I like the line, but it has me concerned. I hope the writers donât think this ONE line is acknowledgement enough of Fitzâs superpower-like understanding through 3a. Because Iâm sorry, but itâs not.
Throughout 3a, Fitz nearly lost his mind trying to save Jemma, then once he got her back he learned that she gave up on him and fell in love with another man, and then needed his help to rescue that other man. He didnât get angry with her, he was totally understanding, he kept his pain mostly to himself, he believed that Will was far better for her than him, he pushed their research forward even when Jemma tried to talk him out of it, he jumped through a portal and to a likely death in order to save the man she fell in love with, and then after failing to save him he chose to agree with Jemma about starting over, even though that profoundly benefits Jemma more than him considering how much she hurt him.
That one line, while nice, better not be the only acknowledgment of all of THAT. Because most people are not like that, and the response to that should not be a simple âThank youâ expressed one time just before an offer that benefits Jemma way more than Fitz.
Jemma didnât really do anything wrong in this situation, but the simple fact of the matter is that sheâs been the cause of almost all of his worst pain. In tonightâs episode, weâre going to see some of Jemmaâs guilt over that, but so far weâve been TOLD she has guilt far more than weâve seen she has guilt.
Iâve said many times that Fitzâs feelings in this ship are treated like theyâre an inconvenience to the plot, like they donât matter as much as Jemmaâs, and I still absolutely believe that.
And this isnât only because of the writers, a lot of people in this fandom treat his feelings like an afterthought as well. Itâs not exactly new information that FitzSimmons is a VERY Jemma focused fandom.
I know with absolute certainty that if the Maveth situation was switched, those same people being so dismissive of Fitzâs feelings would be in an uproar. Those same people saying that Fitz shouldnât get a new love interest would be demanding that Jemma gets a new one.
I know that a lot of people here just want them together, and I donât blame them one bit. But sooooo many of these ideas Iâve seen basically includes Fitz getting over his insecurities and pain as quickly as possible so heâs ready when Jemma finally decides to choose him. Itâs a little infuriating.
It makes it look like Fitzâs only existence is to be shipped with Jemma, but she is not held to that same standard. Hell, sometimes when I imply she should be I see some of the most bullshit comments. Luckily I havenât had to deal with the Jemma Defense Force for a while, but those first couple of months after 3x05 were almost intolerable.
Until Fitzâs feelings are treated with just as much regard as Jemmaâs, I donât want to see them together. Over these last few episodes, Jemma seems to be getting happier while Fitz is justâŠnot? Jemma seemed FAR happier when he agreed to start over than he did.
But thatâs always been the nature of their relationship since Fitz showed her how he felt and nearly died, hasnât it? Jemma being happier than FItz, and Fitzâs feelings being treated like itâs wrong to show them.
I read every bit of speculation posted in the FitzSimmons tag, and I donât like most of it. I like that itâs hopeful, but I donât like almost all of them involve Fitz getting over his issues very quickly.
Quite a bit of evidence suggests weâre going to get a role reversal soon, and I think this ship REALLY needs it. Hopefully itâs satisfying and lasts more than a couple of episodes. Most people, including myself, have predicted some good progress between 15 and 18, with 17 probably being the most important.
I wouldnât be too surprised if we have a surprise kiss coming up soon. I can only hope and pray that the writers donât treat Jemmaâs lips like they have the magical power to make all of Fitzâs insecurities and pain go away.
