You’ve just realized something strange about the humans. They’re a race that joined the galaxy recently, but you’ve just found evidence of them already been part of it for many millennia before, but it feels like everybody’s forgotten.
We were delighted when the people calling themselves ‘humans’ joined the spacefaring races. They were clever and agile, hot-tempered and humorous, fierce and yet friendly, a young species with much to offer us.
Most species are still delighted. But we are the Bybleotekar, the recorders of the spaceways, and we have begun to wonder. Our merry companions are… not different, but too much the same. They understand so readily, accept so quickly - most new species have trouble adjusting to dealing with aliens, to the realities of space travel, to the sheer bigness of the universe. But the humans are so adaptable, so ready for it all, they might be remembering something they’ve forgotten, not learning something new.
Some of us, the Izaslanik of the Bybleotekar, the gatherers of information for the record keepers, began encouraging humans to join us, that we might study them more closely. They like the work - they are a curious species, delighting in new knowledge, and they make able assistants. My human companion is named Mira, a young female. She is a good companion, who sings sweetly and laughs often.
When Mira struck the first blow against what I thought I knew of the universe, against illusions soon to shatter that I had thought were truth, we were attending the coronation of a lesser Netar of the Kktil, recording the customs and ceremonies and unofficially enjoying the colourful celebrations. Mira was watching the dancing, her mouth widened in a ‘smile’. “It’s so pretty,” she said, her hairless face sheened with sweat under the hot sun. “I love the turquoise jewellery.” She pointed to the bright blue stones that bedecked the dancers. “I should buy some. Our homeworld doesn’t have any turquoise, you know. Only a few pieces we brought with us when we came.”
It takes me a little while to understand what she said. It is only later, during the feasting, that I turn to her again. “You said your homeworld doesn’t have turquoise. Only… what you brought with you. Do you mean turquoise you have bought offworld, since you joined the spaceways?”

Hot take on braids
The scroll doesn’t change the dragons genes, but is just a tutorial on how to braid your mane for gaolers. When gaolers have children, they teach their kids to braid their hair.
A Menagerie of Skydancers! These beautiful dragons seem to come in all sorts of varieties from all across sorineth!

A second pass at the tundra horn variants I made some…. five years ago?
I’m much better at art now…
deities as lesser known / less popular instruments
arcanist: theremin [this electronic instrument was invented in the 1920s, and is played by the movement of the hands through electrical signals, without touching the apparatus itself; neil armstrong took recordings of theremin music with him to the moon.]
flamecaller: marimba [a percussion instrument with ancient origins in africa and popularized in modern times in mexico; it typically has up to five octaves with keys arranged like a piano’s, and is played using anywhere from 2 to 8 rubber or yarn-tipped mallets.]
windsinger: hammered dulcimer [ancestor of the piano; has many pitched strings which are struck by a hammer to create sound. it is most often trapezoidal in shape, the upper register sounds somewhat like a harp, and variations are found in many cultures across the world.]
lightweaver: euphonium [its name is latin, with ‘eu’ meaning good and ‘phon’ meaning sound, or ‘good sound’. this modern low brass instrument produces a very sweet and melodic sound, akin to a gentler trombone; it is often featured in ballads as a solo instrument.]
stormcatcher: hurdy gurdy [this instrument is played by hand-cranking a wheel that rubs against a string; pitch is modulated with a set of keys. the string sometimes makes a buzzing noise that sounds like an electrical current as it rubs along the wheel.]
shadowbinder: aulos [an ancient greek instrument which consists of two double-reed pipes that are played simultaneously. the resulting sound is rather haunting and similar to that of a bagpipe, though it lacks the characteristic air reservoir. all modern aulos are recreations based on art and descriptions, as no ancient aulos survive.]
tidelord: theater organ [not as well known as its famous church counterpart, these huge instruments were developed in the early 1900s to replace large scale orchestras, and often accompanied silent films. it is also known as a ‘unit orchestra’ and is playable by a single person.]
earthshaker: serpent [this is a precursor to the modern tuba; it uses a mouthpiece similar to that of a brass instrument but has a snake-like body with woodwind-type holes in its wooden body, which creates an almost mournful sound that makes it something of a hybrid between the two classes.]
gladekeeper: bagpipes [typically attributed to scotland and ireland, but actually ubiquitous to many ancient cultures across the globe; emperor nero played a roman variant of this instrument. the sound of bagpipes can carry miles, and thus they were often used as signals in battle.]
plaguebringer: marching cymbals [this instrument’s role in the modern ensemble is mostly supplementary, consisting of elaborate visuals interspersed with crashes. it is typically played in groups of 5 to 6, and accompanies the battery. the most famous brand is zildjian, which has produced cymbals for 400 years.]
icewarden: harmonica [each individual chamber of this 1800s instrument contains at least one reed of its own; they are also known as ‘mouth organs’ because one person can play many notes simultaneously. due to its cultural connotations and its chord abilities, this instrument tends to evoke a feeling of loneliness.]
