SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN dir. Gene Kelly + Stanley Donen
How an art school in coastal Georgia is killing its students — and why no one is talking about it.
I went to SCAD. This wasn’t everyone’s experience, but it was similar to mine and a fair few friend’s of mine.
I saw this article on twitter, and the thread is really revealing.
I’ve had people ask me if the experience is just a “SCAD” experience. It’s not. It’s Ringling, RISD, LCAD, MICA, CCAD, DigiPen, and on and on–it’s all the private art colleges.
Just do the full soul search before making the decision to go to these schools. That’s all I ask.
I have debt I’ll never be able to pay off, and I can’t bankrupt out of it because the loans are private, as the school intended. That’s the world of art colleges.
Unless your family is affluent enough to pay out of pocket without feeling any hurt, I can’t in good conscience recommend art college to anyone.
All the knowledge you need can be found online today, and nearly all of it is free to access via youtube and blogs. You can even ask artists/professionals about their process and their jobs, ask to interview them if you feel nervous to just ask off-hand.
I will likely NEVER see a day that I am without debt. No one told me that coming in. So I’m telling you. I left with such extreme burn out that I barely made any artwork for a full year because I would devolve into shakes and panic. It’s taken nearly 4 years to overcome my PTSD with drawing. That’s why I paint so much, go figure.
PLEASE, please, if you decide to go, go in with a full-understanding.
People die because of the culture. There were a few when I attended. No one talks about it. And it’s getting worse.
although she was the woman and he a fierce and sometimes arrogant man, hers was the stronger nature because the more pliant.
Debbie Reynolds tells the story about how Fred Astaire encouraged her to keep working hard on the dance routines for Singin’ in the Rain. (x)
Okay, we need to talk about this because I haven’t heard near enough about what a freakin’ boss Debbie Reynolds was on Singin in the Rain. Because that was the first dance role she’d had EVER. She had gymnastics training so she knew how to move her body, but she hadn’t danced before, and here she was thrown right into the deep end with Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor. Kelly in particular was a huge asshole to her and gave her a lot of crap because she wasn’t performing to his standards, even though she was putting on tap shoes for the first time and he was Gene Fucking Kelly. Hence the nervous breakdown under the piano and encouragement from Fred Astaire. (Kelly, to his credit, owned up to the assholeness after the fact and said he was surprised Reynolds was willing to put up with him afterwards.)
And she DID IT. She didn’t give up busted her ass and danced until her feet bled (literally, she had to not be carried off the set after filming “Good Morning”) and she held her own alongside two of the best dancers in Hollywood then or ever and she smiled through what by all accounts was one of the most physically demanding movie musicals ever. She worked through her self-doubts and met the challenge and made history.
Debbie Reynolds. Carrie Fisher. The badass is strong in their family. Never forget it.
Team Logan or team jess
“The director of the first film, Andrew Adamson, was very focused on preserving real emotion, on seeing things for the first time, and having, like, a real sense of wonder.“
“So he didn’t actually show me the set of Narnia where the lamppost is until we shot it. I was blindfolded and guided into my place, and he told me to just walk around, that the camera would follow me.”
“And so I turned around and I saw it for the first time. It was in a studio but it was ri-dic-ul-ous-ly real. I couldn’t get my head around it. And so what you see is my real reaction to everything. It was incredible.”

On top of that, she had been close friends with the fella playing Tumnus and had not yet seen him in full costume. They were kept apart a few days before their meeting was shot so when she meets him and lights up? She’s seeing her friend for the first time in days and he’s also in costume.
See, this is where enforced method acting is okay and sweet and adorable.
