Chapter Six
You've taken your fae-protection tonic that Hyunjin gives you when he stops his car at the metro station.
"This seems very un-fae-like," you comment, looking at the graffiti-ed walls and wrinkling your nose at the pungent, nonmagickal scent of urine.
"All kinds, 문외한. We are all kinds." He hands you the familiar blue glowing tonic and you gulp it down, its metallic taste familiar. He offers something else. Not a liquid, but a small compact, and when you open it, it has a thin layer of what seems like pomade.
"For my hair?" you joke, your voice wavers in the stillness of the empty station. You realize, belatedly (your reporter skills are lacking and that will not do), that you don't recognize the name of this stop. It doesn't register in your knowledge of the city.
Another pocket of otherplace, perhaps?
"Rub it on your skin," he says, stopping at the turnstiles. He swipes some of the mixture on his fingers, hovering at your neck. "It will help."
"How?"
He meets your eyes, a first in the last hour or so of preparing for the rescue mission, and driving here. Something about the intimacy you two shared has him different in his manner. He seems…nervous?
You don't dwell too much on your needy words, or desperate kisses. You know it's embarrassing to be so affected by someone you've known for such a short time. And you are…embarrassed.
But not regretful.
So you nod, giving permission. He rubs in the salve carefully. Over where your pulse flutters at his touch, soaking into the skin that his lips tasted only hours ago. He smooths it over your clavicle, fingers dipping under the collar of your shirt.
"This fae…that we seek. Her preferred environment is not earth, but water. Unless humans have evolved in the years I've been at the Court, you still require oxygen from air to live, yes?"
You make a face at him, following him through the turnstile that moves without ticket. His hand hovers over the place to scan a ticket, and lingers there as you walk through. You make note of this, to ask later.
"You can I suppose. You don't need air? I'm telling Min that you are definitely vampires."
Hyunjin hisses at the word. "They are death, undead and extremely boring, nakkeo. Do not make such associations."
You can't help but muffle a laugh at his over dramatic reaction. "Sorry?"
He shakes his head before pausing at the edge of the platform. There are no tracks below. The trench is filled with water, about half a foot high.
"This." He holds up the compact before giving it to you. Your skin has heated at the pomade or his touch. It smells like the lake you used to visit in the summer, when you were a kid and your family enjoyed each other. "Makes your skin able to take oxygen from the water."
"Like a fish?"
"More like aquatic plants. But in reverse, reverse photosynthesis."
"Hyunjin…are you a science nerd?"
He rolls his eyes and jumps lightly to the trench below. "Sit." He pats the edge of the cement.
"Why?"
"Still no trust?"
"You won't tell me things unless I ask." But you do sit. He takes the compact back from you, gathering the salve on his fingers again, this time, he puts it on your ankles and calves. "Are we going to be underwater?" Fear, real fear seizes you. You can swim, but you are very human and the idea of not being able to breathe is terrifying.
"Unlikely." He looks up at you, hand warm on your leg. "Where your skin shows, cover it in this. Where water gets to first." He does your wrists next, methodical, more clinical than seductive. "But, to use a human colloquialism, 'better safe than sorry.'" He slips the compact into your left front pocket as the right is already occupied. "My promise will not be broken again."
You slide to your feet, feeling the water soak through your shoes and socks. And touch your ankles.
"Can you feel it?" He watches you carefully. "Anything?"
The skin is still warm where he applied his balm. But as you stand there for a few seconds, you do notice how you feel a little less tired, a little less like you only had a few hours sleep.
"Yes…I…it feels good. Energizing."
"Oh. I didn't think of that. A nice side-effect." He starts down the tracks (you don't know what else to call them, despite the lack of metal). "Reapply when you can. I do not know the duration of its effectiveness."
That's not worrying.
He, and therefore you too, goes quiet as the journey continues down the long, long tunnels. The water stays around the same depth. There is minimal light from the occasional overhead florescent bulb. Minus the lack of rails and influx of water, it looks like the typical public transport system. It would match any of the stations you've seen in your years in the city.
Was it built by humans and abandoned? Or did the fae make it look unsuspect so humans wouldn't go exploring, curiosity needing satisfaction?
You occasionally hear little scurries and scratches as you walk. You hope it's rats, not something you don't know, some unhinged magickal creature that might swim and bite you, turning you into something you don't recognize.
You're mixing up vampire and fae lore again. You need to do more research.
"How much longer?" you ask, feeling not unlike a tired and whiny kid in the backseat of a car on a very long road trip.
He pauses, letting you catch up with him to stand next to him. You're a little cold, despite that it isn't really cold down here. Not in temperature.
It's atmosphere again. Like the club, with its alluring but cold scent. This is not alluring, but it's frigid.
His warmth is comforting, even in this moment.
"Close," he says before turning to you. You look up, curious. He kisses you softly. "For luck."
"For me?"
"For me." And he continues on his way, leaving you to catch up.
Once the splashes from your hurried steps fades into only quiet moving water, you understand how he knows that you're close.
There are no more scurrying sounds. The animals (or whatever creatures they were) aren't here.
It's the quiet before a storm.
"Hyunjin, my darling!"
The voice booms across the tunnel, vibrating the water at your feet. It's a mesmerizing voice. But your ears prick at its assault.
"Nam-gilnim," he replies, voice less booming.
The tunnel is ending, opening up into an intersection of three tunnels (four if you could the one you and Hyunjin traversed).
Nam-gil (you assume) stands (again you assume because half of her body is submerged in the water filling the space. It's up to your hips, the increase so slight that you only notice it now.
You wish the salve kept you warm.
She is as her voice: stunning in all matters of the word. Hair of light, skin glowing, she almost looks human, though the silver hair is too perfect to be the color of aging. Like the club patrons you saw your first night.
She's too perfect to be real.
"You never come visit me, Hyunjin, my sweet smart boy." She beckons him closer, more to the middle of the cavernous space. He glances at you before moving.
You stay where you are, taking in the surroundings, especially as she is too beautiful to look at for long periods.
And not looking at a fae is probably in your best interest anyway.
There are three other beings here, but you think there might be more. You can't explain why you think that, but the way they—the three— stand, makes you think there are people, or something in line with them, in ranks.
Is Nam-gil a general?
You see that each of the visible guards are at the mouths of the other tunnels. Is Seungmin down one of them? There is no markable difference in the three guards. All the same luminous beings who don't look strong, but you aren't stupid.
She wouldn't have weak guards.
You zero back into the dialogue between her and him.
"You know why I'm here."
"I do. And you brought a lovely gift."
You don't have to look up to know her eyes are on you. It's tempting, almost more than Hyunjin's pull the first night, to meet her gaze.
Is she of the same type of fae as Hyunjin?
You really should have done so much more research.
"She is pretty, yes," Hyunjin says. You look up, startled. You expected to hear a similar 'she is not for you' like last night. "You like her? I thought you had someone already in your vault?"
"You know he isn't enough," she says like a bored housewife. The pronoun makes your heart jump. Seungmin. It has to be Seungmin. "He's only half of what I need. And barely what I want." She shakes out her hair, the light from the glowing orbs that hang from above catching the silver, making it glimmer. "Though this one seems more of his ilk."
It means a lot that she lumps you with Seungmin, who you will always admire for so many of his qualities and gifts.
"She's more fiery, Nam-gilnim. More of what you crave."
"An exchange, my darling boy? Your lovely morsel of a human, for my halfling?" She sniffs, moving closer. You don't move though every part of you screams to flee. To run.
She stops several feet away from you. You don't think she has legs, not with how she moves in the water. Perhaps fins, or a tail?
A mermaid.
"A healthy, full human for one of my kind without even visual confirmation that he's breathing?" Hyunjin sounds harsh, unflinching. You risk a look at him. He meets your gaze. There is no fondness or even heat to comfort you.
He's more frightening than her.
Nam-gil reaches out to touch you.
"Not without confirmation, Nam-gilnim. You like fairness, you like justice."
"I like humans." Her hand is inches away and you can smell her. She doesn't smell like she looks. She smells like the sludge at the bottom of the lake, the mix of dead plants and animals left to decay in stagnant water.
You wrinkle your nose instinctually.
"Oh. Do you not like me, human?" her voice tinkles like bells. It grates. "You won't look at me? Won't see how much I desire you?"
You keep your eyes firmly at where she floats in the water. Waiting for any sudden move.
"She has no voice? Delightful, though disappointing. I do prefer the sounds of a human in distress."
"She's under my thrall."
"You thrall, Hyunjin? I thought you were above that. Just like your kin I have. Too good to take from the cattle what they so eagerly want to give?"
"She is yours if you allow her to see my kin. She will tell me the truth if he is viable or not."
She makes a sound that reminds you of that movie with the girl who wants everything, gets everything and still wants more.
"What shall we do, my beautiful boy, while she does that?"
"I'm sure we can think of something."
You force yourself not to look at him. Not to respond to the temptation in his voice. It's not unlike how he spoke to you that first time. The seduction.
"Go," she says, to you—you believe. "My guard will take you."
You glance up to see her arm gesturing toward the most left tunnel. You start that direction, halted by her hand on your arm.
"She smells a little funny, Hyunjin. Are you sure she's good?"
"I can vouch for it."
"You tasted her?"
"I didn't think you would mind. I would never bring you something that would disappoint."
"Good boy." She lets go and you walk. You don't look up at him as you pass behind him. He said to trust him, to not believe his words, but it's hard not to. Not when he sounds like he does, not when he has tasted you.
The guard floats before you, turning to lead you down the dimly lit tunnel. The water is up to your lower ribs now. Cold and you are shivering, but you hold onto the rucksack with a death grip. As you follow, you slip the compact out of your pocket, smearing what's left on your wrists and on your face.
"What is that?"
The guard's voice is an echo of Nam-gil's. Almost exact, but faded. Not as rich, or alluring. Is it her voice, just reflected in her minions?
"Something to keep me warm." You answer slowly. "I am too weak for what doesn't hinder you." You do your best to imitate how Hyunjin speaks, to sell the idea that you are under his thrall (are you? you wonder sometimes). But the guard doesn't seem as canny as the ruler of this watery place. There's a nod and you both keep walking/swimming down the long corridor.
You try to listen for voices behind you. Whatever Hyunjin might be saying, or doing to keep her interest, to distract her.
But the lilting water covers any sounds that might reach you.
You see a stronger light ahead. Green and sickly.
Your heart starts to beat faster.
You don't know what you expect. A cage, a prison of some kind. But there are no bars, no metal (lack of iron is unsurprising). A body is suspended in the water, the prison a block of water that goes above your head. You don't understand how it can do that. Take form like ice, but still be liquid.
Magic.
You're close enough now to see that it is Seungmin. Held as though there are bindings on his wrists and ankles, but no ropes or chains.
His eyes are closed. You watch his chest and shoulders for movement, for breathing. It takes too long to see, but it's there.
Slight, but there.
"You've seen." The guard says.
"I've seen, but I cannot assess," you say, realizing that your speech does sound a bit like Hyunjin's. "I must make sure for…for my master."
Oh it kills you to say it.
The guard waves you on and you take a breath, praying that the balm does its job, and walk into the wall of water.
You choke, the instinct to gasp and search for air only takes a few second (you have never tried to hold your breath for long). You look back at the guard, but they are unfazed by your struggle.
The salve warms on your skin and your panic lessens. You aren't breathing, but you aren't suffocating.
You decide not to question it.
You move through the water, too slow, but you aren't strong against the weight of it. When you are two feet away, Seungmin's eyes shoot open.
Seconds pass as he stares, as you look him up and down, trying to see if there's visible damage. Either he's fine or it's glamour that keeps you from seeing any injuries.
Through the water, you hear him say your name.
You shake your head, wanting him not to speak. Not to give anything away.
The guard speaks now. "Satisfied?"
"I cannot see all of him, held as he is. Can you release him?"
"Do you think me a fool?"
"No. I think you are of the good folk. I am no threat to you or your mistress."
Seungmin's eyes are boring into you. You would be shocked too. You've been in Hyunjin's presence for maybe forty-eight hours, but his mark on you is apparent.
You'll worry about that later.
The guard, through the water, makes a sound like a sigh, but Seungmin suddenly starts to sink, the invisible bonds undone. You reach for him, grasping his hand and pulling him to you. You hold him close, hands on his back as though looking for evidence of harm.
Neither of you is this touchy-feely with the other and under different circumstances you would laugh at how stiff he is in your arms.
"Play along," you whisper in his ear. To the guard. "May I bring him out? I can only see so much in here, my human eyes are not as strong as yours."
Flattery gets you everywhere.
The guard acquiesces and you pull Seungmin to the half-water. When you both reach air, you breath deep as he does.
"Weak," the guard scoffs.
"Indeed," you agree before lifting your eyes up to look fully at the guard. "May I bring him to show my master?"
"That was not the agreement."
"Please ask your mistress."
You feel Seungmin's trembling hand in yours. He has to stand on his on right now, and you think that it's a struggle for him. His hand is too cold for him. Too cold for anyone, half-fae or not.
The guard closes their eyes to communicate with Nam-gil, something that Hyunjin had told you about. It's not necessary, but it helps the lesser fae connect with their lieges.
You let go of Seungmin's hand a second after, pulling out the bottle from your other pocket. This elixir is not the same as the one you've ingested. It's red, a brown-red. You pop the cap, stand in front of Seungmin so nothing splashes on him.
And empty the bottle on the guard.
The eyes open, the mouth opens, but no sound comes out. You make sure the liquid hit the guard's throat first.
Iron. Liquid iron.
You grab Seungmin's hand and pull him from the guard, who writhes in agony, mouth opened in a silent scream. It is cruel and awful. You hate that you did it.
But you are not regretful.
You hear a high shriek, a horrible ear-piercing sound, but you keep moving, trudging through the water with Seungmin who drags, but does his best to keep up.
When you make it back to the main space, the water—once dark and cold—is now a color of that green light, sickly. The water is tainted with blood. Not human blood.
Fae blood.
Nam-gil lies on the water, unmoving. The other guards are fleeing, the ones you could see, and the invisible ones, now visible, scramble down the tunnels, away from the carnage in the middle of the intersection.
Hyunjin stands in the water, a sword in hand (he brought a sword? how did you miss that?). His shoulders are hunched over, his body's movement shaking from heavy breathing and something else.
You don't know what else.
"Hyunjin!" you shout, alerting him. His head shoots up and his eyes find yours. You step back, the force of that gaze jolting.
"Back the same way," he shouts back, heading toward the tunnel you came through. You move, your progress impeded by Seungmin, who is getting slower and slower.
You open your mouth to encourage your partner, or to demand Hyunjin's assistance, but he's already at your side. The sword is gone, there is a roaring sound from behind that worries you . Hyunjin lifts Seungmin and sets him over one shoulder.
"The water is enchanted," he says, huffing as you both push through. "It will destroy the remains of her territory."
You have a million questions about this, but the salve must not be working as well, because the energy you had earlier is gone.
So you keep moving, following Hyunjin with Seungmin danging over his shoulder. The roar, when you look back is rushing water, small tsunamis on their way down the other tunnels.
Hyunjin reaches back to grab you by the hand, pulling you faster than you could ever go through water.
"I am unsure how far her territory reaches, we must move faster."
You press on, the water that was once at your knees when you arrived is rising. You can't think about what could happen if you don't get past her territory. You don't think that Seungmin is too pale for words. You don't think that Hyunjin has a sword.
You don't think about the pain on the guard's face when you attacked them.
Minutes pass, maybe hours, but the water retreats. It touches your waist, then your thighs, then your ankles.
Prompt: With omegas completely removed from society, they needed their own communities and institutions to grow. All your life you had lived and gone to school alongside your fellow omegas, and orphaned alphas. You had managed to keep yourself together, but now at the university level, keeping your secret had grown impossible. You had to face your fears and make friends with an alpha eventually, and now was the time.
“Y/n… I know you’re tired, but you need to eat.”
Chan was on the edge of the bed, leaning over you and trying to gently coax you awake. Unsurprisingly you didn’t wake, clearly dead tired. The others told him how things had been in his absence. You did well to hold yourself together, but once he was gone longer than the two weeks you began to fall apart. He was worried when you had collapsed in his arms, and the explanation just made him feel guilty. He didn’t want to be gone for so long, but in his situation it was unavoidable. Even if you weren’t waking up, you were groaning and shifting, so it was awake enough in his mind. With ease he picked you up in his arms, carrying you to the dining table and sitting you down.
