Chapter 13 Fieldwork: Migration
Hello , today I am telling the immigration story of a young 28 year old Hispanic woman. Born in Mexico in a very poor community, with the thought of never knowing if they were going to survive the next day. Her house was made with sticks and the restrooms were portable, and had to take showers with a bucket. She came to the United States illegally. Her family who lived in the states raised money to pay someone to smuggle her into the country. In the process of being smuggled she said it was the scariest moment of her life. Not knowing at any moment they could be exposed or found, and her life would be worse than it already was. She was in the car for over 4 days with others, and stated the driver barely stopped. Some didn’t make it the entire trip , some died from famish , and others were very sick. She said they barely stopped to allow them to use the bathroom; so it was a horrible smell of feces and they had no choice but to use the bathroom on themselves.
When she was 19 years old living here in the states, she had friends and met a guy who she considered to be her best friend. On his birthday she wanted to throw him a party. Attending was him, her and another friend . However, the other friend had to abruptly leave. Continuing the party, she and her “best-friend” began to drink. As they sat and talked , he brought her a drink while she was sitting in her computer chair. While sitting in the chair and drinking, her head began to spin and next thing she knew everything was distorted and she was nauseous. After spinning everything went blank and she was left with only two memories. One was that she was wearing less clothing and as she repeatedly tried to get up, all she could feel was herself falling, describing it as uncontrollably scary . As she laid there, he proceeded to remove her clothing then everything went blank again. Her second memory was of her being raped. She states that she still feels damaged from this situation, so she prefers not to talk about it. So, no further details were given.
The next morning when she came to, she was fully dressed and he was just sitting there staring at her. She pretended that she couldn’t remember anything, so that she would be able to try to escape. By acting clueless he allowed her to go to her car, where she escaped and contacted the authorities. The police instructed her to go to the hospital. Once she was there, they told her she had a high level of a “date rape” drug in her system. This led to a case being conducted and during a court hearing, he said “she's an illegal immigrant she doesn’t belong here”, and spoke to her as if she was nothing. She states this is why she was afraid to talk about it, because her fear of having to leave again was always a risk and the consequences of being caught as an illegal immigrant.
She was told in court that there was a visa that had the capability to protect her. It was called U-Visa and the idea behind it is for when the person who was waiting for their visa card, the abuser will not be allowed to randomly post falsified charges against her to make her get deported. Over time she had developed temporary vision loss and suffered from many mental illnesses due to her trauma. She eventually received her visa, but it only lasted for 4 years. It is a requirement that you have to renew every 4 years, and if you do anything it could jeopardize your visa status. These penalties like getting in trouble or anything will have you deported. Soon after this court case she had to return home to Mexico to assist in the aid of her grandmother. When her grandmother passed away she returned to the states. She wanted to return to what her version of a better life was and has made one for herself despite all that she has been through.
