Don't leave your friends and even acquaintances to go to the hospital alone. If they don't have someone already going with them and don't explicitly tell you they don't want you there, go to advocate for them. Outcomes for sick people change dramatically when they have someone else there to observe doctors (making them know they can't get away with negligence) and note symptoms from an outside perspective.

Going to the hospital is scary and even someone totally unprepared to be a medical advocate or physical support will be better than nothing, purely from their presence. You can grab food, be there with your phone to search if theirs dies, go in search of a doctor, distract them from pain or discomfort... go with them.

so much of the horror genre is informed by the metaphor of queer/transness as monstrousness. especially emphasizing the amount of horror that depends on the audience's repulsion at seeing a human body changing into a new, other body. I Saw the TV Glow is about the horror of NOT transitioning. the horror of static. the horror of looking into yourself and being terrified of what you see. the horror of seeing who you are and choosing to do nothing about it. the horror of looking away. and by god is it terrifying.

i think that's what i saw the tv glow did honestly.

that moment when you're watching it as a trans person, and every cell in your body is begging her to not stop, to not run away, please please please. you need to see it more than you've needed anything. and then she does. she sees everything inside herself in a bathroom all alone where we've all been, and she closes it all up, her emaciated and sickly body barely holding her up, and she walks back into an arcade room apologizing for her outburst to a building full of people who refuse to see or hear her.

and then you realize, while your chest feels like it might just cave in under the pressure, that this film refused to afford you the relief of seeing someone else do what you must, to give you that false and fleeting pressure eased. no. if you want this film to have a good ending, you have to make it yourself. you have to do what she could not, because otherwise, well. you just saw your future.

started an interview with jane schoenbrun and them talking about horror movies and the horror section at the video store being an early iteration of the combination of fear and desire when you're a kid, because it's very enticing but you know you probably shouldn't... another little layer to camp miasma that I hadn't thought about in exactly those terms!

I have so many thoughts on Camp Miasma but my main one rn is that it so beautifully unpacks the ways we feel shame about sexual fantasy. The frame of desire as PLAY that you can STOP at any time. Fkn brilliant.

(Also I saw/interacted with two queer icons tonight: Hannah Einbinder— I called out and said she was fkn brilliant as she passed me in the movie theatre— and Tracy E. Gilchrist— the journalist who went viral for the insane wicked interview she did. I told her her interviews were awesome. Fkn superb evening)