I'm back to thinking about Icewarden
Specifically about his cold, distant nature and how it might relate to his obsession with the shade.
He's structured his whole existence around capture of the shade. This has recently expanded to also include the imprisonment of mortal criminals (possibly, we don't know for sure) but the original goal was to contain the shade.
He also made his dragons to that end. Both ice breeds are built for capturing shade and guarding the prison.
He also keeps both of those breeds at a significant distance, physically and emotionally.
Here is where I'm going to loan in a headcanon that @gimmethemprimals brought to my attention: Icewarden keeps a number of his prisoners on his person at all times, frozen into his literal body.
This makes sense. This is the only way he can be 100% certain that they will stay contained forever. If they make it out of there, either a god let them out (which none of them would) or Icewarden is dead (at which point that's probably the least of the world's problems.)
But what if this practice had an unforseen consequence? What if after so many thousand years like this, Icewarden himself started to suffer some form of shade infection? What if he keeps himself far away from the rest of the world because he's containing himself, locked away to keep the world safe in a Hollow Knight esque great sacrifice?
Or if his power as a deity allows him to resist, but any mortal allowed too close would succumb to the darkness inside him? If he hid the Gaolers away because he noticed himself starting to give off shade touch and knew that they were made with too strong of a one track mind and if they ever saw him like that they would reject him...?
What if he loves his children and his siblings just as much as anyone else, but forces himself to stay away for their own protection?
so i was thinking about that song the young banescales heard when they hatched, but the breed’s encyclopedia entry is of no use. it appears onsite lore makes no reference to where in all of sornieth it came from.
so here’s my proposition: it’s from their god.
because the thing is- a very, very long time ago, the flamecaller lost her firstborn to war.
they were her banescales, creations of her own claw, her own flesh and bone: glorious creatures of sky and of flame. and they were annihilated, so entirely and ruthlessly by the icewarden’s children.
it is heartbreaking. for millennia, she grieves.
but time goes on. the banescales may be gone, but in time the flamecaller fashions a new race. they are dragons, but they are not in her image. never: the banescales were that, and nothing will ever replace them.
her youngest children are different. they are soft and they are gentle; they are not the fury of the blaze but its warmth and welcome.
but still they sing. her children will always, always sing.
then the gaolers emerge from the ice. it is hard to look at them and not see monsters, but she must remind herself that these are not the dragons that killed her children. the bitterness clings, but she is quiet, and she does not chase them from her land.
she wonders, sometimes, why the icewarden got to keep his firstborn, but she did not. they may be gods, but they too are bound by chance and fate and chaos crying out.
her people are at war once again. how history repeats itself.
and then magma rips through ancient ice beneath the blacksand annex-
-and oh.
it is something monumental. as the first banescale hatchling in some eternity blinks against the sun, the flamecaller can feel all of sornieth pause for a moment. even, so far away, her brothers and sisters.
they have been gone so long.
but they are hatchlings, alone in this world: they have no parents to teach them their ways nor their names. this is unacceptable.
and so, deep underneath the volcano, the flamecaller stirs. she is made of fire and strength; she is power given form, the inferno incarnate. she draws up her voice long fallen silent, and she sings.
it sweeps across the ashfall waste and beyond. it is captivating, even to those who do not know what it means. the flamecaller has not sung in a very, very long time.
her banescales have scattered: drifted on the wind to all corners of the world. but still they are the same, and it is instinct, their magic resonating with their mother’s song. they raise their own voices, so young and fragile, to chorus.
her siblings brush against her presence. she can feel when the first banescale crosses the ocean; when the first talons of fire touch down on the frozen continent. a gaoler stands to greet him, and they call to one another.
the icewarden is there, too. he looks to the flamecaller, long and quiet. she meets him easily, and does not falter. their history stretches out between them, terrible and bloodsoaked.
but she has allowed his children into her land, and he will do the same.
so there are banescales, again. they are without a culture and without a history, but the flamecaller wonders if that is for the best. they were defined by their war, those last decades: there was very little left of them that was not made of blood and fury.
though the song dies out, its echo resonates. the world is changing, and the dead have come alive; there is something shifting beneath the earth and fate draws near. a turning point is coming.
but the flamecaller will face it with her firstborns and her youngest together. come what may, she will raise her head to the sky and sing to the primal heavens. here it is: the fire does not die.
