I know the answer, but why are Hallmark holiday movies…like that?

The plot is always meant to be escapism, but the female protags never *want* to escape- they’re Type A ladies who worked hard to get where they are and have had the dream of success in business since the beginning. You sort of get the sense that they’re extroverted and like urban living. They have friend groups, apartments, and all that. Yes, the movie does tell you that they’re stressed, but they really seem to like their lives outside of that.

When they do inevitably get sent to Xmas-ville for their assignment, the guy they meet is almost never nice at first. He makes fun of her for not knowing how farm equipment works. He calls her ‘city girl’ and implies her journalism degree is stupid. He takes joy in making her do unpleasant tasks to ‘humble’ her.

Even when they warm up to each other, he still doesn’t like her very much- the worst example I’ve seen was the lady being an artist, *finally* getting her first gallery showing, and wanting to catch a flight to go see it…and the guy didn’t want her to go, because who’d look after his toddler who loved her so much? She wasn’t even *moving*, just taking a short trip to Seattle or wherever.

I know people say these films are Chick Flicks, but they really don’t seem to cater to a female perspective at all. Most of us don’t work High Profile jobs, and we certainly wouldn’t want a guy who made fun of us for it if we did.

All I’m saying is- Cinderella wouldn’t be Cinderella if she enjoyed working from home, and Prince Charming made it a point to jokingly call her an Old Maid.

It’s not meant as wish-fulfillment, it’s reassuring you about choices already made.

Your audience for this kind of movie isn’t the city-dweller, but the stay-at-home mom who doesn’t have a career or outlet. The movies point out how the city doesn’t make our protagonist better, at least not in the ways that count for small town life. You’re meant to see how unprepared she is for situations that are routine you. All the city has done is make her out-of-touch and caught up in a grind that isn’t making her happy (apparently). What she needs is the family connection of [Relevant Holiday Here] as represented by [Decorative Activity Here].

The target audience can’t leave town; they already have a family and a life too rooted to leave. Halmark films are a steady and simple message: “You’re not missing out. Everyone else wants what you already have here. Look how this outsider needs what you have, how she only came to her senses when she saw your lifestyle.”

In the end, it’s escapism by pretending that the cell bars keep the world out, not you in.

I hate Freud. His whole weird theory about penis envy and children being sexually attracted to their parents and secret desires and all that shit actually came straight out of an attempt to ally himself with wealthy and influential rapists and was a direct form of victim blaming.

He had started the research looking into “hysteria” which at the time was really usually referring to women’s symptoms of PTSD. It turned out that the reason so many woman had these symptoms is because so many of them had experienced sexual violence– especially CSA and incest at the hands of their fathers. 

At first he was making real progress, and it was through working with these women that he discovered that talk therapy could be used to treat trauma. The symptoms of PTSD were lessened when women were able to safely speak about their experiences out loud and be believed. 

But it wasn’t the women who paid for the therapy. It was their fathers, husbands, the same men who were perpetuating the violence in the first place. And Freud didn’t want to validate his patients (the women) if it meant making his clients (the men) unhappy.

So he came up with a new idea. These symptoms weren’t from trauma. The memories weren’t real. These women were just sexual beings as children and had penis envy and it made them lust for their fathers and fantasize about the rape that they had reported to him. That’s where the shittiest parts of Freud’s theories emerged. Another part of it besides just the monetary aspect, though, was that there was a feminist movement on the fringes starting up at the time and by publishing work about women’s CSA he would be aligning himself with it and therefore losing support, respect, funding, prestige from his male peers and from the psychological community at large. He literally made that gross victim blaming shit up to keep his own reputation with these fucks and to make sure he still got publication and fame.

By coming up with fake theory about little girls fantasizing about incest he not only fucked over generations of women, the feminist movement that was arising, and the entire psychology field for years to come, but he also completely swept away any progress made in understanding trauma and so we didn’t have any clue why men coming back from war had “hysteria” like women during WWI.

And our research on PTSD and trauma is still lacking to this day, especially because of the stigma that maybe traumatized people deserved it or wanted it or imagined it. People don’t want to believe it’s real. Perpetrators of traumatic violence want everyone to forget about it, not acknowledge it, or trivialize it.

And they have Freud’s cultural legacy to help them.

Words cannot express how much I hate Freud. His theories have been entirely disproven by current psychological research, but using him to interpret literary texts is still a widely accepted technique in the field of literary study today.

English departments across the country will not bat an eye at tenured professors bringing Freud into lectures and citing him in scholarly articles and books. Doing a “Freudian reading” of a literary character or theme is regarded as a valid means of understanding and drawing meaning from works by authors as diverse as William Shakespeare, James Joyce, and C.S. Lewis. And it is based entirely on this guy’s unbelievably sexist, flat-out fraudulent, and thoroughly disproven research. It’s insane.

As a female Psychology professor of the past 15 years, I hate Freud with my entire being. But - I promise you, none of us hate him nearly as much as Karen Horney did.

She was a student of Psychoanalysis, but she challenged his theories as condescending and incorrect on the regular. She desexualized Freud’s Oedipus complex ideology and took his disgusting idea of penis envy and publicly (in the middle of the NY Psychoanalytic Institute) challenged his ideas and declared that men have womb envy and thus is a primary reason they keep women in the home. She then was ousted from the space by the outraged followers of Freud, said “screw you” and went on to found and run the American Institute for Psychoanalysis (a one up on the men who had just ousted her). She developed and championed the study of Psychology and Women’s Studies and was the first person to ever present at a conference on the topic. She was an absolute badass.

I haven’t been on tumblr for quite as long as a lot of people but over several years I’ve noticed this interesting gradual sorta,, shift in the general culture? that it went from this mostly depressed, nihilistic outlook where people would regularly joke about hating themselves and being hopeless and depressed, to a wave of vehemence of “STOP hating everything actually the world is Good and you deserve love!!!” type posts, to now, where those aggressive ‘PSAs’ have faded away and instead I regularly see people romanticizing simple things like stars and hot tea and rainy mornings, and waxing poetic about their friends, and just trying to put love out there. and I don’t know exactly what that means (someone who knows more than me could probably say something smart about generational expression and trauma or popular perception of mental health and whatnot), but I do know that it makes my heart very full to see people learn to love the world and themselves by extension, and a whole userbase adopting healthier coping mechanisms, and therefore teaching the younger users to do so as well. I might just be following different people, but I really do think we’ve grown. everyone has grown. five years ago it wasn’t unusual for the next post on my dash to be a scathing commentary on why nothing matters or an anon ripping into someone they barely knew or someone complaining about how pathetic their interests are. now I have mutuals who get excited and spam reblog art of cows and friends I see tagging each other in pictures of frogs and strangers writing paragraphs about how much I matter. it makes me happy. idk. just an observation I wanted to make. I think people are good and everyone’s just trying their best at the end of the day
