🎥 “Testing, testing, is this thing on? Hey, control, are we live?” 🎥
Currently checking for any interest here for “Max Headroom: Forty Years Later… Fanzine”! This community zine is a celebration of the anniversary of “Max Headroom: Twenty Minutes into the Future” in 2027, and the Max Headroom franchise as a whole.
What is a zine? Zines are a type of print media, with a small run, of different media, typically based around a theme, a franchise, or a counter culture movement.
We are hoping to recruit at least five artists and writers to join the team of contributors! If that sounds like you, please comment below and I’ll reach out when the application opens later this month.
Max Headroom was a cultural icon of the mid-to-late 1980s, spanning three television shows, a television film, a Christmas special, ad campaigns for Coca Cola, and featured on a multitude of different merchandise from pinback buttons to skate boards. His backstory was introduced to the world in “Max Headroom”, premiering on Channel 4 (UK) in 1985. Two years later, ABC greenlit “Max Headroom: Twenty Minutes into the Future”, a series that expanded the concepts of the original film, a cyberpunk future dystopia in which television network ratings and corporations rule civilization. Many of the conflicts and ideas explored in this series are issues we face today, making it as relevant as ever before. In 1988, after fourteen episodes were produced, the show was abruptly cancelled. All other Max related media and commercial campaigns wrapped up, and the character - and the iconic dystopian cyberpunk world- left from the airwaves by 1989. Despite numerous attempts to revive the character, only handful of tongue-in-cheek commercials and a singular cameo in Pixels (2015), no series reboots have passed the script phase.
This zine’s goal is to show that there is a living and thriving fan base for this series and Max Headroom forty years (and twenty minutes more) after his introduction, showcasing artwork, writing, and in other creative outlets. More information is coming in the next few weeks for involvement. This zine cannot be possible without getting the word out there first, please share and repost if possible.