The motion and lights really did start to wake you, and the smell of food was enticing. You yawned and stretched your limbs, beginning to rub the sleep from your eyes. You were still tired, but you should probably eat something. Apparently Felix had been cooking, glad to have everyone back home at last. Your favorite soup had been prepared and set before you in a bowl. In your sleepy state you’d likely still need help, and Chan had no problem spoon feeding you. He made sure you had every drop and drank plenty of water before taking you back to his room. You had a lot of rest to catch up on. Although he knew you needed comfort as well. He sat you down on the bed and took off his shirt, helping you change into it. You smiled lazily and took in a deep breath of his scent.
“… thanks…”
“Y/n, I know you still need to rest, but we should take you down to see the doctor, just to be safe and make sure everything is alright.”
“… hm… okay…”
“Good. We’ll go later after you get more sleep.”
Chan tucked you in, staying by the bedside until you fell asleep. He didn’t leave the room, wanting to keep an eye on you and having his own things to catch up with. It wasn’t until later in the day when you woke up on your own that he believed it was a good time to take you down to see the doctor. You were still a bit sleepy, but more awake and understood you did need to get checked out after last weeks ordeal. Usually you didn’t like going to the doctor, but you weren’t going to upset Chan, and a free piggy-back ride was worth it as well.
Minseok treated things like routine check-up. He took your vitals, giving you a minor physical examination and drawing some blood. Within minutes he was talking about your lack of nutrition, and how your health has been on the decline. Usually you’d get scolded for such things, but he understood the circumstances. For now it was best to get lots of rest and to eat light meals until you could handle more. A few tests were also going to be run, but Minseok thought the results would come back fine. If there was anything he needed to discuss with you he’d have you come down, but for now you were free to go. He just told you to at least come visit him on your own once more before the start of the fall semester.
With that done you returned to the dorm, getting another ride from Chan. Besides the obvious you were alright, and it was good to have confirmation on that. So now it was back to bed for you, specifically Chan’s bed. For the most part you were resting well, and even though Chan was back things didn’t just return to normal in an instant. At least once a night you’d wake up in a panic, thinking Chan was still gone. If he wasn’t at your side he was at his desk working on something, but when you woke up like that he was quick to reassure you he was there and that everything was okay. You felt a bit silly over the nightmares, thinking he was gone again, but he assured you that he was here with you, and he wasn’t going anywhere any time soon. Chan crawled into bed to hold you, keeping your hands in his.
“I’m sorry for being gone… I know it was unavoidable, but I didn’t know it would get this bad.”
“… if you knew… would it have changed things?”
“Maybe. I’ll do better next time, I promise.”
“Next time? What do you mean?”
“Summer training is a yearly thing until graduation.”
“What? Are you serious?”
“I’m afraid so.”
“I don’t like that.”
“I know, but it’s necessary.”
You were starting to hate that word, especially because you didn’t know what this necessary training was. Moreso given the fact Chan’s scent was different now. It wasn’t a major difference, but something you’ve noticed. Of course having him and having his scent back was a great comfort, but this change was making you curious.
“Chan.”
“Hm?”
“What happened to you?”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re… different…”
“Chan chuckled. “I assure you, I’m the same.”
“I wasn’t talking about that… I meant your scent. You smell different.”
“I highly doubt that. I was gone for so long you must have forgotten my scent. I’m sorry about that too, I can’t imagine how you felt with traces of me fading away.”
“That’s not…”
That possibility hadn’t occurred to you until now. You only had a weird feeling about the others, but with Chan you could smell the difference. Perhaps you just didn’t remember it properly to begin with, any of their scents in fact.
“Come on now, you should go back to sleep. I’ll turn in for the night too.”
Chan pulled you under the covers, snuggling against you properly. Your mind was still on his scent, but you were feeling sleepy and ultimately you drifted off. Being in his arms, surrounded by his scent was comforting and helped you sleep for the rest of the night.
♥♥♥♥♥
It took a few days, but you soon regained your energy and returned to your normal self. For the most part you had forgotten about your suspicions of the alphas’ scents, just glad to have them all back. Although the topic would come up again. During a movie night you were snuggling against Hyunjin when you took in a deep breath of his scent. It was familiar and comforting, but you caught a hint of something else. Beneath his usual scent there was this underlining numbness. You couldn’t really describe it, but it was almost medicinal, like something you would take to ease your worries.
Logically, that’s what an alphas scent could do to you, but there were two problems here. Once again you were certain this wasn’t part of his scent before, and on top of that, this change was similar to what you had been picking up on from Chan’s scent. You knew everyone was supposed to have a unique scent, but these two sharing something similar added to this feeling that something was off. Maybe you were just making things up, so you moved closer to Hyunjin, snuggling against him and burying your face in the crock of his neck. You were tickling him and making him laugh, but he didn’t think anything was wrong.
“Well, aren’t you adorable.”
“Hyunjin.”
“Hm?”
“… what did you do during that summer training?”
“Just some physical tests and stuff, nothing you need to worry about. I came back in one piece.”
“But you have to go back next summer…”
As soon as those words left your lips Hyunjin got tense, but only for a moment. You certainly noticed, but didn’t mention it.
“Yeah, it’s necessary, but you did well with us being gone for a bit.”
“I don’t like it though.”
“I know, I know, we miss you too.”
You didn’t really get any direct answers from Hyunjin, but your suspicions returned. Just to satisfy your own curiosity you found ways to check on the other alphas’ scents. They didn’t think you were doing anything weird, but you were confirming your own theory. Beneath all their scents there was something new. You really didn’t think this was your imagination, but you weren’t sure what to do. None of the alphas were really all that different personality wise, maybe just a bit more strict and cold ever once in a while. It wasn’t much but you definitely felt like whatever that training was, it changed them, even if just a bit.
As the summer was coming to an end you made sure to visit Minseok so he could check up on you. Since it would be quick and simple you went on your own, letting the others know where you would be in case they looked for you. The tests that had been run before all came back with good results, so there was nothing to discuss there. Minseok was very happy to see you were in much better condition and basically back to your usual self. This really should have been a quick visit, but since you had some time with Minseok you wanted to ask him some questions. In your free time you had been researching scents, but there wasn’t much you found that you didn’t already know. So maybe a doctor had some answers.
“Minseok, could I ask you something?”
“Sure. What is it?”
“Is it possible… for one’s scent to change?”
“Well, yes. Your scent basically matures and changes when you come of age.”
“Besides that… could someone’s scent change?”
“A change in scent is rare and uncommon, but perhaps possible under extreme pressure.”
“Like a traumatic experience?”
“Yes, that could-” Minseok took a moment before moving closer and taking your hands in his. “What happened to you, happened before you came of age. I suppose it could have affected your scent, and it was meant to be a bit different to what it is now, but what your scent is won’t change anymore, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“I understand, thank you.”
You returned to the dorm, Minseok’s words ringing in your head. An answer like that didn’t really make you feel better, and you really couldn’t keep all this to yourself anymore. So you decided to find Chan and confront him about this once again. You found him in his room, knocking and asking if he had time to talk. He welcomed you inside, letting you get comfortable.
“So, what’s up?” Chan wondered. “I know something has been bothering you for a while, but I wanted to wait until you were ready to talk.”
“It’s not anything new really… I just… what happened? What kind of training did you go through? What did they do to you?”
“It’s nothing you need to worry about.”
“But I am worried.”
“I’m fine. We’re all fine. You’re overthinking things.”
“Liar.”
“Y/n-”
“I know something drastic happened cause your scent has changed. It’s just a small difference, but it’s different nonetheless.”
“My scent isn’t different. You must be misremembering. I was gone for longer than I meant to be and I know you were missing me dearly and-”
“That’s not true. Maybe at first I thought so too, but do you know why I’m so certain of this?”
“…”
“Cause I had to let you in, all of you. After what happened to me I avoided alphas, I hated their scents, I hated them, but I couldn’t live like that forever. Not here. So I had to let my guard down. I had to know your scent intimately so I could know who to trust, who to rely on.” You took a breath. “I know your scent Chan, and I know it’s different. One’s scent doesn’t just change, not unless some major trauma occurs. So I will ask again, what happened to you?”
“…”
The silence in the room spoke volumes. You had tried to reason with yourself that there was nothing different, that nothing was wrong, but then you had your own realization. This was bothering you so much cause you knew it was true. Chan was the first alpha you actually got to know, the first you let in. His scent was important to you, so you knew it better than you realized. It was different now, and the others were different in a similar way. Something happened, and it hurt not knowing.
“Y/n, it’s nothing to worry about. My job is to look after you. I’m perfectly fine and capable of doing just that.”
“We both know that’s not true. The more you keep avoiding the more I worry. How are you supposed to take care of me if I’m like this? If you’re the one making me worried? Chan, please, just tell me what-”
“I can’t!” Chan snapped, startling you. “I can’t tell you, and I won’t. You don’t need to know what happened.”
You weren’t sure Chan had ever raised his voice at you, let alone snap. You immediately fell silent, a little nervous being in the room now. He quickly realized what he had done, taking a breath to calm himself.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to yell.” Chan cautiously stepped closer and took your hands in his. “Look, the training was intense and hard. It wasn’t something any of us expected or could prepare for. It was crazy… but I got through it all cause I knew I had to keep my promise of coming back and taking care of you. I wasn’t going to leave you alone.”
“… chan…”
Even with such vague words, you could feel this heaviness in his tone. Something big happened, but he seemed adamant about not telling you. Without realizing tears had started to form. Chan noticed and reached up to wipe them away.
“Sh, sh, this is something I can’t tell you without getting into trouble, both of us really, and there won’t be forgiveness for this.”
“… please chan… you…”
“I came back and I’m okay. That’s all that matters.”
Chan pulled you into his embrace, cradling your head. Even with the change his scent was still a comfort, but your heart ached with worry. He was very serious about this, and you were seeing a new side of him too.
“I don’t want you to know, okay, please let that be enough.”
“… okay… just, I’m here for you too…”
“Thank you.”
You both remained quiet and in each other’s arms for a while. Despite everything, you really didn’t think you could let this go, not after all this. It was going to bother you even more now, but you were gonna have to figure things some other way.

Warnings: Explicit sex (warnings under the cut). Plus size rep. Demon summoning/witchcraft. Mentions of: character starvation as punishment, death (previous life) and imprisonment.
MINORS DO NOT INTERACT - 21+ ONLY BECAUSE THIS IS NASTY STUFF - Only you can control your media consumption - This is a work of fiction, nothing is true. I am delulu as a solulu to this world.
It has been two weeks since he summoned you in the basement of that library. Unless a contract is signed, it is a one and done thing but that night, no contract was signed. While you got your fill and your taste of Jisung, he has not given himself over to you fully just yet.
You hadn’t planned on coming to him in flesh once again, maybe slipping into his dreams but your tea was made and your name whispered in a soft plea. "Please, I need you."
Instead of showing up during the witching hour like you did previously, you decided to show up after his summoning was complete.
"Han Jisung."
The sound of your voice has him shifting on his bed, his cock already hardening in his sweatpants. His eyes fall closed when his next inhale fills him with your scent. This time, a sweet clean linen that is catered solely for Jisung. His soft whine when he smells you makes his head fall back between his shoulders. His hair still fluffy from drying it after his shower and his glasses on his face.
Allowing yourself to materialize, you step up to his bed. "Don't move, handsome." Your fingers slip into the curls and tug his head to the side softly. His whimper followed by the image of his hands fisting in his sheets, makes you smirk before your lips lean down and tease them over his neck.
The grounding hand in his hair is the only thing that signals Jisung's brain that you are actually here. Your lips ghosting over his neck and the way the nails of the hand not in his hair lightly scrape over his jaw, sending goosebumps and raising the hair over his body, could easily be confused as a daydream.
One that he has had many, many times before.
His hands move to your hips, not to move but just to verify that you are real. "You came." His voice is a relief but also disbelief. "I didn't think I would see you again."
"You called."
"You'll be here if I call again?"
"Don't make a habit of it, Ji." The nickname slipping from you before you have a chance to stop it. He melts and turns his eyes up to see yours. A soft gasp leaves him when he notices the endless dark pits that have replaced the vibrant purple, which he finally placed as the color of purple irises.
Your lips find his in a searing kiss, both of you moaning when your tongue roll together to taste one another. It's been two weeks since you have been allowed to feed, so when you get your first taste of his sexual energy, you're climbing into his lap, desperate for more.
Jisung is more than happy to give in for whatever you need. One hand around your waist, he scoots back against the wall so he can pull you closer and make sure you are comfortable on his lap. Having your weight over him again makes his hands grip you a little harder and his groans into your mouth a little louder. You pull back from the kiss and your head tilts back, your eyes flashing that bright beautiful color.
"Fuck, Jisung," you exhale and Jisung can see the small cloud of vapor leaving your lips.
“Holy shit.” He looks up and sees how dark your eyes still are. The brighter the purple, the fuller you are. “What did they do to you?”
You shake your head and cup his face softly, "please," your voice is soft and has a tone that flips a switch in his head.
Quickly, he moves so you're on your back, your head on his pillow, and he is between your legs. "I'm so sorry," his lips meet yours once again, groaning when your legs wrap around his waist and you pull him in tighter. Expertly, you get his sweats down around his knees, one less layer between you. His hard cock is against the lace covering your core and you can feel him throb with his need for you.
A sad, hopeless sound leaves you as his energy feeds you. Normally, you would be making your partner come undone under you but Jisung taking the lead in his own pleasure is having the same effect, if not a more potent feeding. When his hips start to roll against yours, he breaks from the kiss and rests his forehead on your chest, letting his body guide him.
"You feel so good under me, baby girl." His lips trace over your collarbones as one of his hands shifts down and shoves the satin hem of your dress up and out of his way. He sit up on his knees between your thighs and pulls his plain black shirt off before looking down and watching his cock leak onto the lace covering you.
Your head tilts back against his pillows and you moan softly. “Fuck,” you're panting and Jisung can see some color coming back to your skin. A sick, twisted pleasure comes over Jisung knowing he’s able to take care of you. The succubus he summoned at first purely out of curiosity and brought back because he simply missed you.
Jisung slides his hands over your thighs, pressing his fingers deep just to feel your skin give before moving to your hips. “Is this what you looked like before?”
You nod and lick over your bottom lip, “Mostly. Women in those times were fuller figured. I tend to stick close to that but tailor it to whatever the person who summoned me desires."
"Nothing but this ever again." His dark chocolate eyes take you in spread out below him and you arch slightly when you basically get force fed due to how strong his want for you is. Especially when his eyes take in the soft curve of your hips and your stomach. His hands move up to caress your skin before gripping your waist.
"Jisung, please."
"Tell me what you need."
"I need you to touch me."
"Fuck, okay." He leans down and takes your lips once more, loving the sound you make and how you melt into the bed. One second you were in a red, satin slip dress under him and the next, you hear the sound of ripping as the garment parts from the slit by your left hip. Satin isn't necessarily hard to rip but the force is not something you would have expected from Jisung.
He breaks away from the kiss and looks down at you, still wrapped in the ruined fabric of your slip, your full breasts heaving as you pant for breath. Your perfect lips are kissed swollen and red. A light flush has come to your cheeks and while your eyes are not back to their regular shade, they are getting closer. Meeting your eyes from under his bangs, his smile is feral and you know that you are no longer in control of the evening.
It almost makes cum on the spot. Especially when you see his biceps flexing and the veins inflamed from the effort.
His eyes still on you, Jisung leans down and circles your nipple with the tip of his tongue. His hand moves to press your thighs open, letting him slot his cock tighter against you. The sensations of his mouth with the way his cock knocks against your clit makes your head spin. You're arching up and crying out as your fingers thread into his hair, tugging softly on the curls.
“Good job, baby. Feels so good.” His whimper at the praise once feeds you more.
"Yeah? This is okay?" His need for encouragement reminds you he's never actually done much of this before. Regardless of how he is in control, he is still very new and all he wants to do is make sure you feel as good as you make him.
"I’m supposed to be the one making you fall apart, not the other way around.”
