I am trying to draw all WOF characters!! And, I also will draw your own headcanons for a character!!

"one of the only dragons we see with two wings ripped off" he's the only one. osprey is the only dragon like this. make literally any other character disabled in the way you described osprey's, don't change his disability to something more palatable. he is the ONLY dragon missing both wings. do you know how cool that is? what great representation that is for people like myself (amputees)? do you know how cool it was to see a character like me, who used to have so much freedom but was now limited? i understand that osprey dies and has only a few lines. i also understand that osprey, the wingless dragon, is an amputee (willing or not). let him be an amputee. let LITERALLY any other dragon fulfill the role you have given osprey

Okay. I want to preface everything by saying anon, I know where you're coming from on this stance, and no, I didn't portray Osprey in this way to make his disability "more palpable". In no way did I ever intend to come off that way, nor would I ever downplay a disability for something like that.

Like I stated in my original post, I acknowledged that Osprey was "one of the only dragons with two wings ripped off" that we see. I phrased it in that way due to my memory being complete shit and me being unsure if we actually see any other dragons with two wings gone. I can list two dragons off the top of my head each with one individual ripped wings, but not two. Nonetheless, in case I did forget someone, I didn't want to mistakenly just say one.

But, yes, Osprey is the only dragon with BOTH (emphasis of both) wings either damaged or completely ripped off. No other wof dragon that I know has two wings ripped off. But... That's. Not in the novels.

In the novels written by Tui, Osprey is never stated to not have both wings. He canonically has both. The reason he can't fly in the novels is due to his tail paralysis, which is explicitly stated in the text. The graphic novel is the only interpretation that shows him with both wings ripped off. That's it. His basic reference on the wiki reflects his book appearance - two wings, paralyzed tail. That is his character in the book, which is what my design was taking from.

I was not "making his disability more palatable", as I explained in my post that I wanted to try and expand on his NOVEL. APPEARANCE. The novels I grew up with that formed my view on Osprey. I never imagined him to be a dragon without two wings - I imagined him to be a dragon which had a paralyzed tail that made him unable to fly. And, because of that, I wanted to be book accurate! I wanted to emphasize the possible invisibility of his disability, because I know that people with more invisible disabilities often get told they aren't "disabled enough", and I felt novel Osprey would be a good representation of that! Because yeah! He has both wings, one would probably assume he can fly, right? But no, he can't, and I wanted to emphasize that part of him.

I also stated this but why not restate it too: Osprey is one of my absolute favorite dragons in this series. This isn't about him having a handful of lines or being dead. This is about me growing up with one version of Osprey that is canon to me - tail paralysis. Do I think it's rad as fuck that he doesn't have his wings in the graphic novel? Yes! That's awesome! Do I think it's great representation? Absolutely man! But is that my version of Osprey? No. And, since these first designs are *my HEADCANONS* and *my versions of their designs*, I wanted to stick to his novel accurate appearance, the appearance I grew up with, and show a headcanon of Osprey being a dragon who struggles in day to day life without being "disabled enough" for the dragons in his kingdom. That is what I was looking to aim for, not erasing something you find solace in, anon.

And look anon, I understand being mad about this, but I also clarified this in my original post! I clarified that I wanted his design to be based off the novel, which I'm nostalgic for and fond of, compared to the graphic novels - which I am also fond of, don't get me wrong! But I also didn't grow up with them like I did with the first five novels.

And, if you wanted to, you could've sent me a far kinder ask for clarity! Hell, wingless Osprey would be a great ask to send in for a headcanoned/alternate design of him, since I offer to do those after I do my designs! But frankly claiming that I, a random artist you know NOTHING about, was trying to make my favorite character "more palpable" because showed his novel accurate disability? That's just a bad way to go about it. Can Novel Osprey never be drawn?? Will it always have to be the graphic novel version?? Cuz I hope you don't go harass ALL the artists that draw him with wings based off the novel, like, I'm sorry, but that is one of his canon fucking designs. If I completely got rid of his ripped wings when he was disabled in *both* the novel AND the comic - then yes! I am doing it with malicious intent! But, this is just what Osprey looks like in the novel. And if it makes you mad I took from the design I grew up with, then I'm sorry, but that's not my problem. Block me and move on. It's that simple.

And hey, if you want me to draw him without wings, all you have to do is send me a request instead of an angry rant you sent on anon so I wouldn't know who you were :] or hell shoot me a DM and we can talk!

I'm not trying to be mean anon, I promise, but he has two designs, and one of those I grew up with and find interesting to dig into. I would love to draw a graphic novel version of Osprey - I very much would! But I'd prefer it be requested in a kind tone rather than one yelling at me for an accurate depiction of a characters disability. Thanks.

I made him more blue compared to his canon (bro is green) because I've just always seen him as more blue, mostly due to the way he looks on the cover of his novel

lowkey just went wild with the royal seawing markings he has lmfao

I made his snout shorter, bulkier, and rounder than I normally make a seawing's snout since I felt it was fitting for him and his personality

he probably is able to speak aquatic very very well and taught his brothers how to speak it when they were younger and learning :3

also I headcanon he undid the forgiveness shit on his brothers I can't remember if that's already canon or not but yeah I think they forgave him for it like soon after man ToT

