One of many, returned alone

Nellie found herself wandering around the fair alone. This had never really been her scene, but she had nothing better planned for her night so she figured she’d at least come to check it out. Stopping at a food stand to pick up a classic fair food, an elephant ear, she began munching on it as she continued to walk. Pulling a piece of her snack off, she stopped a few feet away from someone playing a game. “You’re supposed to get the bag in the hole.” She teased, using her piece of food between her fingers to point at the target before popping into her mouth.

While it pained her to see what the human was eating, she smiled at the gentle teasing all the same.  After all, the fair was providing the food and who could blame her for taking part in it.  “Oh is that the goal?” she asked curiously.  “I thought it was to throw this bean thing and miss it entirely, because I’m pretty good at that.”  Sycamonia drew back and tossed the next one, which was at least closer.  “Here, you can show me how it’s done,” she offered.

Rebekah was trying to keep a low profile in her current state so Marcel was on his own for a majority of the festivities. He would be with her at midnight when it counted but for now, he rolled stag which had him teamed with the brunette to play cornhole. She missed her first bag completely. He laughed but shook his head. He walked over to her from where he stood on the other side. “Hey, don’t sweat it. The game’s just started and you have another bag to toss. I’m Marcel, by the way. Here-,” He placed her to the side of their board and stretched her arm out straight to her side. “Okay now you just kind of lob it over there- like a grenade.” Not that she would have any experience with grenades, but it was the only thing he could think of. “Now, just kind of feel it in your whole body.” He demonstrated the motion then pointed to his partner. “Okay, now you.”

The display of kindness was unexpected, but altogether welcome.  “Sycamonia - it’s nice to meet you, Marcel.”  And it was, really.  As he moved her she simply went along with the motions, letting herself be positioned and made ready for another throw.  “Like a grenade,” she repeated with a smile, not having the faintest idea what one might be but understanding the idea if nothing else.  “Feel it in my whole body.”  With her arm out at her side, she tossed the bag towards the board and watched with a hopeful expression as it landed and slid towards the hole...only to stop just short.  “That was so much better,” she laughed, turning to Marcel with an incline of her head.  “Thank you for that.”

T H E I R  R O O T S had tangled once, sharing the same soil, so deep in the earth that not even a storm could lift them. as they connect, the lone flower sways and grows, curling towards them like a light source, responding to wisteria’s joy as she holds her sister close. “ where you go i follow. “ she whispers quietly. “ my sweetest sister, the rest will come. our family will return, our sisters would not leave us behind so willingly. “ her grip tightens for a second, the momentary doubt. ( she’s careful with her words, doesnt admit that she fears there will be a day where there is no sign of them ) “ how long has it been since we … “ died. “ how long have you been alone ?? “

The relief and love pours from her in waves, and in answer to their mingled emotion the flower beneath them is joined by another, twisting and binding together in representation of all that they are to each other.  “I hope so,” she whispers, “because I don’t know how I got out, nor how to look for them.”  The tightened grip pulls her in closer and she goes willingly, burying her face against her beloved sister’s chest.  “More seasons than I had imagined - hundreds of years, at least.  Long enough to be forgotten and consigned to stories.”  Sycamonia searches her mind.  “Four or five moons,” the words are whispered.  “I found myself in our grove, turned to concrete by the humans.  I went in search of more of us, and found only silence - until now, Wisteria.  But any wait was worth it to see you again.”

I N  T H E darkness of the malivore, her grove had been lost and yet here she was. the vision of sycamonia is like blooming trees and the fireflies that’d play beneath them. beautiful and enchanting. ( the earth in her bones pulses and sings, the wind around her whispering ‘ you’re coming home ‘ ) wisteria stares, eyes stinging as she tries to find her voice. there’s so much she could say- should say but the words are lost on her. “ a little more to the left. “ she says, hiding the earthquake in her voice as it tremors. “ then you should hit your mark. “ she speaks as if they are the playing the game together the way they would in their grove with the rest of their family, as if they’re still peaceful and unburdened. ( she does not know if they will ever again be peaceful and unburdened ) “ hello again . “

There’s a moment before Wisteria speaks, the length of a heartbeat, when her presence is felt more than known.  Like a part of herself has been reconnected, a root grown into the Earth to entangle with another.  “You always were better at that sort of thing,” Sycamonia breathes, turning to look more completely into her sister’s eyes.  “I can’t believe you’re here.  I thought I was the only one freed from that endless dark, that I was the only one of our grove - the only one of our kind - who had found their way home.”  Given the state of the world, it had seemed likely.  Stepping carefully forward, avoiding a stubborn flower that grew through the cracks of the pavement, she pulled her sister close and whispered her name to the wind.  “Hello, sister.”

If there was anything quite as horrifying as watching what humans did to food at a fair, Sycamonia wasn’t sure that she knew what it could be.  Nature went out of her way to provide the flesh of animals and the matter of plants, all arranged in an artful and elegant balance to sustain life upon her.  And instead she was standing outside a booth offering the nutritious parts of an animal fried in fat until it was all but unrecognizable.  It was enough to bring a tear to her eye.

In an attempt at distraction she found one of the games, throwing a piece of burlap filled with what she thought might be beans at a hole some distance away.  Despite how tempted she was to cheat and use the wind for her aid, she played the game fairly and frowned when she missed.  It had been nice, though, to distract herself from her missing grove for at least a moment.

lucy hale? no, that’s just sycamonia you know, the 1067 year old dryad. who’s been known to be gentle but flighty. they’ve also been called the quiescent for those exact reasons. i heard that they were one of the fallen who was brought back; but who knows how long that will last once everyone finds out that she is searching for the others from her grove.

for untold ages, the dryads lived in harmony with nature - creating new life, helping plants and trees flourish, keeping all things in balance.  sycamonia was born to a grove of four, becoming the fifth and completing their circle.

when malivore was created and began to swallow all manner of creatures, the dryads quickly realized that their peaceful natures left them all but helpless.  but that knowledge didn’t prevent them from playing their part until the end, accepting the inevitable with grace.

when sycamonia woke following hope’s wish it was in an empty parking lot, the former location of her grove now paved over and left as a monument to humanity’s destruction of the natural world.

following currents of magic led her across the country to mystic falls, doing her best to blend in and help nature heal at each stop along the way.