"So it's working? Good." With one final, sinister lick to your nipple, his lips close around it, sucking softly. You cry out as his hips continue to cant against yours, the angle devastating on your clit. His thumb and index play with your other peaked bud, taking your breast fully into his hand shortly after you squirm more below him.
His beautiful brown eyes turn up to you when you feel his fingers dancing over your inner thighs, slick with your arousal. His eyes shine as if he is asking permission. Jisung has decided that he wants to make you fall apart before you ruin him for the night but he will never touch you without your consent.
To him, even princesses of Hell deserve to have their consent given.
“Yes, Ji." As soon as the 'y' left your lips, his index finger is tracing up your slit, a low whine sounding. You gasp but feel your lips curve into a smile as your fingers card through his hair once more. "Feel how good you make me, baby boy? I'm soaked all for you."
A low sound comes from Jisung and his touch becomes harder, more insistent as his fingers spread your slick and opens your folds. He learned during that first night a couple of the things that you like and it seems he committed them to memory. His index and pinky hold your lips open as his thumb applies slow circles of pressure to your opening.
Teasing and spreading you open he learned were infallible ways to make your pussy weep for him. He could hear before he felt how you started dripping over his digits. Paired with the soft suckling on your breasts, you're very quickly rocking your hips down and begging for more.
Succubi don't beg unless their partners demand it.
Jisung never demands anything but your time. This is just another example of why this could end terribly.
With your thighs shaking around his hips, your fingers in his hair, and your beautiful voice calling his name, Jisung finds himself very close to cumming in his pants. It wouldn't be the first time.
"Jisung, please, baby boy." Your voice has a soft cry to it that makes his stomach flutter. Turning his beautiful brown eyes up to your face, he watches as his thumb replaces his index finger. You're spread wider, his fingers slip down to fully expose how you're clenching around nothing, desperate for him to fill you.
"Fuck, I love how you say my name." His hips rock against the bed as his middle and index finger slip into your entrance with ease. Earning him another cry of his name, he finds himself restkess. Shifting back to his knees, Jisung watches his fingers move in and out of you, pulling more of your arousal from you, coating his fingers and spreading it over your lower lips. "So fucking perfect."
You don't get a chance to answer before his mouth is on you. As if on instinct his tongue is taking you down to you bare fibers, piece by piece. Stripping you until you're nothing but feeling and sensations.
"You're fucking lying if you say this is the first time you have eaten pussy, Han Jisung." Your fingers are in his hair and your eyes are focused on where he is devouring you.
He shakes his head, his lips still around your clit, making you arch and let your eyes close. The feelings he is pulling from you as well as the way he is feeding you is sending you very quickly to an orgasm. Slowly, you feel one of his fingers prodding at your entrance before easily slipping in due to how much slick has left you.
Not to mention the drool from Jisung.
"Oh my god, holy shit," you're panting and tugging on his hair.
Jisung groans against you and slides another finger into you, moving his other to your thigh, holding you open as he devours you like you are his last meal. "You taste so fucking good." His fingers quickly move to your gspot and grinds them against it.
The next sound that leaves you is guttural and if you had any shame, you might feel it. You don't even get a chance to warn him before you are cumming around his fingers, your walls tightening so hard his fingers are unable to move. Jisung groans into you as he moves with you, chasing your release as it squirts out of you and over his chin, dripping down his neck.
Your fingers relax in his hair for a split second before tightening once again, his tongue once again licking broad stipes up your swollen sex. The fingers on your thighs hold you in a bruising grip to keep you in place. The hand that was inside of you is missing. It doesn't take you long before you come back to your senses and notice the soft whimpers that come from Jisung as he is approaching and overstimulated orgasm.
"Sungie, please," you whimper as your hips start rolling down. "Please not on the sheets again."
A low sound leaves him as he turns his head and mouths open kisses to your thighs, licking any remnants of your release. "Where?"
"Inside. If you're ready."
"Please?" It comes out in a cry as you watch his hips chase after his hand once he removes it from his shaft. The head of his cock dripping onto the bed, red and desperate for another release. He lays back and moves his hands under his head, not to be cocky, but because you have told him to keep them there more than once.
The whiny, submissive Jisung is back.
You sit up and kneel to the side of his body, strung tight and so close to breaking. You lean down and place your lips to his, hoping a kiss will help him relax into the bed for a moment. The kiss is a plea. An unchoreographed twisting of tongues and teeth as Jisung fully gives in and lets you take the lead.
Kissing down his jaw, over his collarbone and nipping and sucking at the tattoo at his collarbone. You move to straddle him, settling your soaked core just above his waistline, letting his cock rest against your ass. "Hands on my hips before you rip your pillow, baby."
His hands fly to your hips and your smile as they grip, then release. Grip then release. Like he can't decide what he needs. "Please sit on it." His hands on your hips flex once again.
Shifting up and back, you now sit just below his cock, the flushed length of him stopping just under your belly button. "Sit on what, baby boy?" You watch him take in a glimpse of how the fit is going to be before you slide forward slowly, the soaked heat of you glides over the throbbing line of his cock . "On this?" His groan as the small stimulation makes you gasp softly. "Oh my Jisungie."
"Fuck me, please, before I lose my fucking mind," your eyes flashing purple from the way he is continuing to feed you as his back bows off the bed and his nails drag down the back of your thighs.
"Are you sure? This is big so I want you to be positive." You sense his hesitation so you lean forward, cupping his cheeks softly. It shocks you, the fact that you care about this man. Usually, by now, you would have sat on his cock and made him beg for you to stop.
When his eyes open to meet yours, that soft glimmer in them that you have come to really enjoy seeing. You smile warmly, "I'll do anything you want, I just don't want you to regret it."
Your eyes are finally back to their normal, iris shade and the color has returned. Releasing one of your thighs, his hand comes up to cup your cheek, his thumb stroking over the skin. "I'll never regret anything if it's with you."
For the first time since you died, you feel something aside from the standard lust, shame, or anger that usually accompanies your summoning. Jisung makes you feel something deeper, something that you have not felt in centuries.
You feel loved.
Surging forward, you crash your lips into his knowing this is about to be the last time you will see him. You break apart from the kiss and get a quick, "I'm so sorry, Jisung," you're voice actually breaks on his name.
Then you're pulled back down.
Shoved back into your windowless, colorless, three sizes too small for you box.
"30 years. Maybe you'll remember who the fuck you are."
Closing your eyes, you curl in on yourself. Settling in for what will be the longest punishment you have been given in your time as a Succubus.
Stray Kids rule the underground like they rule the charts, with ruthless precision and silent unity. “I don’t like the new transfer student.”
“Eric… you haven’t even met them, no one has.”
“And yet they’re already bothering you.”
“They’re in our class, Eric, and I’m class president. Part of my responsibilities is helping students, especially new ones. You don’t have to come along.”
“Yes I do.”
“You’re not my VP.”
“I could be.”
“Not with your grades, Eric.”
Earlier that morning your homeroom teacher had informed you about a new transfer student joining your class. They asked if you could go up to the teacher’s office and welcome them, as well as show them around and help the get situated. Of course you agreed, but as soon as you were out the door Eric was right behind you. The two of you had been best friends for years now, and he had a tendency to follow you wherever you went. When you got to the teacher’s office you saw a boy waiting outside. You put on your best smile and walked up to them, holding out your hand.
“You must be the new transfer student. Welcome, my name is y/n, your class president. I’m here to show you around and help you with anything you might need.”
“Oh, thank you.” The boy shook your hand. “My name is Hyunjae, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“And I’m Eric.”
“Yes, this is one of your classmates. He tagged along to meet you. Shall I show you around your new school.”
“I’d like that.”
You happily showed Hyunjae around the school, pointing out where classes were and other important locations. Eric added colorful commentary, and you kept having to give him looks so he’d behave. Once the first bell rang you all returned to your homeroom, Hyunjae properly introducing himself to the rest of the class. From there the things went on as usual, and he seemed prepared. Although you did take a moment in between classes to let him know he could come to you with help for anything.
“You didn’t need to tell him that.”
“Eric, he’s the new student, and what I said applies to everyone. It’s my duty as class president.”
“Ah, so you’ll help me with my homework?”
“I already do that.”
“As my friend, not as the class president. I wonder what she’s like.”
“Strict. You wouldn’t survive her. So count yourself lucky.”
“I suppose I am. Just promise me you won’t tutor that new guy without me there.”
“What is your problem with him?”
“I haven’t figured it out yet.”
“Do you need to vet everyone around me?”
“Of course! You’re a brilliant woman with a bright future ahead of you. I can’t allow just anyone to be your friend. What if they take advantage of you?”
You couldn’t help but laugh. “What about you?”
“I’ve been your friend for years, you know me. I’d never do anything to hurt you.”
“You better keep your word.”
Eric was always weary of new people around you until he got to know them and was sure they were good people. During free period Eric went out to play soccer with some classmates. He excused himself to use the restroom. As he was about to walk in he saw Hyunjae on the phone and quickly hid himself. No one else seemed to be around so he carefully creeped closer to listen in.
“I’m settling in just fine, so you don’t have to worry… I already found my target, they basically walked into my life… yeah, although I might have a bit of a problem… it’s just this other person that seems glued to their side… I’ll take care of it and keep an eye on the target… I’ll keep you updated.”
Eric couldn’t believe what he was hearing, immediately worrying about you. Whoever this new transfer student was, he was bad news, and you seemed to be in danger. Eric quickly ran off trying to find you. He thought you might be in the homeroom, but that wasn’t the case. His classmates didn't know where you were either so he ran around the school looking for you until someone told him you were outside in the bleachers. He made his way over as fast as possible, although when he reached you he needed a second to catch his breath.
“Y/N! Y/N!”
Eric had doubled over for a moment before looking up. Just as he was told you were sitting on the bleachers outside, but what he failed to notice was that you weren’t alone. Hyunjae was at your side, glancing over but focusing on the book in his hands.
“Yes, Eric? What is it? If you were running around looking for me it must be important.”
“It is… just… can I talk to you alone?”
“Sure. Excuse me for a moment, Hyunjae.”
“Of course.”
You stepped down to meet Eric who grabbed your arm and pulled you away. You went a long with it but we're very confused.
“Is everything okay, Eric?”
“Why are you with Hyunjae?”
“He asked for help with some of the material. Now what-”
“You said you wouldn’t be alone with him.”
“Eric I promised no such thing, now tell me what’s going on.”
“Okay, I need you to listen to me, like really listen.”
“Eric-”
“The new transfer is bad news. I overheard him talking about finding his target at school and how he’d report on them and-”
“Eric, do you hear yourself?”
“I’m being serious! I heard all of this and-”
“Were you spying on him so you could find something? What if he was talking to his parents?”
“You’re in danger, y/n, stay away from him.”
“Eric… are you jealous?”
“What? No, this has-”
“It’s kinda cute, but regardless, I can’t just stay away from a classmate. So relax, nothing bad is gonna happen, okay?”
“But-”
“Eric, please.”
“Fine… fine…”
“Thank you.”
Eric watches you go back to Hyunjae, and he couldn’t help but glare. If you weren’t gonna stay away from him then he needed to change tactics. When the bell rang everyone returned to the classroom. Usually Eric sat next to you, but he grabbed his things and plopped himself down next to Hyunjae. The boy watched him curiously, but Eric only met his eyes and gave him a hard look.
“I’m on to you.”
“Uh, okay… whatever.”
Eric figured the only way he could keep Hyunjae away from you was to do it himself. So despite being suspicious, he decided to befriend the transfer student. He acted friendly and offered to introduce him to other students and hang out with him in between classes. For the most part his plan seemed to work, that is until homework was involved. He wasn’t as smart and couldn’t really answer his questions. In that case he asked the class president for help, but Eric was always there to make sure nothing else besides studying happened.
🖤
“How do you think you did on the test?”
“Don’t remind me.” Eric whined. “I don’t want to think about it until the results are out.”
“Alright, but you better not try to lie to me about your grades.”
“I bet you got the top score.”
“Don’t say ridiculous things.”
“But you always do.”
“Still.”
You tended to stay late after school for studying, and Eric stayed with you to keep you company. Also because you lived in the same apartment complex so it was nice to walk home together at the end of the day. Although this time around something happened that he wasn’t happy about.
“Oh, Hyunjae, what are you doing here?”
As you both got to your apartment you noticed Hyunjae walking towards the entrance with a box in hand. He seemed surprised to see you both as well.
“Y/n, Eric, what a surprise. Uh, well, I’m moving into this apartment complex. It’s close to school and my family approved, saying it was good for me.”
“Wow, what a coincidence. We live here too.”
“Really? I was looking at a few places and this one just seemed the best. I’m glad I chose it.”
“I guess we’ll be seeing more of each other now.”
“ I suppose so. I’m still moving in so I’ll let you go. Have a good night.”
“You too.”
You started walking towards the door but Eric was still stuck in place. He could not believe what he had just heard.
“Eric… Eric!”
After getting no response you went over and grabbed Eric’s arm, dragging him inside. He seemed completely frozen until you got into the elevator and the doors shut. Then he leaned back against the wall.
“What the fuck… out of all the places…”
“What is it now?”
“Why did he choose here?”
You chuckled. “You really are jealous of another guy being around me, aren’t you?”
“It’s not that!”
“If you say so.”
You reached your floor and wished Eric a good night, telling him to stop worrying about others and go to sleep. That was easier said than done, but after some restless pacing he felt tired. This wouldn’t be too much of a problem. He was still near you and could keep doing his job to keep Hyunjae away from you, he just now needed to do it after school too. That might be exhausting but he had to wait and see how things played out. Come morning he realized he had forgotten about another issue. When he stepped out of the apartment he saw you and Hyunjae waiting for him at the front of the building. Of course you both walked together every morning too, and it seemed that someone new would be joining. Eric made sure to stay in the middle, despite Hyunjae talking the whole way to school.
“What’s the area around here like?”
“Peaceful.” You answered. “There’s nothing much to worry about.”
“Cool. I see I really did make a good choice.”
“Yeah, and we can all walk to school together and-”
“You know there’s a nice snack stand on the way to school.” Eric cut in. “How about we get some for breakfast, my threat.”
Eric certainly did not want to wait around and walk home with him, so he had to make sure that didn’t come up. Or else it might end with plans being made, and he wasn’t eager for this trio to hang out. When you got to school though you parted ways as you had class president things to take care of, so Eric and Hyunjae made it to class together. They sat down and got their things, although Eric wound up staring at his desk mate for a moment, trying to figure out what to do now. It was annoying, and felt kinda suspicious, that he now lived in the same apartment building as you.
“What?”
“I don’t like you.”
“Yeah, I know. You’ve made that rather clear.”
“Huh?”
“The fake friendliness and all that. I don’t care either way, it doesn’t change anything. So let’s just keep up the charade.”
“You-”
The bell rang and the homeroom teacher entered, cutting the conversation short. Eric just let it go for now anyway. He thought he had been doing a good job of keeping you safe, but this was gonna complicate things. If he went to you again you’d call him jealous and crazy, so he needed to gather some evidence to prove his point. He was wondering how he’d do that when he passed by an empty classroom and saw Hyunjae inside. He quickly hid himself and got close to the open door, peeking in to see Hyunjae on the phone.
“Everything has been quiet on my end, although I sense something is off… I can’t quite figure it out, but I’ll be cautious and report if anything comes up.”
This was what Eric needed. Twice now he had heard Hyunjae making mysterious phone calls, and he really didn’t think it was his parents. If he could steal Hyunjae’s phone he might be able to get some answers. The problem now was how he would accomplish this. So for the rest of the day he kept an eye on Hyunjae. Most students always kept their phone on them, but during free periods a lot of the guys put their phones away so they didn’t break them while playing, and Hyunjae was no exception.
Eric saw him put his phone away and then told his friends he’d join them in a bit. He waited until all the other students were gone and then went to Hyunjae’s locker. Of course it was locked, but he knew of a way in. He checked his surroundings again and went over to your locker. He knew your code and also knew you had the master key in there too. He managed to retrieve it without issue and then opened Hyunjae’s locker. The phone he was looking for was right in front of it and he grabbed it. Although as he closed the door, about to lock it once more he was startled by a familiar voice.
“What are you doing?”
“Y/n…”
“Is that my master key? Why do you have it? Why are you-”
“Wait, listen, I can explain.”
