[Part 1] Hey, it's me again. I don't think that Dean puts anyone before Sam, that is true. But that's not really the only problem I have, I've done that before, taking the shipper googles off, and whenever I do the show just makes no sense to me... You see I am a writer, I study writing theories like crazy and when I write a story no detail is entirely meaningless and that's where most of my problems with this show come from...
[Part 2] If the writers wanted to invoque the brotherly love on us with full force they could have made that couple be a platonic love as well, that would make more sense. And if that was the case I would know without a shadow of a doubt that that moment was about Sam. But they didn’t, they made them a couple, husband and wife. So I know that what M is talking about is romantic love and so that leaves me with doubts. So it just makes me angry at them, the writers, for pulling this ambiguos moves[Part 3] It makes me feel like they are either being ambiguos on purpose or that they suck as writers… and it was a really good episode! But if I force myself to see the fact that they did it for no particular reason than to be ambiguous it feels like a dick move and it kind of makes me sad… I know leaving room for speculation is important but, come on… sometimes it makes me want to leave the show.[Part 4] Also, thanks for politely listening to me. With how the fandom is sometimes, I feel a little scared to just come out and say that I kind of ship both Destiel and Wincest and all that stuff…
I really only have these few things to say, and beyond that I do believe our conversation is over, sweetheart. When Dean returned to humanity after being a demon, he asked Castiel if Sam wanted a DIVORCE. In canon, Dean asked Cas if Sam wanted a divorce.
Platonic as it might be in canon, to Dean he and Sam are essentially married. They’re as married as two people in their kind of lives could be. They are the definition of ‘old married couple’, and have been referred to as such throughout the entire show. Dean even wants them to retire in a retirement home together and has said so. There’s no one else Dean wants to ride down the highway with and have sitting shotgun. Sam also compares his and Dean’s relationships to other couples all the time, and has most of his thoughtful ‘reflective’ moments about him and Dean while internally comparing his relationship with his brother to other couples they meet along the way, and Dean does the same thing over the course of the show. It’s platonic in canon, but they compare themselves to couples they meet ALL the time. Also in canon when other people see them? Like in the episode ‘Bitten’ in S8 (and many other episodes), people ask things like ‘do you get a workplace romance vibe from those two’?
So if your only basis for not believing that the ‘man Dean loves’ is Sam, is because the couple in comparison in the episode was married, there’s literally no ground to stand on.
In the words of my best friend, “You don’t need to pit Sam and Dean against a platonic pair to invoke brotherly love. Sam and Dean do that all on their own.”
Dean in Canon considers himself and Sam married, has said so himself, and worried out loud whether or not Sam wanted a divorce just one season ago. If the writers choices are what you’re trying to analyze here, analyze all the ‘Winchesters being a couple references’ over the course of the entire show from s1 to now. This episode, 11x17 Red Meat, is no different. The writers are incredibly consistent about that. Sam and Dean have been canon ‘soulmates’, platonic or otherwise, since S5 and they were told this to their faces and know it to be true. Have a good night!
