prophecy girl
love a character that's like. i survived (<- not a brag) (<- this is a curse that weighs on me every waking hour)
I really love how every time Buffy is like "I know there's not a lot of substantial evidence, but I have a feeling this will happen and we need to investigate more" and the scoobies very kindly call her hypervigilant and paranoid and suggest she take a break or whatever Buffy turns out to be right. Maybe she'll get a specific wrong or something but even then she was right to look into whatever the thing was. She's trusts her instincts and it pays off. And the scoobies aren't assholes either, for every one time they dismiss her there's five times that they don't. And there's always reasonable evidence to Buffy being tired or stressed or just things looking benign and normal. And they always apologize for not believing her. And goddamn is it nice to see adults and peers alike tell a teenage girl thank you for ignoring us, thank you for trusting yourself, thank you for sticking to what you know to be true even when the people around you, well intentioned they may be, called you crazy for seeing what you see. We were wrong, you were right, and people are alive today because of you.
the problem with watching buffy the vampire slayer for the first time when you're 13 is that it will fundamentally reshape your brain chemistry to the point where literally all fiction becomes buffy the vampire slayer in different fonts. "watch another show!" you might say, and believe me i have! i promise i've watched many other shows since i was 13. but the problem is that all those other shows as well as films, books, podcasts etc. are simply deviations of buffy the vampire slayer to me. it's the holy text, the primary source. everything else is just commentary.
THE SACRED TEXTS???????
Top 2 things btvs punishes Buffy for:
Having sex
Having a birthday
3. enjoying Halloween
do we think sunnydale had a planned parenthood clinic
idk but los angeles needed another one
Tis the season. Whatever that means
My gift to you is Faith textposts pt 7.
remember when spike said to buffy that one day, sheâs going to have a death wish and when that happens heâs going to slip in and âhave himself a real good dayâ? and then buffy comes back from paradise with a death wish and xander says to spike âtell me seeing her alive wasnât the best moment of your existenceâ?
just thinking about that.
If Jenny Calendar had lived she wouldn't be the Scoobies new mom or their mentor or whatever but she would be their vodka aunt giving unsolicited advice that would either solve their problems easily and effectively or land them in jail or dead.
my latest hot take btw is that i kinda hate when people point to giles saying âspikeâs like a son to meâ in restless and say that this is actually an insightful observation about their dynamic? i feel like to do that takes away from how excellent that is as a character beat for xander. itâs very important that this is in xanderâs dream! the reading i always got from that is really clear â xander feels like giles doesnât love him. heâs seen giles and spikeâs mutual enmity and antipathy in season four and gone âif given the choice, giles would make spike a watcher â theyâre bound together by britishness and weird rituals.â the abject absurdity and playfulness of giles and spikeâs dynamic within that scene emphasizes that xander doesnât totally understand whatâs going on there but they look like theyâre having fun! and he wants to be a part of it but giles would never consider him for that! itâs so so important TO the metaphor that giles and spike donât actually get along irl and donât actually have that father-son bond, because it is specifically about this being someone that giles doesnât like. itâs about the fact that giles doesnât like spike, but would still pick spike over xander.
actually im not done buffy is transgender for real. she's a girl, but she's something else too that the other girls at school aren't, and she knows that that identity automatically makes her an outsider from all the other girls at school. she likes who she is, but sometimes watching Cordelia, she can't help but long for the ease of being "normal". her friends love and support her, but they aren't like her, and she knows that means there are some parts of her life that they'll just never understand. she wants to be homecoming queen so badly, if only to prove to herself that she can be this other thing and also a regular high school girl at the same time. how she tries to hide her identity from her mother for as long as she can. how when she finally tells joyce, they get in a huge argument because joyce is so afraid of what this means for buffy's safety that she tries to stop her from being herself. the fact that buffy, arguing with her mother about her own identity, says "You think I chose to be like this? Do you have any idea how lonely it is? How dangerous?" The fact that a stranger tells her "But you're just a girl." and she says "That's what I keep saying."
not by any means a new post but the parallels between being a slayer and being transgender make me crazy sometimes. you just want to be safe and normal and like everyone else but eventually you have to realise you can't escape who you are. you're not like them. you might learn to love your identity, later on in life, but right now you're in high school and if your peers find out about you you'll be ostracized. literally there's an entire organization made up of people you've never met, that don't even seem to view you as a real person, but think they can dictate exactly what you should and shouldn't be allowed to do. they don't want you to date. they don't even really want you to have friends, and they definitely don't want you to talk to anyone about what you are, lest others get sucked into this abnormal world you live in. buffy literally had to argue with her watcher over her being allowed to participate in high school sports, because she wanted to try out for the cheerleading team.
they were so live slug reaction about this
the way none of buffy's friends took a swing at riley in as you were for being a CHEATER really gets my blood boiling
just watched Army of Darkness (1992). do you guys think xander fantasizes about being like ash williams
Actually, a good part of this season's crappiness comes down to how it totally fails to sell this season's apocalypse as unique to any other season's apocalypse. S6 smartly realised that there was no way to top fighting a god and the protagonist dying, and so they went in the complete opposite direction and committed to it. While S7 tries to constantly hype up how Specially Bad and Unstoppable the First is, and how this Evil is totally different from every other Evil that they've ever seen before. It's very Supernatural. Very "oh we've defeated a god well here's uh a super mega evil god from the beginning of time".
And then the First doesn't actually do anything of substance. If you're dead set on hyping up a Special Evil Guy then they have to do something that Evil Guys haven't done before. Kill a main character. Blow up the Summers house. Turn off Buffy's powers. Literally anything that denotes a structural threat to the show and not "I swear guys this one's Really bad". He doesn't even kill Jenny Calendar.