“Eric, did you-”
“You got it.”
You turned around to see Hyunjae walking into the classroom, a smile on his face. He walked over and took his phone from Eric.
“Thanks.”
“Uh… Hyunjae, did you ask Eric to get your phone from your locker?” You questioned.
“Yeah. I kinda forgot my code and didn’t want to embarrass myself and tell the teacher, but Eric said he knew how to get into my locker without anyone knowing.”
“I see. So he wasn’t breaking in?”
“No, not at all. I’m sorry if that’s what you thought was happening.”
“If this happens again, you should let me know.” You turned back to Eric. “Instead of stealing my master key.”
“I was gonna put it back…” Eric mumbled. “If you hadn’t caught me you’d never know…”
“Still. What if a teacher caught you? Do you know how that would look on me?”
“I’m sorry…”
You sighed. “Look, I need you all to behave yourselves here, especially tomorrow.”
“What’s tomorrow?” Hyunjae asked. “I don’t recall us having an exam or something?”
“The soccer team has their first big season game tomorrow. Therefore students from the opposing team will be at our school. I don’t want any kind of trouble from the students in my class, got it?”
“We’ll behave. Although I guess the best way to stay out of trouble is to stay in your sights. I’ll stay by your side tomorrow. I certainly don’t want to get in trouble.”
“I will too.” Eric quickly added. “I’ll be good.”
“You better.”
With that you excused yourself, taking back the master key, having other things to do during your free period. You had just been passing by when you saw what Eric was doing and had to confront him. Once you were gone Eric intended to go about his day but Hyunjae grabbed his arm.
“Don’t you have something to say to me?”
“Huh? Oh, yeah, thanks.”
“Thanks? How about an explanation? Why were you trying to steal my phone?”
Eric scoffed. “I’ve said it before, I don’t like you, and I certainly don’t trust you. I know you’re hiding something, and you’re not really a student. If anything, I should be asking you why you didn’t rat me out.”
“I’m not here to cause trouble. Besides, the last thing I want to do is upset y/n.”
“She’s not your concern.”
“What? I can’t be nice and help you out of a bind?”
“We’re not exactly friends, are we?”
“You’re right. Which is why I did what I did for y/n’s benefit. You are welcome though, but if I ever catch you trying to steal my things again, I’ll make you pay.”
“Then I won’t get caught.”
Hyunjae rolled his eyes and made his exit. Eric may not have gotten his hands on the phone, but his own suspicions were confirmed. He couldn’t trust Hyunjae, and he had to make sure you didn’t get any closer to him. His only solace for the moment was that because of the game tomorrow, you’d be pretty busy. So the likeness of Hyunjae sticking close to you would actually be slim. It would be easy to volunteer himself to stick close to the transfer, and Hyunjae wouldn’t just ditch him since he’d get questioned if caught by you. Still, tomorrow was gonna be its own day with its own challenges.
🖤
“You’re up early.”
For the most part, Eric was the second one down in the morning, but with a new face around he figured it was best to be down as soon as possible so you didn’t wind up alone with Hyunjae. Of course as soon as he walked out he saw Hyunjae, but thankfully you weren’t around yet. He sighed and walked over, ignoring the comment.
“You must be excited for today. You’re not part of the team, but you do enjoy playing soccer.”
“We don’t have to talk.”
“True, oh, I did want to ask you something.” Hyunjae pulled out a box. “I got this cool necklace the other day, do you think y/n would like it?”
“No. She doesn’t wear jewelry. She’s not a fan of it.”
“Really? I thought all girls like jewelry.”
“Well she’s not like all girls.”
“Hm… well, can I give it to you?”
“I don’t want a necklace.”
“I figured I’d at least ask. I’ll still give it to y/n anyways then. I’m sure she can-”
Eric took the box before Hyunjae finished, not liking the idea of him giving you anything. Even if it was a simple necklace. He opened the box and saw a red teardrop necklace that looked more like a fang. It was nice, and he kinda felt bad that he wouldn’t let you have it.
“Here. Let me help.”
Hyunjae reached over and took the necklace, helping Eric put it on. He smiled and admired his work for a moment.
“It does look good on you.”
“Whatever.”
“Morning, guys!”
Eric heard you calling out to them and quickly hid the necklace under his shirt, putting the box in his pocket. He turned around and smiled at you, waving and greeting you. Just like always the three of you walked together, Eric making sure he was at the center. The morning would be normal, but after lunch that’s when the rival team would arrive. Some students were there to welcome them, and one of those was you. Of course Eric and Hyunjae were around to keep an eye on you. The visiting students would be out on the field warming up, while the home team would be inside. Most classes from there were cut short as everyone was urged to make time for the game and support the school team.
At some point along the way Eric lost track of Hyunjae, having no idea where he would go, but he was more concerned with finding you. He knew that as the class president you’d be outside near the visiting students, so he went off to go find you. Just like before you were on the bleachers, and Hyunjae was not around. He called out to you as he approached, then he was on the floor as a soccer ball hit in the face and knocked him off balance. Next thing he knew a few others and yourself were surrounding him, checking on him. You helped Eric up, seeing the blood dripping down his nose. Instinctively you used your jacket sleeve to clean him up a bit and got him onto his feet. You helped him over to where the water spouts near the field.
“I’m fine.” Eric assured. “I’ve been hit by soccer balls before.”
“Still. Gosh, I told you to stay out of trouble, but I guess trouble found you.”
“Right? Although it’s fine, I won’t make a big deal out of it.”
“Thanks, I’d appreciate that.”
“I do need to get back, the game is gonna start soon.”
“Go on. I’m gonna wash up properly.”
“Text me if you need anything.”
“I will.”
Eric watched you head back to the field and went back into the school. His nose had stopped bleeding, but he had a bit of blood on his shirt he wanted to try to wash out. As he made his way to the bathroom he ran into Hyunjae. He expected to hear some snarky remarks, but instead he was suddenly pinned to the wall, Hyunjae examining him in a rather frantic manner.
“What the hell happened to you? Who did this?”
“Woah, woah, I’m fine, get off.” Eric shoved Hyunjae away. “What’s your problem?”
“Tell me what happened.” Hyunjae grabbed Eric’s face. “Who made you bleed?”
“Dude, I said I’m fine. I just took a soccer ball to the face. It was an accident.”
“Did you see who did it? Was anyone else hurt?”
“I said it was an accident, so I don’t know who it was, and I don’t care. No one else got hit. Y/n just helped me clean up a bit.”
“Y/n… did she get blood on herself?”
“Uh, I think? I’m sure-”
“Fuck.”
“Huh?”
Hyunjae let Eric go and then ran off down the hall, leaving the other confused. Eric made it to the bathroom to do what he really intended, but he kept thinking back to that minor interrogation. Hyunjae was on edge about you, and it left an uneasy feeling in his gut. He cleaned his shirt a bit and then went out to find you himself. You weren’t out on the field as you should have been, and he asked some of your friends where you had gone. They didn’t really know, but one said they saw you heading inside to the gym, but the team had already come outside. Eric made his way over, walking into the gym and coming before an impossible sight.
“Please… please don’t hurt me…”
You were pinned to the wall with a hand around your throat, a student glaring down at you. A few others surrounded you as well. You weren’t sure what was happening, but the glowing red eyes that stared at you were frightening.
“You won’t be scared for long.”
“Y/n!” Eric yelled, getting everyone’s attention. “Let her go!”
Eric ran towards you, only to be grabbed and slammed to the floor by someone moving impossibly fast. He groaned and looked up to see a red eyed creature flash some fangs and keep him pinned.
“Stay out of this.”
“… what… are you…?”
“Hungry.”
“Let them go!”
Another voice boomed in the gym, and Eric managed to look over to see Hyunjae walking in. He tried to warn the other, but a hand was quickly around his throat cutting him off.
“This is your one chance to walk away.”
“And what does one of you think you can do to all of us?”
“Who said I’m alone?”
In a matter of moments more individuals appeared behind Hyunjae, none of them familiar to Eric or you. There was no telling what would happen next, but a fight was imminent. Before you knew it Hyunjae and his friends had glowing red eyes too and they moved to attack. You yelled and shut your eyes, not wanting to see anything. You still didn’t want to believe it. Eric managed to get free as the one holding him was attacked. He scrambled to his feet, wanting to get to you, but Hyunjae grabbed him and shoved him to a corner.
“Ya! You have to help y/n!”
“And you need to stay safe.”
A loud scream caught everyone’s attention. You yelled as you felt a deep sting in your neck, but it quickly died down as your vision got blurry and you felt a different sensation taking hold. When the creature ripped itself away from your neck it dropped you.
“This one isn’t the one we’re looking for.”
It wasn’t long before these hostile individuals were dealt with, although Eric still didn’t understand what was happening. He didn’t really care though. As soon as he had a chance he went over to your side, seeing the wound on your neck and placing a hand over it.
“Y/n? Y/n, can you hear me?”
“Hm… Eric…”
“It’s okay, you’re gonna be alright.”
“…”
“Eric, we need to talk.”
As Hyunjae stepped towards the both of you, Eric only pulled you closer into his embrace. Too much had happened too fast, and he didn’t know who to trust anymore.
“This is your fault! You-”
“Let me explain. I know you must have questions, but I swear I’m not the bad guy here.”
“… what are you? What is all this?”
“I know this is gonna sound crazy, but I’m a vampire. We’re real.”
“… vampire… and the others? The ones who attacked y/n?”
“They’re vampires too, from a different nest.”
“What were they doing here? Why are you here?”
“For the same reason. You.”
“Me?”
“Yes. Blood is a delicacy, and you’re on the rarer side.”
“Huh?”
“Your blood is special, it’s extremely rare, and many nests want it for themselves. It’s the sweetest thing we could ever taste, and it could make us more powerful, even if for a bit.”
“You… you want my blood?”
“I came here to find you, and protect you, nothing else.”
“So this whole time… I was your target…”
“Yes.”
“I… I don’t understand… why me… why-”
“We don’t really know why your blood is special, but my nest and I came across you a while ago. Your scent alerted us to who you were, and we knew you needed to be protected. We thought having one of us here with you would be enough so you could go about your life normally, but I’m afraid that’s not the case anymore.”
“What do you mean?”
“If one nest found you, it’s likely another will, and if you stay here you’ll be putting your friends in danger.”
“You want me to leave? No, no way, I can’t just run off with some vampires! How do I know you won’t kill me or keep me around like some blood bag?”
“If we were gonna do that we would have kidnaped you ages ago instead of having me pretend to be a student.”
“I can’t just leave.”
“Eric… y/n was attacked because your blood, your scent, was on her. The other vampires thought she was the special one. I gave you that necklace this morning so it would mask your scent, but I didn’t think about other possibilities. I’m sorry.”
“So then… this is my fault?”
“No! No, that’s not what I’m saying. You didn’t choose this but… you have to make a choice now. If you stay, things could get worse.”
“And what if I go with you? What then?”
“As long as you’re human, you’re a target and in danger.” Another vampire walked over. “But if you become like us, your blood won’t be so special anymore.”
“You don’t just want me to leave school… you want me to leave my whole life behind…”
“The decision is still yours to make but…”
The other vampire knelt down before Eric and you, biting into his wrist and placing the wound against your lips. Blood dripped down your throat, and you unconsciously began to drink. After a moment the vampire pulled away his arm, and moved Eric’s hand from your neck. He saw the wound heal right before his eyes.
“What about her? What about… my life…”
“We can compel her to forget all of this, and make her believe you transferred schools. The same thing more or less for your family. You could still keep in touch with them, but visiting may be impossible for a while.”
“… vampire are immortal… aren’t they?”
“More or less.”
“Can I take her home?”
“I’ll have the others deal with the mess at school and then we’ll meet up with you.”
Eric and Hyunjae cleaned the blood off of you and the made the trip back to the apartment with two others in tow. You remained unconscious for the whole ordeal. Eric got you back to your place and set you down in bed. He took off your jacket and shoes, tucking you into bed and watching you for a bit while he held your hand.
“She won’t be mad at me… right?”
“We can make sure of it.”
“I’ll go with you guys, and no one else gets hurt?”
“No one should.”
“Alright.”
Eric stepped out of the room, finding some paper and a pen to leave you a note. He knew this was so sudden and would really shock you, but he didn’t want to see you get hurt again. When he finished he left the note by your bedside and then went with the others. He’d need to get all his things and move out, but with ten other helping hands he knew it’d be quick. He wished he could have properly said goodbye to you, but for your sake things had to go this way. All he could hope for was that he’d see you again one day.
🖤
The transfer was so sudden you still had trouble accepting it. One day Eric was here, and the next he was gone. Sure he left a note for you but you tried to call and text but got no response. It made you worry even though everything was likely fine. Your world just felt so different without him. Not to mention Hyunjae was gone too. You suddenly found yourself walking all alone to school and coming home by yourself too. You understood that things happened, but you just wanted to be sure everything was alright.
For a while you kept trying Eric’s phone, but your messages were left unread and your calls went straight to voicemail. You figured he’d reach out when he had a chance, so you just had to be patient. School was still the same so you focused on that. Your life just became a lot quieter. The days kept passing by and you’d find things to keep you busy. One weekend you were cleaning your place and found your missing uniform jacket under your bed. You couldn’t remember where you had left it and now it seemed it got swept out of sight. You needed to do laundry so you figured you’d get to it today. You got your basket of dirty clothes and headed out. You didn’t have a washer or dryer at your place, but there was a laundromat a few blocks down. Although while on your way you got stopped by some guys.
“Well don’t you have an interesting scent.”
You didn’t answer and tried to move around them, but they wouldn’t let you leave. One of them suddenly grabbed something from your basket, taking a deep breath. It grossed you out and you were too nervous to reach back for your item.
“This is it… but it’s not you… who’s blood is this?”
“Uh…”
“Answer me.”
Glowing red eyes paralyzed you, making your head spin for a moment. Then you gazed at the article of clothing they were holding, seeing it was your school jacket, and noticing the stain on it. The answer to his question suddenly came to mind and slipped out of your mouth without hesitation.
“It’s Eric’s blood… he got hurt during game day…”
“And you know this Eric, yes?”
“He’s my friend…”
“And where is he now?”
“I… I don’t know… he transferred over a week ago… I haven’t heard from him since…”
“Hm… and if you were to go missing… do you think he’d come for you?”
“I… I don’t… I think so…”
“Good.”
🖤
“When can I see her again?”
“Once you’re ready.”
“And when is that?”
“When Sangyeon says so.”
“Ugh.”
Everything had been weird for Eric. To just uproot his entire life and run away with some vampires, it sounded crazy. It was, but he wanted to keep you and everyone he cared about safe. He had seen the danger around him first hand, and he didn’t want others getting hurt because of him. The best thing he could do was become one of the undead and hopefully go back home someday. The whole transformation was something else, but he had slowly been adjusting.
“You know… if you were supposed to be looking after me, why did you get so close to y/n?”
“Still jealous?”
“Answer the question.”
“I was just trying to get information. She knew you, and you weren’t exactly approachable.”
“We were kinda friends.”
“I’m more inclined to believe that now.”
“See, and since we’re such good friends now, we should go visit our other friend.”
“Eric.”
“I’m just saying.”
“You’re still way too young. Besides… you shouldn’t stay so attached… you’re gonna have to say goodbye one day.”
“… I know… but I want to be in her life for as long as I possibly can.”
All Eric wanted to do now was reach out to those he left behind and make sure they’ve been doing well. His phone had been confiscated, and he wanted it back already. So he worked hard to prove to the others he was in control and could be around people again. Although after being told no one too many times he decided to sneak out. With super speed he could go back to his old apartment to see you and be back before sunrise.Of course he’d get scolded upon his return, but it would be worth it just to see you again.
He made a quick stop along the way to buy your favorite snacks, but when he got to your place there was no answer. It was pretty late into the night, and you were usually home at this time. He didn’t see you as someone who would be out so late, but he had to be sure. Eric made sure he was alone before entering your passcode and letting himself in. As soon as he entered he saw your slippers at the door, so you were likely out. He really wanted to see you so he figured he’d just wait and explain himself later, but the minutes ticked by and before he knew it a few hours passed. Without a phone he couldn’t even message you to ask where you were.
