Shadow of a Doubt (1943) // Gothic Incest: Gender, Sexuality and Transgression by Jenny DiPlacidi
I haven't read this particular book, so I may be repeating what the author states elsewhere:
This is why the Gothic novel in particular also has the villain be an aristocrat- someone whose bloodlines, lands, and wealth are increasingly being held by that same dwindling supply of family members (remember that multiple generations of first or second cousins intermarried freely in the West up until the last 100 years or so). The gene pool almost never refreshes itself with new blood, and in fact it sees new blood as a threat to its power and dominance. The villains are so pathologically obsessed with the idea that their blood is superior that they willing cross the social and moral taboo of incest- sometimes, like in Matthew Lewis' The Monk, it's entirely unwitting, but the villain's sexual attraction to the young woman who turns out to be his sister reinforces the idea that their blood itself is tainted by their obsession.
The villains are also almost always obsessed with using sex as a dominance tool, a physical and psychological MO for maintaining their power and control over everyone else in the novel. It is a pathologizing of the sex drive in general, but also marks any deviation from sexual 'norms'- homosexuality, 'nymphomsnia', kink, sabaritism- as being indicators of moral failure, a sort of scarlet letter that the reader and hero/heroine can point to in hindsight as foreshadowing their villainy. We can point and stare and write them off as unclean without digging into either their motives or the events that shaped them into what they became.
underrated threesome dynamic of herding dog x lamb x wolf
it's about being caught between the grip of somebody who wants to protect you and somebody who wants to devour you and knowing that what they both share is a desire to possess you in your entirety btw

Commissioned from @bog-mommy. Shared with permission.
First off, thanks so much to @bog-mommy for making my dreams come true by taking this commission. They were so amazing to commission from. They listened to all my suggestions and offered a ton of great input, and they kept me really up to date on the process at all times. Truly a wonderful artist to commission, if you are able to.
A few notes:
I was looking up references for weddings in other xianxia dramas, and I noticed that a lot of the fantasy weddings we see don't go with the red you see in traditional Chinese weddings. Even in LBFaD, the Shuiyuntian wedding we see in episode thirty-six is in all white. I thought to ask the LBFaD discord their thoughts on a color scheme for them, and we decided on deep blue and gold. It turned out so gorgeous!
Of course Xiao Lanhua put flowers in her Phoenix Crown, as she said she would, and she managed to get Dongfang Qingcang to wear some as well (not that it was hard, as he'll do most anything she asks).
The gazebo is meant to be the one Xiao Lanhua proposed at. You can imagine them going up to after the ceremony, just to spend some time alone together and take each other in. 💜
hey, can we talk for a second? it’s about your girlfriend. yeah, she’s great. no, yeah, I agree. It’s just that… she seems really devoted to you? Like really devoted. Almost as if you were the sole, fragile line mooring her to the shores of humanity. No, that’s not romant—ugh. Listen. Me and the girls, we’re worried you might be the last good thing to happen to her and that were some tragedy to inevitably befall you, she would tear the gods from their thrones and dye the infinite western seas wine-dark with their ichor. Do you think you could introduce her to a new hobby or something? we don’t want to have to argue over what color “wine-dark” is supposed to be
I love evil women. Maybe some day I’ll marry one and she’ll kill anyone who’s ever said a bad thing about me. Cute

we are morally / philosophically / ideologically opposed but also fundamentally similar in ways that create a unique connection between us
and the most devastating of all: we are actually the same person except one of us is the photonegative. two sides of the same coin
