I need everyone to mentally replace the word "fine" with "bribe". If you're wealthy enough to affordably pay fines, a fine isn't a deterrent; It's the government taking its cut. Fines are just a trick of phrasing to make it sound like a punishment instead of a cost of doing business.

What about those civilized countries where fines are calculated according to what you earn so it theoretically hurts the same at every level of wealth?

If you take 30% out of the bank account of someone who has $2,000, that's a heavy blow that might stop them from paying rent and could catastrophically impact their life.

If you take that same 30% out of the bank account of someone who has $32 billion, they will still be a multi-billionaire afterwards.

The logic still applies: If I would make more money by disregarding this law and paying the government its cut than I would save by obeying the law, then I'll break it with gusto.

There is no way to apply a financial penalty to an action that doesn't inherently result in a biased law that punishes the poor and rewards the wealthy. So long as the penalty is a simple financial risk analysis calculation, it will always be little more than a potential cost of doing business in the eyes of the rich.

That, at the end of the day, is the problem with fines. They amount to little more than a tax on the rich while crippling the poor.

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.

Without fail, every time a woman is talking about how she does not want to have children and never wants to be pregnant and how medical professionals, romantic interests and family members keep trying to bulldoze her decision and keep expecting her to change her mind because motherhood is something that is expected of all women and it is abhorrent to think a woman could not desire it, a random mother spawns in the comments to be like “Well, actually, you never know! and then there's sonam wangchuk. if you've watched 3 idiots, he's the real engineer the character was based on. built solar schools in ladakh. invented ice stupas so himalayan villages have water. spent his whole life on education. he's 59 and he's been on hunger strike for 17+ days now. reporters went to see him this week and he was too weak to talk. and the troll armies are calling him "anti national" and "foreign funded". a man starving himself for other people's children. that's the thing here, anyone who asks a question is suddenly a traitor.

it's not one incident, it's everywhere you look:

• infrastructure worth thousands of crores failing within months of the ribbon cutting. tunnels collapsing in regions where heavy rain is a guarantee, not a surprise.

• youth unemployment near 10% for ages 15 to 29, 13.6% in cities. in a country of 1.42 billion where more than half the population is young.

• only about the top 3% of indians earn above 10 lakh a year. meanwhile billionaire wealth keeps ballooning and the headlines celebrate it.

• manipur burned for over two years. an ethnic conflict, tens of thousands displaced, and the prime minister barely said the word manipur while it happened.

• journalists raided. critics' houses bulldozed. activists sitting in jail for years without trial under laws like UAPA. our press freedom ranking has cratered.

• even the petrol is a fight now, ethanol blending pushed through while drivers complain about their engines and get no straight answers.

and through all of it, the PM, who came to power on religious polarisation (americans, sound familiar?), travels abroad for photo ops and has not held one single open press conference in over a decade. not one.

what i'm asking:

if you're not indian: share this. our media mostly won't cover any of it because the big outlets are owned by the same billionaires the government serves. the only reason wangchuk's fast is getting any coverage is people refusing to look away.

if you ARE indian: speak up even if you're comfortable. especially if you're comfortable. join the protests. add to this, correct me, translate it. staying quiet is a choice when nothing in this post touches your life.

india is not "dirty". india was robbed, and it's being robbed again, from the inside this time. but it's also the country where a 59 year old will starve for strangers' kids and 22 million young people will rally behind a party literally named after cockroaches, because cockroaches survive everything.

For anyone reading the headline and not the article: While the prosecution claims the store owner incorrectly believed the black child in question (Cyrus Carmack-Belton) had shoplifted a few bottles of water (no evidence of this supposed shoplifting was found), and the defense claims that the child had threatened the store owners son with a gun (no evidence of Cyrus using the gun or threatening anyone was found), either way the store owner chased the child down the street more than 130 yards, and shot him in the back as he ran away. He chased a black child down the street, and shot him in the back.

Cyrus would have started high school at the end of that summer. He would have been 17 today. He wanted to be a tattoo artist.

Watching through My Adventures with Superman and something I can't stop thinking about is the way Superman and Goku keep copying each other's homework.

Like, it was a whole thing when Dragon Ball Minus rewrote Goku's backstory to make it so that Jor-el and Lara Lor-Van sent Goku to Earth to save him from the destruction of Krypton.

But now MAWS is just straight-up like, "What if Superman was a Saiyan?" The Kryptonians are reimagined as an imperialist race of conquerors using their tremendous powers to slaughter and enslave whole worlds, and much of the conflict around Superman and the Earthlings revolves around whether or not Superman was sent here as a child to wipe the planet out.

I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop but no, the show committed. It's not an exact 1:1 remake of Dragon Ball, of course; It's still a Superman show, and there's a lot going on that isn't about the Kryptonians.

But as far as the space invaders stuff is concerned, Brainiac and Kara play their roles as Frieza and Vegeta respectively pretty well.

Speaking of the other stuff, the other thing I can't help but notice is just how wild it is that they've managed to glue so many disparate pieces of Superman mythos together into a single serialized myth arc. Like, this isn't the kind of series where Superman's out doing good one day and suddenly a freak lab accident happens to fuse a guy to a Kryptonite robot and now Metallo is a thing.

Every Superman character has been stitched together and married to every other Superman character to create a single ongoing narrative. The world of MAWS is very small; Nothing ever happens in the entire universe that isn't in some way connected to Task Force X and the threat of Kryptonian invasion of Earth.

Even the glimpse of the multiverse seen in the Mxyzptlk episode seems to suggest that Superman wipes out the Earth in the name of Saiyan glory in every universe but this one, which is a wild implication to make in a show whose take on Superman is so vastly different from every other Superman product.

And the really funny thing about all this is that the show isn't even about any of this.

My Adventures with Superman is about relationship-building first and foremost. It's about examining the everlasting bonds of love and friendship, both platonic and romantic, that exist between its principal characters. It's a social drama first and a lore-heavy action cartoon second.

Which is what makes all of its lore decisions so wild because. Like. You didn't have to do all this, show. Kara didn't need to be MAWS Vegeta. You didn't need Superman to fistfight the Fortress of Solitude in order to protect Lois and Jimmy from its malevolent designs. You didn't need this whole complex intrigue of Amanda Waller and General Lane arm-wrestling each other over who has the right to kill Superman and accidentally creating Lex Luthor in the process.

You didn't have to explicitly state that our Lois is the shittiest Lois in the multiverse. XD I can't get over that.

All of this background Superman stuff could have just been. Like. Typical Superman stuff.

But someone decided to just go fucking rabid with the Superman stuff and the result is probably the most unique piece of Superman media I have ever seen in my life.