He figured he should probably go look for you. Maybe you had stayed at school studying, or were eating some ramen at a convenience store or something. Either way, he couldn’t just sit still and wait for you anymore. So he went to some of your favorite places, but there was no sign of you. He was about to ask someone if he could borrow their phone when something caught his eye. There was a missing persons poster on the light poll, and it was your face on display. He ripped off the flyer and stared at it, seeing your name and description. Something was very wrong here, and he rushed back to the others.
“Eric! Where the hell-”
“What is this!” Eric shoved the flyer into Sangyeon’s hands. “You said she would be safe!”
“I… I don’t understand. How does-”
“That isn’t her parents number. She’s been missing for who knows how long! Do something!”
“We don’t exactly go around helping people.”
“So she just so happens to go missing after I disappear? How are you sure some other nest didn’t know about me? And therefore targeted her!”
“Relax. Let’s just call and see who answers.”
Eric snatched Sangyeon’s phone and made the call himself. He was extremely on edge as he dialed, not sure how this would go. You could have been kidnapped by other vampires, or humans, and he wasn’t sure which one was worse. As the phone rang he paced around, and when it finally went through he stopped.
“… hello… I… uh… I saw your missing persons poster about this girl… her name is y/n…”
“Do you have information regarding the missing girl?”
“I… I didn’t know she was missing… I was calling to ask for information.”
“And who are you in relation to the girl?”
“I’m her friend.”
“Then what would your name be?”
“Eric.”
The line went silent for a long moment, Eric even thought the call had been disconnected, but that wasn’t the case.
“Then it’s you.”
“Huh?”
“You’re the special one, aren’t you? The one that ran away.”
“I… who is this? What have you done with y/n!?”
“Don’t worry about the girl, she’s alive, but if you want her back, how about a trade?”
“For what?”
“You know the answer to that.”
“Where are you?”
“Good. Now we’re getting somewhere.”
Eric was given a location and then the line went dead. He immediately threw glares at the others. This wasn’t supposed to happen.
“Let’s go.”
“You can’t just come alone.” Kevin said. “It’s dangerous.”
“It’s my friend! I’m going whether you like it or not.”
“We all are.” Sangyeon stated. “It’s best we all go together anyway.”
It was still night and the place they were headed to was underground, so they didn’t have to worry about the sun. The only problem was that they had no idea what they were walking into. Eric didn’t care, as long as he got you back safe and sound. When they arrived it wasn’t long before they found their way, catching the scent of fresh and old blood. A lot of nests could be messy, and Sangyeon wasn’t one to allow such things, so Eric could count himself lucky in that regard. Soon enough they came across a few other vampires.
“All I smell is a bunch of vampires.” One hissed. “Where’s the boy?”
“I’m right here.” Eric stepped forward. “Now where is she?”
“The deal was-”
“I guess I really aren’t all that special once I’m like you.”
“They turned you? What a waste. I guess there’s no need to keep that human around, or let you leave.”
They all knew going in that Eric being revealed to be a vampire would cause problems, but they had come prepared for a fight. For once Eric could just let loose and really test his own abilities. Although what he really cared about was finding you. In a place like this there would only be one loud and steady heartbeat. It took him a while to find it, but once he did he set out to locate the source. A while later after dealing with other blood suckers he found you in a cold dark room. You were curled up on a mattress, clothes ripped up, covered in bruises and bite marks. The only thing that kept him from panicking was the sound of your heartbeat.
“Y/n…”
Eric knelt down at your side and carefully lifted you up into his arms. He lightly tapped your face, trying to get you to wake up. It took a second but your eyes slowly began to open.
“… hm… please… no… no more…”
“It’s okay… I got you now… you’re gonna be okay…”
“… eric… is that you…”
“Yeah, yeah it’s me… I’m so sorry…”
‘“… you… you can’t be here… they… they’ll… hurt… you…”
“They won’t. I’m not alone. I’m gonna get you out of here, okay, just trust me.”
All Eric had been focused on was finding you and now that he had, he was starting to notice other things. The smell of blood, your blood, filled the air. His throat felt dry and his gaze focused on the marks all over your body. He wasn’t thinking about what had been done to you, but wanting a taste for himself.
“Y/n… could I…”
“… hm…”
“Just a bit… I promise…”
“… what…?”
In a swift motion Eric had brought you closer to him, digging his fangs into your tender neck. A weak scream escaped past your lips. The sensation all too familiar and draining. Instinctively you tried to push Eric away, but you had no strength to stop him.
“… eric… eric… e…”
“Eric!”
While searching for you Hyunjae came across a frightening scene. He immediately pulled Eric off of you, throwing him halfway across the room. Then his focus shifted to you, seeing your battered body, and the fresh bite mark.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck, Sangyeon!!!”
Hyunjae placed his hand over the bite mark before he was tackled away from you. Next thing he knew he was wrestling with Eric.
“Don’t touch her!”
“Eric, snap out of it! She’s dying!”
“What…?”
That seemed to get Eric out of his frenzie, but it wouldn’t help you. Seconds later Sangyeon and the others entered the room. It wasn’t hard to figure out what the priority was and Sangyeon was quickly at your side, biting into his wrist and pressing the bloody wound to your lips.
“Come on, drink it.”
Once Eric had his senses back he rushed to your side, although he was held back by Juyeon and Haknyeon.
“No, no, she can’t die, y/n!”
There wasn’t much he could do besides listen to your slowing heart beat and pained breaths. The taste of your blood was still on his tongue and he hated himself for it. Then it all went quiet. His body sagged to the ground and the others slowly let him grow. He crawled over to your body, tears blurring his vision.
“… no… no… y/n… no… please…”
“I’m sorry… her injuries were already severe…”
“… it’s all my fault… I couldn’t…”
Eric pulled you into his arms once more, his tears falling onto your cheeks. He had wanted to see you again for so long, but he hadn’t imagined things ending this way. He continued to sob as he held you, then a miracle seemed to take place. You suddenly took in a breath, eyes wide open and looking around in a panic.
“Y/n… y/n you’re alive!”
“What happened!? What’s going on!?”
“You’re okay!”
Eric hugged you tightly, not sure if this was a dream but he didn’t want it to end. Although a moment later he was pried away despite his protests, Sangyeon looking you over.
“Who are you?”
“That depends…”
“What?”
“What are you doing, Sangyeon?” Eric yelled. “She’s fine!”
“This was not my intention.”
“Huh?”
“She’s coming with us. Let’s go.”
Eric was released and he was at your side once more. You were still confused but you held on to him tightly.
“What’s going on…?”
“It’s a lot to explain.” Hyunjae came over, offering you his hand. “But we should get out of here first.”
“Hyunjae? Is it really you?”
“Yeah.”
The two boys helped you to your feet, having you wrap an arm around each of their shoulders. You still had a lot of questions and they knew that.
It was best not to pay attention to any onlookers, and that’s exactly what you did. You ignored the voices and jumped up to grab the railing of a fire escape, climbing up and making your way to the rooftop.
“Stop right there!”
You didn’t expect to be followed, but you knew you just needed to keep moving and get out of sight. You ran and jumped to the nearest rooftop, landing on your feet and keeping momentum. There was a rooftop entrance on the next building to your left. If you could get behind that you could activate your invisibility rune and then be on your way. You didn’t even bother looking back to see if your pursuers were still there and just executed your plan. You made the jump and bolted out of view, getting your stele from your belt pouch and activating one of the runes on your arm. You let out a breath in relief, taking a moment to rest.
“Gotchu!”
“Huh!?”
You were grabbed and yanked out of your hiding spot, quickly finding yourself surrounded by a lot of strangers. Although that wasn’t the first thing on your mind.
“You can see me?”
“Of course we can, what kind of question is that?”
For a second you thought maybe you hadn’t activated the rune properly, but you had more pressing matters at hand.
“Look, whatever you think you saw, just forget about it. No one would believe you anyway.”
“That’s not entirely true.”
“Let me go! I have nothing else to say.”
“You still haven’t told me who you are.”
“That’s none of your business.”
“Any shadowhunter in my region is my business, now answer me.”
“What? Shadowhunter? What are you talking about?”
“I’m getting tired of these games.”
“Huh? I…”
Your gaze eventually shifted to the arm that was holding you, seeing familiar runes. You quietly looked around at the others, seeing they all had runes as well, some you had never seen before. Not to mention you could see a few other steles as well.
“… you… you’re like me…”
“You mean a shadowhunter?”
“What’s that?”
“Alright, I’ve had enough of this, you’re coming with me.”
“Huh!? Where are you taking me!?”
“The Institute.”
You tried to fight back and escape, but some of the others around grabbed you, and soon enough you were being dragged elsewhere. After a bit you just gave up and complied with their wishes. Even if you shouldn’t just surrender, you had questions of your own that they’d likely be able to answer. You were taken to this huge place, honestly in awe by how beautiful it was. There were others there as well, also covered in runes. As you were led towards the back you could see training rooms and a lot of advanced technology. You knew the world wasn’t what it seemed with supernatural creatures hiding in the shadows, but this felt like a whole other reality.
“What is this place?”
“The Institute.”
“What’s it for?”
“It-”
“Enough. She can ask her questions after she’s answered ours.”
You were brought to what appeared to be an interrogation room, minus the cuffs. For a moment you were alone before one of the others from before came in and began asking you questions. Mostly about who you were and what you knew.
“Your name?”
“Y/n.”
“Alright, y/n, who taught you about the shadow world?”
“The what?”
“Everything about the downworlders, the runes, your blade, that stuff.”
“Downworlders?”
“Vampires, demons, etc.”
“Oh, well, my mother taught me about the runes when I was young and told me the world was more dangerous than I knew. She told me about the other creatures that roamed the Earth and showed me what I could do to protect myself. She told me I was special and I needed to be careful.”
“So your mother was a shadowhunter. What about your father?”
“I never knew him. My mother said he was a bad person and we didn’t need him in our lives.”
“Where’s your mother now?”
“I… uh… I don’t know… a couple years ago she sent me to this country to live with a host family. She told me not to go back home and that she’d reach out to me when she could, but I’ve never heard from her since…”
“What place did you call home before?”
“I lived in New York during my childhood. When I came here I stayed with my host family until I could live on my own. I keep some contact with them but not much.”
“I see… and what were you doing tonight?”
“I… I was following a lead.”
“A lead? Are you investigating something?”
“A friend of mine has been missing for months now. No one’s heard from her and the police have nothing. I was merely retracing her steps and came across some vampires, I took care of things from there.”
“Who taught you how to wield a seraph blade?”
“You mean my weapon? My mother showed me how it worked, but I taught myself to fight when I came here.”
“Alright then.” The boy sighed. “I have one last question for you. Do you know what you are?”
“What do you mean?”
“Your mother said you were special, did she ever tell you why?”
“No.”
🖤
Jacob walked out of the interrogation room feeling like he had more questions than answers now. He made his way to the monitor room, seeing Sangyeon and a few others gathered.
“Do you have anything?”
“I ran her mother’s name through the database.” Sangyeon explained. “But there was no match. No shadowhunter, active or inactive, alive or deceased, is known by that name.”
“Is it possible her mother wasn’t a shadowhunter?”
“Then how is she one?” Hyunjae mentioned. “Huh? The girl is covered in runes, only nephilim can bear those marks. The mother is the one who raised her and taught her all these things, so she has to be a shadowhunter.”
“What about the father?” Juyeon asked. “She doesn’t know anything about him. What if a shadowhunter secretly had a child? Or doesn’t know they have a secret child.”
“At least one of the parents is a shadowhunter.” Sangyeon confirmed. “We know that much. It could be both, but either way, we don’t have records of this girl or her parents, and she doesn’t even know what she is. The truth was kept from her, but she was still taught how to protect herself in this world.”
“So then what do we do with her?” Jacob questioned. “We also have to report this unknown shadowhunter to the Clave, don’t we?”
“For starters we should probably tell her what’s really going on, and what she is. From there we can properly begin her training.”
“What?”
“Regardless of her upbringing, she’s still a shadowhunter, she’s still one of us, and we shall treat her as such.”
“What if she’s a spy or something?” Juyeon stated. “We can’t just let her stay at the Institute and share all this information.”
“A spy? For who? Downworlders?”
“Or the Circle.”
“You’re joking right. They’re not around anymore. Besides, she seems to be completely clueless about the shadow world.”
“It could be an act.”
“Then we’ll keep a close eye on her and assess her true motives. Does that sound good?”
“Fine. I’ll talk to her.”
“Okay.”
🖤
Even though nothing had happened besides a minor interrogation, you were getting somewhat nervous. Being alone with your thoughts was taking you down a dark path. These people might just kill you for what you knew and no one would ever find your body. Before you could dwell on the thought some more the door opened and a new face entered. They didn’t have anything with them and just sat down across from you. They seemed a bit annoyed which didn’t help ease your nerves.
“I’m sure you have a lot of questions but there are things we need to go over first.”
“Okay. Like what?”
“You.”
“What about me?”
“Your mother said you were special, and she was right. You’re a shadowhunter, like me and the rest of the people in this building. Before you object, a shadowhunter is a nephilim, half mortal, half angel, and they’re the only ones who can bear the runes you have and use them. One of your parents had to be a shadowhunter for you to be like us. I’m guessing it was your mother.”
“… I wouldn’t really know… she never had any runes on her…”
“She didn’t?”
“No, she just taught me things.”
“Hm… maybe it was your father. Either way, despite being clueless to your roots, you do know about the shadow world. You know that other creatures exist besides mortals, like vampires. Such beings are called downworlders, and our job as shadowhunters is to maintain the peace and separation between the mortal world and the shadow world. Do you understand?”
“So you’re like law enforcement for the supernatural?”
“I guess that’s one way to look at it.”
“Alright. I guess all that makes sense, it explains a lot too. So what happens now?”
“Since you’re a rogue shadowhunter, you’ll be staying with us for now. We have a room for you here at the Institute and we could train you to be a proper shadowhunter.”
“Oh… what if I refuse?”
“Excuse me? You think you can just walk away here? The offer was merely to be courteous, but you don’t just get to leave. You’re a shadowhunter, and your inexperience puts you and others in danger. You could handle yourself with some vampires, good job, but what happens when you come across a demon? Or a warlock? You think your runes and mediocre skills will save your life? You’re just a child and you could wind up dead, or worse.”
“I… uh…”
“Someone else will get you situated.”
After that you were left alone once more with your thoughts. By now the fear of being murdered had subsided, but you were starting to feel guilty. It was stupid really, but he had a point. Your knowledge of this shadow world was incredibly limited, and you were a dangerous person. You knew your mother had only taught you enough to protect yourself but now here you were going out into the world and hunting, putting yourself and others in danger. Without knowing you were being irresponsible and doing things you were never taught.
“I’m sorry about him.” Another boy entered. “Juyeon can be pretty strict about the shadowhunter life, and you are quite an anomaly.”
“Sorry…”
“You have nothing to apologize for. I’m Younghoon by the way, I’ll be showing you around.”
“I can finally leave this room?”
Younghoon chuckled. “Yes. Come on now.”
You followed Younghoon out of the interrogation room and around the Institute. He explained how this place was the main shadowhunter base for the city and corresponding areas. The head of the Institute was Sangyeon, who you had informally met earlier as he was the one initially interrogating you on the rooftop. Jacob was the one who properly interrogated you when you arrived, and he was Sangyeon’s right hand. A few shadowhunters lived in the Institute, but many had homes in the city. Shadowhunters came here to gather intel, train, and prepare for missions. For the time being they wanted you to stay at the Institute until they were sure you could be out in the world on your own.
“This will be your room. You should have all you need, and tomorrow you can retrieve some of your belongings.”
“Actually I have work tomorrow morning. I can’t miss that.”
“Work? Oh, right, I suppose you would have a mundane job. Since you are currently under observation and protection, another shadowhunter will have to go with you.”
“That should be fine. I work as a barista at this cafe, so there should be no issue having someone in the cafe during the entirety of my shift.”
“Then it’s settled. Someone should be by in the morning to check in with you. Have a good night.”
“Thanks.”
So much life changing things had happened in one night. Although it wasn’t all bad. You weren’t alone anymore. There were so many others like you, and a whole new world you were a part of. You laid on the bed for a while just processing everything. All you could hope for now was that come next morning this wouldn’t all be a dream.
🖤
“Get up!”
