Writing Tips
Punctuating Dialogue
✧
➸ “This is a sentence.”
➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.
➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”
➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”
➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”
➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”
➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.
“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.
“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”
➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”
➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”
However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!
➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.
If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)
➸ “This applies to dashes too. Inside quotations dashes typically express—“
“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.
➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.
➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”
➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.
“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”
➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.
“This shows it’s the same character continuing to speak.”
omg this is so helpful
!!!!!!!
I made these as a way to compile all the geographical vocabulary that I thought was useful and interesting for writers. Some descriptors share categories, and some are simplified, but for the most part everything is in its proper place. Not all the words are as useable as others, and some might take tricky wording to pull off, but I hope these prove useful to all you writers out there!
(save the images to zoom in on the pics)
Oh, that’s very helpful indeed!
$50,000 immediately dropped into my bank account wouldn't improve EVERYTHING but boy it sure would be a grand, sexy little start to a good, happy life path, don't you think

Weekly Pond Newsletter
We missed a week because the hotel wiffy in Austin was atrocious and Admin Michelle couldn't get a darn thing to work, so now we've got two weeks of stuff to report!
Old Business:
Fishing for Treasures - May's theme is PAIRINGS (especially rare pairs)!! Last weekend the @fanficocean had their celebration, and ours will be next weekend! Click here for more info!
Monthly Prompt - The monthly prompt for May was posted, and Admin Marie did another beautiful job on the collage! Click here to see her work and get inspired!
New Member Spotlight - We welcomed three new members into the Pond in April! Click here to meet them and maybe make a new friend!
Angel Fish Awards - Another batch of fantastic fic recs for April! And @thoughtslikeaminefield won the raffle! Click here to see all the stories we loved last month!
#TweetFicTues from two weeks ago (we missed last week) -
New Business:
Giveaway in the Discord server - We're having another giveaway in the Discord server, this time for a bracelet (possibly leather, but probably not) with a Viking sun symbol on it! Drop a fic in our giveaways channel that features the sun or mothers, somehow, and earn an entry into a raffle to win. The sun and/or mother(s) have to feature in the story, though. It can't just be a randomly sunny day. Also, unless the mother in question is Mary, the mother must be mothering in the fic. Like, the fact that she's a mother is a plot point or major aspect. Mary is the only exception because she's Mary. 🤣
Competitive Writing Sprints - On Tuesday, @heavenssexiestangel will be hosting a session on competitive writing sprints. Add words to your WIP and win fabulous prizes!
Manta Ray in the Discord server - One Wednesday, Admin Michelle will be hanging out in the Discord server to talk to you! Come say hi!
(Divider by @glygriffe!)
That's all for this week! To see all Pond events, and also other SPN-related things like conventions and online concerts, check out our Google calendar! Click here for a static view in Eastern US/Canada time (desktop only, no mobile app access, sadly), and click here to add our calendar to your own Google calendar! We try to keep it as up-to-date as possible. If there's something you want to see on the calendar that's not there (maybe a convention we missed, cast birthdays, or something similar), send us an ASK and let us know!
Hope you have a great week! - From your Admins and Manta Rays, @manawhaat, @mrswhozeewhatsis, @mariekoukie6661, @thoughtslikeaminefield, and @heavenssexiestangel!
shoutout to acespec and/or arospec people who still feel some amount of sexual/romantic attraction btw. shoutout to everyone who isn't fully aro/ace and isn't fully allo. shoutout to the aspecs who feel like they don't fully fit in aro/ace communities or allo communities because of it. i love you all i am baking you cookies
I tried getting help from reddit but no luck. So now my last hope is the SPN Family.
I'm in desperate need of new prescription glasses. Have actually needed a new prescription for a year, but couldn't afford it. I checked Specsavers website and took into account previous times. Best I can figure I'll need about 3000SEK (approximately 300USD) to cover the eye exam, new frames, and new prescription lenses.
If you can help, I started a GoFundMe. Any amount helps. Even just a reblog helps.

I'm doing a panel on how to write fanfiction 😆
So my town is having a comic con and entertainment expo, like a small version of Chicago's C2E2.
I signed up to do a panel which I titled, "Beyond Canon: Mastering the Art of Fanfiction Writing."
In the panel, I want to touch on the following:
Introduction to Fanfiction: Define what fanfiction is and its significance in popular culture. Discuss its history and evolution.
Understanding Canon: Emphasize the importance of knowing the source material (canon) thoroughly before writing fanfiction. Discuss ways to research and interpret canon material.
Types of Fanfiction: Explore different genres and styles of fanfiction, such as alternate universe (AU), crossover, fluff, angst, and smut. Discuss the unique challenges and opportunities each genre presents.
Respecting Canon vs. Taking Creative Liberties: Discuss the balance between staying true to canon and taking creative liberties in fanfiction. Explore the ethics of altering or expanding upon established elements of the source material.
Feedback and Community Engagement: Discuss the role of feedback and community engagement in the fanfiction writing process. Explore platforms and communities where writers can share their work, receive feedback, and connect with fellow fans.
Legal and Ethical Considerations: Touch upon legal and ethical considerations surrounding fanfiction, such as copyright issues and respecting the rights of original creators.
The Impact of Fanfiction: Reflect on the broader cultural impact of fanfiction, including its role in fostering community, creativity, and literary analysis.
Q&A Session: Open the floor to questions from the audience, allowing attendees to seek clarification, share their own experiences, and engage in discussion.
Throughout the panel, I want to highlight some incredible fanfictions that have transcended their origins and made their mark in mainstream media as books, TV shows, or movies.
If you know of any fanfictions that have been turned into books, TV Shows, or movies please leave them below! If you have any thoughts or insights on what I should cover in specific areas, I'd appreciate your thoughts below! 😊
"that's not very aromantic of you" "that's not very asexual of you" WELL that's not very minding your own business of you
Being demiromantic is so cool, it’s like I have built in anti-douchebag security
You don’t like the friend zone? That’s the only way on up my guy
