Celibacy isn’t a waste of our sexuality; it’s a wonderful way of fulfilling it. It’s allowing our sexual feelings to point us to the reality of the gospel.

Voting for Hillary because she’s not Trump only serves to push the Democratic party further to the right. The whole reason we’re stuck with these two good awful candidates is because we’ve been pushing this platform with our voting record. Voting for the lesser of two evils only empowers evil… it only makes it worse.

There is literally an entire election (2000) serving to remind people why this is a terrible idea.

Voting third party isn’t just a waste of a vote, it is empowering the electoral college to decide for you.

Did you know North Korea is a democracy, according to voting principles? Kim Jong Un is the only name on the ballot and not voting or not filling his name in is the equivalent of treason. Although you won’t get killed for voting third party, what will happen is the electoral college will go “well that’s nice. Who won the majority of this state?” And the answer will be trump or Clinton.

Except it’s actually just the opposite of that. 

Voting for the two parties empowers a two party system (go figure) that rules the electoral college like a monopoly. If no one ever votes third party then your vote doesn’t matter anyway. If you live in a blue state… your vote doesn’t matter. If you live in a red state… your vote doesn’t matter. However, if a third party gets even 5% of the popular vote in a general election they become eligible for public grants of up to $96 million. The more people vote for a third party, the more funding and influence that party has. The more influence that party has, the more they can chip away at the two party system. The more the two party system goes away the less you’re going to see shit shows like the 2016 election. If you want another election like this one then stick to the status quo… Just know that that attitude is what got us here in the first place. 

Also, the 2000 election went the way it did because Gore made terrible campaign choices. He lost his home state (Tenn), he didn’t allow Bill Clinton to campaign for him in Arkansas and ended up losing that state, and then there’s the shenanigans in Florida that Nader had nothing to do with. Also, that is completely different because Nader was the only viable third party candidate. He was representing the Green Party which is a liberal alternative party, so he would have only been getting votes from the liberals who may have voted for Gore. In this election, the most viable third party candidate is Gary Johnson who is representing the Libertarian Party which is a conservative alternative party, which means that he will be getting votes primarily from fiscal conservatives that would otherwise presumably vote for Trump. Then you have Jill Stein representing the Green Party this year, who would presumably get fringe voters that would have otherwise voted for Clinton. So it evens out in the end. 

You can’t use the third party candidates as a scape goat for the 2000 election because there were so many different factors. Bush took more votes from Gore than Nader did, and the election was ultimately decided by the US Supreme Court.

Ultimately, the more viable parties available, the better. With more viable political parties comes broader representation. That’s only ever a good thing.

Primarily excellent points, but with one major issue: by not endorsing a singular third party, you’ll be splitting this revolutionary power between candidates like Stein and Johnson. What would have normally been 7% for one party may not be 3.5 for both (although I know that those that would vote green and libertarian aren’t exactly interchangeable)

You’re right to say that my suggestion only fuels the two party system, but I don’t feel like this election year is the year to shake things up. You use number references like 5%, implying that this is a fairly low threshold. You’d be right. The problem is, how many third parties have earned that much in our nation’s history? The only one I can think of at this early hour is the progressive party. If out of the blue entire states start going the direction of Johnson or Stein, I’d consider them as the grassroots movement we need, however, people at their core are politically stagnant. Whether that comes in the forms of “values voters” or “single issue voters”. People latch onto candidates quickly.

In summary, political activism is a great concept. I was for Sanders in the primary season (because of the political movement he stood for) and was lucky enough to even attend a rally! However, realism sets in to the fact that the most Johnson or Stein will likely do is lose the election for one of the major candidates. I think if we want to solidify the parties, it would be better to do it on 1) an incumbent year 2) a year where one of the people running isn’t a frightening bigot whose character flaws I could spend another few paragraphs listing off why that person should never hit the Oval Office. Set sights on 2020, or 2024, playing a long game to establish a third party (ONE third party) will serve better than those

I strongly disagree that this isn’t the year to do it. I think that this is the only year to do it. Just look at the 2012 election. The Democrats where all unified behind Obama and the Republicans were all pretty much unified behind Romney, and yet Johnson still managed to get 1% of the popular vote. If he got 1% in 2012 with almost no disenfranchisement, image what he could do this year when there is disenfranchisement across the board. The Republican party is so divided over Trump that he could almost certainly get to 5% just by pulling from republicans who want a viable, fiscally conservative candidate. Come 2020, the door will probably be closed. 