A loud knock startled you and caused you to fall out of bed. You quickly snapped awake, getting up and looking around. Your surroundings were unfamiliar at first until you remembered last night’s revelations. With that answered you grabbed your phone and checked the time. You’d need to head out to work soon. You just hoped you would have enough time to go by your place and change. As soon as you stepped out of the room there was someone there to greet you.
“That was quick. Good morning, I’m Eric. I’ll be accompanying you today.”
“Cool. We need to get going and I need to change, so let’s go.”
“What-?”
You were pushing Eric down the hall, telling him to show you the exit as there wasn’t much time to waste. He was clearly confused and unsure of what you were talking about, but he got the gist eventually. Lucky for you the Institute wasn’t too far from your apartment, and a quick bus ride got you home in no time. Eric had never ridden a bus before, so it was certainly an experience for him, but not one he could dwell on for too long.
“Okay, just five minutes and then we can go.”
“This is your place?”
“Yes. Don’t touch anything and just stay right here.”
You scrambled to your bedroom, quickly changing out of last night’s clothes and freshening up a bit before changing and grabbing your work clothes. This wasn’t your first time being in a rush, so you already knew what you needed to do. Despite being told to stay put Eric was curious to look around. He lived in the Institute and liked it there, but he did wonder what it was like to have your own place. The apartment looked cozy, and he saw a few pictures on the wall too. Although what he was drawn to was a picture of you when you were young with a woman who appeared to be your mother. He examined it for a moment and quickly looked around before discreetly taking a picture and sending it to the others. He glanced at the other pictures and didn’t see anyone who fit as a father figure.
“Ya! I told you not to move!”
“Sorry, I was just really curious. I’ve never had my own place.”
“Ah, you live at the Institute. It must be nice though, you’re never really alone.”
“That’s one way to look at it.”
“Okay. I’m all set. We can go now.”
“What about breakfast?”
“I usually eat at the cafe.”
“Seriously?”
“There’s no time, come on.”
You grabbed Eric’s arm and dragged him out of your place, rushing down the stairs to catch another bus. Even though you had woken up elsewhere and needed to run around you still made it to your shift on time.
“You work here?”
“Yes, now go sit down over there somewhere.”
You shoved Eric towards a table in the corner then went to clock in. You greeted your coworkers and put on your hat and apron. Even if you were out investigating last night, during the day you were just a normal person. You heated up a breakfast sandwich, which was your usual routine, then poured a glass of orange juice. This wasn’t for you though, so you placed the meal on a tray and then went over to place it before Eric.
“Here’s breakfast. On me, so enjoy.”
“Is this what you usually have for breakfast?”
“When I have the morning shift, yeah.”
“Okay. How long is your shift?”
“Just six hours. Keep yourself busy.”
You smiled and went back behind the counter, getting your own breakfast and just treating the day like any other. A few regulars came in, although you did notice a bunch of people staring over at Eric. He was drawing unwanted attention probably because of his looks.
“Y/n.”
“Yeah, what’s up Misu?”
“That guy you brought in with you, is he your boyfriend or something?”
“No.”
“Then?”
“He’s just… a friend. We haven’t been in touch for a long time… and he wants to catch up. So he insisted on waiting for me until my shift was over.”
“Oh, okay. What’s his name?”
“Misu.”
“What? I’m just asking…”
“You want his number too?”
“If you have it.”
“Misu!”
“What?”
“Nothing, let’s just get back to work.”
For your break you made yourself a smoothie and went over to sit down with Eric. He had been writing in a journal, listening to music with one earbud.
“Whatcha doing?”
“Just going over a report I need to finish. Is your shift over?”
“No. I’m on break right now.”
“Hm. Do you enjoy this job?”
“It’s nice. I get to make drinks and I work with good people. The pay is decent and it covers my expenses. Speaking of, I know you have food and housing covered but what about other expenses?”
“I do get paid.”
“Wait, you get a salary as a shadowhunter?”
“Of course. It is a job.”
“Huh… so if i become a proper shadowhunter, it could become my full time occupation?”
“If that’s really what you want. Since you have runes you’ve already skipped a few steps, but you will have to join the Clave to be a real shadowhunter.”
“Wait, so I don’t really have to be a shadowhunter?”
“Not really. Regardless of your parents’ status, the choice to be a shadowhunter is truly yours. If you want to be one you need to join the Clave, if not, you will be stripped of your runes and become mundane.”
“You mean a regular human…”
“Yes, although I do worry what the Clave will say about you.”
“What does that mean?”
“You’re not supposed to exist, not like this. The Clave should have been aware of your existence since you were born. If you wanted to be a shadowhunter you should have been raised as such at an institute or academy. For your mother to keep you hidden from our world, yet teach you about it. I fear that won’t sit well with the Clave.”
“Yeah… I feel like I was raised isolated from the world. My mother homeschooled me until my last two years of high school, and she would slowly teach me things about the shadow world. I always knew there was so much more she wasn’t telling me, but I trusted she had a good reason for keeping secrets.”
“Do you resent her?”
“No. Like I said she must have had her reasons… just like she sent me to this country for an important reason too… I just miss her… and at this point I don’t even know if she’s alive.”
“I know this is all so new to you, but we are going to help you find your mother. It’s important we do, for your sake and hers.”
“Would you also help me find my friend? Or is that not your jurisdiction since she’s mundane.”
“You could make the request to Sangyeon if you’d like.”
“Thanks.” You took a sip of your smoothie. “Actually, I did want to ask. I’ve never really come across downworlders before, not until I came here, but I’ve only really run into vampires. What else is there?”
“You’re more likely to run into vampires than any other downworlders around here. Besides them, there are werewolves, and warlocks, and faeries. Of course there are also demons.”
“What about angels? We’re part angel. Are there any angels who walk among us?”
“I’m afraid not. It’s just us nephilim down here on Earth.”
“Ah… but someone had to have had… like relations with an angel in the past… right?”
Eric chuckled. “Not quite. You’ll learn about our history more during your studies, but angels and humans never really procreated.”
“Okay. I guess that makes more sense.” Your phone buzzed. “My break’s over, so I’ll get back to work now. I’ll let you know when I’m done.”
“Sure thing.”
You finished up your shift without incident and then returned to your apartment with Eric afterwards. You packed a bag of your essentials and made your way back to the Institute. Once you were properly settled your real training began. For starters you got your ass handed to you by Changmin and Haknyeon. What little training you had wasn’t enough to take them on, let alone be a real shadowhunter. It sucked losing a fight, but you were determined to push through and be better. When you weren’t fighting and trying to master other weapons you were studying. There was so much about shadowhunters and the shadow world that you needed to learn about if you truly wanted to live this life.
“You really want to be a shadowhunter, huh?”
Sunwoo enjoyed sparring with you the most, probably because you had yet to land a blow on him despite everything.
“What’s with the question?”
“I’m just saying. You could choose to be mundane. In reality you’re more mundane than shadowhunter.”
“My mother was a shadowhunter, I may not know about her past as one, but I want to honor her roots. This is my world too, even if I was kept from it. The choice is ultimately mine, right?”
“It is. I like your answer though. It’s not all that common for a shadowhunter to leave the Clave.”
With your focus and determination you were soon living up to proper shadowhunter expectations. You still had a long way to go, but most of the others agreed you could go out on missions with them soon. That way you could get some real experience under your belt.
🖤
“Sangyeon, have you told the Clave about her yet?”
“No.”
“What? We can’t just keep her hidden from the Clave. If they find out we’re secretly harbor-”
“Jacob, we need more information first.”
“How are we supposed to learn anything about her if we don’t get the Clave involved?”
“She’s an anomaly. If we just report her with no other information the Clave will likely take her to the Gard and hold her there as they figure out what to do with her. Or they might just execute her. That hardly seems fair.”
“Still. We can’t be held responsible for her, not like this.”
“I’m still searching for any record of her mother in our systems. Eric sent over a picture of her which should help. Not to mention y/n said her mother never had any runes. Meaning it’s likely she left the Clave, so finding a trace of her won’t be easy.”
“You’d need to look into former shadowhunter records, which does complicate matters.”
“I’d at least like to let the Clave know who’s child this is before I report anything.”
“Does Juyeon know about this?”
“He came by asking the same thing earlier. He wasn’t happy, and I know some of the others don’t agree with keeping y/n around either, but he had compassion to understand that y/n’s likely innocent in all this and we should do what we can to protect her, shadowhunter or not.”
“Well some of the others say she should be ready for field work. What do you think?”
“She says she wants to be a shadowhunter. It’s best she experiences what that truly means before she commits. Let the boys take her with for something simple.”
“I’ll relay the message.”
🖤
“What kind of mission is this? I was expecting a little more… action.”
“We’re following up on multiple reports of a disturbance.”
“I thought you didn’t deal with mundane issues?”
“When the reports are full of giant dog sightings, huge claw marks, and growling, that’s not pretty mundane.”
“Ah, so this is a recon missing.”
“What?” Kevin teased. “Not exciting enough for you?”
“I just thought I’d get to fight and kill something tonight.”
“Without proper reason we can’t just kill a downworlder. If something does happen though, I expect you to wield your weapon properly and put all that training to good use.”
“Will do, captain.”
Kevin chuckled, but focused on the situation at hand. Like he had said, there had been a handful of reports as of late about potential werewolf sightings. Those downworlders really weren’t that common in this area, and they’re usually pretty good at staying in the shadows. Only a small team was sent out just to take a look and see if there was anything going on that they needed to handle. You kinda hoped for some action, but you also understood you shouldn’t want it. The best outcome here was that it was some giant wild dog and not a werewolf. Although despite what was right, your hopes won out in the end.
A couple walking the streets went into an alley only to be met by a monster. You all heard the screams and quickly rushed over. The pair was already running away so it was easy to interfere without being seen. Kevin and Haknyeon jumped down to block the werewolf’s path, forcing it to retreat. From there you all wound up chasing after it. Haknyeon was the one with the bow, aiming to take the wolf down. An arrow managed to go through one of the creature’s legs, causing it to stumble and crash into the wall. You took the initiative then, summoning your blade and preparing the final strike when you suddenly stopped. The werewolf turned back into a human and you saw a vaguely familiar face.
“What’s wrong?” Kevin asked.
“I… I recognize this person.”
“Huh?”
You felt guilty as if you were responsible for all of this, but that was far from the truth. It was so easy for you to see downworlders as something else, as monsters, completely ignoring the fact they had their own lives. Reality hit you in the face, and you mentally scolded yourself for wanting to kill a random werewolf. Now you were back at the Institute, the werewolf brought along for questioning as well. One of the others was dealing with the downworlder while you were with the others going over the new information that had been discovered.
“Gregory Ozmen. A mundane that went missing two months ago has reappeared as a werewolf and has been harassing other mundanes.” Sangyeon explained. “This isn’t entirely unheard of. They must have gotten involved with the shadow world somehow and got turned.”
You were rather amazed that the Institute had access to police records, given that they didn’t interfere with mundane affairs. Although you were informed that they had connections, and some mundanes knew of them and would request assistance, hence your mission tonight. As you stared at the holo-screen and listened to the debrief you saw a bunch of other missing persons files, and one caught your eye.
“Wait, wait, I recognize this person too.” You pulled up the file in question. “Thomas Smith… he’s the vampire I was fighting the night you found me. He’s been missing for two months now. That’s two missing mundanes that return as downworlders, isn’t that weird?”
“Not really.” Hyunjae admitted. “Our jobs are to keep the mundane and shadow world safe, but we can’t stop them from ever interacting with one another. It’s not unheard of for mundanes to choose to become downworlders.”
“But-”
“I know what you’re thinking.” Changmin cut in. “Your friend’s been missing too, but look at these two cases. The mundanes weren’t missing for long before they resurfaced, and we’re the only eye witnesses. It’s possible they never really went missing and merely left behind their mundane lives without telling anyone.”
“I guess… who’s interrogating Gregory?”
“Jacob, and speaking of.” As you asked your question Jacob entered, all attention shifting to him. “How did it go? What did he say?”
“It was just a bunch of nonsense. He said he isn’t really part of a pack, that he has to kill a mundane to prove himself or else he’ll be killed.”
“Uh… is that normal werewolf behavior?”
“Hardly.” Eric said. “Werewolves aren’t usually solitary creatures. Did he at least tell you what happened to him?”
“That’s the thing. He said he has no memory of when he was turned. All he could tell me about himself was his name and that one day he woke up and was told he was a werewolf. This doesn’t sit well with me.”
“It is strange.” Sangyeon admitted. “Perhaps there is something else going on…”
“Can you guys figure out how many mundanes have gone missing in the last eight months?”
Your request was accepted, and Haknyeon pulled up all the corresponding files. It seemed that about fifty mundanes had gone missing over the last eight months, which averaged to about six or seven per month. The number wasn’t crazy high but you still felt like something was scratching at the back of your mind.
“Wait a minute…” Kevin mumbled. “That one, Jemma Coleman. Fuck.”
“What is it?”
“The nest we cleared out not too long ago. She was one of the vampires we eliminated.”
A few of the others seemed to recognize some of the missing persons, and the room grew silent. They had come across these people as downworlders, unaware that there might be something else going on. Then it clicked for you.
“Mundane trafficking.”
“What?”
“That’s surely a thing, isn’t it? Someone kidnapping mundanes and offering them to downworlders. Werewolves could always use more pack members, and surely vampires need a steady food supply while also wanting to increase their numbers. The amount of missing people may not be a lot, but a handful of them are resurfacing as downworlders. You can’t be sure they all consented to this, can you?”
“… Gregory was pretty aggressive, something more common in new werewolves.” Jacob mentioned. “With no memories of his past, it’s possible that what she’s saying is true. How could we have missed this though?”
“Cause you don’t get involved with mundane affairs. If it hadn’t been for me, you might not have ever figured this out.”
“That’s possible.” Sangyeon stated. “Either way we need to investigate these cases. There’s one too many coincidences and-”
“Are you serious?” Juyeon interrupted. “You’re just going to look into this cause she said so?”
“Juyeon, now is not-”
“Then when? Have you even informed the Clave about her presence yet?”
“I told you I would when-”
“So you haven’t. If the Clave finds out about this then-”
“What point are you trying to make here?”
“You don’t think it’s strange? We come across a shadowhunter with no real connections to our world, yet she so happens to point us in the direction of a potential mundane trafficking ring to gain our trust. All this to make herself look good to us and the Clave, don’t you think?”
“It’s my choice not to tell the Clave about her.”
“Why? She wasn’t our problem to begin with!”
“I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt, which I know the Clave likely won’t give.”
“That’s not your decision to make.”
“I’m the head of this Institute, so what I say goes.”
“… you… you don’t really see me as a shadowhunter…” You mumbled. “… do you…?”
“You act like you’re really one of us when your existence breaks all our rules and traditions.” Juyeon spat. “You’re more mundane than shadowhunter.”
“I… I suppose you’re not the only one who thinks that way…”
You looked around the room, seeing that some of the others couldn’t meet your gaze. You suddenly felt cold and alone, realizing that maybe this place wasn’t for you.
“Uh… I… um…” You took a breath. “I think you’re right… this isn’t really my place… and I’m not really fit to be a shadowhunter…”
“What about your mother?” Sunwoo questioned. “You wanted to honor her and-”
“If she was a shadowhunter then she left the life behind for a reason. Whatever it was, it’s probably why she never really told me about all this. Even if this was supposed to be my choice, she never wanted to burden me. I don’t think she wanted me to be a shadowhunter…”
“Y/n-”
“Besides. My skills aren’t where they’re supposed to be for a shadowhunter my age, and I doubt they ever will be. The only reason I got into all this shadow world stuff was because I was looking for my friend… all I want to know is what happened to her. If you can help me get answers, then I’ll leave this all behind.”
“You don’t-”
“I’m fine with that.” Juyeon said. “Just don’t get upset if the answers aren’t what you want.”
“I know… um… I think… I’m gonna go back to my place… so I don’t bother you all…”
You made a swift exit, trying to hold back your tears until you made it to your room. You shut the door and locked it behind you, sitting by your bed hugging your knees to your chest. This really wasn’t your place or your world. All the things you had been doing were rather careless, and you could have gotten others killed. You wished your mother was around, you wished she had told you everything, but now you were starting to understand why she didn’t. This life wasn’t simple, and it was best to stay out of it.
