And for the final prompt of Taang Fluff Week- Modern AU, I used this lovely fanart as inspiration. ☺️ I hope you don’t mind @dragonbonez!
Summary: Toph can't see him, but she hears his laugh everyday. And it's beautiful. This is basically a very short glimpse into the beginning of a love story where Toph falls in love at first sound. 😌
@taang-fluff-week
Toph trailed her fingers over the Braille, searching for the answer to her homework question.
It was loud in the tea shop today, a bit unusual for a Tuesday mid-morning. She blamed it on the large group of students a few tables away from her. If they were studying they were doing a terrible job of it.
"Miss Toph, would you like another cup?" The kind shop owner asked. They'd become good friends after she frequented a little too often, coming here in between classes to study.
Her nose wrinkled in disdain. "Actually, I'd like some quiet."
Iroh laughed as he refilled her cup. "My apologies, that's my nephew's rowdy group of friends. They really are lovely people... just not good at using inside voices."
"If you say so, Iroh." She shrugged as he walked away and reached into her bag for her headphones. She didn't like listening to music when studying, but it was better than the loud yapping from those idiots.
Right before she placed the headphones on, a sound made her pause.
A tinkling laugh, clear and pure and so full of happiness.
It came from that same table.
Toph shook her head, fighting a sudden blush. How silly to blush over a random stranger's laugh. Ridiculous.
No it did not make her heart beat faster.
She shoved the headphones on and went back to studying. No more distractions.
~~~
She heard that laugh almost every time she entered the tea shop. Toph found herself craving to hear it, wanting to know the owner of said laugh.
Ridiculous.
Was she really developing a crush on someone based on their laugh? Utterly ridiculous.
~~~
Toph caught herself 'staring' into space, angled towards his table.
God, why was his laugh so sweet?
She shook her head, forcing herself to focus on her books. Daydreams were for saps.
~~~
Iroh filled her cup, his ever-knowing, insufferable, wisdom-having-self interjecting into her business when he spoke, "Would you like me to introduce you to Zuko's friends?"
Toph denied the flush on her cheeks. "No thank you, Iroh."
"Perhaps... just the one boy?" He grinned cheekily at her as her face went even redder.
"Absolutely not." Toph slammed her book shut and quickly left the shop (of course taking her tea with her). Iroh's full-bellied laugh followed her out the door.
She thought she could feel eyes on her, but she couldn't be sure, of course.
~~~
"Hi. I'm Aang."
Toph blinked. Was that...?
"Do you mind if I sit with you?" He asked, already pulling out the chair opposite her.
"Uh... go ahead." She mumbled softly. It was him, she was pretty sure. The boy with the beautiful laugh.
Aang seemed to be looking at her books. "What are you reading?"
She raised an eyebrow at him and snarked, "Braille, obviously."
He laughed. God it was him.
"Obviously," He agreed, "but what is it? You're studying something for school?"
Toph nodded, "Yeah... I'm majoring in business."
"Cool! I'm majoring in veterinarian science." He shared excitedly, "I'm only in my second year. Almost halfway done!"
She smiled at him, "Yeah me too."
"You should come sit with my friends, we're always here studying. I notice you sit alone over here, so I thought maybe you'd want to join us?"
Toph swallowed. Not that she was afraid of that group— she didn't give a damn what they thought of her— but to be in such close, constant proximity to this sunshine boy with the pretty laugh?
"Sure." Toph found herself answering.
"Great!" Aang clapped his hands. "We’re all leaving now but I'll see you tomorrow then— oh. I didn't catch your name?"
Right, he had introduced himself and she had completely forgotten to. She grinned at his voice, "I'm Toph."
"Toph..." Her name sounded different coming from his mouth. A good different. "I'll see you around, Toph."
She raised a hand to wave at him as she heard him retreating. "Yeah... see ya never, Aang."
His beautiful laugh echoed through the shop, sounding almost exactly like the bells on the door as it closed behind him.
And already, she couldn’t wait to talk to him again— to make him laugh again.
She heard a creak in the floorboard nearby and pointed her finger eerily close to Iroh’s face before she snarled, “Not one word, old man.”
“I know you are, but everything is going to be fine, Toph.”
“How do you know that? It’s not like we’ve ever done this before! So many things can go wrong—”
“They can, but that doesn’t mean they will,” Aang told her firmly. “And we can’t worry about that kind of stuff, okay?”
Toph bit her lip, her brow furrowed. She could hear the flutter of his heartbeat, but he wasn’t lying. He wasn’t even scared. Nervous, yeah, but he was excited. He was happy.
Hi Joy! Thanks for the ask. You know Taang makes me soft. Idk I’m thinking this might also be good for Taang Fluff Week? Specifically Day 4: Comfort @taang-fluff-week
Aang slipped a hand around her waist and pulled her to him before he pressed a kiss to her temple. She smelled of earth and sweat and iron, but she smelled like Toph, and he loved it.
“I thought we could spend some time together, just the two of us,” Aang murmured into her hair.
