A baby. Gwendolynâs mouth opened as if she was just about to say something, but then the woman kept explaining, saving everyone from the crude comment of condoms having a few more years of a shelf life left. Jesus, she had expected an eighty-year old who had made it into the outbreak, not a new life. The horrors the mother must have been through, spending nine months in this hell of an existence out there, only to bring a child into a civilization that had crumbled. Once, Gwendolyn has read that trauma could be passed on, embedding itself into oneâs genetic code. To think of the impact it had on a child, to be constantly worried and stressed. Would they ever be given a chance at life? Doomed in the blueprint, doomed in implementation.
The thought of how selfish it was to bring a life into this world was eradicated as soon as she realized it might not have been the womanâs choice at all. Even worse.
Somehow, she didnât think the story was a lie. And that felt like a twisted blade to her stomach. How could she have thought she had it so bad when someone had to deal with a baby?
And the woman had good points. Logical points. Simple things, such as being watched while sleeping, unlike the idealistic promises liars tended to mutter to lure desperate survivors in. Well, save for the mention of candy. That was one hell of a bait. She hadnât had any candy in ages, and now that she thought of it, Gwendolyn winced, not related to what this woman said, but remembering that she had candy bars a few weeks ago. Where were they..?
And the orchard.. hearing the word had the ache for home come to the surface thatâs been a part of her for the past two years. âI used to live on an orchard. Before this, I mean.â Gwendolyn brought up, unsure why. It didnât matter, and this stranger hadnât even asked, nor did it really add to the value of the discussion. She probably didnât want to know, either.
Stubborn as ever, she still kept her gun out, though Gwendolyn had the courtesy of lowering it. Having lived the way she had for so long, the flux of information from the woman was enough to give her a literal headache â or maybe it was only then that Gwendolyn noticed her head had been aching, among all the other aches she had.
âIf it has as much mold as this place, Iâm not comingâ, Gwendolyn deadpanned, unsure how to answer with anything else but a dumb joke. Frankly, a part of her thought she should respond with gratitude, but how could she before she saw the place for herself?
This woman didnât seem to be a psychopathâ no, she wasnât one of them. Didnât seem like the power-hungry type looking to steal from her, or trade her off to some messed up guy, or whatever horrors she has seen or heard of. The tension in Gwendolynâs body might tell her that, but she knew better. Still, it didnât mean her group must have good intentions. These days, people often stuck together for the sake of survival, until something forced them to part ways. Maybe Billy wasnât a bad guy, either, but what about the rest?
And yet, the grumbling in her stomach, the frailty in her limbs made it hard not to throw aside these arguments.
âBut in that case the mold removal spray in shelf is yours. Iâm coming.â She blurted out.
God, what was the point? What was the point of questioning them endlessly, trying to analyze every bit of their body language and microexpressions, every tiny move? When time was so scarce? What was the point?
Parting ways instead of coming with them, thinking she should watch from afar and then decide, at the cost of not being able to sleep fearing she would be stalked by the pair of strangers? At the cost of never finding them again?
She had to play with the cards she had been dealt. And long-term plans were a little beyond her capabilities, screwing her over more often than they protected her.
It was a gamble, really. But one easily tamed by all the sensations plaguing her.
âJust lead the way.â
"You did?" Fox's interest was genuine. So far, they'd been relying on books taken from the local library ( she still didn't know how to feel about that ), but having someone who might know how to tend to trees without pages upon pages of reading would be a valuable asset. "Do you know how to care for fruit trees?" Of course, if she didn't, that wouldn't change things. They would still gladly welcome her into their little sanctuary.
Although the joke was deadpanned, Fox laughed. "Not that I'm aware of, but I suppose it is good to always check. The previous owners were pretty clean people, by the looks of it. Even when we first moved in, there wasn't much dust, and they had at least ten years worth of pledge in a hall closet, so I'd doubt there's mold--but we might as well take the removal spray just in case." She grinned, happy that the girl had made what she thought was the right decision.
Fox would certainly sleep easier at night knowing they hadn't left her to fend for herself, alone. She wouldn't keep looking at every red-headed dead one wondering if it was going to be Gwendolyn. She was never good at leaving anyone behind, even those who deserved it, but especially those that didn't.
"I'm very glad to hear it." She stepped back, out of the doorway. "Is there anything I can help you carry to the car before we get everything else here?" The back of the SUV was already partially packed with items from their first stop. Mainly dried goods that would need to be picked clean of weevils, and a few other things from a partially burned out feed store. There was a bag of baby clothes too, ranging in sizes. Rain boots. And boxes of seeds and empty jars.
"We have another stop to make before we head back, figured we could have some lunch before we head out." Billy was hard at work starting a little fire in the parking lot, after all. Having baited a few squirrels with cracked corn early in the day, they'd have a nice little meal to keep their energy up.
It was much better than the earlier days when they were forced to rely on dog food cans to make sure the more needy of the group were given the healthier options. They still operated much the same, but they had different choices now. Were able to sustain themselves with stores and the plethora of homemade canned goods in the cellar of the mansion. A veritable gold mine of filled glass jars, onions, and potatoes.
"Sound good to you?"
The faintest wave of cheer washed through Gwendolyn seeing the womanâs genuine interest. Dimmed, of course, by the pain of survival, but a glimmer of something like that was significant nevertheless, in particular in times like these and when one was having sentimental thoughts. It was as if for a moment, they had a normal conversation, when the reality hit her that, as much as she was trying to play this cool, this woman could still be up to something. Not to harm her. But maybe thereâd be some kind of twist to this.
And, of course, this wasnât about genuine interest in her, was it? Just another way to see how useful she could be.