🖤
“You are all unbelievable.”
“Us?” Chanhee questioned. “You’re the one keeping secrets from the Clave and making us all accomplices!”
“Apologies for caring about an innocent life!”
“We don’t know that.” Juyeon remarked. “This has gone on way longer than it should have! Let’s just find out what happened to her friend and be done with this. Hopefully the Clave doesn’t punish us for your actions.”
“You-”
Sangyeon was interrupted when his phone began to buzz. He checked to see he had gotten an email, opening up and skimming over the contents before letting out a defeated sigh. He went over to the nearest computer and brought up some files. Now everyone was staring at a familiar face, and a death certificate.
“Where did you-”
“I called the New York Institute for a favor since y/n mentioned she grew up there.” Sangyeon explained. “They just got back to me with this. A few years back a demon attacked and y/n’s mother was among the casualties. No wonder she hasn’t heard from her, no next of kin was listed.”
“This doesn’t-”
“Not now, Juyeon. I’ll go talk to her. The rest of you, break into teams and pick some cases to investigate.”
Sangyeon stepped out of the room, intending to find you when his phone buzzed again. When he checked this time he saw he was getting a call he couldn’t ignore. Instead he went to his office to take it.
“Hello?”
“Did you see the file I sent you?”
“Yes. Thank you for the information, I owe you one.”
“It’s no problem. I feared I wouldn’t be able to help you find a mundane but in a rather unfortunate stroke of luck their passing involved the shadow world. My condolences.”
“At least I have answers.”
“True. Although I hate to do this, but I must ask, how did you come across this woman?”
Sangyeon sighed. “It’s complicated.”
“Does it have something to do with her being a former shadowhunter?”
“So she wasn’t just some mundane. How do you know she was a former shadowhunter? I couldn’t access those records without a formal request to the Clave.”
“A senior shadowhunter here recognized her.”
“Do you know what happened?”
“I don’t have the finer details, but according to my source she went missing after a mission. When neither she or her team returned they were all presumed dead. Yet over a year later she resurfaced. Her injuries weren’t too severe, but she had no memory of the last year. In the end she chose to leave the Clave and the shadowhunter life behind.”
“I see. Your source wouldn’t happen to know if she was ever with someone, or had a child, would they?”
“There was no next of kin. The Clave has no record of any relationships, shadowhunter or mundane, and there is certainly no record of a child. Although, if you’re asking, I guess that’s what brought this woman to your attention.”
“Something like that.”
“I guess you haven’t reported this to the Clave either.”
“You know what they’re like. I need information, and my shadowhunters aren’t all so trusting. It’d be foolish not to investigate and come to my own conclusions.”
“I understand, but you need to be careful. This woman went though a lot of trouble to hide a child from the Clave and the mundane world. One doesn’t go to such lengths without good reason.”
“I’m aware, and I’ll proceed with caution. Thanks, Isabelle.”
“My pleasure.”
Sangyeon took a moment after the call to compose himself. There was a lot of new information swimming in his head, but he knew he couldn’t share everything just yet. Still, for now he needed to talk to you. He made his way to your room, knocking on the door before peeking in. That’s when he realized you were actually gone. He swore under his breath and returned to the others.
“You all seriously let her leave?”
“Wait, she actually left?” Kevin questioned. “I thought-”
“Go find her, now!”
“I know where she lives.” Eric mentioned. “I’ll go.”
“I’m coming with you.” Younghoon volunteered. “Let’s go.”
🖤
The bus ride back home felt bittersweet. You were literally leaving behind a world of fantasy to return to your normal life. After a small adventure it was time to wake up and return to reality. Unfortunately your friend was still missing, but you hadn’t given up on finding them. When you got back to your place you dropped your bag on the floor, taking in your surroundings. This was home, it had been for so long, but at the moment it just felt so lonely. As you stood around in your solemn state your stomach suddenly growled. It was getting pretty late and you hadn’t eaten yet. You figured you’d order take out when you suddenly heard a knock at your door. You weren’t expecting anyone, and your first thought was that it was one of the shadowhunters. You didn’t care to hear their words, but you answered the door anyway.
“What do you-”
“I brought pizza and wings!!!”
Your annoyance, your exhaustion, it all washed away as your missing friend greeted you and embraced you in a hug. For a moment you thought you were hallucinating, but you felt her warmth, her body, and you hugged back tightly.
“Avary…”
“You ready for girls’ night?”
Avary had a huge smile on her face and let herself in, leaving you standing by the door in stunned silence. You still couldn’t believe your eyes. She was really here, you even pinched yourself to make sure you weren’t dreaming.
“Come on girl, let’s eat.”
“Avary…”
“Yeah? What’s up? Anything exciting happen at work?”
“I… I… where have you been?”
“Huh? What are you talking about?”
“Avary you’ve been missing for over eight months.”
“What? Oh, you mean my sabbatical.”
“Sabbatical? You went on sabbatical for nearly a year and told no one!?”
“That’s kinda the point of it. You get away from technology and your normal life and just relax.”
“Avary you were reported missing. I’ve been looking for you and your parents-”
“Yeah, I called them a while ago. They weren’t exactly happy with the sabbatical either, but they’re glad I’m back and alive.”
“So that’s it? Do you have any idea how worried I was about you!?”
“I’m sorry… I just needed a break from everything.”
“Gosh, don’t fucken do that again.”
You went over and hugged Avary tightly, still in shock but truly happy that she was alive and well. There was no need to dwell on the bad things, so you just focused on catching up with your friend. Although it wasn’t long before there was another knock at your door. This time you didn’t think about who it could be, so when you answered and saw Eric and Younghoon your smile dropped.
“You really did go home, huh?” Eric mentioned. “We didn’t think you were being serious about leaving.”
“There’s no reason for me to stay at the Institute.”
“Look, about what happened, we need to talk.”
“Nothing that was said was wrong. Besides, I’m done with the shadow world.”
“You don’t-”
“Y/n, who’s at the door.”
The two boys looked over as they heard another voice, then they saw a girl come into view. They both immediately recognized her.
“Wait, is that your missing friend?” Younghoon asked. “What is she doing here?”
“Apparently she was on sabbatical… but I don’t know if I really believe that…”
“Yeah. When you left some of us began looking at the missing persons cases, we even went farther back and found that some missing people actually came back. They all strangely claimed to have taken a sabbatical too.”
“What?”
“That’s one too many mundanes sharing a story, but of course local law enforcement doesn’t care. It’s just one less missing person to worry about.”
“So you really think downworlders are involved?”
“Kidnapping mundanes, wiping their memories, and dragging them into the shadow world. It’s not exactly new, but this big of an operation is.”
“I think we need to talk to your friend.” Eric said. “If you don’t mind.”
“I think you’re right.”
You invited the two in, telling your friend they were detectives and had a few questions about her sabbatical. Despite leaving and returning voluntarily, she had been reported as missing, and they needed to get some information in order to close the case properly. You sat with them while they did their little interrogation, although your mind wandered a bit. Other people had gone missing and come back, and the circumstances were too similar for it to not be connected. The police may not care, but you knew more than them. This was certainly odd. Whoever was taking mundanes clearly got something out of it, but to kidnap and then return someone, there had to be more going on here.
“Where were you before you disappeared on your sabbatical?” Younghoon questioned. “That is if you remember.”
“Uh… kinda… I went clubbing that night. It was fun, but it really made me realize I needed to get away.”
“What club was it, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“It was a new one for me… what was the name… oh, Twisted Night. Great place, highly recommend.”
“Twisted Night… okay, that’s all the questions we have for you.”
“No problem, sorry to cause some trouble.”
“We’re all just glad you’re back.”
“I’ll show them out.” You got up. “Give me a moment.”
The whole thing seemed to end pretty quick, and you knew they had figured something out. Even if it really didn’t matter to you anymore, you still wanted to know.
“What did you learn?”
“I think we know who’s responsible for the missing mundanes.” Eric said. “Or at least we know where to go looking.”
“What do you mean?”
“Your friend mentioned going to Twisted Night before she disappeared. That club is run by a warlock and allows both mundanes and downworlders inside. If we focus on the club, we’ll probably find that some of our other missing persons went there too.”
“Look, I know you said you just wanted your friend back.” Younghoon explained. “But you’re still more than welcome to stay with us. You are one of us.”
“I don’t really think I am, I never was, but I would like to see this to the end. My friend went missing in the shadow world and came back unharmed. I’m grateful but concerned. I need to know what happened to her, for my own sake.”
“We still need to gather evidence before we go check out the club, but we’ll likely pay the owner a visit tomorrow. I’ll let you know when to meet us.”
“Thanks.”
🖤
You stayed with Avary that night, just focused on having a good time and getting your lives back on track. She stayed the night with you, and thankfully nothing happened. Come morning you both shared breakfast and then you insisted she go back home to see her parents. Her sabbatical may have been good for her, but her life was likely messy and needed some work. She agreed, but didn’t mind it at all. Later that evening you got a message from Younghoon telling you to meet them at the Twisted Night and providing you with the address.
As you gathered your things and got ready to go you wound up staring at yourself in the mirror. A few of your runes were visible despite your clothes. For years now they had been a part of you, and a reminder of your mother. Once this was all over they’d disappear. The realization was upsetting, to lose something that had been with you your whole life, but at the same time it was never really yours. There was no point dwelling on it or dragging things out. It was never good to stay where you weren’t wanted. When you arrived to the club you noticed a few of the others around as well. You could see that Juyeon wanted to say something about you, but he was quickly silenced by another.
“The club isn’t open for business until later, but that shouldn’t be a problem for us.” Jacob stated. “Let’s go.”
Despite not being open there were still two bouncers posted at the door. Sangyeon spoke with them, asking to speak with the owner. It took a moment but you were ultimately let inside. The place was huge, and looked rather nice. A bunch of employees were present, cleaning and setting up for the night ahead. You got a few looks as you entered, but nobody spoke to you. One of the bouncers led you towards the back, letting you into one of the private rooms. There you were met with an older woman who was drinking while watching some dancers. Although it seemed more like she was working as she would give the girls comments. She put a pause on everything when she noticed she had guests.
“Take a break girls.” The lady looked towards all of you. “I don’t usually get shadowhunters here, so to what do I owe the pleasure?”
“I’m afraid this isn’t a social call, Madam Jiaying.”
“Business then, well, I assure you I follow all the laws and regulations in my club, both mundane and otherwise. So, what brings you here?”
“Our recent investigations show that a handful of mundanes have gone missing, and they’re last known location has been the Twisted Night.”
“You think I have something to do with the missing mundanes?”
“No, but I do believe someone is using your club as a hunting ground.”
Jiaying sighed. “Can’t trust anyone these days. Well, you’re welcome to speak with my staff, and I could have someone show you security footage.”
“That would be appreciated.”
“Although, I have a better idea.”
“Which is?”
“Why don’t we have a more private discussion about this.”
“Huh?”
Before any of you could properly register the words spoken, a yellow gas began to fill the room. It moved quickly and it was thick, impeding your vision almost immediately. You were all quick to try and cover your face, but whatever this was, it was strong and likely infused with magic. One breath was enough to make you dizzy, and one by one you collapsed until you were all knocked out.
🖤
Your head was pounding as you regained consciousness. Although once you had enough of your senses back you realized what had happened and were ready to spring into action. That’s when you discovered your hands were chained above your head, and you were actually hanging a bit off the ground. Even your ankles were shackled together and chained to the floor so you couldn’t use your legs. You struggled in your restraints, but it was no use. The others were in a similar predicament, but only a few were awake.
“Sangyeon… what do we do?”
“Break out, although this won’t be easy.”
“That is correct.” Jiaying stepped into the room. “I certainly don’t plan to let a bunch of shadowhunters run off now.”
“So you were the one behind all the missing mundanes.”
“It’s a good market. If there is demand why not provide.”
“What did you do to my friend!?” You yelled.
“Your friend? You’d need to be more specific dear.”
“I get what you’re doing, offering mundanes to werewolves and vampires, but you let some go after keeping them for months! You said this was a business, so what did those provide for you! What did you do to them!?”
“Ah, you picked up on that, huh?”
“Answer me!”
“I assure you your friend is fine. I might have drawn some blood here and there but I merely borrowed their body for a few months.”
“What?”
“You didn’t do enough digging. All I’m really doing is helping the downworlder’s numbers increase. A quick mind wipe and a new life, but as I’m sure you know, making new warlocks isn’t so easy. I specifically need girls for that.”
“What? You…” Realization hit you. “What is wrong with you!? Are you insane!”
“Your friend is none the wiser to her contributions, and she’s very happy too, isn’t she? I promise you I compensated her nicely as well. Although, as for you…” Jiaying approached, circling around your body. “A female shadowhunter. If my demon could get you pregnant, the child would be incredibly powerful.”
“Leave her alone!” Hyunjae spat. “You can’t mix shadowhunter blood with that of a demons!”
“With my own little shadowhunter around, I can certainly try, can’t I?”
“You’re already dead.” You snapped. “I’ll kill you for what you did to my friend! For all the other mundanes you hurt!”
“Easy now dear, that is not the attitude to have for the task that awaits you.”
“Fuck you.”
“Hm, I knew you wouldn’t be agreeable, but I have ways to make you cooperate.”
For a moment Jiaying disappeared, and you struggled in your restraints. There had to be a way out, but soon enough your body was paralyzed and the warlock returned.
“I’m going to give you a taste of what will happen to you if you don’t behave. It’s a special venom that’s hard to acquire, but well worth the price.”
With your body paralyzed you were helpless as you felt a needle in your neck. Soon you began to feel this fire course through your veins and you screamed. The rest of the boys yelled and tried to free themselves, but all they could do was watch. The initial burn hurt like nothing else, but then it began to die down. The pain faded and you began to recover, rather confused about what was happening.
“Is… is that it?”
“You should be howling in pain by now, plagued by hallucinations and fear. How are you fine? No one is immune except for…”
You were still a bit out of it, but you felt a sudden chill when Jiaying burned away your jacket and shirt, leaving you with your bra exposed.
“These are shadowhunter runes…” Jiaying circled around you, examining all your marks. “Ah, this one here, on your back and out of reach, it’s not like the others. This is meant to suppress something… I think I have any idea what.”
The chains that held you disappeared and you collapsed to the ground. You tried to get up, wanting to fight when you began to feel a deeper burning sensation along your back.
“Let’s remove that mysterious mark, shall we?”
“Stop it!” Jacob yelled. “The Institute knows we’re here! This whole operation is over!”
“If I’m correct about this, she’s worth more than this little operation.”
At first the pain was only along your back, but then it began to spread. Every rune on your body began to burn, worse than when they were first placed on you. Despite the pain you were still somewhat aware of your surroundings, and you noticed how your runes were burning away. You didn’t understand what was happening, but it was only the beginning. As your runes faded away your hands began to hurt. When you looked down you could see you had developed claws and they hurt like hell.
“Well, well, well, would you look at that? Aren’t you something special.” Jiaying knelt down before you, grabbing your chin so you’d meet her gaze. “Do you even know what you are?”
“What’s happening to me? What did you do!?”
“I merely showed you the truth. You’re not just another shadowhunter, but a warlock.”
“… what…?”
“Rumors had been going around, and I’m rather glad to see they’re true. How fortunate that I found you. Your father has been looking for you and he’ll be very glad to see you.”
“… my… my father…?”
“The only ones immune to Yanluo’s venom is his own offspring and he’s very protective of his children.”
“I… I don’t understand…”
“You really don’t know much about our world, do you? That’s alright. There’s plenty of time to learn. Now, I should probably deal with the shadowhunters so we can be on our way.”
“… no… no, don’t hurt them, leave them out of this…”
“The shadowhunters would kill you if they ever learned about you. These people are not your friends. Besides, we can’t have anyone knowing about you.”
Even if things had fallen apart between you and them, it didn’t mean you wished them harm. You had no experience or any real knowledge on how to fight a warlock, but you didn’t feel completely helpless. The only option you really had was yourself. So when Jiaying turned her back, you pounced on her, digging your claws in deep. Her screams filled the room but you didn’t stop, ripping your claws out and scratching her up. Something else took over at that moment and nothing else mattered. You didn’t register your name being screamed or when the chains holding the others disappeared.