Lore Ideas/Prompts for Your New Gaolers
Introduce them to your local Tundra herd. Isn’t it funny that this new clanmate smells just like Great-great-great-grandma Ruth? (Alternatively: we love our new Tundra friend! They have the sharpest horns and the fluffiest fur- and they never, ever forget. Anything.)
Put them in charge of your daycare/hatchery. Baby jail is real. No hatchling will ever escape naptime again.
Put them in charge of your hoard. “No, you may not take 2000 gems out to impulse-buy that ungened G1. Money is a terrible, terrible evil, and I must keep it trapped here, where it can’t hurt anyone.”
If you breed-changed a dragon into a Gaoler, how are they taking it? Was the breed change a result of some kind of magical mishap? Did your Tundra wizard tap into some primal, ancient magic? Were they born as a primitive throwback to the beginning of the Third Age? What would result from mixing the protective instincts of a Guardian, or the pack-hunting skills of a Mirror, with the ruthlessness of a Gaoler? Or imposing Wildclaw hierarchy upon a Gaoler-run prison?
Since Gaolers can be born with non-Ice eyes, how did they end up all the way in the Ashfall Wastes or the Sea of a Thousand Currents? Are they guarding some elder evil your clan accidentally built their lair on top of? Are they a weird, stunted subspecies adapted to swim through molten lava in pursuit of their captives? Do they use Water Flight Divination to foresee jailbreaks and predict where their targets are going to attempt to flee?
If your Gaoler is in Lightning Flight, how are they reacting to all this new technology? Is some lucky Gaoler out there right now learning how to fly with their brand-new mechanical wings?
Slip a Gaoler egg into somebody’s nest. Insist that there’s nothing wrong with their giant fluffy monster-baby, and yes, sometimes hatchlings don’t look quite like either parent. Especially if they’re Faes.
If you have more lore ideas, please share them!
you know those cool little party avatars in the coli? the long skinny ones?
guess who figured out how to rip ‘em o/ it even works on dragons who are unnamed and therefore un-coli-able
i have now learned how to auto generate them
the lair database from hell has become 500% more hellish
t-teach me your ways this would save me so much time in photoshop
You could use this:
http://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/ID FROM GENERATE CODE/ID FROM GENERATE CODE.png
Just exchange the ID FROM GENERATE CODE using your dragon’s ID. It also works with the sprites from coli, just copy the link from above and exchange “portraits” to “battlesprites”.
Example for portrait | Example for battlesprite
Thank you for the addition! Just take note that you have to do a little more than simply add your dragon’s ID. The final url looks like this:
http://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/286232/28623142.png
Where the last number is the ID, but the first you have to calculate. You can get by removing the last two digits and then adding 1.
Tada! The Excel formula looks something like this:
=IMAGE(concatenate(“http://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/”,CEILING((D2+1)/100),“/”,D2,“.png”))
Where D2 whatever cell is storing the ID number. You can also use something similar to generate [img] tags for use in bios or forum posts!
=concatenate(“[img]http://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/”,CEILING((D2+1)/100),“/”,D2,“.png[/img]”)
I’d like to thank this post for making my own spreadsheet 10 times as hella
@myndris thought you might find this useful
@hungrytundras your clan page Greatly Interests me
Save yourself some time and use this code generator, it’s a-fucking-mazing
Code Generator
The easiest way I know is to just use the dragon’s URL (the one FR gives you when you click on “Generate Code” on your dragon’s profile page) and then just exchange the 350 in the middle with coliseum/portraits and remove the _350 at the end.
So for example, if this is my dragon’s URL (bolded parts are what I mentioned above):
[url=http://flightrising.com/main.php?dragon=43956434] [img]http://flightrising.com/rendern/350/439565/43956434_350.png[/img] [/url]
Doing this:
[url=http://flightrising.com/main.php?dragon=43956434] [img]http://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/439565/43956434.png[/img] [/url]
will give me this:
It comes with the neat feature of linking to the dragon. Obviously you can just use the [img]…[/img] part if you just want the picture and no link.
This works for the battlesprite, too. Just use coliseum/battlesprites instead of coliseum/portraits!
Or literally put the dragon ID into the coder generator and select coli portrait and it does it for youuuuuuu and it links to the dragon