âNope.â She was quick to admit, feeling the frustration seep through her. Hopefully, it wouldnât show, though her face could generally be read like an open book. If Gwendolyn hated anything, perhaps more than finding candy only to lose it, it was feeling useless, when people these days measured you by what you could provide. âI donât. Though I can help you with other stuff.â She assured, sounding more forced and potentially even overconfident than the natural confidence she had intended to say this with.
Maybe if that worry hadnât hit her so hard, she would have mirrored that laugh. But she couldnât. She had no clue what ten years of pledge in a hall closet meant, but she quickly realized the woman probably wasnât referring to food, like she had hoped for an instant. In any case, it sounded like good news.
âNope.â Gwendolyn responded in regard to Foxâs question as she followed the other woman with quiet steps. There was, in fact, nothing she should help her carry to the car. It wasnât that Gwendolyn had no possessions that needed carrying. She did. She just didnât trust the others with the valuable things sheâs found, but left in a hidden spot as it was too heavy to carry.
She wasnât taking the chance that they would just get her to share all her shit and take it. They might not be psychokillers, but even nice people did some mean things to survive, and realizing she had to get in a car with them felt like a kick to the stomach. If anything happened, sheâd be left exposed in a tight spot. The sight of the baby clothes provided some reassurance, but at the same time, it raised more concerns. People could get desperate for a good cause, such as, helping a mother with a baby.
At the question, Gwendolyn shrugged. âLunchâs always good. Iâm used to eating whatever I can find - as long as itâs okay to eat without getting food poisoning.â Of course, the part about making another stop didnât sound good to Gwendolyn, since she had no idea what she was in for. She felt like it was smarter to play dumb rather than show too much suspicion, though, so she delayed the question about where the next stop would be. If they thought she was some naive girl, theyâd drop their guard around her, making it easier to read their intentions.
âHave you two known each other for long?â
If she needed to figure out who these people were, whether she could trust them, she needed to figure out how they ticked.

2. Where does your character fall in the birth order? 3. What is the age gap between each sibling? 8. What is your characterâs earliest memory involving a sibling? 11. Were they compared to a sibling often as a child? 13. Who got into trouble first, and who got blamed? 16. Do they trust their siblings with secrets? 22. Who is more responsible? More reckless? 27. What âroleâ does each sibling play? (protector, peacemaker, rebel, golden child, outsiderâŠ.) 28. Was this role chosen or forced onto them? 30. Who gets away with the most? 33. Who usually âwinsâ arguments? 36. Would your character lie to protect a sibling? 37. Have the siblings ever failed to protect one another?
2. Where does your character fall in the birth order?
The order is 1) Lasse, her oldest brother 2) Florian, the middle brother and 3) Gwendolyn.
3. What is the age gap between each sibling?
Gwendolyn was born in October 1993. Florian was born 1989 and Lasse 1984. So, Florian is four years older than Gwen, whereas Lasse is nine years older than her.
In the mid seasons I usually play her in, 2013 (around the time where they've built something in Alexandria and Rick is still there), Gwen would turn 20, Florian would be 24, and Lasse would be 29.
8. What is your characterâs earliest memory involving a sibling?
Her earliest memory involving a sibling was her older brother Lasse handing her a remote control to fly a model plane. Of course he helped her because Gwen was only three and couldn't fly it on her own.
11. Were they compared to a sibling often as a child?
Yes. A lot. Usually her mother would favor her, but most of the praise she got was not direct face to face praise but rather being used as an example to critisize the other sibling.
13. Who got into trouble first, and who got blamed?
Both Gwen and Lasse got into trouble a lot. And Florian too, though he often didn't intend to unlike the other two. Honestly all of these kids were a bit of a troublemaker. Lasse was nice enough to often take the blame for the others.
16. Do they trust their siblings with secrets?
None of them would, really. Lasse was pretty distant to Gwen and rather reclusive for most of his life. Florian blurts out stuff without meaning to, and unfortunately Gwen has also blurted out some stuff, so Florian and Gwen would never trust each other with secrets. But, Gwen and Lasse got closer when Gwen was around fifteen after her best friend lassed. Since then, Gwen would trust Lasse when it comes down to it, but he remains a mistrusting loner.
22. Who is more responsible? More reckless?
Gwen and Lasse both grew more responsible as they aged. The military put a lot of discipline into Lasse. Still they both can be reckless. It's a tie between them being the most reckless ones. Florian isn't reckless, but I wouldn't call him responsible. He tries, but he's clumsy.
27. What âroleâ does each sibling play? (protector, peacemaker, rebel, golden child, outsiderâŠ.)
Lasse is the protector, rebel and kind of the outsider. He's always been distant and withdrawn, but if someone got into serious trouble he helped quietly in the background without taking any credit. Florian is the awkward middle kid. He was pretty sensitive and got into arguments with Gwen over every little thing, which sometimes had Lasse come out from his hideout in his room just to tell them to shut the fuck up. He was also protected from blame no matter what he did. Gwen was a bit of the golden child, because her mom would favor her and grant her privileged first and pay a bit more attention to her, but she also critisized her the most, just not in front of others.
28. Was this role chosen or forced onto them?
Both I guess. Lasse grew up under harder circumstances than the others. Gwen barely got to know her shitty bio dad, whereas Lasse did since he's nine years older. That definitely shaped him. As for Florian, he was coddled, mainly because he had a disability and Gwen's mother just didn't know how to deal with it.
30. Who gets away with the most?
Florian.
33. Who usually âwinsâ arguments?
They were all stubborn. But if Lasse got into an argument, he won it.
36. Would your character lie to protect a sibling?
All of them would.
37. Have the siblings ever failed to protect one another?
No.