“Y/n that’s enough!”
You were pulled off and dragged away from the body you had created. Reality slowly started seeping back in as did the smell of blood. You looked at your hands, a scream building in your throat, but a hand was quickly over your eyes, startling you.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, everything is gonna be fine, this isn’t your fault.”
“I… I didn’t…”
“Sh, sh, I know, I know.”
Out of everyone you didn’t expect Chanhee to be holding you, but you didn’t care about the finer details right now. You were terrified and you just wanted to wake up from this nightmare. Without realizing tears were streaming down your face, and you started to quietly sob, not entirely sure what was happening.
“I guess this explains everything.” Juyeon mumbled.
“So you’re done being a jerk?”
“Yeah, but what are we going to do now? No one has ever dealt with this before?”
“Well we certainly can’t tell the Clave about her now.” Eric said. “No one would ever see her again.”
“For starters we need to get out of here.” Sangyeon stated.
“And how do we get the warlock to come quietly?” Kevin asked.
“The runes aren’t completely faded.” Younghoon mentioned. “She’s still technically a shadowhunter. We have a rune for sleep.”
“New runes always hurt.”
“Any other ideas?”
“I’ll do it.” Sunwoo volunteered.
You had shut your own eyes, still wishing to just wake up. Even without your sight you felt another presence near you, getting a bit nervous.
“Hey, hey, it’s just me.” Sunwoo’s voice put you at ease. “We’re gonna get out of here, but I need you to trust me right now.”
“I do…”
“Okay. I know of a rune that can help you, but it’s gonna sting.”
“Can I… can I still use runes?”
“The ones you have aren’t completely gone.”
“… okay… do it…”
Sunwoo carefully grabbed your arm, finding a place where he could place the rune. There was no point in giving you a countdown, so he just did what he had to do. You yelled, but held yourself together before darkness swallowed you whole. Your body relaxed and went limp in Chanhee’s arms. The two looked you over to make sure you were alright, then they all gathered to leave. Thankfully it was late into the night, so there weren’t too many prying eyes, and they managed to return to the Institute without being seen. Even if they wanted to handle this as best they could, it was only normal for them to look you up below the Institute. They didn’t know what to do, and you surely had no idea what you were actually capable of.
“Sangyeon-”
“We’ll figure something out. She’s still one of us, and we have to protect her. Somehow.”

"The Night He Fell"
The rain came down harder than the streetlights could pierce. Long silver lines blurring the edges of the world into a watercolor painting.
As he jogged toward the covered entrance of the arts building, Sunwoo shook out his drenched hair. He hadn’t planned on staying so late, but one hangout just led to another, and before he knew it, he was stuck.
Phone battery: 3%.
Umbrella: none.
Luck: nonexistent.
He was thingking about running to the bus stop while leaning against the stone wall and wiping the rain from his eyelashes when he noticed a movement.
Across the pavement, moving carefully through the rain, was... you.
A figure cloaked in soft neutrals, an umbrella in hand, the delicate outline of a sketchbook tucked under your arm.
You didn’t seem rushed.
You moved with a kind of quiet poise, steps measured even against the chaotic downpour.
Your presence felt like an untouched part of the storm itself. Gentle. Inevitable.
He barely had time to blink before you noticed him.
Your eyes met, briefly.
And then, with no hesitation, you adjusted your path.
You stepped closer.
You held out your umbrella—wordlessly, politely, respectfully—just enough to cover him too.
No dramatic gestures.
No words of pity.
Just the quiet offer of shelter from a stranger to another stranger.
For a second, Sunwoo forgot everything.
The noise of the rain faded, the chill on his skin dulled.
All he could see was the faint trace of rain on your lashes, the composed curve of your mouth, the faint scent of clean linen and paint, and your beautiful face.
"You're getting soaked," you said simply, voice low and melodic, not flirtatious, not overly sweet.
Just kind.
He opened his mouth, then closed it again, lost somewhere between stunned gratitude and a kind of awe he had never felt before.
"...Thank you," he managed eventually, voice rougher than he intended.
You only offered a small, almost shy smile, eyes lowering modestly as if not to overwhelm him, and that small grace struck him harder than any wild declarations ever could.
Without asking, you adjusted the umbrella slightly higher to accommodate his height.
Your fingers brushed the metal handle close to his.
A small, accidental touch.
Sunwoo stiffened, breath catching.
You didn't notice. Or perhaps you did and were too polite to react.
Instead, you gestured toward the bus stop ahead.
"Let's get out of the rain," you said, tone even, like this was nothing more than common decency.
And then you walked beside him—a careful, respectful distance apart—sheltering both of you without once breaking the graceful stillness that seemed to radiate from you naturally.
***
Sunwoo didn’t say much after that.
He couldn’t.
He was too busy memorizing everything:
The curve of your wrist as you held the umbrella.
The way the rain shimmered against your hair.
The soft, unhurried way you blinked when he stole glances at you.
By the time you reached the bus stop, you only offered a polite nod before turning away.
No expectation.
No introduction.
No asking for anything in return.
You simply disappeared into the crowd, leaving Sunwoo standing there, half-soaked, heart thundering violently against his ribs.
And just like that—
He was ruined.

Scene: The Growing Obsession
The rain has long since stopped, but for Sunwoo, the image of you in the rain, offering him your umbrella, has never faded.
It haunted him like a melody, a song that he couldn't stop thinking about. He found himself thinking about you all the time.
Everything about you, not just the way you appeared that evening, composed and calm in the face of the storm. The way you spoke, the way you moved, the way you seemed untouched by his usual charm.
He became obsessed, though he’d never admit it aloud.
It started with curiosity, an innocent wish to learn more about the girl who didn’t bat an eye when he passed her. However, it didn’t end there.
It grew into something more.
Something darker.
It had been weeks since that night, and Sunwoo hadn’t been able to let go.
He had seen you around the hallways in the campus.
He overheard your name, Shin Sooa.
He knows now that you’re a senior at the college, studying art. You’re in a different major than him—he's in business, a world of numbers and strategy, while you’re lost in your paintings and sketches.
It was clear that you’re a quiet presence at the college. Unlike the other students, you didn’t attract attention. You didn’t try to make yourself known.
The first time he noticed you in the building after that rainy night, his heart skipped a beat.
Sunwoo couldn’t help it. He needed to know everything about you.
He made it his mission to find out more, to get closer to you, but from the shadows.
Sunwoo began to visit the art department more often, learning the places you frequent. The corner of the café. The quiet benches outside the campus library. The art studios late in the afternoon when the world had quieted down.
He noticed how you always brought your sketchbook with you, how you’d sit by yourself, sketching for hours without a care in the world.
Sunwoo also learned that you only had a small group of friends. He’d overhear the occasional conversation as he lingered in the halls, pretending to be busy with his own work but always watching you.
You were different, completely removed from the social games that he and his friends played.
And that was what fascinated him the most.
Sunwoo was waiting for you one day in the hallway outside the art department, hands stuffed in his pocket.
From around the corner, he could hear your voice.
You were conversing with your friend, whom he had occasionally seen with you. They were giggling, but not in the manner he was accustomed to hearing in his social circle. It wasn’t loud or flirtatious. It was serene, much like your demeanor.
It made something inside him tighten.
“You’re always so quiet, Sooa,” your female friend said, her voice teasing but gentle. “Do you ever talk to anyone outside our little group?”
You laughed softly. It made his chest ache.
“I don’t have to,” you replied, your tone calm, indifferent. “I’m happy with what I do. All I need is my art.”
Sunwoo's throat tightened with breath.
Something dark—something possessive—something that wanted to have you all to himself, was stirring inside him.
You didn’t need anyone but your art, but what if he could make you need him instead?
What if he ended up being the person you relied on, the one you couldn’t live without?
A cold shiver ran down his spine at the thought. He pushed himself away from the wall, the sense of urgency pulling him back toward his usual spot in the business wing.
He had to shake it off. He couldn’t let this obsession control him.
Not yet, at least.
Not until he knew more.
Not until he could find a way to make you his.
For the next few days, Sunwoo made it a point to follow you from a distance, always lurking just out of sight.
Sunwoo started to memorize your routine.
It made him feel a sick satisfaction, like he was the only one who truly saw you for who you were.
He was getting closer.
Closer to knowing everything about you, to finally having you within his reach.
And when that time came... when you finally needed him... he’d be ready.
***
Scene: "A Brush Strokes the Heart"
The wooden tables and walls of the cafe are bathed in a warm, golden glow as the late afternoon light streams in through the windows.
You took a seat by the window in your usual spot. You were absorbed in your drawing while your sketchbook rested softly on the table in front of you.
But there was a shift in the air.
A pair of clear, deliberate footsteps approached your table.
You were accustomed to people walking by, so you didn't look up right away. But, there was something different about these footsteps.
He slowed down just as he passed, and you sensed the presence lingering for a moment too long.
“Excuse me. Do you mind if I sit here for a moment?”
You glanced up, your pencil pausing mid-stroke, and you blinked, momentarily surprised to see a random handsome guy who wanted to sit with you.
“Of course.” You nodded politely, giving him a small, graceful smile.
He smiled back and then took a seat across from you.
“I’m Kim Sunwoo.” He introduced himself, flashing you a boyish grin. “Business major. Sophomore.”
“Shin Sooa… Final-year student. Fine Arts major.”
Even hearing you say your own name made his heart skip.
You offered a small, delicate smile, just enough to be polite but not encouraging anything more.
It only made him want to chase you even harder.
“We met a few nights ago. It was raining... You helped me when I was completely drenched. Umbrella?”
Your eyes widened slightly, recognition dawning in them.
"Ah... that was you?" you said, voice light, almost surprised.
“Yeah… I wanted to say thank you.”
“It’s no problem.”
After a brief pause, Sunwoo cleared his throat.
“Sunbaenim, I've seen you here a lot lately,” he said. His voice was friendly but not intrusive. “You always seem so focused on your sketches. I was curious, but I didn't want to interrupt.”
Your curiosity piqued, so you tilted your head slightly.
Although Sunwoo is known for his easy-going confidence, you were now seeing a softer, more reserved side of him.
“I enjoy drawing,” you said plainly in a steady yet gentle tone. “It helps me relax.”
“I can see that.” Sunwoo noded, his eyes lingering on your sketchbook, his curiosity evident but tempered by a sense of respect. “I’m not good at art myself, but it’s fascinating—how people can express themselves with just a few lines.”
His gaze stayed on your drawing for a few moments before he met your eyes again, this time with a small, amused smile.
“I think you have a special talent for it. Your work feels... different from what I usually see.”
You raised an eyebrow slightly, still maintaining that calm demeanor. “Different? How so?”
Sunwoo hesitated for a moment, choosing his words carefully. “It looks... calming? Like it’s capturing a moment, not just a picture. Most people rush through things, but your art has this quiet, peaceful vibe. It’s... graceful.”
He paused, then added, almost as an afterthought, “Just like you, Sunbaenim.”
You didn’t react immediately, but his words lingered in your mind.
There was something about the way he speaks—soft, sincere.
Sunwoo was being careful, almost as if he was testing the waters, unsure of how far he could go.
“Normally, I don’t draw in front of people...” With your fingers gently tracing the edge of your sketchbook, you confessed.
Sunwoo reclined in his chair, his expression thoughtful. “I get that. People can be a bit... overwhelming.”
He met your gaze, and there was something in his eyes that softens his usual playful demeanor.
“But I don’t think you need to hide, Sunbaenim. You’re not like everyone else. Even when you remain silent, I can tell just by looking at you.”
His words hit you with unexpected weight.
“Maybe one day, you could show me more of your art?” he suggested, his voice lower now, as if he was allowing the suggestion to sit between you. “I’m not good at art, but... I’d like to learn. Or at least understand it a little more... From you.”
You felt a soft stir in your chest, unsure of how to respond.
There was a part of you that was flattered by his interest, by the way he seemed to truly want to understand you.
You smiled softly, maintaining your composure. “I suppose I could show you. But... don’t expect too much. I’m not the best teacher.”
Sunwoo’s smile widened, a quiet satisfaction behind it. “I think I’ll learn something no matter what,” he said, his voice almost teasing now. “I’m not one to give up easily.”
He lets the words hung in the air between you, not quite a challenge, but not quite an invitation either.
And just like that, Sunwoo had already decided.
He was going to find a way into your world, whether it’s through your art or through something more.
The subtle intensity of his attention wasn’t accidental.
It was calculated.
And perhaps, without even realizing it, you were already drawn into his orbit.
summary: exhausted but deeply longing, Sunwoo shows up at your door just to be with you, even if time is short
—
He shouldn’t be here.
That’s the first thought in his head as he stands in front of your apartment door, shoulders tense beneath his hoodie, cap pulled low.
He’s exhausted.
His body aches from hours of rehearsals, his throat is still sore from recording, and he knows the van call is in a few hours.
But still, he’s here.
He punches in your door code with muscle memory. Quiet, practiced, like he’s done it a hundred times before. The soft beep of the lock feels impossibly loud in the stillness of the hallway.
He opens the door slowly, almost cautiously, unsure if you’re even awake.
But there you are—sitting on the couch in your oversized hoodie, blanket half-draped over you, laptop glowing with paused video footage.
And it’s him on the screen. Laughing, acting dumb, being loud. Probably from one of those old behind-the-scenes clips you always say makes you nostalgic.
You blink up at him, clearly surprised.
“Sunwoo?” you breathe.
“What are you doing here?”
His heart clenches a little. He didn’t mean to startle you. He didn’t mean to show up unannounced like some bad movie cliché. But all the words in his head suddenly tangle together, so he just gives you the truth.
“I missed you.”
Your face softens instantly. And just like that, the ache in his chest releases a little.
You move toward him without hesitation, wrapping your arms around him. He melts into your hug like it’s oxygen. Everything is quieter when he’s in your arms.
“I didn’t think I’d get to see you today,” you whisper.
“I didn’t think I’d make it here either,” he admits into your shoulder.
“But the second I finished, I didn’t even think about going home. My body just… brought me here.”
You guide him to the couch, and he sinks into it with a sigh. His head finds your lap automatically, and when your fingers slide into his hair, he nearly forgets how much his body hurts.
“I was just watching your old videos,” you say with a quiet laugh.
“Which one?” he mumbles, eyes closed.
“Idol Human Theatre, the chaotic one.”
“Ah, the one where Hyunjae-hyung’s jacket got ripped and Changmin-hyung was stuck in between and got dragged around while I unknowingly nearly choked Younghoon-hyung to death?”
You laugh again, and he smiles. That sound makes the entire day feel worth it.
Then there’s a pause. A long, warm silence where you just hold him, and he lets himself be held.
He almost forgets the time, the pressure, and the reality of everything waiting for him outside this apartment.
But then his phone vibrates in his pocket.
He doesn’t look. He knows what it says. Call time in a couple hours, no room for delay.
He opens his eyes, sees the way your face changes just slightly. You already know, too. You always do.
“I can’t stay long,” he says softly.
You nod, eyes calm but a little sad.
“It’s okay, you’re here now.”
His throat tightens. How do you always make it sound so simple when it’s anything but?
“I know this isn’t fair,” he says.
“I show up out of nowhere, give you barely enough, and then leave.”
You shake your head.
“You came, that’s what matters.”
He looks up at you, eyes searching.
“I missed you so bad,” he says.
“It was gnawing at me. I thought I could power through the day, be professional, focus on work. But I kept thinking about you. Wondering if you’d eaten, if you were lonely… if you missed me too.”
Your hand finds his and squeeze it in reassurance.
“I did.”
He leans up, and you meet him halfway. The kiss is slow. Familiar. Not desperate, but full. Like a breath being shared.
“I love you,” he murmurs when he pulls away.
“More than I know how to say. Even when I don’t get to text or call. Even when I’m too tired to show it properly.”
You smile, even if it’s tinged with something bittersweet.
“I know.”
He rests his forehead against yours and lingers.
Eventually, he has to stand. Pull his mask back on. Re-arm himself with the layers of distance that fame requires.
But just before he steps out, he turns back.
“Next time, I’ll stay longer,” he promises.
“But even if it’s just two hours… I’ll always come home to you.”
And then he disappears into the quiet night.
He shouldn’t be here. But he knows, deep down, there’s nowhere else he wants to be more.
