This is going to be a bit long, so I'm sorry in advance.
If you're just getting started with divination, I recommend that you first spend a little bit of time familiarizing yourself with your preferred tools. You specifically mentioned tarot, so we'll run with that.
Look at each card - stare at the artwork and see what calls out to you. Is there anything that you notice? Do the colors feel significant to you? Sit with your cards, hold them, ponder for a bit. Divination is inherently intuitive, meaning that the interpretation can and absolutely will change between readers.
The way you choose to interpret your specific deck is uniquely yours, so it's important you feel comfortable with your deck. Even if you individually look up each and every card, the generic descriptions you find just might not resonate with you. What emotions do specific cards make you feel? Think about it, and then once you feel comfortable and ready, you can actually move onto pulling cards.
This is usually around the time most people will bring up protections, and wards, and the likes. Those things are important, but it's even more important to remember that you control and own the space.
You're inviting guests in. The best thing you can do is make sure your environment is comfortable. I usually light candles, tealights, and incense to get relaxed - but you might prefer something else. The best thing you can do is find somewhere comfortable where you don't have to worry about being disturbed and relax.
Now it's a matter of connecting with the energies you want to communicate with. To start with, do you know these deities? Have you connected with them before? If this is your first time (or if you're still relatively new to this), I recommend giving a couple of offerings.
It doesn't necessarily have to be anything grand - water, incense smoke, a snack, anything you can give works. Invite them into your space and then try to feel them. For this part, I like to close my eyes and meditate. It's totally possible that you don't connect with or feel them immediately, or even on the first try.
Just because you give offerings and call for them doesn't mean a deity will just appear. Sometimes, these things take time. If you don't feel anything, or don't feel too sure - then you don't have to force it. Take your time to really get comfortable, to familiarize yourself with your own energy and the energy that surrounds you. Hopefully that makes sense?
For the sake of this, let's say you successfully connect and now you're ready to start pulling cards. I personally don't read fly-away cards. I shuffle, then pull from the top of the deck. You can pull your cards however works best for you. Some only read the cards that jump out, others shuffle, cut and then pull. Do whatever works best for you.
I prefer to ask a question as I shuffle. It's best to refrain from asking yes/no questions, and stick more to general questions (ex., What message does X have for me? What does X want me to focus on?, etc.)
You can use a spread - but for deity communications, spreads can be really limiting (especially the ones you find online).
Pull three or more cards, and then give them a look over.
What immediately catches your eye? Do the cards make you feel anything in particular? Is there any reoccurring pattern?
Then, try to make sense of each card individually.
Afterwards, is there any common theme that sticks out?
If you're still feeling a bit confused at the end, you can pull another card from the top or look at the card sitting at the very bottom of your deck (called the shadow card).