The wiki reminded me that he apparently is almost blind, so I decided to give him glasses because I can!! My blind old man... how I love him.... <333

okay this is a long point but trust me I swear it has purpose. In my drawing of Osprey it's pretty obvious that, like, it doesn't LOOK like there's anything up with him. He looks like a normal dragon - his wings are there, he doesn't have any super noticeable scars, and his tail looks normal (although, you could argue it maybe looks a bit stiff, but he could also just be resting it). My point is he looks "normal". Most Osprey art I've seen - including him in the graphic novel - either rips off his wings or makes his tail noticeably "off". And, ofc, absolutely no hate or badness towards people who do that! I get it! Technically, for the graphic novels, that is his canon design! And he's one of the few dragons we've seen in this series who has two wings ripped off, so I get that drawing him that way probably would look sick!! And, plus, the graphic novel showing him without wings probably was just so the scene of him being dropped by Scarlet was easier to understand (since explaining how tails are important to flight would be more difficult to do comic-form compared to novel-form). And like with all of this in mind, I love art of Osprey with torn wings or scars or a fucked tail, but like... I also really like how Osprey has a disability that like, if you look at him, you wouldn't necessarily be able to tell he has it. Like, in canon his tail isn't scarred, it's just paralyzed, so he can't use it much. And like, idk. I think it's cool he canonically has a disability that is probably one of the closest things to an invisible disability a dragon has had to my memory in this series (but that's with me headcanoning it's only the end of his tail that's paralyzed, not the whole thing - his whole tail being paralyzed would make it a more obvious disability yes, but some of my points would still stand) Like! Idk! It's just cool to have a character who doesn't necessarily have any outward appearances to indicate he's disabled. I think we need more of that sometimes, yk? But, uh, yeah, I just really love Osprey :]

I think in canon and fanart his scar gets really, REALLY downplayed. Like I was just reading the graphic novels and up until Turtle's book, is scar looks bad yes but not like. As bad as it probably is, yk? And then half the time fanart just makes it look like qibli's scar like no man that shit got basically deathly close to his left eye CMON!!!!

Also I think his vision is extremely fucked up since Viper's slash basically hit directly next to his eye. And they did NOT get shit to heal it for a while, so I headcanon his left eye is basically nonfunctioning (he can tell light/darkness but everything is so blurred he cant make shit out with it

Due to this partial blindness, he has a hella hard time flying around.

I also believe Flame has some sort of paranoia disorder or just suffers from extreme paranoia in general... and, I feel like he has a fear of lava (or maybe even fire) from what happened to Viper.

Also, about when Darkstalker heals his scar! I believe that animus magic can greatly heal scars, but the longer they're around the slightly harder they get to heal. Of course, the worst of the worst scars could be healed and it'd honestly just be barely noticeable discoloring, but still. Here, though, you can see that even though Flame's scar is "healed" it's still rather noticeable... hm. Well, my reasoning for that is Darkstalker's manipulation tactics (and overally just is personality). It's implied how he doesn't directly enchant dragons and instead gives them enchanted items as to control their powers in a sense... He's kinda petty about power giving in a way! And I think to be more petty he'd really just half heal Flame's scar, then make a snarky remark about Stonemover, then get Flame to try and kill Stonemover so he could play the hero. But, that's just a theory X3 and my headcanon lol

also its darkstalker he would not waste more time then he needed to on healing some random Skywing's scar lol especially a skywing who was being bitchy to him pff

I made her chubby and short because that's just always how I imagine Fatespeaker. Let my chubby girl cook alright !!

my friend @princeofthedark gave me the brilliant idea to make Fatespeaker partially seawing so 1. I could make her short but 2. to explain her white scales... sorta...

I gave her more white scales then just her teardrops and the weird bracelet pattern because of this "seawing" DNA ("albatross was almost white so it is possible probably" - Ralsei), and Ralsei and I were like "what if her white scales could weakly glow" and so yeah. White freckle scales that illuminate slight light? Beautiful

I also figure Fatespeaker isn't aware of this part of her heritage (there's probably an absent grandparent to blame for the genes), so that's a cool aspect too :>

Thanks to her seawing side she has better night vision than average

Also she got the purple aspects from the seawing genes too (imagine a white and purple seawing... boom you have Fatespeaker's grandparent lol)

and yes like her white scales the white stars on her wing also glow slightly <3

But as requested by @princeofthedark I drew Whiteout! The very first one of this task, how exciting!

Design notes:

she has little freckles everywhere because I wanted the stars on the inside of her wings to also be on her body! Cuz I thought that was a fun idea, idk :]

made the white dots that go alongside Nightwings bodies into stars for her, again to keep with star theme :3

I made the star markings on her wings randomly clumped together more. This came about because of a pencil stain on the paper actually. It turned out really cool imo!!

her right side is mostly white while her left side is mostly black :]

Some random headcanons of mine I'll throw in here because why not:

I think she's an aromantic lesbian who uses she/they :]

Darkstalker enchanted for her a necklace that would make her look more "normal" to help fit in more with the Nightwings. Her normal design I should draw sometime, it's basically her canon design but tweaked a bit-

After Darkstalker was banished, Whiteout decided to destroy the necklace and instead live as herself

After her brother was sealed away, I headcanon she was so ostracized from the Nightwings she and Thoughtful (oh yeah bros here too- I headcanon she's actually trans mtf :> but anyways-) leave the city and instead go live out in a forest in the mountains near the Sky Kingdom :]

she also has PTSD from all the horrors she witnessed with Animus magic :( this is another reason she destroys the necklace and leaves the nightwings

Eventually when her and Thoughtful have kids, they migrate back to the Nightwing colony (to keep the Animus blood line going). Thoughtful sometimes also returns to the city, but Whiteout refuses to ever return. Her kids come and visit her some days instead as a compromise. Some kids do stay with them tho!

I mentioned earlier how I think she has PTSD, but I also see them being on the autism spectrum!

And yeah :] whiteout is really cool and Ralsei has definitely got me on the hype train for it haha. Yeah!!