Also, I’m not convinced by the “Trump is a monster” rhetoric when it is used to support Hillary. You could list another few paragraphs about how Trump is unfit to be president, but I could also list another few paragraphs about how Hillary Clinton is a foreign policy nightmare waiting to happen, about how her corruption has lead her to commit war crimes and destabilize the middle east, about how she is a corporate shill and receives support from Gulf State monarchies and neo-conservative war-hawks, etc. They’re both monsters. Our best bet is to vote third party and then hope that the Senate is the opposite party of whoever gets elected. Then just hold on and try again in 2020.

There’s highkey a reason why no previous President of the United States, actively supports Donald Trump as president.

To all of you who have recently turned 18, or will be 18 by November; please vote. Hillary Clinton is literally the only thing standing between our country staying afloat and a fascist running it into the ground.

A former KKK Grand Wizard has decided to run for senate because of the success of Trump’s hateful rhetoric. Here’s a quote, “Thousands of special interest groups stand up for African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Jewish-Americans, etc. etc., The fact is that European-Americans need at least one man in the United States Senate, one man in the Congress, who will represent their rights and heritage.” A KKK member is actively seeking to help the most privileged race in the United States, and demolish decades of work that has been laid out to help people of color. If Trump is elected, I can guarantee hate crimes will reach an all time high, the KKK will have more of its members in our government publicly, Roe V Wade will be overturned; which means thousands of women will die from unsafe medical procedures. LGBT conversion therapy will be further legalized and protected by laws, which will ultimately lead to mass suicides of youth. Cuts are going to be made to welfare programs, which will lead to the poor literally starving to death. Our national parks will be privately owned, which means landmarks and places of nature will now be places where billionaires can frack and pollute what few miles of clean land we have left. The fire of islamophobia will be fueled, which means more hate and prejudice against innocent human beings.

This isn’t even about the lesser of two evils anymore, it’s about our country staying intact, it’s a matter of life or death. Don’t waste your vote by refusing to vote at all, or tossing it a random third party candidate, we cannot afford the risk of having a Trump presidency.

If you think a man who has spread hate through my country like wildfire is okay to have as president, don’t even bother arguing with me. I don’t have time time for people who don’t care about human rights. Trump is a fucking monster whose racist rhetoric has inspired a fucking terrorist group member to run for senate, that’s kid of a big deal. Who knows how many more neo-nazis and racists and KKK members are going to be inspired to join government and fucking kill us??

Maybe you can afford a Trump presidency, but there are people who aren’t white, straight, cis-gendered, Christian males. If Trump becomes president it means death for women, death for POC, death for Muslims, death for Jews, death for people from the LGBTQ+ community, it means death for anyone who doesn’t fit into a cookie cutter of “ideal” race,religion, sexuality or gender.

We can’t have Trump as president. Not all of us are cishet white Christian men who can survive a Trump presidency. Our best bet is to vote for someone who actually stands a chance at winning this election. Hillary Clinton is the only thing stopping Trump. Sure enough Hillary has made some poor decisions, but would you rather have a president who isn’t the optimal choice or a literal fascist?? Like the whole “they’re both monsters” argument doesn’t work anymore.

We can obviously tell who is the common cold of presidents and who is the super-virus with the power to wipe out all the western seaboard.

Vote with your conscience and vote with the concern of human rights in your head. If you’re the type of person who voted third party for this election of all elections I hope you’ll be proud of yourself when Trump steps into office and people start dropping like flies. Your points are valid and your argument is solid, but voting third party is too much of a risk right now.

Besides that, if part of your argument is to rely on hope, that’s incredibly unreliable. We can’t all cross our fingers and hope while we’re voting third party (which won’t make any sort of dent) that enough people will vote for Hillary so we don’t get Trump. The idea makes sense in theory, but will only disappoint us and give us a president we don’t want.

No one is advocating Trump. Sure Trump would be bad for American minority populations. No doubt. But a Hillary presidency will look like pure genocide for millions (MILLIONS) of innocent women and children in the middle east, as well as the constant threat of nuclear war. 

You might be able to afford a Hillary presidency, but innocent middle easterners can’t and they wont be dropping like flies… they’ll be dropping like raindrops in a hurricane. In fact, they already are because of her and her policies. Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya… that’s her legacy. You wanna talk about human rights, look at the Syrian refugee crisis that she basically caused.
