Love & Deepspace is a Chinese romance ARPG, considered the biggest in the genre and one of the highest grossing gacha games since its release. It has such insane battle mechanics, complex lore and storylines, and amazing features. Like we literally have a period tracker (with care messages,) and even a quality time system where we can exercise, work, study and sleep with our beau of choice. Also a literal home system, that's basically the Sims (you decorate your house yourself, you garden, and the guys do whatever they want all the while) 🚬
So far we have had five love interests; Xavier, Rafayel, Zayne, Sylus and Caleb. The first three were all released with the launch of the game, but the other two took some time.
You have a customizable persona/main character, and it's generally a self insert game, except for a minority who chooses otherwise. You collect "memories" which are story cards you can play, they either come in solo banners or multibanners.
They also have meta companions of the LIs you can collect through what we call a "Myth," they're basically their past or future lives with the player.
So, in-game we had all these signs about a sixth love interest eventually coming, so we were looking forward to it, and it took a while, until he was announced last month.
Since we didn't have battle updates to get currency from for months, or really interesting content, most people were getting burnout. But with that teaser alone, the fandom was more alive than it's ever been 😭 they dangled a nerdy clingy werewolf with biceps bigger than life itself in our faces for like a week and then basically hell broke loose. A loud portion on the CN side thought he was "ugly" and "too masculine that he looks gay" "made for the African market" ??? Like I need a gun right in this instant.
They ran a campaign of false information that was extremely serious, it was genuinely baffling to see how they belittled national tragedies just to find a reason and erase a character they found unattractive. Eventually, and after only eight days, they got that sixth love interest, Valko, removed from the game.
It turned into this big thing in the gaming community, where everyone is demanding he comes back, even people outside the sphere. A whole boycott started that is destroying the game's company.
Things got so bad that even the government is involved now, and we don't know what's true or not anymore because of the influx of news since then.
It's beyond me how these people are supporting censorship as if it's not a tool of fascism. Besides, if a character is deleted from such a powerful game because they don't align with these stupid personal standards, then what does it mean for the future of romance, or gacha games as a whole? It's a total, wretched mess.
Despite all the bullying and negativity, the global fandom is doing really well in this character's name; adopting endangered wolves, sponsoring shelters and donating to charities. So the outcome has been positive. It's very lovely to witness!
This game is so important to me, truly. It had so many issues, but I loved it nonetheless, and I had faith in them being fixed. Now, my passion has faded. And I'm currently partaking in the boycott.
It's such a pity how they shot themselves in the foot when it was just so easy to ignore. Now they lost too much money to make up for easily 🤷♀️ It's terrifying that one portion of the playerbase is prioritized over others, and it can change the trajectory of everything at once.
The only way to rectify the situation is to bring Valko back. And I know it sounds like such a low possibility, but I still have hope.
