and a bit of lore drop:
covens, true covens, are essentially a very rare occurence in the woods. Unlike sisterhoods or companies that are formed by oath, true covens are bound by soul. Their spirits quite literally pull them together no matter the distance of their origins (which will mean so much more once i properly flesh out the backstory i have for Hester and the history of magic)
and because bound covens live to wield a greater amount of magic than other creatures (i actually thought this part of the lore through, i can elaborate if u guys want), only one can exist in an entire genration. If a new coven forms before the current one dies out, it begins to ruin the balance. One would have to perish, or if not, break their bond. the latter choice is not the better one, separation is the worst fate for any bound spirit.
