headed slave, claim she never cared for him even though the past two seasons make it very clear that's not true, say she hates him more than her rapist and the people who murdered her, claim she intentionally and maliciously lied about being threatened with rape, say she prefers her white father (who horrifically abused her for 30 years btw) over him, and then have said fathers not show a single intense emotion over it afterwards. you know, since we can have characters just do ANYTHING now.
